so when the decisions are made we're um considered the document he's referring to is the 184 yearold Treaty of vangi it was signed in 1840 between the British crown and more than 500 indigenous Mai Chiefs it defined the agreement on how to govern and it still guides legis legislation and policy to this day so why the protest now last week the junior partner in the Government Act New Zealand party unveiled a bill called the treaty principles Bill Mai say the bill is a narrower interpretation of the wangi treaty in law the controversial legislation is seen
by many Maori and their supporters as undermining the rights of the country's indigenous people maues make up around 20 % of the 5.3 million population they are over represented in many measures of social and financial disadvantage after its first reading last week Parliament was suspended for a while after Mai legislature Hanah roiti might be clock tore up the bill and started a Haka protest inside the house um I think it's important that we keep um our Copa which is our values is holding and our culture and it's a real B thing for us to have
cultural identity but I know that theill of this bill is going to be like ruin everything and probably like like they separate us into two instead of into one and I believe that we're fighting for the right reason act New Zealand party's Coalition Partners the national party and New Zealand first agreed to support the bill through its first reading but they have said they will not support it to become law for more such videos subscribe to our YouTube channel hit the like button and follow for more news updates [Music]
