now I'm going to talk about a feeling and I know that you know this feeling it's a feeling of feeling drained of just something being off and there's sort of Despair to it because we can't see a cause why are we feeling like this where is this coming from what can I change to make it go away because if I can't know what it is I can't change it if I can't change it I'm stuck with it and that's exactly that feeling it's being stuck with something that you can't really Define that you don't know
the source of that you don't know the cause of and that you don't know the remedy of and if you would ask ancient philosophers guys the sort of guys that we like Plato epicus Marcus Aurelius and of course some others they would say and epicus has said this is a quote that true education consists in learning to want for things to come about exactly as they do now let me say that again true education lies in wanting for things to come about exactly as they do right and this is for many of us this is
a big shift because we always try to affect change in our environment we try to make everything better we we think we're responsible for everything and we have control over everything but what we're really doing is standing up to something challenging something attacking something that by its nature is much much bigger than us much much stronger impossibly stronger than us something that would would never possibly be able to challenge or affect any kind of change and there's nothing wrong with that we we are not Gods we're we're living beings and we can't change most things
around us and this is very important this does not mean you can't do anything this does not mean give up but when we challenge things that are by Nature vastly stronger than us we are doomed to fail and because we get up each day and do this we have this almost mysterious feeling in the back of our heads in the back of our hearts that that make us feel exactly like the feeling we talked about this is in physical terms this is exactly the same thing as as being on a beach being in the shore
being in the water maybe even and a wave of Epic Proportions a tsunami wave or something even smaller than that is approaching us and what can we possibly do to stop it what can we possibly do to withstand it there we instinctive instinctively know that we need to get away that we need to yield to it that we need to get out of its way and that we can't expect to just stand there and meet it and survive that meeting there's no no way then we know we can't do it but when we say I
have a wife I have a children I have a job I have a house I have friends none of them shall die then we're being fools and we might not say this out loud but we do expect that we do expect it in the way that we never prepare for it we do expect somehow Never Dying anyone that we love Never Dying by never thinking about it by avoiding the thought by avoiding preparations by just never thinking about it really because this is very clear because when it when something like that does happen and and
some someone that's close to us or something that we really fancy breaks it gets stolen it gets ruined it gets it's gone we lose it I mean we just can't imagine can't believe that something like this has really happened to us that's not supposed to happen that's not allowed to happen and that's exactly where we go wrong where we try to stand up to a wave as tall as a building here again we need to yield to these things we need to understand what they are we need to understand that they're a part of everything
a part of life a part of this world a part of this universe part of everyone's lives and that we need to yield to them that we need to go with them and not against them and that's exactly what epicus meant when he said that true education consists in wanting for things to come about EX exactly as they do meaning let's say your dog gets sick if you've never ever considered this possibility before and never ever considered how to act in this inevitable occasion then you'll be shocked you will shake you'll you'll get anxiety you
you'll be completely confused and and um scared and that will be your life and really up to that you will be conf completely confused and scared as well because when we do have things we're afraid of losing them and when we do lose them which is in inevitable we are completely unprepared and devastated and so this is exactly what philosophy is what what our true education is we must know what these inevitable things are we must know their nature and we must be able to yield to them in order to not maximize their impact that's
essentially what we're doing everyone is Mortal including yourself so what does that mean their death of everyone around us um the eventual breakdown and disappearance of every single object around us is inevitable accepting this inevitability knowing this inevitability and preparing for this inevitability should be our biggest concern because nothing else is as certain as these things these these things that by Nature are stronger than us and just Rec call to your mind how really conceited and selfish it is when something that is dear to you disappears goes away forever and you think it's the worst
thing in the world yet when it when the same exact thing happens to someone else how many people have died around you how many people whom you didn't really know or didn't really care about have died knowing that obviously they mean something to someone else and said well death happens people die um this person was 95 of course it was going to happen sooner or later this is no surprise this is nothing strange this is nothing wrong this is how it goes as life goes on that's just how it is yeah when it happens to
you because of the lack of preparation it's the worst thing ever so this is what we have to train ourselves in then we have to stop ignoring these in inevitabilities these truths that are all around us these facts that we in the back of our heads of course know that they're at least possibilities but we don't do anything to prepare for them we distract ourselves all day long and we all do this of course but it takes work it takes diligence it takes effort to not let these things slide to think about them to consider
them to prepare for them and to understand their true nature make effort make an effort to not ignore these things from now on to think about them every now and then as much as you can bear and to in that way already prepare for them and this is what philosophy will do for you this is what philosophy will help you in and this is one of the ways it calls to you
