have you ever wondered what life would look like if your dreams were actually achieved I've spent 2 years asking over a thousand people questions about life trying to learn about what differentiates those who are happy and fulfilled from those who grow old with regrets and one of the questions that has really pushed my research slimness is this one what is a goal that you set for yourself when you were younger that you never achieved I've asked this question to hundreds of people and 95% of them have a very very clear answer about a goal that
they wish they would have achieved but only about 5% claim to achieve all of their goals and over that time I realized that the strategy the 5% use is exactly the same so today I want to break down how you can change your life this year by using this secret method I've uncovered through the 5% of my thousand plus interviews that I guarantee will blow your mind so let's start with the interview that really launched this all with a French couple who now live and work in Singapore as soon as we started working we had
that plan in mind to just retire as fast as we could actually in 2019 we went through VI this exercise what would be our n life our ideal life if we had no boundaries and we defined it and realized that in order to achieve or to live that near life this is the budget that we needed on a yearly basis so how do you then leave from passive income aligning to that budget you push it to like like a little bit to the extreme but you know when you put budgets of when you buy a
camera in your professional life why don't you do the same in your personal life this was the first time that I'd ever truly thought about getting extremely specific not just about the money that you want to make the amount but also the life that you want to live now one thing that I have learned over my years of interviewing all of these strangers is that most of the ones that have a lot of regrets have absolutely no idea what they want well they might know what they want to do in life what they want to
do more of they might know what they want to experience but there's no detailed explicit version of what those things actually are a lot of people my age feel very lost in life they feel like it's very hard to navigate their life to figure out what they want to do what would be your advice to those people how do they figure their life out or piece it together well I'm samon and I'm uh I feel very much like you do I never really had any um major um goal regret that not having a a specific
Big Goal well at times I I I I felt I I should have had some goals you know that were more explicit because then you can you know put your efforts at achieving it um and and I sort of think like well maybe if I if I had had them I might have actually achieved them um here's the truth most unfulfilled people pick their careers and then try to build a life around that but most fulfilled people create their ideal lifestyle and then they pick a career that fits into that Vision if you want to
change your life this year and you want to do it using a method that is proven to work the very first step that you need to take is to craft your ideal lifestyle so there are three fundamental questions that you need to answer who am I what do I want and how do I get what I want now one exercise that has been proven to instantly help find the answers to this takes literally 5 minutes to do and the exercise is called current me versus future me so let me show you how it works first
you would split one piece of paper into two halves label the upper end current me label the lower end future me and then turn on some introspective music like what you're listening to right now put your phone away and in a paragraph write in as much details possible in the top box the current me box a descript about who you currently are so in here you would talk about your career your relationships your health your Ambitions your goals that you have not achieved regrets mistakes Etc and then in the lower box write an extremely detailed
Vision talking about the same things except this time you're talking about future you so the information you write in both of the boxes should be so detailed that you could give it to a total stranger they could read it and feel like they know exactly who you are and then when you actually look at the two versions side by side you realize they're not the same and so you ask yourself what do I need to do in order to bridge the gap so in other words what do I need to do to turn current me
into future me this exercise takes 5 or 10 minutes but after the 5 or 10 minutes it will give you so much mind-blowing clarity about what your ideal lifestyle really looks like which is like as I said earlier something that 95% of people never do so then once you know who you are and you know what you want what do you do next so the whole idea is it starts off with a goal or a vision then a commitment and then the discipline to do the thing that's required to achieve that thing um but if
you reduce what you need to do to the ridiculously small to start you then build self trust you build a little confidence you a little bit of certainty and you get a little momentum but a lot of times say I want to make a million dollars I said well have you made hundred grand yet uh no have you made 10 grand in a month yet no want to we start with that step number two to changing your life this year is to turn your ideal lifestyle into a set of achievable measurable and detailed goals now
I've gotten a lot of comments from people online about goals or BS and I don't set goals so here's my retaliation on why you guys are actually all goal Setters so first and foremost there's nobody nobody that hasn't achieved some goals when you were a baby you had a goal of walking so you did that you know when you were in school you um wanted to communicate so you learned the alphabet and you learned language you know when you were a baby you learned how to eat with a fork and a knife and Spoon you
learned how to get dressed so you have achieved goals already going back to the Singapore French couples interview they said that you have to get extremely specific and then you work backwards from there so the goal setting method that the 5% of interviewees I speak to those people who have figured life out is a method that I have developed which I call backtrack so the first thing you do is you make a goal specific and detailed and measurable for example a bad goal for the new year is I want to get in better shape but
a good goal would be I want to lose 10 lb in 3 months the specificity makes it easy for you to understand what achievement will act actually look like now most schools for my interviews people tell me they fail because people don't know what the achievement actually looks and feels like what does it mean to be in good shape there's a million ways that your body can look but it's your job to make it make sense and so once you get super specific on your goal then you break it down so you start by taking
your big dream let's say in the current me verse future me exercise you want to have a big goal of losing 10 lbs in 3 months you would take that goal and you would break it down into bite-sized chunks so if it's a six-month goal you break it down to a quarterly goal to a monthly goal and to a today goal by asking yourself one question multiple times what do I need to do in this period in order to achieve my future goal eventually this leaves you once again with what the couple in Singapore hinted
at it gives you a step-by-step blueprint which helps you avoid any potential dangers of getting off track cuz now you know how to build it also gives you a starting point which again I think is something that blocks all of us so getting started is 95% of the hardest part when it comes to changing your life so at this point now you know what ideal lifestyle you want to work towards and you know what goals you want to achieve and you know how to get started and it's detailed so what would the last step be
the last step would be turning your goals into your reality you know many years ago my first Mentor you know asked me what I wanted to achieve in my life I said I want a mercedesbenz and I want a four-bedroom house and I want Italian clothes I want you know Mercedes I want it I want I want I want all these things and he just said to me so are you interested in achieving these things or are you committed to achieving these things and he says to me he says uh if you're interested you do
what's easy and convenient if you're interested you'll allow your present circumstances and your present habits to control what you do but say when you're committed you will do whatever it takes to upgrade your knowledge and your skills and your habits and your disciplines now we created a goal setting Journal that's using the method that's explaining in this video and the top advice from the 5% of the interviewees who have figured life out so what I did for the goal tracking the final step in this method is I essentially made 6 months of goal tracking inside
this journal because lacking consistency self accountability and discipline is a big reason why people get to the end of the year and they're sad because they didn't achieve any of their goals so if you want to make serious change this year you have to be willing to measure your progress when I set a goal to lose 10 lb in 3 months but I don't TR rack the weight on the scale every single day I don't write it down in my journal and instead all I do is look in the mirror and I'm like okay I
look better okay I look worse I'm setting myself up to fail the truth is everywhere you go there you are you will not be able to see how well you have done unless you write everything down so what I have learned that the most effective way to track your goals according to the interviews I've spoken to is actually to do it by the quarter the month the week and even track them by the day and it's not just track backing them but it's also having a period of reflection every week every month every quarter where
you stop to realize like okay hey I did this well I achieve this I want to do this better next week or oh shoot I missed this or I should improve that because over time the back and forth analysis and reflection with yourself it turns you into a more consistent and confident machine how do we do what we love you know especially young people they're very anxious and do it do it go for it go for it well and then you do it well do it well and choose you know be flexible hey the other
thing is you have to adapt nothing's going to be a straight line in life the world around you changes and you have to change if you don't if you're not an adaptable person you're never going to be happy even if you have a good job the truth is this could be the year that you finally achieve all of your goals but to do that you have to understand what lifestyle you want to create what specific detailed goals are going to get you there and you need to build an accountability achievable tracker to help help you
get there you can do all of that inside our goal setting Journal which contains the three-step process I explained in this video based on life advice from over a th000 interviews with older people and you can check it out with a link in our description below but regardless remember that if you do not create your own ideal Vision someone else will assign it to you and if you're unsatisfied with your current life you still have time to take control back you just need to start by understanding what the heck it is that would make you
happier
