On April 10th 1912 crowds gathered at Southampton Beach to wave off what was at the time the world's largest and most prestigious ship the RMS Titanic the cost of the most expensive first class parlor ticket was 4,350 bucks that's around $70,000 in today's money but barely 5 days after steaming away the ship was swallowed by the Atlantic Ocean so let's rewind and go back to what actually happened on That faithful night the captain wanted to set a speed record for the ship's maiden voyage and arrive early the ship was deemed Unsinkable so he went Full
Throttle into the dark Arctic Waters after spotting the 100t iceberg the crew desperately tried to steer The Vessel away and avoid the Collision but the Titanic was traveling too fast and the iceberg tore down the side of the ship creating a huge opening in the hall it wasn't a continuous rip and damage was C In several places in total the damage spanned along an area of around 300 ft but the ship's designers had prepared for the prospect of a collision and added watertight compartments down each side of the ship to act as a buffer zone
four of these compartments could be breached and the ship would still stay afloat but because the iceberg tore down the side of the Titanic it ripped holes in six compartments the compartments didn't extend up the total height of all Decks and weren't actually sealed at the the Top This Is Why when more than four were flooded water reached over the top of the bulkheads and filled the remaining compartments causing the ship to sink into the ocean think of it as water spilling over an ice cube tray but what if the Collision was headon would it
still have sunk ships are designed with potential crashes in mind and most vessels have Collision bulkheads in the bow most of All it's like your cars bumper or crumple Zone it's a safe feature that can withstand a direct hit the bow could have taken some of the impact and some experts have suggested that if it hit headon only two to four of the watertight compartments would have been flooded So in theory the Titanic might not have sunk and it might have even been able to continue sailing to its final destination at a much slower speed
the force of impact would likely have Been huge though but although passengers would have been injured by the force they'd have been able to stay on the ship to wait to be rescued by other ships rather than being forced into the icy waters of the Atlantic still one of the Titanics designers Edward wiing suggested that the force of the impact might not have actually been that big he told the British inquiry that lots of people scarcely felt the collision and he believed the ship would not have sunk If it did hit the iceberg head on
the ship was also designed with remotely operated watertight doors between all compartments so any floods could have been quickly sorted out because Titanic had six breaches from the Side Collision and because it happened so quickly sealing the doors wouldn't have made a difference as it was essentially impossible to save it by that point the ship immediately began to flood with water pouring in at a rate of roughly 7 Tons per second 15 times faster than it could be pumped out so while it sounds like the Titanic would have survived had the ship hit the iceberg
head on this idea does come with some issues first off the Collision bulkheads were designed to survive a crash with another ship not a giant Iceberg if two ships collided both would absorb some of the impact in their bulkheads sharing the impact and likely staying afloat but an iceberg is stationary meaning that Titanic would absorb most of the energy from the Collision if Titanic hit head first because of the speed it was traveling the impact would have likely travel down the whole body of the ship just imagine a 46,000 ton ship traveling at around 20
knots at some point it hits an iceberg that weighs what could be over 100,000 tons this Collision would likely create a powerful force causing massive damage to the vessel it is likely that seams would split staircases Would come tumbling down and rivets would burst open across the ship all that would have potentially flooded even more compartments this could have cause Titanic to sink in a matter of minutes rather than hours but that's just the tip of the iceberg as we all know the biggest part of it is hidden underwater so if Titanic had been traveling
headon it's likely it would have hit the part of the iceberg below the water first which would send it veering off course Hitting an iceberg is not like hitting a brick wall in this case the ice under the water would have torn open the bottom of the ship and caused damage to the sides icebergs also aren't flat solid objects if a flat Collision happened the ship might have stayed aoat but icebergs come in many shapes and sizes from domes to wedges Studies have also been done on the steel used to produce Titanic and the test
show the metal was about 10 times more brittle Than the steel we use today the ship was built before we understood the effects of low temperature on steel the old steel used to make the vessel would not Bend when faced with freezing temperatures but break recovered pieces of Titanic's Hull plates show that the hull just shattered on impact hitting headon would also cause a very severe and abrupt stop so even if the ship hadn't sunk there would still have been major issues think about when you Suddenly hit the brakes on your car or when the
bus stops while you're walking down the aisle and you get flung forward passengers would have been thrown across the ship and because the crash happened at night most people were sleeping so it wouldn't be be able to effectively prepare for any sort of impact this would result in injuries for most people on board it would be especially bad for those at the front of the ship where the accommodation for the off-duty Firefighters greasers and Engineers was but while passengers and off-duty crew may have been thrown out of bed there would be a lot more survivors
than in the original scenario many ships have had head-on collisions and made it back to shore not many people know that Titanic actually had two sister ships the White Star Line the company that built Titanic also built vessels called Brittanic and Olympic captained by Edward J Smith who had later Helm Titanic the Olympic set off on its maiden voyage in June 191 but much like Fort sister ship disaster was just around the corner on its fifth commercial Voyage Olympic collided with a royal Navy ship HMS Hawk while the Olympic received damage to its side Hawk
crashed into the other vessel head on the bow of the hawk was completely crushed by the Collision but because the ship had watertight compartments it managed to survive the impact and later Returned to shore for repair another study case is the SS Andre Ador which was an Italian ocean liner that made Global headlines in 1956 like the Titanic the andread DOR was heading for New York City on its 101st Voyage when disaster struck on July 25th The Vessel collided with the 524 ft Swedish passenger liner Stockholm the Stockholm hit the ship head on but the
point of impact for the Andre Ador was on its side the front of the Stockholm was completely smashed but because the impact was on its Hall it managed to survive the Andre Ador however sadly sank due to the Collision being on the side of the ship so these cases could suggest that maybe the Titanic would have survived had it hit the iceberg head on but we have to remember that the Titanic hit the thing full speed whereas both the Olympic and the andread dorya were traveling slower it was September 12th 1990 in Those times way
before instant messaging and zoom calls a little girl was looking for pen pals Zoe was aboard a ship from England to Belgium on vacation with her parents she was only 10 years old at the time but was a very clever school girl she took a piece of paper and started putting some words together she introduced herself then wrote about how she liked ballet and playing the flute and the piano of course she couldn't help but mention her two adored pets a Little hamster she called Sparkle and her fish speckle she also put down the address
at which she could be reached in case someone was interested in writing back to her but alas she was at Sea who could she send this message to an interesting idea came to her mind she carefully placed her letter in a plastic bottle tightly closed the lid to protect it from the water and threw it into the sea the little girl's excitement faded away over the ears as she didn't receive A response maybe the bottle got stuck somewhere maybe it was swallowed by some big scary sea creature or maybe the water actually poked through the
plastic cap and destroyed her message many years later on Christmas a letter for Zoe was received at her parents house under her maiden name the postage signaled that the message was from Europe it was from a Dutch couple Pete and Jacqueline letau who had found her delicate bottle and were very considerate to write back they Pointed out that they had found the letter among the debris thrown at the shore by the Sea Zoe's letter had been stranded for a staggering 23 years at Sea and travel for more than 350 Mi to reach its final destination
near roddam in the Netherlands that's quite a voyage for a small plastic bottle a story similar to that of Zoe is the strange connection between two little boys a little German boy named Frank usbeck was on a boat traveling to Denmark when he Got the same idea as Zoe he was 5 years old at the time he put together a message and threw it into the unknown the year was 1987 he got his response years later when he was 29 his letter just like the one Zoe would send a couple of years later later had
been at sea for 24 years his message was found by a boy named Danielle karak while he was on a walk with his parents on the coronian spit near the Baltic Sea Danielle was lucky That his father knew enough German to translate the message the unlikely friends eventually met via video call in 2011 not all Message in a Bottle stories have been explained away in 2013 a Croatian Surfer came across a damaged bottle while near the ad rea SE the message it contained dated back to 1985 and it was from a man named Jonathan the
Senter was eager for his letter to reach a woman named Mary and he also expressed his keenness for her to respond since The letter was supposedly sent from Nova Scotia the bottle had to have traveled a mindboggling 3700 miles the message went from the Atlantic Ocean entered the Mediterranean Sea and reached the Adriatic Shores in Croatia the identity of neither John nor Mary were ever discovered there are also messages in a bottle with wonderful love stories to share this was the case for a and Paulina wiking when a a lonely Swedish sailor placed a letter
in a bottle and Threw it in the Mediterranean Sea he had no idea the piece of paper would eventually reach his future wife this was in the early 1950s the bottle was found by an Italian man who was inspired enough to give it to his niece Paulina after a year of back and forth letters being exchanged Aki and Paulina eventually met and got married having decided to share their story with the world they became somewhat of a celebrity couple for the Time they even shared video footage of their wedding with the world and their story
was featured in a bunch of newspapers this fortunate event started a movement between young people looking for love increasing the number of messages being thrown out at Sea in search of a fairy tale ending not all the stories that started out like this eventually worked out though in 1945 an American named Frank hostac placed a similar message to that of AIS in a Bottle and threw it in the waters almost a year later his letter was found by an Irish woman her name was Brenda uliva their years of Correspondence soon caught the attention of the
media at the time but their Friendship Never flourished because of the added pressure they eventually met in person when Frank traveled to Ireland but he didn't stay for long and they eventually got out of touch with each other after Titanic met its strange ending many bottles Containing secret messages started to surface almost all of them proved to be counterfeited apart from one letter years after Titanic had sunk in the icy Atlantic Waters a bottle was found on the Irish Shores it was supposedly from a man named Jeremiah Burke and to this day today it is
considered to be the only genuine Message in a Bottle originating from Titanic the piece of paper simply stated the sender's name and the location the Titanic accompanied By the word goodbye since the date has washed away it's difficult to estimate whether the note was sent before or after the ship had hit the iceberg the common understanding is however that since Jeremiah was looking to relocate to the US he was merely sending his last symbolic regards to his family and friends back in Ireland this simple way of meeting and sometimes corresponding with people has turned into
a hobby for a man from a Canadian province named Prince Edward Island located east of the US state of Maine this man Harold Hackett claims to have sent over 4,000 bottles into the Atlantic Ocean since 1996 he also claims to have received many responses from all over the world including letters from people in Europe like France and Germany but also from the Bahamas or even Africa this unlikely Pastime earns him about 150 Christmas cards from his pen pals each year to this day he refuses to add his phone Number to any of his letters this
way he ensures that if people ever want to contact him the only means of doing so is via a Written Letter he's also studied the best times to send the messages in the water based on the direction of the Winds and the currents now some bottles spent a whole lifetime at Sea after being Cast Away by their sender it was the case for a British man that wrote a message and placed it into a bottle before throwing it in the English Channel in 1914 his name was Thomas Hughes and he wanted to direct the message
to his wife but was polite enough to write a letter to whoever got their hands on the bottle first asking them to redirect the piece of paper accordingly the bottle didn't reach his wife since it was found 85 years later on the Essex Coast the man that stumbled upon the bottle was kind enough to reach out to the family and place the message in possession of Thomas's daughter and 85 years isn't the longest time for a small bottle to be cruising the waves a scientist named Hunter Brown was studying currents in the North Sea when
this idea came to his mind he placed the same message in almost 2,000 bottles and requested the unlikely recipient that they write back with the location of their Discovery he thought this method would help him better understand the layout of the North Sea currents a bottle was found About 11 M from its original departing location after 97 years to this day more than 300 of the original bottles relating to Hunter Brown's project eventually made it to the shore not all of the messages that were found in bottles got replied to Via physical letters Oliver vavala
through a bottle containing a letter on the English Coast while he was on vacation with his family he was 14 at the time 33 years later a woman reached out on Facebook claiming She had gotten his message and tracked him down through his social media profile at first he hardly remembered having placed the letter in the bottle but he eventually recounted the events even the fact that he sealed the bottle with candle wax to make sure it was leak proof and then there's Christina agiler and her bottle no wait hers is about a Genie in
a Bottle okay never mind at 11:40 p.m. the Titanic made contact with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean many artifacts were found and restored like parts of the ship jewelry and dining plates to name a few it took approximately 3 hours for the ship to be completely submerged in the remote icy water the night was cold and very much alive the orchestra was playing music as they Enchanted the guests on board everyone was excited to arrive in America it was still considered an amazing feat for a ship to cross the Atlantic back in 1912
but as the day went ahead there was an atmosphere of impending doom for the captain and his crew no one else felt it though it seemed to them nothing could possibly go wrong and this would just be another regular night to them the Titanic was Unsinkable [Music] the last thing on your mind when thinking about the Titanic is the mail crew yes there were mail men on board delivering mail to America it may seem Like a pretty mundane occupation but there was a very tough test to pass in order to be accepted on board and
only a few top candidates would qualify and those few would get shortlisted and accepted John star March an American was one of these mail men earning between 1,000 to $1,500 a year working on the Titanic back in 1912 this was considered to be a lot of money they were not officially part of the ship's crew since the male crew was placed near the third Class quarters but given their influence and resistance they were eventually moved and given a private dining area March got this job since he needed the money to support his family he found
a perfect way to earn some big bucks working on a large ship traveling across the the ocean he was 51 at the time and came from New Jersey sadly he was on board when the ship sank and didn't make it but they recovered a pocket watch that gives us a Little insight into what happened that fateful evening it's a gold case engraved with filigree and had a caption saying it was made by the Elgen National watch company on the surface you think this would just make a pretty cool antique sitting over the fireplace but there
are some unusual details about it there are obvious signs water seeped beneath the glass and the black arms of the watch indicate the time to be exactly 1:27 it leaves us wondering why the clock stopped at this precise hour what was the owner doing the mail clerks were operating a fully functioning and efficient mail sorting facility on board the Titanic this wasn't something you'd come by often on a cruise ship since typical ocean liners used closed mailbags to transport the mail from one port to another but the mail sorting facility on the Titanic allowed passengers
to send out postcards Whenever the ship docked in transit zones in Ireland and France according to reports people started heading back to their rooms at around 11:00 p.m. but some of them were still hanging around and enjoying their night the five maale men were celebrating a colleague's birthday in their separate Dining Room 5 minutes before imp act crew members spotted the iceberg and rang the bell three times as a warning that something was ahead of the ship they gave orders For the Titanic to move left or as they say In The Biz hard a starboard
to make the engines reverse it was not enough to avoid the great impact at 11:40 p.m. the Titanic struck the iceberg and disaster erupted on the inside not just water seeping in and ultimately sinking the ship but but panic and Chaos among the passengers and crew members Captain Smith reached the deck and was informed that the Titanic had hit an iceberg and at the same time the mail room began Filling with water we know that the 880t ship was completely submerged at around 2:20 a.m. with 706 survivors the time between the impact and the sinking
was really eventful at midnight they started getting the lifeboats ready for the passengers to evacuate orders were given for women and children to board the safety boats with some crewmen to guide and operate them the problem was that the 20 safety boats available could only host 1,178 people out of the total of more than 2,200 passengers on board March and his colleagues began sorting out the mail there was chaos in directing and ordering around with each second passing icy cold water was filling the ship 15 minutes after night Captain Smith ordered his crew members to
send out a distress signal even though SOS was established earlier than the Titanic many others used cqd the CQ stands for General call and The D is distress the Frankfurt was too far away to help even though it was one of the first to respond even the Titanic's sister ship the Olympic responded but it also was too far away at 12:20 a.m. the Carpathia received the Urgent Message and redirected from its original course to help them out even though they were 58 nautical miles away although this was some relieving news the water kept seeping in
at an alarming rate it wasn't easy to keep everyone Calm knowing that the ship could be underwater in a matter of hours at this point many passengers were already on board the safety boats waiting to descend into the water the musicians on board began playing music for the ones still waiting at first they were playing in the first class lounge and then they moved to the deck there's a debate on how long they were playing for and what song it was none of the musicians made it out the five mailmen on board were Also doing
their duties while the ship was sinking according to a ship officer the mail room was already covered in water above the ankles and the mail men were busy trying to save as much mail as they could March was one of them they were bagss of mail floating around they started with the registered mail Witnesses of the Titanic sinking reported the mailmen were putting bags of mail on the deck to keep them from getting wet until help arrived they also Mentioned bags of mail were floating about in the freezing water it wasn't until 12:45 a.m. when
Lifeboat number 7 on the left side of the ship was lowered onto the water even though it had room for roughly 65 5 people only 27 people were inside many of the safety boats carried fewer passengers than their maximum capacity allowed the crew were worried that the boats would capsize if so many people were on them some reports suggest that some people even refused to Board the safety ships sticking with the claim that the Titanic was Unsinkable at the same time they fired up one of the eight distress rockets in the air but it didn't
get them any help at 12:55 a.m. the second and third safety Boats were descended to the waters with two male passengers jumping on board 5 minutes later another safety boat was lowered with around 39 people at this point water entered the base of the grand staircase in the next 20 minutes more Safety Boats were lowered most of them underloaded still no help the Carpathia was still on the way Panic was growing and tensions were Rising there was a lot of anger for people being left behind at around 1:30 a.m. things were getting out of control
the organized boarding of passengers to the safety boats stopped March's watch stopped 3 minutes earlier which could mean he was part of the scuffle between crew members and passengers it took 3 hours for the Carpathia to arrive March wasn't among the survivors his watch proved to be one of the essential findings lost in the wreckage of the Titanic it was eventually returned to March's two daughters and now it's in one of the collections of the national postal Museum March was a man who did what he had to do in the worst circumstances time was a
precious commodity for the people on board the ship and this watch Proved valuable to learn more about the tragic yet inspiring stories of the [Music] Titanic it was 11:39 at night when the Titanic Lookout shouted Iceberg right ahead Swift action on the bridge to reduce speed and change the ship's course didn't help and you already know how the story ends since then we've regarded what happened to Titanic as a once- in a-lifetime event is it though the Titanic sank in 1912 forget about Fancy GPS's or weather satellites at the time ships were responsible for warning
each other about the location of icebergs like hey man trust me on this situation then the Titanic disaster happened to call it a disaster is an understatement so Specialists felt the need to form an organization to avoid this kind of accident happening again that's why a year later they created the International Ice Patrol or iip for short up to this day this group has been Responsible for giving ships Advanced warnings about ice threats iip improved their methods over the years from ship reports and aircraft patrols to satellite images recently they've also been using oceanographic boys
floating devices providing real-time information about ocean conditions up to 164 ft below the surface to predict the potential drift of icebergs luckily iip is doing an excellent job in reducing ship Iceberg collisions but don't get Too comfortable because even the most advanced detection equipment can't entirely avoid an unfortunate situation between 1980 and 2005 there were 57 incidents involving vessels and icebergs and the chilling truth is that today's ships are more likely to run into an iceberg than the Titanic was Studies have shown that 1,38 icebergs crossed the area where the Titanic sank back in 1912
you might think that's a lot but scientists say It's not really a big deal I mean yeah it's on the higher side but there have been 14 years with even more Iceberg activity since then nowadays the number of icebergs is going up due to the accelerated melting of Greenland's glaciers and since more ships are heading into Polar Waters the chances of ships bumping into icebergs are higher but the real danger for captains is invisible enemies called Growlers and Bergie bits Growers are these small icebergs that can be the size of a regular door and Bergie
bits are also considered small measuring around the size of a school bus these icebergs might seem harmless but they are actually tricky since they can be completely invisible to Radars or satellites let's see what happens when a modered cruise ship as big as the Titanic hits one of these small icebergs meet the Norwegian Sun a luxurious cruise ship like Titanic as it has the Capacity to accommodate 2,400 passengers and more than 900 crew members on July 2022 this creu ship was on its way to hubard Glacier in Alaska when it found itself in the middle
of a dense fog suddenly passengers felt an impact and were terrified as the ship experienced a severe jeel the fog immediately cleared and they realized what had happened the Norwegian Sun had collided with an iceberg of The Growler type but the outcome was entirely different from Titanic thankfully there were no injuries and both the passengers and staff reached the Alaskan dock safely expert divers checked the condition of the boat and they discovered that the ship had suffered some damage after the Collision so the rest of the trip was cancelled now don't stress about packing for
your next trip across the Atlantic because accidents like the one with the Norwegian Sun are really rare I mean it's common for ships to encounter I but What's unusual is for it to be a problem most modern cruise ships wouldn't get physically damaged by an iceberg and there's a reason for that you see the steel used in the Titanic also played a significant role in the disaster the unsinkable ship after all was not so impact resistant back then the Titanic's Hull was constructed using around 2,000 steel plates which are believed to have been produced in
an open heart furnace as a result the steel contained a high Concentration of phosphorus oxygen and sulfur high levels of these elements make steel brittle at low temperatures causing it to fail upon impact while the steel used on the Titanic was of the highest quality available at the time it wouldn't meet the safety standards of modern ships and it was approximately 10 times less safe than what today's vessels use but the most significant difference between the design of the Titanic and a Modern ship lies in how the hull is put together you see the Titanic
was built using over 3 million rivets for its Hull and upper deck structure so when it struck the iceberg the rivet started a chain reaction causing the entire section of the hull to collapse simultaneously causing an uncontrollable flood of water in contrast modern ships use a method called submerged arc welding which fuses the edges of metal pieces together creating a strong and Continuous bond this is safer because if any part of the ship gets damaged the tear doesn't spread making things worse the damage remains contained within that section okay so small icebergs are becoming more
common and vessels have been adapted to deal with them but there's still one more scenario to consider what if a huge cruise ship hit an iceberg the size of a five-story building imagine we've just created the world's largest cruise ship on the Planet um let's call it the bright Seaside our floating Resort is massive four times the size of the Statue of Liberty it's longer than the Titanic by 318 ft and Carries about three times more passengers and crew and just like the Titanic our fictional ship can cruise at a top speed of around 23
knots now picture this scenario the bright Seaside is cruising at full speed in freezing Waters it's the middle of the night and the captain doesn't realize That all the iceberg detecting equipment on board isn't functioning it's stopped working 3 days ago it's very foggy out there and the lookout also fails to spot a 45 ft tall Iceberg if that whole situation played out and the ship smacked into the iceberg head on well it could potentially lead to a sinking but you can see how unlikely that is right that's why experts are quite confident in saying
that ice isn't likely to sink modern cruise ships it's also worth Mentioning that safety measures have improved a lot since Titanic a modern large vessel can take days to sink which provides enough time to keep everyone safe crews are definitely better prepared to handle evacuation procedures then passengers should also go through safety training before cruising I know I know it is annoying to do that when all you want to do is drink a lemonade or some other beverage by the pool but you know all these safety tips are what Saved the MS Explorer from becoming
a modern Titanic you see back in 2007 all 154 people on board this Antarctic cruise ship managed to get into lifeboats after the ship hit an iceberg now imagine their Panic as they waited for help for 4 hours the crew did an excellent job in keeping everybody safe No Doubt but a report that came out 2 years later said that the MS Explorer accident had happened because of the inexperience of The captain who had pushed the ship too fast into a wall of ice in the freezing Waters of Antarctica that means that no matter how
much Tech a ship's got or how fancy its materials are if you got a careless captain and a crew that doesn't know how to handle an iceberg hit yep a disaster similar to Titanic could happen again but hey you shouldn't stress over it trust the professional and keep in mind the odds in the last 30 years the MS explorer was the only cruise ship That sank thanks to an iceberg and everyone survived so kick back and enjoy your sea vacation in the Titanic movie you won't see any fumes above the fourth funnel of the legendary
ocean liner and it's not a mistake back in 1911 the year before the dream ship's departure large ships would mostly sail with for chimneys they needed those to draw heat and fumes from their massive boilers the Titanic was a real engineering gym that only needed Three chimneys to function so the fourth was added for balance and more impressive looks the White Star Line thought the public would have been disappointed to see only three pipes on the greatest ship of all time the Titanic sister ships the Olympic and the Britannic also had one fake funnel each
for the same reason the dummy chimney wasn't completely useless and ser for ventilation it took out the fumes from the machine spaces in the lower decks And from one of the first class General rooms one big ventilation funnel instead of several small ones helped to declutter the upper decks and left more open space for passengers to enjoy their strolls when Titanic went down the funnels each weighing 60 tons went down with the rest of the ship they were made extra tall to make sure the passengers weren't covered in the suit being ejected their hiding weight
weight let them stay in the upright position the Forward funnel followed by the others fell only when the ship went for the final dive those chimneys were much lighter than the bow so they spread among other debris the light material they were made of flattened once it hit the bottom and the iron eating bacteria living deep down took care of it later the bow of Titanic remained intact when it hit the seab B but the stern was completely mangled when the famous ocean liner hit that iceberg things got really Messy it took the Future movie
star a whole 2 hours and 40 minutes to submerge completely the Collision let water flood six out of 16 watertight compartments as the water gushed into the starboard side the ship started to tilt down in the front and a bit to the right by midnight the damaged compartments were spilling water into others and it was chaos because these compartments were only water tied horizontally soon enough water started flooding through the Anchor chain holes and by 2 a.m. the bow was sinking and the Stern's propellers were lifted out of the water the ship kept flooding until
the moment the bow went underwater and the stern shot up almost 45° the weight of those massive propellers stressed the ship's midsection the steel just couldn't handle it and failed survivors described that moment as some loud noise like breaking China or falling gear that was The Titanic's upper structure giving in by 12 2 a.m. the bow and Stern were only connected by the inner bottom structure minutes later the bow weighing almost 16,000 tons broke loose from the stern the stern Rose sharply to an almost vertical position and started sinking Slowly by 220 it disappeared underwater
the bow was cruising down at about 13 mph and had hit the ocean floor almost a half an hour before the stern the two parts of the Titanic now lie 2,000 feet apart pointing in different directions the bow remained mostly intact just covered in mud the stern turned into a tangled wreck because of the implosions it went through during The Descent the air trapped within the structure just couldn't handle the increasing pressure of the water deep down signal Rockets played a big part in the Titanic's tragedy when a ship goes down you're supposed to shoot
up red flares to Signal trouble but someone Decided to stock Titanic with white lights instead of the usual red once so when the ship smacked into that Iceberg the crew fired off white flares the SS Californian was passing nearby and his captain knew the Titanic was in a dangerous Iceberg Zone The Crew didn't spot the sinking Titanic but they sure saw those white Rockets the radio between the ships was useless because the California's operator switched it off the captain had a gut feeling Something was off so he flashed a Morris code light signal at Titanic
but he received no reply F because the Titanic had already gone underwater there was another ship Samson sailing alongside the Titanic it had plenty of illegally hunted Frozen seal meat from Canadian Waters abroad so it was sailing with lights off to remain unnoticed when they saw the Titanic's white Rockets they thought it was the Coast Guard and zoomed away Samson Didn't have a radio so they couldn't find out about the ongoing disaster the crew got the news about Titanic only when they got to the coast of Iceland the following month there have been many theories
to explain the Titanic tragedy and one of the recent ones says that there was a fire involved an Irish journalist went full detective for decades digging into the mystery and stumbled upon a game changer he came across a photo album that had been Hiding from the public for a century after the tragedy in the pictures taken at the Harland and wolf Shipyard in Belfast Northern Ireland just over a week before the liner sailed you can clearly see a massive 30t black spot on the ship's Hall Maloney researched the photos and eyewitness testimony from the time
and claimed that a fire spontaneously broke out inside of one of Titanic's enormous coal bunkers it was raging for a whole 3 weeks and messed With the metal critically weakening a crucial segment of the ship's Hall back then most ships had just one Hall so it was the only skin the Titanic had that's why the iceberg managed to punch a hole through the ship so easily if it hadn't been for the fire the Titanic might have Shrugged off that Iceberg Collision the company operating the liner knew about the fire but they decided to conceal that
fact they didn't want any negative stories in the press As they fac some serious competition in transatlantic voyages the Titanic was sold out so they stocked up on coal and made it sail the moon might have also played a role in the sinking our satellite heavily affects tides on the earth the close it is to our planet the stronger the tides are because of the increasing gravity of the Moon back in 1912 the moon was so close it made several glaciers in Greenland break apart Massive chunks of ice that broke off from the glaciers started
floating South the super moon event came just 6 minutes after a spring tide during new and full moons the alignment of the Moon the Earth and the Sun makes their combined gravity reach its peak and the day before our planet had come the Clos Clos to the Sun that year which made the gravity even stronger this mixture of events created perfect conditions for one of the most powerful ties in history It created the perfect conditions for the icebergs breaking off from Greenland's glaciers to move freely opponents of this Theory say that the difference in tital
force wasn't actually that big and it couldn't have been the main cause of the sinking the iceberg tored down the side of the ship leaving a huge opening in the hall it wasn't a continuous rip and damage was caused in several places some experts believe the ship would have Survived the iceberg if it had hit head on the Titanic had watertight compartments designed to prevent flooding in case of a collision only the first three or four of these compartments would have been flooded this could have helped save a lot of lives supporters of this Theory
put the blame for the disaster on first Officer William Murdoch huge fast-moving ships don't just turn in a matter of seconds like his beating car it takes minutes When Murdoch realized the Collision was inevitable he tried dodging left to avoid a direct hit but despite his efforts the ship still collided with the iceberg you know the rest the lookout shouts Iceberg right ahead the Titanic strikes the ice water starts flooding in third class passengers are locked up there aren't enough light life boats for everyone Panic sets in violins are playing the ship sinks well we
all know the story of The movie Titanic like the back of our Hand by now but what if I told you that Hollywood lied to us to tell the real story of what happened that freezing night in 1912 we need to rewind a bit the lookout shouts Iceberg right ahead yep that part was true just before 11:40 at night Frederick Fleet noticed something darker than the sea directly ahead as the ship got closer he realized it was an iceberg the engines were quickly reversed and the ship turned Sharply instead of hitting it headon Titanic scraped
along the side of the bird sprinkling ice on the forward deck if you remember in the movie Jack and Rose are having a romantic moment when they feel the ship shutter after hitting the iceberg everything shakes as if they were in the middle of a light earthquake some real life passengers reported feeling something similar after the impact but according to Titanic Survivor Frank Apprentice it wasn't Exactly like that he said there was no impact as such and it all felt more like slamming on your car brakes the ship stopped and that was that some people
even slept right through the Collision confirming that there wasn't such an Abrupt impact Mr Apprentice curious about what had happened left his cabin and went out to the deck when he got there all he could see was a little ice on the surface not the Towering iceberg that Jack and Rose saw but as we all know by now the real damage happened below the waterline where the iceberg had a jagged spur that slashed a 300t gash in Titanic's Hall Once the crew realized how severe the damage was they immediately began sending distress calls to nearby
ships asking for help at some point in the movie the radio operator goes to the captain and says there is only one ship nearby the RMS Carpathia which later ends up rescuing many Passengers but in real life there were more ships around it's believed that the SS California was only about 23 M away this ship might have actually seen the Titanic sinking or at the very least seen its Rockets exploding high in the sky yet for reasons we will never fully understand they didn't try to help let's get back to the story now people need
to get off the ship at 12:45 Lifeboat number 7 was the first to be lowered just like in the movie Women and Children were told to go first but in reality some women were hesitant and even refused to get into the lifeboats Mr Apprentice said this happened mainly for two reasons first these lifeboats were high and passengers were terrified of the 70ft drop from from the deck to the ocean below and second most women didn't believe the Titanic would actually sink it was called Unsinkable after all so the idea of getting into a Lifeboat seemed
pointless at the Time this mindset probably explains why Eloise Smith a first class passenger recalled that there was no Panic or chaos at first other survivors backed this up saying that no women or kids were crying but one thing that was indeed concerning at least for the crew was the possibility that the lifeboats might Buckle under too much weight this is one of the theories why the first few lifeboats left carrying only a fraction of their full capacity like Lifeboat Number seven which only carried 27 people in it even though it could hold up to
65 in total Titanic had 20 lifeboats which could carry about half of the 2,200 people on board that night but that didn't happen and now we know the passengers had no idea there weren't enough for everyone as women were calmly getting into the first lifeboats musicians headed up to the deck their only goal Was to play and keep the passengers calm that's a pretty well-known fact but the real story is that some survivors said they never saw or heard the band no violinists whatsoever it's not like Hollywood misled you though the musicians did play for
over 2 hours after the ship had hit the iceberg so maybe these passengers were just too panicked to notice the songs or the musicians started playing later than we Think now it's time to talk about the terrible treatment that third class passengers received the movie portrayed the crew as cruel locking the less fortunate below deck like animals giving them no chance to reach the lifeboats and save their lives but the official inquiry to the disaster suggested that wasn't true I mean yes fewer third class passengers survived compared to those in first and second class but
there were other factors at play many third class Passengers were reluctant to leave the ship clinging to their belongings and had a harder time making their way up from the cabins which were at extreme ends of the ship some survivors confirmed that they were not locked up in fact it was quite the opposite Mrs George wobby a Lebanese woman traveling in third class said that when chaos had erupted some Brave crew members and well-dressed first class Passengers had actually helped her get up to the first class deck and eventually onto a Lifeboat at first the
Titanic was sinking slowly bit by bit passengers reported seeing the Water Rising and hearing pops and cracks then there was a loud boom some said there had been just one explosion While others described it as a series of smaller explosions which they' thought had been the bulkheads giving Way and there's also a group of people who said they had only heard a rumbling sound so not everyone agreed on the sound they had heard but one thing is a fact by 2:18 in the morning the lights on Titanic went out and the ship plunged into complete
darkness as the bow continued sinking the stern rose out of the water putting immense pressure on the middle of the ship this caused the Titanic to break in two in James Cameron's movie This Moment Is pretty dramatic with the ship sinking almost straight down into the water but in reality the break probably happened at a much lower angle likely just below the waterline even so it tilted enough that people couldn't stay on their feet and started sliding into the water one interesting thing is that it wasn't until the wreckage was found in 1985 that it
was finally confirmed the Titanic had broken apart up until then survivors had given conflicting stories At least eight survivors claimed they had seen the ship split Emily Ryerson a first class passenger described it as if the Titanic had been sliced in half with a knife but there was also a small number of witnesses that insisted Titanic had gone down intact at the time this theory was more accepted because most people still didn't believe that the supposedly indestructible ship could break in half so why the conflicting reports okay So what you don't see in the movies
for obvious reasons is how incredibly dark it was when the tragedy happened it was like being in a room with no light where you can only make out shapes and shadows that's what it was like on the lifeboats this means passengers couldn't really see what was happening and most of those who were close to the ship either lost their lives or were too focused on trying to survive to pay attention to the details of the Wreck although James Cameron's film didn't fully capture how terrifyingly dark the disaster truly was the 2012 TV series Titanic did
a better job of showing the pitch black horror of that night even then the reality was much darker and more terrifying than either of these two Productions could portray on the night of April 14th to 15th 1912 the most modern and unsinkable ship collided with an iceberg and suck and it was incredibly scary just imagine a huge Cruise ship several times the size of the Statue of Liberty crashing into a massive chunk of ice and sinking it's dark and cold all you can hear is the rumbling and grinding of breaking metal and wood all that
surrounds you is the icy waters of the endless Atlantic Ocean there's almost no connection with the outside world there are no phones or Internet nobody else on the whole planet knows that the ship is sinking it's a real nightmare but the most shocking Thing is that the people who were on the Titanic that day didn't Panic they were calm maybe a little worried but there was no fear on their faces to understand why they weren't afraid during one of the biggest disasters of the 20th century you need to see what was going on through through
their eyes so you're a passenger on the infamous ocean liner your cabin is located on one of the top decks of the ship you've just had a great time with your friends at dinner Now musicians are playing a beautiful Melody waiters are serving dessert you go out onto the deck and enjoy the Tranquility of the mighty ocean at this moment you feel an incredible sense of security and comfort you're proud that you're one of the first people in the world to travel on the most high-tech ship on the Planet you go to bed in your
cabin and wake up because a crew member gently knocks on your door and asks you to go to the deck there's some kind of Issue but there's no reason to panic no problem you'll be happy to go out and take a look at the night's Sky the moment when the ship collided with the iceberg felt like nothing more than a slight push and some passengers didn't even hear it they realized that something was wrong only when stewards knocked on their doors and asked them to go outside your on the deck there are already a lot
of people here everyone is more or less calm passengers are talking About what might have happened listening to the conversations around you you figure out that the ship is supposedly sinking the idea seems like nonsense to you but even if it is true all passengers will be evacuated in lifeboats anyway at that time people didn't know they were half as many rescue boats as needed passengers were sure that everyone would be saved EV uation begins women and children go first no one panics or tries to get into A boat before it's their turn all men
behave gentlemanly and help crew members to evacuate women one passenger wants to get into the boat with his wife but it's not because he's afraid to stay on the Titanic he's just worried it seems to him that it's less safe in the boat than on the giant liner he doesn't want to leave his wife alone but the crew members explain the situation to him and the man Retreats without any resistance they begin to launch flares into the air No one pays any attention to this everyone thinks this is a standard procedure for a ship breakdown
if there had been many experienced Travelers on board they would have understood the flares were fired because the ship was in distress perhaps then people would have started panicking but most of the passengers simply didn't notice it the boats are lowered one by one people are watching the evacuation patiently waiting for their turn there is no Pushing or crowding nobody is screaming the actions of the crew help the passengers to remain calm they deliberately downplay the severity of the situation to prevent Panic someone says the boats are launched simply as a precaution also the crew
members claim that a rescue ship is heading for the Titanic and is just a few miles away some passengers say they see the lights of another ship the people who are already sitting in the boats want to Stay closer to the Titanic since this way they'll feel safe safer many passengers simply don't want to believe that something serious is happening even when they're told the ship is sinking they refuse to admit it how is it possible that the unsinkable ship can sink but this is how the human mind works in extreme situations it refuses to
believe that something bad is going to happen now you don't even want to think about it one of the passengers Says that it seems to her that the danger is exaggerated she claims that all people will return to the Titan Panic at any moment some passengers are afraid and still they don't want to leave the ship warm cabins and the safest ship in the world are here the alternative is the ice cold ocean and small unstable rescue boats someone refuses to leave the ship because they can't find their baggage some passengers carry all their belongings
with them They don't want to leave them on the sinking ship there are many immigrants on board and some of them don't even understand English the crew members can't expl explain to them what's happening these passengers misunderstand Steward's instructions during the evacuation they can't figure out the inscriptions on the evacuation signs many passengers are sure there's been some kind of breakdown in the engine compartment the problem will be solved Soon and the Titanic will continue its Journey people only start to realize that the ship is going down when it begins tilting forward and its rear
part starts Rising above the water that's when those around you start panicking some some jump into the water others climb into the lifeboats without waiting in line but in general there's no chaos and hysteria and this is despite the fact that there are about 1,500 people on the ship scientists claim that some Of them never even left their cabins those people refused to leave their stuff behind and didn't believe that something serious had happened during the evacuation the orchestra is playing this helps people to keep their cool they hear music and it seems to them
that everything will fine the music keeps playing on the Titanic almost until the very end at about 2:05 a.m. the crew lowers the last boat with passengers 15 minutes later the ship Goes underwater even after the tragedy the surviving passengers can't really understand what's happened to them they remember boarding the boats and moving away from the huge vessel and they won't forget seeing it go under the water but even after a while they still can't realize what a terrible catastrophe they've just experienced sometime later people began to write books about those fateful events they made
documentaries And feature films the news about the Titanic was in every newspaper it spread all over the world in any description of that day the tragedy looks like a terrible disaster but those who were there admit they didn't feel all consuming dread they just couldn't believe what was happening that day the tragedy of the Titanic might seem more terrible for for people who heard about it than for people who experienced it many people around the world refused to Go on board large ocean liners after the catastrophe they were afraid of what could happen to them
at the same time a lot of passengers who survived on the Titanic continued to travel by other ships there was a woman who survived three shipwrecks including the Titanic and she still continued traveling and what if people tried to raise the Titanic from the seaf floor this happened many years after the Shipwreck then the $5 million operation failed Nylon slings were attached to a large part of the sunken ship the other ends of the slings were connected to diesel engines for the entire operation a mini submarine was used a piece of the Titanic weighing 21
tons was being pulled up when one of the slings tore and then one by one the other cables began to snap to the huge piece of the ship fell back to the seafloor by that time the particip of the rescue operation had run out of food supplies And since the nearest shore was quite far away they decided not to give it another try it seems like we all cried watching the heartbreaking goodbye of Jack and Rose from the Titanic oops spoiler sorry but the real life stories from the sinking of the famous ship were no
less touching Joseph lar Ro was born in 1886 in Haiti to a wealthy family he was growing up without a dad but his mother was a a self-made woman and a respected Merchant his uncle was the Head of his country Joseph was fluent in French Creole and English at the age of 15 Joseph realized he wanted to become an engineer there were no engineering schools in Haiti so he moved to France to get his education the journey took him a whopping 83 days still in his student years Joseph met Juliet in a suburb of Paris
through a mentor they soon became friends and then it grew into something bigger the couple decided to get married there was only one Problem Joseph couldn't find a well-paid qualified job even after completing his studies because of racial discrimination the intelligent young man realized he could do better plus he needed to provide for his growing family his third kid was on the way his uncle back in Haiti promised he'd help Joseph secure a job as a mathematics professor his mother was overjoyed that her son and his family would be living in Haiti she bought them
first class tickets for The French liner laf France as a reunion gift but that liner had really weird rules separating parents from their offspring for meals the lar roas didn't want to leave their youngsters and make them feel sad on a trip across the ocean so they decided to trade their first class tickets for lefrance for second class tickets for RMS Titanic's maiden voyage the Titanic was all the hype and it didn't separate families so so it looked like a great deal they planned to Change for another ship in New York that would take them
straight to their final destination in Haiti the family boarded the Titanic on April 10th 1912 at cherborg they had 3 days to enjoy the luxurious State rooms a dining Salon a library and three outdoor prominade decks available to second class passengers Juliet sent a letter to her father from Titanic's final stop in Queenston Ireland she told him they were more than happy with the accommodation They had two bunks in their cabin and a couch that converted into a bed for their youngest family members the family made friends with some nice co-passengers with whom they had
traveled together from Paris she thought they had been the only other French people on board so they sat together for meals Juliet mentioned they had all spent time together on the deck of the liner she also wrote the people on board were friendly although some sources say The family had gone through quite a lot of mean stairs gossip and remarks on the night of April 14th their exciting Journey came to an abrupt end even though Titanic's Wireless operators had received warnings about drifting ice from nearby ships the liner continued to plow ahead at Full Throttle
it was around 11:40 p.m. when Titanic's Hall collided with the iceberg around 370 mes off the coast of newfinland the practically unsinkable ship was severely Underere equipped with lifeboats enough for only about half of its 2,200 passengers the nearest rescue ship the Carpathia was too far away to help a steart woke up the lar Ro family and took them to the lifeboats as Juliet remembered later she couldn't speak any English so everything that was going on seemed even scarier to her a little after midnight the crew received the order to give priority to women and
children when boarding the lifeboats Juliet later remembered a terrible panic had begun as people had been pushing each other to get to the desired seat at some point she felt they had pulled away her older daughter and thrown her into the abyss a moment later she had joined her Simone in the same emptiness So Pregnant Juliet and her two daughters got spots in Lifeboat 14 but they had to say goodbye to Joseph as the boat was being lowered into the sea he wrapped his coat around Juliet saying she'd need It and promised to get in
another life boat and see her in the little ones again in New York the 25-year-old Joseph lar Ro didn't manage to stay true to his word in a couple of hours Titanic sank underwater taking the lives of almost 1,500 people Joseph was one of them Juliet and the girls were among the 700 survivors who had been rescued by the Canard liner Carpathia several hours later once they reached New York they were looking through the crowds of People hoping to see Joseph again when it became obvious they wouldn't find him it was time for them to
decide what to do and where to go without any knowledge of English or money that had gone down with the ship Juliet managed to survive in America only for 3 weeks and then had no other choice but to go back to France Joseph uncle was no longer able to help them as others had taken his life 4 months after the Titanic tragedy in December 1912 Juliet gave gave birth to A son who she named Joseph after his father for the rest of her life she couldn't get over the loss of her beloved husband that's why
she didn't like to speak about what had happened on Titanic and told her children not to mention it in 1995 a member of the Titanic Historical Society interviewed Louise who was the last remaining L Ro child and the last French survivor of the sinking and that's when the world first heard about This heartbreaking story it inspired some plays and articles but it never got the same attention as the story of other passengers you probably remember the elderly couple going down together in their bed on the Titanic it was inspired by Isidor and Ida Strauss they
were both born in Germany and immigrated to the United States as kids they met in New York and got married 5 years later Isidor started a China and Porcelain business with his brother that Grew into the glasswar department at Macy's and turn them into multi-millionaires Isidor and Ida were well known in New York not only for their wealth and charity but also for their love and Devotion to each other in 1912 the couple decided to run away from the New York Winters and headed for Europe by that time they'd already been married for 40 years
in early April it was time for them to sail back home to New York they normally traveled on huge German liners but at that time they couldn't resist the hype of everyone talking about that new luxury liner the RMS Titanic that's how they ended up in one of the first class private Suites at the top of the ship the Strauss couple spent their evenings dining in front of a live Orchestra in a hall filled with fancy furniture and expensive wooden paneling on the night of April 14th they felt a slight Tremor and then left their
private suite and waited for Instructions from the crew they told the passengers not to lose their passes at as they'd need them when everyone got back on board but the ship was going under the Strauss couple were standing next to Lifeboat 8 Mr Strauss who was 67 at the time was offered a seat with his wife because of his age he refused it saying he was not too old to sacrifice himself for a woman he wanted to wait and make sure no women and kids were left behind Ellen bird Ida's maid Hesitated before getting on
the Lifeboat but Ida told her to go she took the easy decision not to leave her husband on the sinking ship Ida took off her beautiful mink coat and handed it to her shivering maid saying she wouldn't be needing it anymore Isidor didn't manage to convince her to save herself so they stayed together till the end some of the surviving first class passengers later remembered they had seen the couple standing peacefully on The deck holding hands just waiting just wait watched on in disbelief as he drifted away on a piece of wood in the freezing
Waters of the Arctic slowly drifting away JN looked upon the vessel he had worked and lived on as it raised its enormous Bow high into the sky and broke in half causing a sound that only a crack of lightning could replicate distraught and dumbstruck believing that he and he alone knew the Dark Truth behind the demise of the Unsinkable ship the Titanic 5 days earlier as the Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage Jon worked hard alongside his mates in the coal bunker stocking up the coal to feed the Titanic's Mighty furnace they had stocked
and stored more than Jon had ever witnessed on any other ship he' worked on but this was the Titanic the grandest ship to have ever sailed the Seas on the Titanic there could never be too much coal as they left Belfast and pushed toward Southampton there was a large Bang Decks that went unnoticed the furnace was roaring and the turbines were spinning pushing the Titanic forward at a quickened pace the crew cheered as the vessel moved forward unaware of the loud concerning noise arriving in Southampton Greg came aboard amongst hundreds of other passengers with 13
years at Sea his vast experience included the role as a quartermaster on six previous ships ready for a new challenge aboard the Greatest vessel ever made he was looking forward to this next challenge of his career Greg came with a wealth of experience especially with sailing through the Arctic his role was vital within the crew understanding the seas around the North Pole he would be a key Lookout as they set to cross the perilous path of the iceberg alley Greg had some concerns regarding the voyage the Earth's orbit was remarkably close to the Sun and
the Moon causing higher Tides this would make icebergs more prominent drifting them further away and towards the route of the Titanic as they journeyed to New York assessing the lookout tower and inspecting the available gear Greg found no binoculars this made him concerned but the sailors just laughed at Greg if the deck is short on ice cubes we'll be sure to plow right through a Berg to resupply a sailor laughed Greg didn't share this sentiment eager to find out why they had Been left short-handed on equipment since he had such a vital role on the
ship Greg inquired further sadly the officer with the keys to the binocular Supply covered had been removed from the crew at the last minute Greg couldn't believe something of this importance had been overlooked for such a mighty ship with so many people aboard and Crossing in a particularly perilous path this just didn't make sense but not wanting to be fined for breaking into the ship's Property Greg let it slide hoping that they wouldn't need the binoculars in the end ultimately if there were icebergs expected a warning call would be made to the captain informing of
any concerns little did Greg know that a warning had been received notifying of the dangers that awaited but the telegram didn't provide the required prefix which would have ensured Direct Delivery to the captain so the critical warning was just overlooked Jon and his crew below decks Prepared for departure stoking the engines he noticed an essence of thick exhaust far too heavy than what would be expected from the furnaces the crew searched throughout the lower decks following a thorough search they managed to locate the cause of the exhaust it was an ignited pile of coal within
a coal bunker unknown when it had ignited a buildup of coal had clearly been smoldering slowly growing in size the amount of smoldering coal was concerning The alarm was raised alerting an officer to review the matter the officer assessed the damage and confirmed with the captain that it was deemed to be of little concern as only minor damage had been caused Jon was unsure of this assessment as he knew that in confined spaces surrounded by Iron bulkheads an oven-like environment arises that intensifies the heat with time but the Titanic would power forward making no sense
to Jon as they had only just Departed from Southampton he was sure they would have turned back Jon and his crew were ordered to shovel the already lit coal into the furnace and continue shoveling until all the smoldering contents would be contained it was a possible but painstaking task that could take the entire Journey The Continuous intake of coal would ensure the turbines would spin at a constant accelerated Pace not what the Titanic was designed for it was meant to be a luxurious Passenger liner and not for breaking speed records however the crew would find
enthusiasm in not only acknowledging the Titanic as Unsinkable but also as the fastest Jon and his crew continued to shovel the coal into the furnace for several days the temperature within the bow was becoming hotter every day the bulkheads contained heat was so severe that it became weak at the seams in the iron walls and rivets two more days Lads just two more days Jon was Laughing trying to raise the spirits of his mates as they were working tirelessly but as they were all laughing joking and looking forward to dry land they unknowingly approached their
final destination the Titanic was speeding through the calm sea Greg looked ahead above in the lookout tower keeping a keen eye out as they were in iceberg territory now even though the way seemed clear false Horizons could occur creating confusion about how far objects In the distance truly were as they were traveling in the Gulf Stream Waters into the colder Labrador current air columns cooled from the bottom upwards creating a thermal inversion this incredibly high air pressure ensured fog wasn't present providing a deceptively clear Outlook but the thermal inversion can also create optical illusions showing
the Horizon further away appearing higher in the distance or masking whatever objects That could come before it these false Horizons could easily hide any icebergs that could be approaching Greg knew the Perils of a calm sea in the Arctic preferring the Rough Waters where it's easier to detect icebergs within waves peering from the lookout Greg was looking towards the dark abyss ahead suddenly within one mile directly in front a formidable image quickly emerged from the dark Waters surrounding Iceberg Right ahead Greg yelled to his mate who quickly called to the helm and directed them to
steer hard to starboard the helmsmen received the call In the Heat of the Moment he turned the wheel counterclockwise he then realized he'd turned the wheel the wrong way and quickly went in the opposite direction the ship aimed towards the iceberg veering to the port side whilst reducing reducing speed although there was a delay in turning the wheel since there Was a short distance from the signal and a fast pace that they sailed at it may not have made a difference as they approached the iceberg it appeared as though they'd miss it but over 87%
of an iceberg is underwater and as they came along the side the hidden ice underneath hit the port side bow piercing the side of the hull with a 12T tear the ship shook with all aboard a Ware that something was a Miss amongst The confusion and fear they were oblivious of the damage as they gathered their bearings six out of 16 compartments were quickly filling up with seawater the hull could only withstand four compartments filling before sinking time was ticking as the Titanic made its descent into the depths the weakened bulkhead with heated steel pillars
and rivets broke under the pressure and Sudden Change of Temperature from the ice cold water the call was made to abandon the ship lifeboats were prepared to be released while help signals were sent out to nearby ships the radio operator was guiltily sitting constantly calling out to a nearby ship that had been in contact with the Titanic recently there was steady communication with this ship over the past few days providing warnings of icebergs since the Titanic departed from Southampton the final Warning message received was just 1 hour ago upon receiving the final warning the operator
ignorantly responded shut up with the assumption that their warnings of icebergs were pointless following this unfortunate response the ship turned their radio off and provided radio silence the closest ship that was responding to their distress signals was 500 M away too far to provide any assistance in time there were countless Mistakes that caused the Titanic's watery end whether they contributed directly or from sheer ignorance the most tragic of them was the number of people aboard the ship 2,224 of them there were only enough lifeboats provided to rescue 1,178 barely half of the people the cause
of the Titanic crash was an iceberg or so we've always been told but new research has come to light that debunks this theory on April 15th 1915 Titanic the biggest ship of its time completely disappeared under the ice cold surface of the Atlantic Ocean it's hard to believe that such a massive and expensive creation could be destroyed by one simple Iceberg right well recent findings suggests that the real cause of the disaster was a fire not an [Music] iceberg for over three decades journalist sinan Maloney has dedicated Himself to studying the sinking of the Titanic
during his research he made a significant discovery that shed new light on the well-known story M discovered a massive black spot on the Hull of the Titanic which measured an impressive 30 ft in length he found it thanks to an unpublished album of photographs that showcased the construction and preparation of the ill-fated ship's first and final Journey can you believe that most probably the Fire on the Titanic had been burning at extreme temperatures for three whole weeks before anyone noticed it crazy right apparently the high temperature corrupted the metal making it 75% weaker that's why
the iceberg was able to make a hole in the ship if not for the fire the Titanic might have survived the crash because the iceberg apparently hit the exact spot we are talking about and this is only one Link in the chain of incredible coincidences that brought the Titanic down the people in charge of the Titanic knew about the fire and knew the ship shouldn't have set sail but they didn't want to go bankrupt and cancel the trip especially since there was a coal shortage due to miners being on strike the trip was already sold
out and there were no Alternatives other ships canceled their trips due to low demand everyone wanted to board the Titanic so the management bought up all the coal they could find even from other ships And set off it was all about making money to hide the truth they turned the ship's Hull so that the marks weren't visible from the dock and face the sea this way the passengers wouldn't see them here's another sad twist in the Titanic Story back then there weren't any sonar systems to detect danger so specially trained people had to watch out
for threats using binoculars but the binoculars on the Titanic were locked away in a special compartment and the Only person with the key Second Officer David Blair was replaced last minute before the ship took off he forgot to hand the key over to his replacement this mistake wasn't discovered until 3 days later when the ship was already at Sea if they had the binoculars they might have seen the iceberg in time and avoided the crash but even if they had the binoculars they might not have been able to avoid the crash crash because the Titanic
was going faster than it was Supposed to they were behind schedule and didn't want to ruin the ship's reputation so they were going Way Beyond the speed limits the ship's construction could sustain one of the biggest mistakes made on the Titanic was the decision to not include enough lifeboats even though the ship needed around 60 of them to contain all the passengers it was only equipped with 20 the designer Alexander carile had initially planned for 48 lifeboats but this number was Reduced for aesthetic purposes apparently having too many lifeboats would have made the deck look
too cluttered these 20 Boats were only able to hold a third of the passengers on board which was not nearly enough to save everyone in the event of an emergency what's even more shocking is that this number of lifeboats was technically legal at the time regulations for lifeboats were based on the tonnage of the ship not the number Of passengers this means that even though the Titanic was carrying thousands of people it still met the legal requirements for life boat capacity another serious mistake made by the crew was the decision to cancel the Lifeboat drill
scheduled for the day of the disaster Lifeboat drills were standard practice on ocean liners at the time but for no apparent reason Captain Edward John Smith chose to cancel it this meant that passengers were not Prepared for an emergency and the crew was not adequately trained to handle the situation when the ship hit the iceberg chaos ensued and it took over half an hour to launch the lifeboats instead of the usual 10 minutes some folks put the blame on Captain Smith for the fact that the first set of lifeboats left partially empty the very first
Lifeboat which had seats for 65 people only carry 27 passengers there is an objective reason for this at the beginning people Were reluctant to abandon the ship and didn't understand the gravity of their situation in 2012 researchers uncovered that Captain Smith failed his initial navigation exam although he eventually passed some people wonder if this could have played a role in the disaster during the tit T anc's final moments the crew attempted to send out distress signals to nearby ships including the Californian however the Californian failed to respond to the flares shot Into the sky and
the captain ultimately lost his job as a result of this negligence however Recent research has exonerated the captain and proved his innocence it turns out that light refraction caused by layers of cold air below warmer air created mirages that distorted the signals from the Titanic this phenomenon had been observed by other ships sailing in the area and is now believed to be the reason why the Lookouts on the Titanic missed the Iceberg completely historian Tim Malton supports this Theory and has further contributed to our understanding of this event it's unfortunate that the captain of the
Californian lost his job due to circumstances Beyond his control but it's better late than never that his reputation is cleared whatever the reason for Titanic's crash was it still keeps the minds of scientists busy to this day but let's see what the buzz was all About what made the Titanic so famous and unique the Titanic was massive standing at 175 ft tall and nearly 900 ft long the ship was so enormous that even the officers took over 2 weeks to memorize all the decks and passageways you could be walking miles along its corridors the construction
cost of the ship was a whopping $7,500,000 which would be equivalent to about6 $66 million in the mid 2010 es due to inflation interestingly the Production cost of the Titanic movie in 1997 was even higher at $200 million building the Titanic was no small feat and it required a labor force of 3,000 men who worked 6 days a week for 26 months the job was difficult and dangerous and workers had to complete tasks at the height of a 20-story building without safety ropes nevertheless they were paid a competitive wage of 2 lb a week which
was considered good pay at the time the Inside of the Titanic was inspired by the luxurious Ritz hotel in London the most impressive feature of the ship's interior was the grand staircase which extended through seven of the ship's 10 decks the staircase was adorned with ornate paintings bronze cherubs and Oak paneling the first class passengers had access to an impressive array of facilities including a heated swimming pool Turkish bath gym squash Court beauty salon and even a stylist to help Them prepare for dinner a first class passengers on the Titanic were pampered to an extraordinary
extent they had their own onboard newspaper the Atlantic Daily Bulletin and even their dogs were taken care of with a special area where they could be fed walked and trained during the voyage the first class meals were a grand affair with 13 courses and a different wine for each course these dinners could last up to 5 hours and they were certainly something to look Forward to with such opulence and luxury on board it's not surprising that so many people were eager to take the first trip on the Titanic it's April 10th 1912 a sunny spring
day you're one of the first class passengers aboard the Titanic just as the ship is about to depart from Southampton imagine everyone's excitement fresh spring air the sounds of the sea you're strolling along the highest deck Of the Titanic when you notice several lifeboats as you start counting the boats you recall the ship's capacity it's just over 3,000 people wait but are there enough lifeboats for everyone aboard let's look into the numbers the Titanic could carry a needed total of 64 lifeboats a number which could have easily helped to save all the passengers on board
chief designer Alexander Carlile planned to equip the ship with 48 lifeboats but the Titanic ended up With a mere 20 the fact that this number of lifeboats wasn't enough for all the passengers was not illegal at the time this was because the number of lifeboats required was calculated based on the tonnage of a ship not her passenger capacity speaking of the Titanic this number of boats was chosen for aesthetic reasons to make the decks look less crowded to the ship's Elite and highclass passengers after the final decision on the lifeboats was taken Carlile quit his
job passengers strolls on the Titanic's decks were pleasing to the eye but were they worth it in the end in 2012 a century after the wreck new documents related to the scandalous lack of lifeboats were uncovered it appears that a safety inspector named Maurice Clark proposed the addition of at least 10 more lifeboats 5 hours before the ship was supposed to set saale but since the ship's owners clearly wanted to leave on time his plea Was overlooked he was also warned that unless he kept this secret he would be fired in retrospect had the owners
followed his advice and estimated 700 more people might have survived that night the 20 lifeboats you counted those that actually made it on board could have carried only a third of the passengers even at their full capacity but tragically some of them were launched with as few as 12 people when they could have easily saved up to 65 People each to add to the disaster the Titanic's crew members were not properly trained on using the Lifeboat launching equipment that's why the boats were launched slowly in properly and sometimes without the right supervision out of the
20 lifeboats only 18 were set afloat correctly also passengers were not informed about safety measures a Lifeboat drill should have taken place on the 14th of April but the captain eventually canell the Event one of the many myths surrounding the Titanic and its catastrophic ending is also related to the lack of the necessary number of lifeboats there was no maritime law at the time that said women and children should get into lifeboats first but it was a universally accepted custom in such types of situations as a shipwreck shortly after the Titanic had sunk in the
icy Atlantic Waters rumors started to spread it was said that some desperate Men had resorted to dressing up as women in those final moments before midnight on April 14th 19 12 they wanted to get a spot on the lifeboats and have a chance to save their lives at the same time there's little to know evidence that any of the male passengers of the Titanic had actually done this in any case what happened to those 20 lifeboats that were on board the Titanic after the ship hit the iceberg what we do know is that all These
boats were launched between 12:40 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. with a total of 718 people on board by the time they were rescued by the RMS Carpathia at about 4:00 a.m. the same day only 705 people had remained alive it took the crew of the RMS Carpathia more than 4 hours and 30 minutes to pick up all the passengers and 13 of the lifeboats this was as many as the rescue ship was allowed to carry the rest of the now empty lifeboats were left a drift at Sea those salvaged were Later given back to the White
Star Line the British shipping company which operated the Titanic strangely after being returned they appeared to have vanished from official records the last image ever taken of the 13 surviving lifeboats was of them getting unloaded in the New York Harbor sadly and ironically that's where the Titanic was supposed to be on April 18th 1912 the lifeboats were then rid of their Titanic name plates or any other markings that Could have linked them to the ship some sources claimed that the boats were eventually destroyed but was this actually the truth the f of one particular Lifeboat
has been the source of much debate collapsible boat a the last one to leave the ship was retrieved by the RMS Oceanic a month after the crash at that time it was a shocking 200 mil away from the spot where the Titanic had sunk also in the boat there was a wedding band engraved with the words Edward toera a sad Omen to a couple that were lost at sea after managing to escape the sinking Titanic later identified as Edward and Gera Lindell the couple was traveling from Sweden to the US to relocate some accounts claimed
that Mr Lindell did in fact make it to collapsible boat a but his wife wasn't as lucky neither were ever seen again and the wedding band was eventually sent to gerta's Father the recovery of collapsible boat a was recorded in both Photographs taken by the crew on board the RMS Oceanic and by a detailed handwritten account of a fellow passenger they claimed that the Lifeboat had looked more like a piece of wood carried by the waves than an actual boat the first Lifeboat to depart from the Titanic was Lifeboat number seven it was dubbed the
millionaire Lifeboat it's rumored that the 12 passengers on board might have bribed the crew to row away to safety instead of allowing others to Jump in in 2015 some of the items recovered from this lifebo including a lunch menu a ticket and a letter from one of the passengers were auctioned for up to $70,000 by a New York Auctioneer soon after the Titanic catastrophy it became mandatory for All Ships to be equipped with enough lifeboats to carry all the passengers and crew it's more likely that the Titanic lifeboats being relatively new equipment at the time
were refitted to Be used on other ships such as the RMS Olympic which was the Titanic's older sister some of them may have been sold off to private collections or even l to rot after all they were seen as a source of bad luck and most people were unwilling to use them again on other ships unfortunately all the information about their whereabouts is hard to confirm now no official statement from the owners of the lifeboats was ever given after their rescue but although Nothing appears to have remained of the original lifeboats some full-sized replicas exist
on display in museums in Falmouth England and Belfast Northern Ireland one of the few surviving white star Lin lifeboats did not in fact belong to the Titanic but it did have a striking connection to the cursed ship this boat is the restored Lifeboat 6 from the RMS Oceanic which helped to recover Titanic's collapsible Lifeboat sea it was said to be owned by a private Collector but similar to the Titanic's lifeboats we don't know anything about its location today as for the name plates and other identification marks of the lifeboats the White Star Line seems to
have kept them because some of the these items were later auctioned and sold to interested collectors Even Rick Springfield supposedly got hold of one of the name plates one particular name plate was already missing by the time the white Starline employees had reached The lifeboats it was the name plate of Lifeboat number8 which had been taken by a sailor named Thomas Jones He later gifted it to another Titanic Survivor the Countess of RS along with a letter acknowledging the bond they formed on the night of the Shipwreck you can find other similar items on display
in different museums such as La Museum and arts center in Northern Ireland or Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum to be fair some experts claim that even if There had been more lifeboats on board the Titanic there simply might not have been enough time to launch them all that's how severe the impact was many researchers say that everything was happening so rapidly after the ship had hit the iceberg that it's astonishing that so many passengers managed to survive on April 10th 1912 the RMS Titanic set sail from England but this wasn't the launch of a
regular ship the Titanic was The largest liner ever built at the time it was 882 ft long that's nearly the size of three soccer fields and measured from the hull to the top of the Smoke Stacks the ship was an impressive 175 ft tall that's the size of a 17-story building deemed Unsinkable it took 3,000 workers almost 3 years to build but a mere 4 days into its very first voyage at 11:40 p.m. the ship collided with an iceberg and was lost beneath the waves of the Atlantic Ocean It took the liner only 2 hours
and 40 minutes to sink and of more than 2,200 passengers and crew members on board only 706 survived the wreck would remain lost for another 73 years hiding its many Secrets within the frigid Atlantic Waters and if it wasn't for a man whose whole life had been devoted to exploring the sea the giant ship might have remained lost for a lot longer that man was Robert Ballard as a Child Ballard was obsessed with the ocean this Fascination started when he was just 12 years old that's when he watched a film adaptation of Jules Vern's science
fiction novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea it had everything to spark a Young Person's imagination from Adventure and strange creatures to a powerful underwater vehicle called the Nautilus it could travel anywhere in the world you want it to Go from that moment life on dry land was no longer in Ballard's future when he was 23 he was assigned to the Deep submergence group there he helped develop techniques to search the ocean floor his biggest accomplishment was the creation of Alvin it was a small easy to maneuver submarine that could carry three people it also featured
an external mechanical arm designed to gather underwater samples while the crew remained safe and Dry inside Alvin the submarine quickly proved useful for a variety of tasks for example Le once it was used to track down an aircraft that had crashed into the sea but the vessel experienced a series of setbacks in one case it was attacked by a swordfish which caused the submarine to resurface quickly the swordfish still stuck in the outer skin of the submarine became that night's Dinner and in October 1968 the submarine was being lowered into the water when the cables
holding it SN tapped sending it keming into the ocean along with three crew members on board and because the small vessel was still open it immediately filled with water and quickly began to sink luckily the crew managed to escape but Alvin was gone bad weather hampered multiple attempts to recover The Vessel it wasn't until the following year that It was finally returned to the surface in time Alvin would be improved its Hull would be strengthened by titanium giving it a higher depth rating thus making it even better suited for ocean exploration the specialized submarine would
come in handy in many of Ballard's 100 plus Expeditions the man was one of the first to explore an underwater mountain chain called The midatlantic Ridge in the Atlantic Ocean and when he found thermal vents in The Galapagos Rift in the late '70s he also helped discover and document the process of chemosynthesis that's a complicated chemical synthesis of food energy by bacteria but his biggest Discovery was still to come Ballard claimed he'd never been a Titanic fanatic but he eventually became obsessed with finding the ship after watching other explorers try and fail as he said
Titanic was clearly the big Mount Everest at the time many Others had tried many that I thought would have seen succeeded or should have succeeded but didn't Ballard began thinking about finding the ship as early as 1973 and 4 years later he actually made an attempt he used the deep sea Salvage vessel sea probe which was a drill ship equipped with cameras and sonar but he was forced to give up when the drilling pipe broke it just wasn't his time in the early 80s a Texas oilman Named Jack Grim tried to find the wreck on
three different occasions once Grim was actually right over the Titanic but his equipment failed to detect it that's what we call Extreme bad [Music] luck Ballard was just biting his time he needed a plan and some help the first issue was getting down to the bottom of the Atlantic the furthest down he had ever traveled before was 20,000 ft and this trip took him 3 hours and that Didn't include the way back up Ballard knew he could use Alvin already enhanced with a titanium Hull to withstand the pressure of the ocean but he also needed
something that didn't require him to actually go down with it an unpiloted remote controlled submarine would be ideal but first he would have to create one he reached out to the authorities hoping they would provide funding for his project and though officials had no Interest in the Titanic they were willing to help ah but there was a catch Ballard had to First focus on tracking down two submarines the thresher and the Scorpion which had sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in the 1960s the authorities were hoping to study them to find out why
they had sunk in the first place they also wanted to know if they could be recovered or if it was safe to leave them on the ocean Floor only when he had sued successfully completed this task would he be free to use any remaining time on his contract to find the Titanic with no other options for funding Ballard took the offer he got to work first he created two new devices Argo was an unpiloted deep toed undersea video camera sled it was designed to take photos and record videos from a series of cameras mounted on
it it could work at depths of up to 20,000 ft and it could also explore Nearly 98% of the ocean floor Argo was supposed to be Tethered to a boat as the boat moved Argo would be pulled behind floating just above the ocean floor the camera would then transmit images to the [Music] surface the second device was a small robotic vehicle called Jason Jr it was also controlled remotely which allowed the crew inside a submarine like Alvin to get closer to and photograph Underwater objects Ballard was now ready he knew he had to find those
submarines quickly and it didn't take him long much to his relief the search was relatively simple and he was able to fulfill his obligations with 12 days to spare with almost 2 weeks to devote to finding the Titanic he set out to explore the ocean he focused the search close to New Finland Canada pulling Argo along the ocean flooor and reviewing the Images it collected and after a few days of nothing they eventually found riveted Hull plates in a boiler could this be it the next day a ship's large bow was revealed on September 1st
1985 Ballard and his fellow crew members realized they had finally found the infamous ship the discovery resulted in a mix of emotions Ballard was decided to be the first to find the Titanic's final resting place but he was also Overwhelmed by the sense of grief for those who had suffered when the ship had gone down over the next 4 days the crew explored the wreck they found The Crows Nest from where the iceberg had first been spotted plus there was finally evidence of how the massive ship had split in two before sinking with both halves
of the ship found there was furniture and dinner wear and sadly several leather shoes of Those who hadn't made it to safety were scattered about the ocean floor Ballard succeeded where others had failed and became an instant celebrity around the world you'd think that locating the Titanic would be enough for one man but not for Ballard in 2019 he took on the challenge of solving another mystery The Disappearance of Amelia earheart Earhart had attempted to be the first woman to fly around the world unfortunately she Disappeared Somewhere over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 she and
her plane were never found Ballard hoped that his luck with the Titanic would help with finding where aart had gone down but his expedition failed to find anything and though Robert Ballard has found more shipwrecks than anybody else it's only the tip of the iceberg it's estimated that there are over 3 million shipwrecks in the ocean and Ballard has Only located 100 of them now in his late' 70s the man is hoping to encourage young people to continue his work of exploring the ocean and its many mysteries in 1989 he started the Jason learning project
to inspire grade school students to pursue science technology engineering and math he has his own research vessel called the EV Nautilus after the name of the submarine in Jules Fern's novel A fitting tribute to the story that Inspired his career the Royal Mail ship or RMS Titanic easily the most famous steam ship in history was once the symbol of luxury and dreams that promised to come true it took 3 years and 3,000 people to construct it on April 10th 1912 the brand new ocean liner greeted its passengers with the smell of fresh Varn paint and
newly saw wood back then they still used lead for the production of paint and linseed oil as a binder so That smell must have been powerful when it was fully operational the giant vessel consumed around 850 tons of coal per day and the passengers would also smell its fumes another odor that must have filled the Titanic's deck at least the first class ones was the new scent by the famous French perfume house geran it was released earlier in the same year and quickly became a hit with the well-off ladies the perfume that you can still
buy today is a mix of violets and Iris with creamy vanilla on the dramatic evening of April 14th when Titanic only had hours to live the unknowing waiters were serving oysters lamb and mint sauce roast duck with applesauce and other Delicacies to their first class guests the second class was filled with the smells of curried chicken spring lamb and roast turkey third class passengers had simple GRL and biscuits that night at 11:00 p.m. as the ship got dangerously close to the iceberg the new Smell added to the mix it was a mineral odor with metallic
notes if you have ice in your fridge you must have noticed it takes the smell of neighboring Foods the same happens to icebergs they take on the odors of sea animals and maintain the chemical composition of the water that their made of if more people had known about the meaning of this particular metallic smell they probably still wouldn't have saved the ship but the number of people that managed to Escape the safety could have been larger speaking of smells in case you've ever wondered what space smells like but aren't planning to become an astronaut anytime
soon listen up you can try out o topace an aroma that was designed by NASA decades ago the idea of the perfume was to help astronauts prepare for their encounters with space at all levels during their training but hold on a second space is a vacuum so it technically shouldn't have any smell yet Astronauts who have been out there remembered it as a pleasant metallic odor something like the smell of welding fumes or burnt gunpowder they could smell it on their space suits after coming back into their space graft we can also guess what other
planets smell like based on what their atmospheres are made of Venus has clouds of sulfuric acid in its atmosphere so it must smell like rotten eggs Mars and Uranus also smell like rotten eggs by the way each Of the layers of Jupiter's atmosphere is made up of different chemicals that's why it smells different depending on where you are some layers would greet you with a yummy Aroma of bitter almonds or marzipan and others closer to the top smell like cleaning products the remaining planets of the solar system are unlike likely to have a distinctive scent
because they're mostly odorless gases in their atmospheres as for our natural satellite the moon the Apollo Astronauts claim that its dust smells like [Music] Gunpowder the fragrance of fresh cut grass makes regular mowing it nearly worth it but did you know that the grass isn't having a great time while you're doing it in fact it's sort of screaming for help and because grass can't scream out loud it expresses disc Comfort by releasing a mix of smelly volatile molecules it does it to protect itself From insects caterpillars and other similar creatures just love to munch on
sugary plant snacks when you mow the grass it releases jasmonic acid among other things it's sort of a signal to parasitic wasp that there is a caterpillar available these creatures deal with the grass as offenders and it can keep growing happily ever after from the point of view of the grass mowing is not much different from an insect attack so it protects itself the best way it Can the rain has an easy to recognize powerful smell also known as petor but where does it come from turns out some plants secrete oils during drought the rocks
and soil accumulate those oils compounds and when the raindrops hit they mix with water and release into the year sometimes these oils combine with chemicals produced by bacteria living in the soil the result of this cooperation is a musky odor you can smell in the woods or in your garden when you turn Over the wet soil ozone also adds to the smell of rain especially after thunderstorms it happens when a lightning bolts electrical charge splits oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere and they later recombine into ozone one Theory says we enjoy the aroma of
rain so much because it's imprinted in our brains different cultures have always Associated rain with something positive and we could have inherited that Perception now chocolate fans of which I am one this is for you there are flowers that smell exactly like your favorite tree it's a product of a tropical plant after all and since it's impossible to recreate the exact magical scent chocolate has in a perfume you can plant some chocolate flowers also known as the green ey Li Rel leaves in your garden these flowers look like daisies with yellow petal around a deep
red Center when you pick its petals the flow Releases the delicious smell we all love so much the leaves and branches of the plant also have the same fragrance now in case I got you interested you can find the flower in dry soils of Arizona Texas Colorado and other states with similar climates it blooms all year and the aroma is strongest on warm days the Bearcat also known as the beton does not only looks super cute but also smells like buttered popcorn butons prefer to stay alone and use their Aroma To mark their territory and
find potential Partners when they have to scientists tried to figure out the secret of their unusual smell and suggested it could come from secretions from the scent glands under the animal's tail further research showed that the popcorn smell comes from the bearcat's urine after the Animal answers Nature's call it leaves a sent Trail in the trees with its tail that often get soaked but if the real popcorn only releases its Amazing smell when it's popping under heat how do Bearcats manage to do it without a microwave well the answer could be in their diet or
more likely in the bacteria that come in contact with the animals natural fluid durian is a fruit popular in Southeast Asia that smells sweet and nice to some people but to the majority it's a mix of rotten onions and sweaty Soze the stench is so powerful that it's banned on public transportation and Hotels in some countries The Secret of durian is its 44 odor Active Components the mix is so complex that you can never tell what it's going to smell like and despite that horrible smell durian is considered a delicacy and is used to make
mostly sweet dishes like cakes and candy there was a smelly incident involving durian at a library in Australia the smell of rotting fruit in a Cupboard has spread across the entire building through the air conditioning System they mistook it for gas leakage and had to evacuate around 500 students and teachers well that stinks and finally if you've ever been to Natural hot springs or went to see some Geyers you'll never forget the smell of hydrogen sulfide or less poetically rotten eggs it's actually not only yucky but also highly flammable but it can also be quite
useful most households in Iceland use geothermal Springs as a source of hot water although it doesn't Smell fresh it's perfectly safe to drink and the smell doesn't stay on your body after you take a shower so there I'll Never Let Go Jack I'll never let go said Rose then she did let go and the whole movie theater burst into tears it happened when Titanic came out in 1997 all right who am I kidding it's really hard not to cry when you watch this scene for the 10th 20th and 50th time almost 30 years later but
did this great love story happen in real life or Did James Cameron just invent it for some good drama as much as I don't want to disappoint you Jack and Rose never fell in love on board the real Titanic there was a real Jay Dawson on the luxurious ocean liner but he was a crew member and his full name was Joseph the real life inspiration for Rose was the American Artist beatric wood James Cameron came came across her biography while he was working on the first draft of the script and decided to bring her Love
for art and family background into the story it doesn't mean that the movie is completely off when it comes to historical accuracy though the unsinkable ship that sank departed from Southampton England to New York and was 400 Mi south of New Finland on April 14th when crew members noticed the iceberg the contact with it lasted 37 seconds precisely as long as the corresponding scene in the movie remember this guy Thomas Andrews who was Wanding around with a small notebook and pencil he was the real ship designer Andrews was quite talented at what he did and
had worked on many successful projects before the Titanic he would normally travel on the ships he designed during the maiden voyage to make sure everything was going smoothly he boarded the Titanic as one of the first class passengers and was taking notes all the time after the unfortunate rendevu with an iceberg Andrews was seen inspecting The flooded parts of the ship with Captain Smith according to his sad forecast C the Titanic would have gone down in about 2 hours one of the stewards claimed that he had seen Thomas Andrews moments before the sinking he chose
not to leave the Titanic and didn't put on his life belt no one had seen him ever since another memorable moment from the movie is a boy playing on one of the decks with his spinning top this was an Accurate Recreation of a real photo that was taken on board the Titanic on April 11th 1912 the passengers in the photo are first class passengers Frederick speden and his six-year-old son Douglas the family was going back home to America after traveling around Algeria when the evacuation of passengers began span's nurse told him they were going to
see the stars they say he had successfully slept through the entire drama and woke Up safe and sound in a Lifeboat the following morning his father had also Survived The Sinking sadly an automobile accident took the life of Douglas just 3 years later one of Titanic's most Charis IC ladies both on the screen and in real life got her nickname Unsinkable Molly Brown for a good reason several witnesses remembered she was indeed trying to persuade others in her Lifeboat to go back and save more lives just like in that heartbreaking scene From the movie when
Carpathia came to the rescue of the surviving Titanic passengers Margaret Brown was helping lower class survivors and involved her fellow FirstClass passengers in the process once they all got on Solid Ground Brown organized a survivors committee she awarded the captain of the Carpathia for rescuing so many people and was really upset she hadn't been allowed to testify at the Titanic hearings because She was a woman you won't see any fumes above the fourth pipe of the ship in the movie it's not a technical mistake the Titanic indeed had it only for more impressive looks and
didn't really need that pipe back in 1911 the year before Our Hero's departure large ships would mostly sail with four chimneys they needed those to draw heat and fumes from their massive boilers the Titanic was a real engineering gem that only needed three Chimneys to function so the fourth was added for balance they thought the public would have been disappointed to only see three pipes on the greatest ship of all time the movie had an impressive budget $200 million but even that wasn't enough to cover all the possible costs Cameron knew they had to save
some money so they built the replica of the liner only on the starboard which means the right side they chose this side to make things look More realistic the wind at the filming location was moving mostly from north to south so with the fumes going out it looked like the liner was actually moving through the ocean but if you remember one of the first scenes with the Titanic departing from Southampton and people waving you'll understand why the crew had a problem with it the real ship was docked at the port or left side there they
found a brilliant solution and just flipped the scene horizontally To make it look real the letters and buttons on C costumes were reversed and actors walked in the opposite direction for everything to be changed in post- production one of the scenes I can't watch without tears is the elderly couple holding on to each other as they go down with the Titanic the couple who inspired this heartbreaking episode were real people some of the richest passengers of The Not So unsinkable ship they were Isidor and Ida Strauss and They owned Macy's when news of the disaster
spread they put on life jackets and ran to the decks along with others Ida stepped onto the Lifeboat but Isidor refused to do so before all the ladies and little ones were there Ida didn't want to leave her husband she climbed out of the Lifeboat and handed her mink coat to her maid saying she would no longer need it Isidor wrapped his arms around Ida and they remained on the bridge of the ship until a huge wave Swept them both into the sea so the bed scene wasn't that accurate and James Cameron later admitted he
had taken some license as a director you know this guy who was drinking from a FL ask next to the main characters as the ship was going down his name was Charles jugan from England and he was in charge of 10 Bakers two confectioners and a Vienna Baker aboard he was expecting to earn a real lump sum and would have been one of the best paid crew members if everything Had gone well the night the iceberg hit Joe Hinn was off duty taking a rest in his bunk he immediately woke up and sent his Bakers
to deliver bread to lifeboats he then returned to his room for a drink once he came back on the deck he helped others get in his assigned Lifeboat there was no more room for Charles inside so he ended up on the outside of the Rails of the ship finally when the Titanic submerged he just swam away and as the sun rose again he found one of The lifeboats and was rescued by Carpathia the contents of the flask must have helped him survive the well-dressed man who decided to stay on the Titanic forever was American businessman
Benjamin Guggenheim that last name Probably sounds familiar and yes he was from that famous family gugenheim was traveling with his valet his significant other a singer from France called leontine her maid and their chauffeur they all boarded the Titanic in France During one of the Short Stops it made after leaving Southampton when disaster struck Benjamin was helping the ladies get in their Lifeboat he reportedly said they were only saying goodbye till the next day he was sure the ship would be quickly repaired after helping many women and youngsters get in the boats gugenheim chose not
to fight over the remaining seats he and his valet returned from the decks to their first class suite and put on their finest Suits to go down like gentlemen everyone knows the story of the Titanic but not many people know that Titanic had two sister ships and that on the night of its sinking one of them was rushing to help but didn't make it in time bad luck seemed to follow the trio of ships but each one of them had glorious moments that live in the minds of those who sailed in them keep on watching
to discover story of awe Ingenuity and Ill fate and don't forget To click the Subscribe button and turn notifications on to join us on the bright side of life you know how the iceberg hit the Titanic how the band played to the end and how the whole tragedy unfolded but before it happened it would have seemed an impossibility for such a ship to meet the end it did none of that could have been foreseen by Whit Star Line the company who built the Titanic who had high hopes for what the unsinkable ship And its sister
ships the Britannic and the Olympic would accomplish the Olympic was the first of the trio to make sale on June 11th 1911 heading towards New York the sheer size of it would wow the crowds the Olympics maiden voyage went without incident and a crowd of 8,000 people in New York got to explore its luxurious accommodations while it was docked there there were high expectations for the massive ship but just around 2 months later the Olympic Crashed with the HMS Hawk the hawk got the brunt of the damage as the was left flat as a pancake
after the crash the Olympic made its way slowly back to Belfast where the Titanic was being constructed on the dock people could see the two enormous ships side by side as parts of the Titanic were used to put the Olympic back in shape a rare sight to behold and on April 14th 1912 the Titanic hid an iceberg and minutes later The crew radioed nearby ships for help that night the Olympic was returning from New York when it received the distress signal the ship turned around and rushed at full speed towards the Titanic but they were
so far away that they would have arrived next night at some point during the early hours of April 15th 1912 the crew of the Olympic decided they wouldn't make it in time and stopped course the survivors of the Titanic were eventually rescued by The Carpathia Olympic was set up with lifeboats for All crew and passengers after the Titanic sank it went from having 20 lifeboats to 64 changes were also made to the watertight bulkheads and an extra Hull to construct a type of double Hull was installed it was determined that a double Hull would have
kept the Titanic from sinking for several years Olympic was used in the war effort against Germany throughout the years Olympic Carried over 200,000 passengers which included thousands of Americans fleeing from Europe and troops battling during World War I one of the most significant moments for this ship was when it struck a German submarine and sank it it was discovered that the submarine Was preparing to fire a torpedo on the Olympic before Olympic rammed it the Olympic ended up sailing the Seas for three decades which earned her the nickname of the Old Reliable despite Some previous
accidents it went on to help the survivors on the HMS audacious when it was sinking and do what it couldn't for its sister Titanic eventually bad luck caught up with the Olympic the ship crashed with the Nantucket light ship and the Crash signaled the beginning of the end beaten up and after years of service the Olympic was demolished and scrapped for parts the Old Reliable saw many years of service and thousands of passengers but The Brittanic Journey was shorter lived when the Titanic sank White Star Line was faced with a problem since they already had
another enormous ship in the works white Starline began construction on the HMHS Britannic on November 30th 1911 around 4 months months before the Titanic sank although the Brittanic was the youngest of the trio of ships having been constructed last it was also the biggest they intended to name it Gigantic but after the Titanic's disaster they changed the name to bratanic since they considered it to be a lucky name with the Titanic sinking the White Star Line underwent rigorous investigation and many changes were made to the britannic's design the Britannic looked very similar to the Titanic
and it had what was at the time time the largest Marine turbine in the world able to reach faster speeds than the Olympic with Titanic's fate fresh in their minds Everything possible was done to ensure the safety of this newer ship the bratanic was eventually launched on February 26th 1914 almost 2 years after Titanic met its end after the Titanic's disaster the White Star Line wanted the Britannic to redeem their name the Britannic was on its way to becoming a successful ship it transported passengers for over a year and a half when the British government
requisitioned it and turned it into a Hospital ship during the beginning of World War I the ship became an even more impressive site to look at it was painted all white with enormous red crosses on its side to indicate it was a hospital ship one of the ship's surgeons Dr jth bont thought of it as the most wonderful hospital ship that ever sailed the Seas it could treat as many as 3,39 patients at once this is how the Britannic became became his Majesty's hospital ship or HMHS bratanic though The sight of This Magnificent ship must
have put a smile on a wounded soldier's face or two the Britannic didn't operate for long just a year after it was turned into a hospital ship the Britannic was making its way through the aian sea to pick up wounded soldiers when it was struck by a loud explosion the passengers didn't know what had happened but headed to the deck to disembark it is unclear what hit the Britannic but the general consensus is that it was struck by a mine left by a German ubot though some still believe a torpedo hit it the captain tried
to move the ship to a beach close by but the ship was sinking fast in the desperation against the captain's orders several crew members launched lifeboats and disembarked but since the ship was moving and the propellers working the lifeboats were sucked and destroyed by the Propellers though so much effort had gone in to ensure the Britannic was safer than the Titanic whatever explosion occurred left the Brittanic in the same dire condition as the Titanic in just 10 minutes in a cruel twist of fate it also sank in the ocean unlike Titanic's enormous death toll only
30 people perished in the sinking of the bratanic and over 1,000 survived so many people survived because the accident happened in the morning when the Temperature of the water was warmer and the Greek island K was close by to offer help in the end the Britannic only sailed the Seas for over 2 and 1/2 years the bad luck that followed the Titanic and the bratanic and the accidents and demise of the Olympic was remarkable but what was most impressive is that there was a woman who sailed on all three ships and survived Violet Jessup was
a crew member and nurse aboard the ships she was there when the Olympic collided With the HMS hawk in 1911 and disembarked safely 2 years later she escaped the sinking of the Titanic in Lifeboat number 16 and she showed some women it was safe to board the lifeboats you'd imagine that would be enough to keep her from ever getting on a boat again but not for her a few years later she served as a nurse in the bratanic while it was used as a hospital ship when the explosion occurred Violet jumped overboard was Pulled Under
by the Water and hit her head on the Keel but survived can you imagine her experience she must have had nerves of Steel all in all the trio of ships saw journeys of Triumph and tragedy ill fate might have followed them but all the survivors were left with Incredible stories to tell so tell us brightsiders would you have liked to have seen any of these ships in real life let us know in the comment section don't forget to give this video a like share it with your Friends and click subscribe to stay on the bright
side over a century ago the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean of the 2,240 people on board only around 700 survived since then the track tragedy has been the subject of endless movies documentaries and books and though we've learned a lot about the ship and many of the people on board we hardly know anything about the iceberg responsible For the catastrophe especially anything concerning its size but maybe we can find some Clues the Titanic was constructed by the White Star Line as part of its new Fleet of Passenger
liners at the time it was the largest ship ever built and it lived up to its name the ship was 83 ft long equal to 2 and 1/2 soccer fields placed end to end and 175 ft tall which is close to 10 giraffes standing on top of one another from the waterline to the deck alone the Boat was 60 ft High that's close to the height of a four-story building the Titanic was big enough to have Veranda cafes a restaurant a reading and writing room a Turkish bath a gym and squash quartz there was even
space for a swimming pool the liner could carry a total of 3,300 people including 2,435 passengers and 900 crew members although luxury was important safety was Paramount the Titanic had been designed to have 16 watertight compartments below Its deck if the ship's Hull was somehow compromised in an accident up to four of these compartments could take on the water while the remaining 12 would keep the ship afloat Philip Franklin vice president of the White Star Line said this was what made the ship truly remarkable it's believed that the man said there is no danger that
Titanic will sink the boat is Unsinkable and nothing but inconvenience will be suffered by the passengers he was so Very wrong the ship left England for its first and last Voyage on April 10th 1912 and all it took was a single Iceberg to bring that Mighty vessel down icebergs are fascinating they are formed during a process called cing when large chunks of freshwater Ice Break Free from glaciers and float away into Open Water they eventually melt away and disappear in the northern hemisphere the majority of these icebergs come from Greenland in The South they come
from Antarctica what you see on top of the water is only a small portion of an iceberg this is just the tip most of it up to 90% is hidden under the water only when you examine pictures of the entire thing can you you truly appreciate how massive icebergs are it's the part of the iceberg you can't see that is often the most dangerous beneath the waves it can have Jagged edges in random places a ship can easily get too close without realizing It resulting in serious damage to the bottom of the boat and it's
not just big icebergs you have to watch out for smaller ones which are more difficult to spot can prove to be just as dangerous a growler for example is under 7 ft long with just a bit more than 3 ft showing above the water and a slightly larger Bergie bit is less than 15 ft in size the dangers of icebergs were well known when the Titanic set sail in 1901 The Islander was traveling through the Inside passage to Alaska it collided with an iceberg and sank immediately luckily 138 of the 178 people on board made
it to safety back then there wasn't any special equipment for detecting icebergs the best tool was your eyes from a special vantage point above the ship called the Crow's Nest two members of the crew had to stare out over the ocean and watch for potential hazards the Crow's Nest was located at the front of The ship 49 ft above the deck it was attached to the Mast from this height a person had a good view of the ocean if they saw anything suspicious they could ring a large Bell to sound the alarm after after that
they could call from a special telephone to warn the captain of any danger but imagine what a horrible job this would have been especially on the night the Titanic sank the Crow's Nest wasn't a warm and cozy room surrounded by Windows instead it was a Large open tub exposed to the elements on April 14th 1912 the air temperature was around 39° F which is close to freezing with the ship moving at about 23 knots more than than 26 mph the sailors must have felt that frigid cold air pressing against any Exposed Skin the only good
thing about the job was that the shift only lasted 2 hours Frederick Fleet was the sailor who actually spotted the iceberg that sank the Titanic he was up in the Crow's Nest Working with Reginald Lee at the time Fleet kept track of the left side of the ship while Lee scanned the right it was 10 p.m. when the two men started their shift they had already been warned of about the possibility of ice but when you're cold and it's dark it might feel like an impossible task even worse the two men didn't even have binoculars
to make the job any easier Fleet would later insist that having binoculars would have prevented the tragedy with About 20 minutes remaining on the job the sailors noticed the iceberg Fleet rang the bell once twice and again he then called up to the bridge to inform the crew at first the call seemed to come in the nick of time the ship's engines reversed and the massive ocean liner managed to turn it wasn't enough to miss the iceberg though ice showered down onto the ship's deck the iceberg tore through the hle and water flooded in 2
hours and 40 minutes later the Titanic was gone and here we have clue number one the iceberg was big enough to be spotted with the uned eye in the dark of the night without any binoculars it was also tall enough for bits of ice to fall down onto the ship's deck since this all took place long before social media and smartphones nobody on board would have been taking photos or videos at the time so of course we don't have any footage of the actual Iceberg but there are photos of The possible Iceberg from later that
day the SS Prince adelbert was sailing near the area on the morning of April 15th 1912 the steward on the ship had not yet heard about what had happened to the Titanic but when he spotted an iceberg floating by he was compelled to photograph it why there was a line of red paint along the bottom of the iceberg indicating that it had likely collided with a ship sometime within the previous 12 hours a second photo was Taken from a ship called the minia which was sent into the area to look for debris from the Collision
Captain decter said that among the wreckage he had seen only one Iceberg he also noticed a streak of red paint on it from the photos and witness accounts newspaper reports estimated the iceberg to be 50 to 100 ft high and 200 to 400 ft long that's clue number two the iceberg that hit the Titanic probably started its ocean Journey from Greenland's Coast Heading past the Baff and Bay to the Davis straight from here it must have slipped through the labrador sea and finally reached the Atlantic and that in itself self is pretty impressive the glaciers
in Greenland create between 15,000 to 30,000 icebergs each year some small some big of these a mere 1% will actually make it to the Atlantic the others simply melt along the way we know that the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean where the sinking took place was Around 28° F that's below freezing for humans this could cause frostbite or hypothermia but that temperature is actually warm for an iceberg most would only last 2 to 3 years in the North Atlantic slowly melting into the warmer water based on this it's likely that the Titanic's Iceberg left Greenland
in 1910 or 1911 and was fully melted by late 1912 or 1913 but since it did make it to the Atlantic and managed to cause significant damage to the ship we have Clue number three we will never know for certain the size of the iceberg from that that day but we do know that it definitely wasn't a growler or a Bergie bit both those types of icebergs are much too small and if the ice was indeed scattered across the deck during the Collision the iceberg must have been a little taller than 60 ft the newspaper
estimates are probably as close as we're going to get the iceberg that took down the Titanic was indeed a formidable one And icebergs are still a threat as recently as 2007 the cruise ship sh Explorer Struck One and sank in Antarctica's wed sea luckily everybody survived the International Ice Patrol was created in 1914 following the Titanic sinking the organization is still in operation today made up of representatives from several countries using airplanes and radar the patrol locates and tracks larger icebergs making the information available to Anyone who needs it and preventing more ocean tragedies in
the process no one could ever have imagined that the unsingable Titanic would collide with an iceberg except for one man William Thomas dead well not directly of course it's not like he jolted out of bed one day envisioning the fall of the Titanic rather he wrote an empowering short story called how the mail steamer went down in midatlantic by a Survivor on March 3rd 1886 26 years before Titanic sank okay let's do a super quick recap Titanic was traveling from Southampton to New York in April 1912 in the North Atlantic the ship had an iceberg
and less than 3 hours later it was completely underwater out of 2,28 people on board just 706 survived due to the limited number of lifeboats and icy cold water another passenger ship Carpathia heard the distress call picked up the survivors and brought them safely to New York the Short story William stead wrote was about Thomas a British sailor who got on a passenger liner Bound for the us at one point the protagonist realized there weren't enough lifeboats for everyone on board the ship in case something happened a couple of days later heavy fog covered everything
inide luck was not on the liner side and it collided with a stray ship just like Titanic struck an iceberg only 200 out of the 916 people made it safely to the US the Main character managed to survive by jumping into the water and climbing into one of the lifeboats now you'd think that the story riled up everyone in the industry to add extra lifeboats on ships but sadly it received very little attention when it was published even more tragically William Thomas stead was on Titanic when it sank and he didn't make it the survivors
who knew sted mentioned that he had always been cheerful and had Loved to chat during meals he complimented the ship's design and how sturdy it was Witnesses also talked about how he'd been helpful when the ship had been sinking having given his life jacket to someone else he was a journalist by profession and was on his way to New York for a ceremony one of his most important contributions to monor journalism was the use of illustrations in every newspaper article he also introduced newspaper interviews And they're still used to the this day along with illustrations
but this story wasn't the only published work that predicted the disaster Morgan Robertson was an author and former ship captain who wrote short stories and novels his most notable Nolla is the wreck of the Titan it's also known as futility the book was written in 1898 14 years before Titanic it was a fictional story about the Titan an ocean liner similar to Titanic which was crossing the North Atlantic it's also a coincidence that Titan was just as fast as Titanic and shared many other similarities like size and design the book described it as Unsinkable and
the largest ship to hit the ocean at the time that's what they said about Titanic too another Eerie similarity was The Limited number of lifeboats it had the story took place in April and that's when Titanic set off on its journey and hit the iceberg the Titan story also men men that barely Anyone had survived that horrible accident unlike stead Story the protagonist of Robertson took a different path the Titan sinking happened somewhere halfway through the book so after the accident the main character went on with his life the book was brought back into the
spotlight after the Titanic disaster how could someone describe the events that took place almost a decade later so accurately many started to believe Robertson could see the future but the reality was that Robertson knew his way around a ship it was easy for him to write down the nitty-gritty of things without doing more research realistically one of the biggest threats for ships at that time was hitting an iceberg or colliding with other ships the next story sounds somewhat mysterious once Alex McKenzie heard a voice that warned him not to bore Titanic but when he turned
around there Was nobody there as he continued Walking The Voice spoke to him again but this time it was louder and more distinct he took the warning seriously and decided to cancel the trip and go back to Glasgow Scotland his hometown his grandparents weren't too happy to find him back home instead of on Titanic after all the ticket was very expensive that disappointment very soon disappeared when they heard that the ship had struck an iceberg John coffee Was a member of the crew of Titanic but he decided to ditch The Rock when the ship stopped
at his hometown in Queenstown Ireland his inner voice told him to get off the liner and he did he was only 23 at the time and for someone his age it could be a major career boost and an opportunity to grow despite the horrible tragedy the guy signed to work with the RMS morania just months after the Titanic sinking talk about commitment some added info was revealed About what may have contributed to the fall of Titanic the the constructors insisted that the ship was Unsinkable but many people later theorized that the vessel's steel plates had
been too frail for the freezing Atlantic water it may have caused the rivets to pop allowing ocean water to seep inside another theory is that there may have been a fire in the Hall of the Titanic that had been raging for 3 weeks before the voyage the fire softened the steel Allowing the iceberg to cut through it like a hot knife through butter some pictures before the ship set off on its Journey show black marks on the hull which could have been caused by fire either way the iceberg would have caused significant damage in any
case no matter if there was a fire or not some people also blamed those who designed the Titanic the ship was built with large joints at the bottom which probably snapped easily during the Collision Of Course these are all theories but we know for a fact that the iceberg was the main character of this drama and that the works of stad and Robertson should have been taken seriously either way this should be a lesson for the future helping to prevent similar tragic accidents by the way ocean liners and passenger ships wouldn't exist if it hadn't
been for Thomas nemit in 1712 he invented a steam engine that was so strong it could produce enough energy to Power a ship and a century later in 1819 the first steam ship traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to to Liverpool UK it only took the vessel 29 days to cross the ocean the passenger ship industry boomed in the early 1900s when it became easier for people to move to America or go on holidays as decades rolled by the use of aircraft stole the spotlight from Passenger ships since planes were faster and more efficient nowadays it's
quite rare for a passenger ship to collide With anything in Open Water modern Technologies can detect anything that can POS a threat and even predict Stormy Weather cruise ships these days are giants compared to the vessels of Titanic's era modern ships can carry almost twice the number of passengers and have amenities folks back then could only dream of most cruise ship these days have several restaurants to choose from multiple swimming pools and game rooms to catch a break if you're in the Mood for some fun you can watch live performances don't forget about the helicopter
pad because why not don't don't worry if you start feeling unwell the in-house doctors are always there to help any passenger in need and these ships are only going to get bigger putting Titanic and a modern cruise ship side by side is like comparing a corgi to a doberman back then Titanic was the biggest and most cuttingedge vessel anyone could dream of so who knows what The future of cruise ships can hold we might even have entire cities floating around that would be a really big boat we know Titanic from so many stories even a
movie but now we have its first full-sized digital scan and nope it's not like those models from before where we mostly imagined what the ship was supposed to be like this time we got a real digital scan a team of experts really mapped the deep sea floor around the Titanic together with the ship Itself we basically got a 3D view of the entire wreck which is like going deep down beneath the ocean's surface and seeing Titanic as if all the water has been drained away so the story of the wreck started in 1985 73 years
after the Titanic went down the Explorer named Robert Ballard stumbled upon it somewhere between two submarines that also went down in that area he was actually on a different task Back then so he didn't even have time to explore the ship properly but as he was searching for the submarines he realized how ocean currents affect sinking debris he noticed the heaviest objects sank quick and left a trail of debris behind the trail that followed the currents using this knowledge Ballard made a hypothesis the Titanic had broken into two and left a debris Trail as it
sank before he found the wreck everyone thought the ship just went down in one Piece after hitting an iceberg so everyone knew where the ship was so the adventure could start or not it was hard to explore it the ship is enormous and the dark depths of the ocean make it really difficult to capture its whole body in one go so we most mostly relied on glimpses of the decaying ship and had to settle with teasing scattered parts of the whole picture and filling it up with speculations and stories but in the summer of 2022
we finally got something Different a team of experts from mellin loaded a company specializing in mapping the deep sea teamed up with Atlantic Productions who were making a documentary about the project they embarked on a mission to capture the complete view of the Titanic they use submersibles those are vehicles that go underwater remotely controlled by a team of skilled explorers these submersibles Dove deep into the ocean it wasn't an easy job they spent over 200 hours Collecting information about the entire length and breadth of the wreck it was like a real life treasure hunt but
instead of finding gold and jewels they took something even more precious over 700,000 images of the Titanic from every angle possible yep they took photos of every tiny part of the ship even the not so interesting bits most of us would usually skip even mapping the muddy Parts was an important part because it Helped fill in the gaps between the more exciting things they discovered and this was a way for all of us to finally get a detailed 3D reconstruction even though it's been more than 100 years you can still recognize the bow of the
Titanic covered in Rust that hangs down like stalactites on top of the bow is the boat deck where a big hole gives us a glimpse into the empty space where the grand staircase once stood like a window into the ship's glamorous past its Stern Is now a wild mess of Twisted Metal as the Titanic went down this part collapsed and spiraled into the seabed the bow and the stern ended up separated by about 2,600 ft there's a vast field of debris surrounding this giant stuck on the seaf Flor this debris is like a scattered Treasure
Trove full of intricate metal work from the ship statues and even unopened champagne bottles there are also person belongings that went down Together with the ship like dozens of shoes resting across the seafloor it was a tough task to do go down and take all those pictures it may not sound that hard at first considering it was the vehicle that really immersed itself into such deep parts of the ocean not the people but studying the ocean is hard we haven't explored mapped or even seen over 80% of it the conditions are harsh and the pressure
becomes more intense the deeper you go and their vehicle had To dive down to nearly 13,112 20 ft below the surface that's like 12 Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other plus you have strong currents in that area so it was probably like trying to navigate through a watery Maze and submersibles weren't supposed to touch anything even the slightest wrong step can damage the wreck that was already so fragile it seems like the Titanic is Frozen in time so it will always be There waiting for us but in reality it's slowly disappearing it's pretty
obvious that the ocean water ruined it considering how long it has been down there but it's not just that the wreck itself has become a home for a specific type of bacteria Honus Titanic that even got named after the famous ship these bacteria have a special ability they can survive inside Rusty formations known as rusticles they kind of look like icicles those spikes of ice That form when water falls from something and freezes these bacteria have a taste for iron which is abundant in the ship's Hull for them it's like a real Buffet down there
and as time goes by these bacteria will keep eating away at the iron in the ship bit by bit until one day the feast comes to an end and the whole ship is gone it's like a slow but steady recycling Process so this 3D model we got because of the hardworking team and Technology comes at the best time because we never know how much time we have left with exploring the famous wreck this time we might even understand the collision with the iceberg better you know how movies always show that Titanic hitting the iceberg on
its right side well we can't even be certain about that the scans could help us figure out if the ship actually grounded on the iceberg like Getting stuck on it we can study the stern and analyze how the Titanic struck the seafloor that will also help us understand what really happened during the sinking maybe we'll get a chance to discover if there was really a strong fire that sealed the fate of the Titanic one Theory says that the coal fire had been raging for whole 3 weeks before the ship even took its first and last
last trip and this could have made its Hull weaker which means most of the Work was done the iceberg just delivered the final blow if there even was an iceberg as some people wonder there's an alternative Theory they suggested where the Titanic may have actually hit a hidden mass of pack ice instead of a typical Iceberg pack ice is made up of large sheets of ice that float near the ocean surface and can be difficult to spot they believe this pack ice might have drifted into the Atlantic from the AR ocean according to One Professional
Mariner Captain LM Collins that stands up with that idea if the Titanic had struck a regular Iceberg the ship would have sunk much more quickly than it did and since the Titanic managed to stay on the surface for a relatively long period of time Less Than 3 hours maybe this was a different type of collision the Mariner also said there are differences in what people said they saw when the Titanic sank he thinks these differences might be because of optical illusion In this case when people were looking at the ocean that night the way the
light was reflecting and the conditions at Sea might have made things appear closer or distorted so when they saw something in the water it might not have been exactly what they thought it was whether it was an iceberg or something else binoculars might have helped the crew members to spot the potential danger but unfortunately they didn't have any it appears they were locked inside a Cabinet and no one knew where the key was back when it was built the Titanic was one of the largest and most luxurious passenger ships with high class features like a
grand staircase a swimming pool and a gymnasium people thought it to be Unsinkable because of its advanced Safety devices its tragic sinking on its maiden voyage in 1912 proved it wasn't at all the case it wasn't until 1985 that the Titanic's wreck was finally rediscovered using State-of-the-art sonar technology ever since thousands of items have been recovered from the Titanic many of them being put on display or sold for auction things like jewelry a life jacket a menu from the ship's restaurant or even a sample square of carpet from the first class stateroom have all baffled
the public and told stories of the many onboard people scientists have even tried to come up with strategies to get the Titanic back up not because they Want to put it up for display but so it can be properly studied and more importantly to stop it from getting more and more damaged at the bottom of the ocean some have suggested filling the wreck with pingpong balls to make it float While others even considered injecting it with 198,000 tons of Vaseline another creative solution was proposed the idea of using a giant claw or scoop to lift
the Titanic nobody came up with this device using half a million Tons of liquid nitrogen to trap it in an iceberg that would float to the surface was also considered but all these potential strategies had to be eventually let go since the Titanic is way too fragile to ever be recovered as the Titanic's iconic bow railings are in danger of collapsing metal eating bacteria continue to chew away at the ocean liner's wreckage an undersea exploration company plans to gather data about the ship's deterioration in annual Expeditions they hope this will help them learn more about
the Titanic and also more about the ecosystem that shipwrecks create the over 100-year-old ocean liner is also being damaged by Deep Sea currents daily some experts predict that the ship could disappear in a few decades due to holes in its Hull the deck that passengers crowded on as the ship sank has caved in the gymnasium near the grand staircase has also fallen in and a 2019 Expedition found that the Captain's bathtub which became visible after the outer wall of the captain's cabin fell away is no longer there those annual Expeditions also gather data about the
creatures living at the site including crabs and corals surprisingly many species have only been seen there at the Titanic wreck so scientists are curious to find out more about them the most famous out of all these creatures is the Honus titanica a it's about bacteria and it was discovered on the Wreckage of the Titanic what's interesting about this creature is that it's able to thrive in extremely salty environments it's also been resistant to several antibiotics unlike other types of bacteria it's probably because of this super bacteria that the deterioration of the ship's iron Hull happened
so fast the Expedition will also look at the debris field and its artifacts on the site there are still traces of little personal items like Clothes and Luggage one of the most interesting stories about Titanic artifacts is that of the passenger shoes most of the Titanic items that have been lost at sea deteriorated or disappeared completely but not the shoes they seem to be able to resist the harsh conditions on top of that the leather in most shoes is perfectly preserved probably because of tannin a substance used in the tanning process of leather it helped
the shoes resist the damaging Bacteria found underwater all this exploring might have gotten you all excited if that's the case I have some good news to share you might even be able to join the expeditions to personally explore the Titanic you have to plan ahead and apply to be a mission specialist with Ocean Gate the company responsible for the journey however this experience does come with a high price tag of $250,000 despite the cost this once in a Lifetime experience is in high demand because of the limited spots available if you can afford the exploration
you will have the chance to collaborate with renowned specialists in Marine Biology oceanography the Titanic DNA and the deep ocean accommodations and meals on the dive support vessel are also included as well as training and guidance from Specialists before and during the mission lastly you don't even need to bring your own gear as the Expedition equipment is included as well sure ships have evolved and modernized over the years and these days we have technology that is way better than that available on the Titanic but this ship remains an amazing piece of History because of its
many unusual features like the fact that the Titanic's whistle was loud enough to be heard over 11 M away or the fact that the ship's Hull was painted with a special mixture of red lead and Lin seed oil which was Believed to be effective in preventing the growth of seaweed and other marine organisms however despite popular belief the ship's iconic fourth Smoke Stack was not functional and was only used for ventilation and Aesthetics probably one of its biggest flaws was its number of lifeboats despite its size and luxury the Titanic only had 20 lifeboats on
board which were not enough to save all of its passengers and crew once it hit the Iceberg the Titanic may be the most most famous shipwreck but it's not the only one the fleet of Kuai Khan tells a similar story this one was a large Naval Force commissioned by the Mongol ruler kuon in the 13th century the fleet was intended to travel to Japan and established the Mongols as powerful rulers in the region however in 1281 the fleet was supposedly caught in bad weather and was seriously damaged with many ships being destroyed Legend has it
That the fleet was torn down by a massive typhoon that came to be known as the kamakaze or divine wind this strong storm was believed to have been sent by the higher spirits to protect Japan from the Mongols the truth about its disappearance remains a mystery to this day however the wreckage of the fleet or parts of it appears to have been discovered in the 1980s by Asian archaeologists they dug across the site and studied the remains of the ships at A location near imari Bay the Shipwreck is to this day considered to be an
important archaeological Discovery that's because it informed us how well prepared the Mongols were back in the day in terms of their ships another tragic story is that of the RMS Empress of Ireland this was a British passenger ship that operated until May of 1914 this is when the ship was sailing from Quebec City to Liverpool but it ran into the Norwegian and Coler SS storad In the fog off the coast of rusi Quebec the Collision caused a large hole in the side of the Empress of Ireland and the ship began to quickly take on water
and sink the crew and passengers were caught off guard and many were unable to evacuate in time in total 1,12 people were lost in the disaster making it one of the worst Maritime collisions in Canadian history rescue efforts were hampered by poor visibility and the fact that many of the lifeboats were damaged Or unusable only 465 people survived the sinking and many of them were rescued by the store stad which had remained in the area despite its damage the sinking of the Empress of Ireland was a national tragedy in Canada and it led to changes
in Maritime safety regulations and the establishment of a coast guard the ship still lies at the bottom of the St Lawrence River where it has become a popular dive site for enthusiasts Titanic sank on April 14th 1912 and all Of the passengers belongings and ship's paraphernalia went down into the deep dark Waters with it these objects patiently waited to be discovered until 1985 Titanic sank fast and there seemed to be almost nothing left from the ship yet divers and small submarines managed to retrieve plenty of artifacts from the wreckage if you wonder what those surprising
items look like hey join me a number of museums have collections of Titanic items rescued by divers or Donated by survivors and their relatives and some of those items are even sold at auction so if you're ready to spend a pretty penny on an exclusive artifact hey why not the first artifact on my list is a pocket watch belonging to a Titanic passenger John Chapman John and his wife Elizabeth were on their honeymoon when the ship hit the iceberg Elizabeth was offered a seat on a Lifeboat next to her friend Emily Richards there was a
Problem though Mr Chapman couldn't enter the Lifeboat Elizabeth turned to her friend Emily and said farewell if John can't go I won't go either now that's what I call true love after a short time the ship went under if we step back and return to Chapman's pocket watch we'll notice one more heartbreaking detail experts leave the watch stopped around the time the ship finally submerged do you remember the iconic scene in the Titanic movie where the Ship's band continued to play while the ship was sinking the violin played by the real musician was sold in
an auction for $1.7 million in 2013 they say the band played Nearer My God to thee as the ocean liner sang since we started talking about the band we might as well shed light on a piece of music music found on the ship it was the song put your arms around me honey considering the fact that paper gets ruined almost instantly when it meets With water it's a miracle to see those documents another save paper document is the lunch menu the first class passengers wore their beautiful dresses and enjoyed their meals without knowing that it
was their last lunch this unique item was auctioned for $122,000 meals were offered based on class for for instance a first class passenger would eat roasted turkey with cranberry sauce spring lamb or baked hack in comparison a third class lunch Consists of stuff like rice soup fresh bread roast beef and brown gravy there were also cabin biscuits which the passengers would eat to diminish seasickness it wasn't just the menu a VIP ticket was also retrieved the ticket number is still readable 1342 number five is ardian perfume samples a chemist named Adolf salfeld stepped onto the
Titanic with various perfume bottle samples why did he bring these samples with him well seld planned To open a fragrance store in America 61 vials of perfume sank with a ship luckily their owner managed to survive and get there safely but his samples sank and were only rediscovered some time ago by the divers when we accidentally drop a plate it usually shatters into pieces now there's a question do you think an unbroken plate can be recovered from Titanic the answer is yes original Whit star table wear is proof apparently each class of Passengers didn't just
get different meals but was also served with different types of plates the retrieve plates have a green and brown floral Motif the edges have a gold rim and there's a logo in the center by the way they're sold at auction and you can find them online let's carry on with touching personal Stories the love story of Rose and Jack that we see in the movie is fictional but the ship surely witnessed many romantic Tales here's a love letter to Prove this the messages tell us a story about how life was on the ship during the
last few days it was written by Kate bus on April 10th she mentioned how seasick she felt and other things such as she was supposed to go to dinner in a half an hour this letter wasn't the only letter divers took to the surface for example there's the letter Esther Hart wrote to her little daughter Ava it was sold at auction for £19,000 this letter is probably the last Letter written on board since it was completed only 8 hours before the tragedy the letter is not that damaged because it was in the pocket of Esther's
husband's Cod another letter we can mention is Dr John Simpson's letter those words were the last words that he wrote to his mom mother let me introduce you to Edith rosenball she was on the ship with her lucky toy Pig Edith had been severely injured in an accident before she sailed On the big ship the toy was a present from her mother as moral support for her recuperation process it was actually a music box in the shape of a pig Edith used it to calm frighten young people in the same Lifeboat the next item on
the list is the Scout whistle of Lillian win benam she was a second class passenger on that terrible night Lillian was in her State room she didn't believe that the Titanic could sink after all it was the Unsinkable ship her friend came to her and convinced her to hop into a Lifeboat only then did she realize how serious the situation was moments later she saw the ship break into two parts as the Lifeboat floated into the night Lillian saw a crewman who was also rescued without a second thought she wrapped the man with her fur
coat it was freezing so she probably saved the man's life by doing that the young man wanted to thank her for her kindness so he gave lilan a Scout whistle it was the whistle he used throughout the night to call for help this pair of white gloves is one of the rarest artifacts recovered from Titanic these cotton gloves belong to a gentleman the owner's identity is unknown fabric can't last underwater for decades but the these gloves look fine and you can still see the fine detailing and elegance an alarm Bell has also been found yes
that's the famous Bell the one That rang to warn people about the iceberg Frederick Fleet and Reginal Lee were on Lookout Duty the night of the accident both of them survived fleet was the one who saw the iceberg before the ship Struck it what's ironic is that Fleet and Lee didn't have access to binoculars were stored in a locker in the Crow's Nest but the key to the locker was in the pocket of a crew member who was reassigned to another ship at the last Minute and didn't leave the key they could have seen the
iceberg sooner if they had had pairs of binoculars if they had had it the Titanic could have gotten out of the way divers discovered not just belongings of passengers of the crew but also pieces belonging to the ship itself our next artifact is the grand staircase some parts of this icon structure are recovered from the wreck turns out that this staircase became a meeting spot among first class Passengers if they wanted to visit the Turkish baths for a spa day or eat dinner they met at the staircase and went together this staircase was a sign
of how luxurious some parts of Titanic were another miraculously saved object that belongs to the ship is its plan it was one of the most expensive artifacts sold at auction the plan is around 30 ft wide what else the lomet was also discovered it's a device used to check the sailing speed of the ship and the Distance it covers the experts say that from the start at noon on April 14th the device loged 268 nautical miles and there's more a giant chunk of Hull known as the big piece was also found this fell weighs 15
Tons the larger Port holes were for the cabins and the smaller ones were for the restrooms this piece was found in 1994 but it was in 1998 when it was successfully taken out after all these years spent underwater it was swarming with sea life still Surprisingly the port hole still had glass now let's assume you were a diver and you could only take out one of these objects which one would you [Music] pick have you ever wondered how much of the Titanic is left these days now if you haven't been living under a rock you
probably know that it's been over 100 years since the world's most famous ship turned into a wreck the RMS Titanic the world's largest sea liner from the Beginning of the 1900s sank during its maiden voyage just a few days after leaving Port the ship struck an iceberg on April 14th 1912 taking down over 1,500 passengers of more than 2,200 who were on board the liner at that time as shocking as the this may sound the Titanic took over 3 years to be built and only 3 hours to sink and if it were today the ship
would have cost over $210 million to be made it was last seen on the surface of the Atlantic at 2:20 a.m. And for many decades that was the last time people saw it it wasn't until 1985 that the whereabouts of the ship were discovered by oceanographer Robert Ballard and some parts of the Titanic became visible once again one of the first discoveries made by Ballard's expedition was that the ship was indeed torn in half before sinking the early exploratory missions to the part of the ocean floor where the Titanic Now lies could only see the
hull And the deck of the ship according to Ballard the main purpose of these missions was to understand how to preserve the ruins from deteriorating another goal was to recover the huge number of personal items scattered along the seabed the Explorer later said the view down there was a sh talking as it was emotional in the field of debris around the wreck the oceanographer discovered plenty of small objects and personal belongings many of which he Brought back to the surface there were shoes some fancier than others they were pieces of clothing that belonged to crew
members and there were huge propellers if on the surface they gleamed and shined on the ocean floor they were embedded and devoured by sand Ballard pointed out that the area where kitchen wear was scattered measured more than a mile in length there were enough plates pots and pans to fill up an entire industrial kitchen for the first time Ever 3D animation footage reveals exciting images the simulations show the Titanic's Evolution from when she first set sail in 1912 until the state of her ruins today but simulations weren't enough for deep sea Explorer James Cameron who
envisioned traveling to the heart of the wreck for the first time ever in the history of the ship yep the same James C who happens to be the director of a very famous movie about the ship he has now dived 33 times to Visit the wreck of the Titanic here's some fun trivia for you the director says that his true passion has always been the ocean and that ever since he was a kid he wanted to study the sea directing let's say just happened to be his day job and when the possibility of directing Titanic
appeared he said yes just so that he could go and check out the ruins of the ship in real life now back to the wreck according to James Cameron it wasn't enough for researchers To access only the exterior of the ship they needed to go inside analyze and photograph what was left of the pompous Interiors of the world's once biggest sea liner Cameron piloted an Innovative robot vehicle equipped with cameras it helped the man to reveal spaces in the Titanic that no one had ever seen before since the ship touched the bottom Turkish baths for
instance still had their tiled walls standing up up almost in all their entirety these baths were Exclusively for first class passengers they were located right next to the swimming bath and the third class dining room and were designed in the moish style people resting there could get heating blankets and ask waiters to bring them anything they needed if the pictures from before the disaster were astonishing they carry a different kind of wow factor now when everything you see in them is hidden underneath the surface of the water another shocking Discovery was the ship's mast if
we look at the Titanic in its preying Glory the Mast calls much of one's attention located on the bow of the huge ship the Mast held together the transmission cables for the Marone system a system of Wireless telegraphy that's also where the British Merchant flag the Titanic flu was located the Mast stood at the height of a bit more than 100 ft and was equipped with a crow's nest nowadays the Mast is unrecognizable attacked by Corrosion it collapsed the Crow's Nest broke a part two now we can see why the modern-day Titanic is a real
treasure for deep sea explorers but as the wreck of the ship lies at an approximate depth of 12,500 ft sunlight is non-existent there so piloted missions depend on high-end technological equipment to survey the area why do you think the Titanic went missing from the public eye for over 70 years well because at that time technology wasn't Advanced enough For people to go down there as well as bring back good footage of the wreck filmmakers were the ones who drove this technology to its Advance by trying to film underwater they began by building boxes to put
their cameras inside and now deep sea photography is highly Advanced and allows us to Marvel at the awesomeness of underwater life of course taking pictures under the sea is no easy feat for one thing to withstand that crazy underwater pressure submarines Need to be really strong and have thick walls no thinner than 11 inches plus explorers need to understand how to film and photograph when there's almost no light around there was another thing that made documenting the Titanic even more difficult when the wreck of the ship was rediscovered by scientists it was covered with red
colored Rusty bacteria that made it even harder to take good pictures as it happens the color red does not reflect well Underwater which is unfortunate for photographers for this reason human operated vehicles that go down to tour the ruins are equipped with powerful lighting devices when you see some parts of the ship from afar they look as if reddish brown wax has been dripping all over the Titanic's ruins but in reality these icicle shaped structures are colonies of microorganisms when the ship sank it brought down with it an enormous amount Of bacteria that hadn't existed
at the bottom of the ocean before but now these bacteria together with the extreme conditions at the bottom of the ocean have turned into a disastrous combination for the ruins of the ship these red colonies of microorganisms actually feed off of Iron and Steel which is basically all that is left of the Titanic one kind of those microorganisms are bacteria called Honus Titanic they can eat up to 220 lb of Iron per day this makes the Titanic a colossal food source for them there have been lots of speculations regarding the life expectancy of the ship's
wreck after researchers discovered this bizarre rust but according to Cameron and his research team the Titanic isn't going to disintegrate anytime soon in one of the latest Expeditions down to the wreck a piloted vehicle was funded to identify specifically one state room it belonged to a very important Passenger sir Benjamin gugenheim yes just like the museum gugenheim was the son of a mining magnate and a member of the elite group that boarded the transatlantic journey of the Titanic born in Philadelphia gugenheim was traveling back home to the US us but as we all know he
never made it to his final destination for the price that ranged from 400 to 800 lb back in 1912 the equivalent of £84,000 lb nowadays one could book accommodation that was Called a stateroom State rooms on the Titanic were the most luxurious kind of first class rooms they were located on the B or C decks and were decorated in more than 11 different styles ranging from jacoban Georgian Italian Renaissance and the list goes on these rooms were filled with carved paneling and marquetry made from exotic and rare kinds of wood such as mahogany Oak and
so on gugenheim occupied one of these luxurious rooms and 100 years later one Of his descendants funded an entire Mission just to locate the precise State Room the man stayed in this Expedition turned into a documentary for National Geographic and they did manage to identify which stateroom was guggenheim's so kudos for them it was the start of 1912 a giant chunk of Ice broke off a glacier in Southwest Greenland the ice was made up of snow that had fallen thousands of years before the event Perhaps as far back as when mammoths still roam the Earth
the iceberg started its Journey it was a huge thing more than 1700 ft long and weighing over 75 million tons it was also a very peaceful chunk of ice it steered clear of ships and busy transport routes and then it somehow floated much further south than other Bergs did our Iceberg was lucky others melt long before they get to these low latitudes out of up to 30,000 icebergs that drift away from Greenland's glaciers only 1% ever make it all the way to the Atlantic even after melting into the water for months this massive block of
ice was still almost almost twice as heavy as the Golden Gate Bridge the icebergs top part was towering 10 stories over the ocean surface several days before our iceberg made it to the Atlantic Ocean a magnificent ship left Port it was a luxury liner carrying more than 3,000 passengers and crew members at that time It was the largest ship ever built it was the Titanic the collisions happened on April 14th when the ship was in the North Atlantic 370 Mi away from newf Finland unable to divert its course the ship ruptured at least five of
its Hull compartments they started to fill with water at an alarming speed the Titanic's compartments weren't capped at the top that's why the water spilled over and started to flood each succeeding one the front of the ship began to sink causing The back part to lift vertically into the air and then with a deafening Roar the liner broke in half the rest is history but what happened to the iceberg after that on April 15th the German ocean liner SS Prince alet was sailing through the North Atlantic it was traveling a few miles away from the
place where the Titanic had sunk several hours prior the German ship's chief steward who hadn't learned about the disaster yet saw an iceberg What drew His attention was a large streak of red paint going along the icebergs base surprised the man took a photo of his Discovery he thought the paint meant a ship had hit the iceberg within the past 12 hours the next person who saw the iceberg and took another photo of it was the captain of a vessel laying deep sea telecommunication cables the ship was sent to help in the area where the
Titanic had sunk the captain later claimed the iceberg heat scene had been The only one in that area plus the red paint it wasn't difficult to connect the dots in in 2015 one of these photos sold at auction for over $32,000 and still experts are unsure whether the image really shows the infamous block of ice it might be a simple iceberg that had been floating nearby at that time the great unsinkable ship was gone sunk into the bottom of the North Atlantic where it remains to this day but the iceberg continued on Its way perplexing
a few Witnesses and slowly melting into the surrounding water it would vanish completely before the end of the year when the Titanic began its fateful Voyage it weighed about 52,000 tons now how did they even get it into the water in the first place step one find tons of soap and natural fat step two dump it all over the ramp in front of the Titanic like a monster slip and slide they even put grease all over the Outside of the ship to make sure it didn't didn't get scratched dented or even rip open just like
that the Titanic plopped softly into the water and the workers and owners breathed the sigh of relief at least that part went well when they built the Aswan Dam in Egypt they needed to clear out a huge area for the new artificial Lake almost 100,000 people had to move out of their homes that was the easy part Engineers now had to try to move two huge ancient Egyptian Temples or they'd be lost underwater forever the answer thousands of Engineers and Builders the temples were built into a mountain so first they had to detach it using
bulldozers and jackhammers then they had to take it all apart like a humongous Lego project statues roofs walls sculptures pretty sweet Lego set then they cut the temples into bite siiz bits over a thousand of them each one weighed the same as three elephants so where do they put it all Back together on the same Mountain just 200 ft higher it took 5 years and about $300 million in today's money I think even the Pharaoh would have been impressed now say you're thirsty so you grab a glass of water but where does that water come
from in Saudi Arabia it comes from Salt Water you just need to get the salt out no biggie that calls for an evaporator Saudi Arabia's machine brings fresh water to 300,000 people not bad for so much desert the evaporator Weighs 5,000 tons and it's pretty big like 10 basketball courts big they hired a special ship to bring it from Vietnam to Saudi Arabia but even that was too small after making the ship a little bigger and making a successful cross-continent Journey the evaporator finally touch down in the Middle East then it was easy just grab
30 tractor trailers and pull pretty impressive but the largest thing ever moved on Earth is way bigger enter The Norwegian trol a gas production platform it weighs more than a Titanic and is way taller than the Empire State Building but the engineers weren't scared even though they had to drag the thing 120 mi from Shore they hooked up 10 powerful boats and pulled it along for a week that thing cost $1 billion to make so they had to be careful the Boats were actually pulling it in all directions to keep it steady then slowly making
their way out to sea once it got There it's four powerful legs were secured with concrete about as much as you'd use to build 200,000 houses that part of the sea can be quite rough so they had to make sure it wouldn't move at all natural gas can set on fire even in the middle of the sea you got to move out of town but you're used to your house your big kitchen cozy fireplace no problem take your home with you about 500 years ago an Italian architect was Constructing the local City's administration building but
the local churchbell Tower was getting in the way the solution pick up the tower and move it the architect built a wooden frame around the tower and shifted it using ropes blocks and a lot of people power since then a lot of buildings have been moved around but what happened in China changed everything in 2004 Engineers shifted the fu gang building about 120 ft it was the heaviest building ever Moved but it only took 11 days they worked day and night to get it done so fast 10,000 years ago a meteorite fell on Greenland it
was the only source of iron for the local people who started breaking pieces off to make knives harpoons Arro heads and even jewelry talk about good luck over time the locals split the meteorite named Cape York into a bunch of pieces Arctic Explorer Robert Perry wanted to bring the biggest piece back to the US so how Do you move 30 tons of Space Rock without trucks or paved roads plus it's 1897 and freezing cold it took 3 years but he did it he ended up building a railway with a special platform to pull it to
the nearest shore it was the first and last Railway in Greenland Perry sold the meteorite for $40,000 today that would be about a million in 2012 artist Michael Heiser erected a 340 ton Boulder over the entrance to the LA County Museum of Art It was called levitating Mass installing it was easy getting it there not so much they had to use a 290 ft trailer and six different trucks they only drove at night 100 m through 22 cities the most insane part it ended up costing $10 million the sweede ship Vasa built about 400 years
ago was almost a celebrity people were Amazed by its size beautiful decoration and gold sculptures first time out to see it sank why a gust of wind oops anyway about 80 years ago they Decided to pull it out one plan was to fill it with pingpong balls and freeze it in a block of ice but instead they just tied some ropes around it and used 18 lifts to drag it along the seabed to a shallow area from there it was pretty easy to lift it out it was mostly made of wood not much metal the
ship survived quite well because of the cold seawater and even floated by itself the shuttle inor flew 25 missions into space and in 2012 NASA decided it Deserved a break its retirement home would be the California Science Center the massive shuttle was loaded under trailers and driven through La at the amazing speed of 2 mph it was the first and probably last time that a spaceship would drive through a big city they had to clear a pretty big path and ended up chopping down a lot of pesky things like lamp posts traffic lights power lines
even over 400 trees but don't worry they Raised a lot of money from the whole thing to plant over 800 new trees the Statue of Liberty wasn't built in the USA it was built in France after 9 years of hard work and a serious amount of copper and iron she was ready to be given to the United States as a token of friendship sending it by mail would take way too much bubble wrap so they decided to ship it instead the statue was cut into 350 pieces loaded into crates and shipped over to New York
it took them 4 Months to assemble all the pieces back together talk about Humpty Dumpty meet bger 288 a self-propelled excavator and the largest land transport on the planet this Beast can shift thousands of cars worth of dirt a day it finished work in one Quarry and had to move on to another taking it apart shipping it and putting it back together would have been ridiculous so it just drove over there it took 3 weeks and only moved at half a mile m per hour to stop it from Wrecking Everything it drove over Engineers walked
ahead planting grass and covering roads with gravel and dirt now you're walking down the street in France see a couple of cafes maybe a nice Bakery and the world's largest gas turbine named Harriet Harriet's job keep the lights on in over 700,000 French homes this Mammoth turbine weighs as much as two Jumbo Jets and had to travel through France Germany Belgium and the Netherlands hey let's go Dutch the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is made up of more than 2 million huge blocks of stone no trailers no tractors just some good oldfashioned muscle power
each block weighs more than 2 and 1/2 tons it's like 30 of me these guys didn't even have strong metals like iron or steel they mostly used pieces of wood and stone hammers that's it for today so hey if you pacified your curiosity then give the video a like and share it with your Friends or if you want more just click on these videos and stay on the bright side
