hey everyone and welcome back to the channel i hope you're having a good day we're talking about axe chapter three in five minutes and this is kind of a shorter chapter which is a good thing because my camera battery is dying my microphone battery is dying my receiver to the microphone battery is dying so we're gonna have to be quick this is just one of our five-minute studies through every chapter of the book of acts lord willing as we move into the future and those are part of our bigger study of the book of acts
we've got some verse by verse studies coming up and those are going to be released probably in about a week and moving forward to to go through the entire book and talk about it in detail so remember to subscribe and hit that notification bell so you're not going to miss out on any of those so acts chapter 3. if you want this handout by the way there's a link down in the description below acts three when did the events of this chapter take place this is probably not long after the day of pentecost we don't
have any exact dates for the event of acts chapter three but probably still right around the 30 a.d period we only have a couple characters that we're going to mention here peter he's an apostle he was really featured in in acts chapter 2 where he spoke on the day of pentecost he was the brother of the apostle andrew then we have john john is also an apostle he's the brother of james then there's a lame man this this guy was he couldn't walk from the time that he was born and every day he would sit
in the temple asking for alms and then finally we've just got a crowd of jews so these jews they witness this miracle that takes place in the temple and they all gather to hear peter and john and we'll talk about that in a second what about the geography what about the where well this one's easy this happened in the temple which was in the city of jerusalem and we're not traveling anywhere else in this chapter this chapter is pretty simple to break down verses 1 through 10 are a record of a miracle that was performed
and then the rest of the chapter is just kind of the the follow-up or the response to that miracle by the people who witnessed it so chapter 3 verses 1-10 peter and john heal a lame man in the temple peter and john were going to the temple about the hour of prayer there was this man who was there he was asking for charity he was looking for money and peter told him well i don't have any money but i'll give you something better and he healed the man making him able to walk again in the
name of jesus of nazareth and the text says that the man went walking and even leaping into the temple and many of the people who had seen him asking for alms every single day they recognized him so that takes us into the second section here peter preaches to the gathering crowds in verses 11-26 this man who was healed was seems like he was at least an adult and he had been lame since he was born so he'd probably been sitting at the temple you know for a long time a lot of people who had gone
into the temple would have recognized him any citizens of jerusalem probably would have known this guy so when they see him walking and leaping through the temple they're astonished and they start running to peter and john just in amazement peter very quickly told them that the power that they were witnessing here it was it was genuine but it wasn't his it was jesus's power the same jesus who they had rejected and killed not long ago peter said to them that they had killed jesus because of their ignorance that being said god knew this ahead of
time and their actions actually fulfilled the words of the old testament prophets just like he did in the last chapter peter told the people that they needed to repent to have their sins quote blotted out he then quotes some other passages from the jewish scriptures to drive home the point that jesus is the messiah who had been promised for years and years and the jews were supposed to be anticipating he quoted deuteronomy 18 verses 18 and 19 which was originally written by moses it was a prophecy that god would one day send a prophet just
like him and that the people or the jews should listen to that prophet when he arrived and peter said that that prophet is jesus he also said that jesus was the fulfillment of god's promise to abraham way back in genesis chapter 22 verse 18 that through abraham's descendants the whole world would be blessed jesus was really the blessing that all of the jews didn't know they needed but here in acts chapter 3 peter is helping them to make the connections that are essential for them to understand that jesus is the messiah and he is the
fulfillment of god's ancient promises and then finally one application from this chapter before we close and that is that our service to god is for god's glory it's not for ours we see that peter understood this when he almost immediately deflected the attention off of himself he said no no i i didn't do this miracle this is jesus's power working through me and when we receive attention for doing maybe some good work or doing something commendable in our walk to be like christ we need to do the same thing that peter did whatever you do
don't use your religion to steal glory from god because then you're really using it to worship yourself rather than the god who you should be worshipping and you're encouraging other people to worship you and to give you their praise rather than the god who bought you by the blood of jesus and who you now serve we as sinful people who had to be redeemed and bought back by god at extraordinary costs by his grace only we don't have anything to boast about in ourselves the only thing that we have to boast about is the greatness
of the god who saved us
