The police officer approached the girl who was cleaning cars on the corner ready to scold her but when she explained why she was there he just stopped speechless and did something unexpected Kela woke up to the dim glow of dawn filtering through the cracks in the wooden boards the air was still chilly and she pulled her thin blanket tighter for a moment before shaking it off she could hear her mother's soft Breathing in the corner it wasn't restful it was labored uneven Kela glanced over watching her mother on the makeshift bed an old mattress directly
on the floor she moved quietly not wanting to wake her the bucket Sat by the door along with the rod and the squeegee she picked them up slowly her bare feet making almost no noise on the rough floor She paused for a moment just watching her mother the woman looked small beneath the blanket Her hair was thinning her skin dull and Kela saw her chest rise and fall too slow then too fast it always made her stomach tighten Kela left before the sun rose the narrow Alleyways twisted around the packed houses and the smell of
damp concrete and garbage filled the air a few others were already out shuffling in the early morning but she didn't stop to talk she knew her path bucket in one hand rod in the other she stepped over Puddles and dodged stray dogs soon the noise of cars reached her ears growing louder until she saw the busy street ahead she stopped at the intersection there were already a few cars lined up at the traffic light Keela set the bucket down dipped the squeegee and stepped forward the first driver waved her away without even looking at her
eyes fixed ahead Kela didn't let it bother her she moved to the next car a silver sedan she tapped on the window Showing the squeegee with a polite nod the driver a man in his 40s rolled down the window just enough to be heard no not interested go away he snapped then rolled it back up before Kela could even reply she nodded again moving on she reached another car this one already Dusty with streaks on the windows the driver didn't object Kela started cleaning dipping and squeezing the squeegee carefully letting the cloth absorb the dirt
her fingers were cold Wet and they achd she didn't let herself think too much about it she just worked when she finished she stepped to the side and gave the driver a hopeful look he dug into his pocket pulled out a coin and tossed it out the window without a word it bounced off the pavement rolling away hey come on Keela called after it feeling her heart drop the driver shook his head and sped off as the light turned green Kela knelt down and found the coin it was only a few cents nothing That would
help much today she clenched it in her fist wiping her cheek with her other hand she stood up grabbed her bucket and walked back toward the intersection the sun had started to rise higher now and the heat bore down on her shoulders her hands stung from the soap her Knuckles cracked she walked to another car trying not to think of how little she had earned so far out of the corner of her eye she noticed a police car approaching the sight made her heart Skip a beat Kela knew that car she had seen it before
the blue and white with its lights off and she knew who was behind the wheel officer valer his face was blank always looking Stern always making her feel like she was doing something wrong valer parked his car on the corner stepping out he glanced at Kela and then at the other side of the street as if surveying the area Kela swallowed hard and went back to cleaning the car in front of her she dipped her Squeegee again trying to stay focused she was doing nothing wrong she was just cleaning she looked up when she heard
the door of the police car close valer had his eyes on her now his uniform form crisp and intimidating His Radio buzzing softly at his waist he started walking toward her and she turned her eyes back to the windshield she was cleaning trying to finish quickly you there hold on a second valer called Kela froze for a split second before continuing to wipe The windshield she had to finish this car she needed the money Val deer's boots crunched on the pavement as he approached her Kela turned giving a forced smile yes officer she said her
voice almost cracking do you have permission to be out here valer asked he stood close arms crossed the badge on his chest catching the sunlight his face was expressionless but his eyes bore into her I'm just trying to work Kela replied She put the squeegee down her fingers trembling slightly I'm trying to earn for my mom she's sick and I need valer raised a hand cutting her off I'm not here to listen to excuses he said his voice flat this isn't a proper place for this kind of thing you could be in trouble you know
Kela clenched her jaw biting back her words she nodded I understand sir she said valer looked at her for a long moment his eyes narrowing like he was thinking of what To do the silence was Heavy the noise of cars passing by filling the space between them Kela felt her Cheeks getting hot her eyes stinging she wouldn't cry not now valer finally sighed finish up here and don't let me catch you doing this again he said turning on his heel and heading back to his car Kela Stood Still For a Moment her whole body tense
she swallowed blinking quickly trying to fight off the tears she grabbed her squeegee quickly Finished the windshield and watched the car speed off the driver tossed a few coins at her and she picked them up her hands trembling the police car was gone and valer was out of sight but Kela still felt the weight of his gaze she moved to the next car but her mind was scattered now she couldn't bring herself to tap on the window the driver looked at her then turned away Kela dropped her shoulders and let out a long Breath by
the end of the day kela's bucket was Half empty she hadn't made enough not even close she walked back home her feet dragging on the hot pavement her hands aching when she reached the alley that led to her home she felt her chest tighten at the thought of telling her mother she didn't make enough again inside her mother was still lying in the same position she opened her eyes slowly when Kela entered how was today sweetie she asked her voice raspy Kela forced a smile it was okay She lied kneeling beside her mother she placed
the coins in a small box they kept by the mattress avoiding her mother's eyes I'll get more tomorrow you just rest okay her mother nodded closing her eyes again you're a good girl Kela she whispered Kela bit her lip her chest heavy she sat beside her mother listening to her breathing tomorrow would be another day but the fear of what might happen next hung over her like a shadow she stared at the bucket By the door it wasn't enough and she knew it the next morning Kela woke up with a sense of dread that settled
deep in her stomach she glanced at her mother whose breathing seemed even more strain than yesterday her mother coughed softly shifting on the mattress the sound made kela's heart tighten she needed to make more money today or there would be no medicine no rent nothing Kela picked up her bucket and Rod slipping out the door just as the First rays of sunlight pierced the dusty Windows she walked through the narrow Lanes of the fava her footsteps echoing in the Silence of the early morning there was no time to waste and she knew that staying out
longer might be her only option today the intersection was already busy when she arrived she set her bucket down and glanced around nervously half expecting to see Val's police car she tried to shake off the worry and get to work a red car rolled Up to the light and Kela approached with her best smile holding up her squeegee the driver a young man wearing sunglasses raised an eyebrow and gave her a dismissive wave Kela tried not to let it affect her and moved to the next car a middle-aged woman nodded at her and Kela quickly
got to work her hands moving with the familiarity of routine she dipped the squeegee into the bucket letting the water flow over the dust and Grime on the window she was almost Finished when she heard a familiar noise the soft crackle of a police radio her breath caught and her head snapped up Val's car was back he parked on the opposite corner and Kela could see him watching her her hands fumbled and she almost dropped the squeegee she tried to focus on her work but her heart was pounding hey you missed a spot the woman
in the car shouted impatiently Kela nodded quickly finishing up and giving the woman a Polite smile the few coins tossed her way clinked into her hand and she moved back to her bucket valer stepped out of his car adjusting his belt he looked straight at Kela his face expressionless he began walking across the intersection his boots heavy on the pavement Keela took a deep breath trying to steady herself she couldn't let him see her scared Valia stopped a few feet Away didn't I tell you yesterday to clear out he asked his voice even but firm
Kela nodded swallowing hard I I just need to make some money for my mom she's she hesitated she's really sick I need the money to get her medicine valar's eyes narrowed slightly and he crossed his arms this isn't a place for a kid like you it's not safe he said looking around at the busy street I could write you up you know Kela shook her head quickly please officer I don't Have anywhere else to go I just need to make enough to get by that's all she pleaded her voice barely a whisper by the end
valer sighed his eyes still on her for a moment there was silence between them just the hum of engines and the occasional honk of a horn he didn't say anything just stared at her like he was trying to decide something listen he finally said this is the last time I'm letting you off if I catch you here Again you're coming with me he gestured toward his car his tone leaving no room for argument Kela looked down at her feet her cheeks burning she nodded yes sir she muttered gripping the handle of her squeegee tightly valer
turned away heading back to his car Kela watched him leave the knot in her chest growing tighter her legs felt weak and she took a moment to steady herself she turned back to the street but her resolve had crumbled she didn't know what to do her Eyes scanned the passing cars but she couldn't bring herself to move she couldn't bring herself to ask again the hours dragged on and Kela barely made enough to buy a few rolls of bread let alone the medicine her mother needed every time she looked up she half expected to see
valar's car again his Stern eyes fixed on her it made her hesitate made her second guess every step she took toward a new car by the afternoon Kela was exhausted she sat on The curb her hands Roar from scrubbing her legs aching the bucket sat beside her the water murky now and she stared at the few coins she had managed to collect it wasn't enough it was never enough the light turned red and cars stopped in front of her Kela looked up seeing the opportunity but she couldn't move her hands were shaking and the fear
of being yelled at or Worse being taken away kept her glued to the pavement a car honked and Kela flinched a driver Was waving her over gesturing toward the windshield Kela stood up her body moving on autopilot she cleaned the window quickly her eyes darting around searching for any sign of valer she finished accepted the coins without looking at the driver and went back to the curb when the sun began to set Kela picked up her bucket her shoulders slumped she knew she had to go home but the thought of facing her mother with almost
nothing made her chest feel like It was being crushed she took a deep breath trying to hold back the tears that burned at the corners of her eyes the walk home felt longer today her feet dragged along the dirt Paths of the flla and the sounds of the evening dogs barking people calling out to each other felt distant almost muted Kela reached the door door and paused wiping her face quickly before pushing it open her mother looked up her eyes tired but hopeful how did it go today sweetie she Asked her voice just above a
whisper Keela forced a smile setting the bucket down by the door it was okay she lied again her voice cracking slightly she moved to the corner where they kept their small stash of money dropping the coins inside it barely made a sound the few coins barely clinking against the rest her mother tried to sit up wincing don't push yourself too hard Kela she said her eyes soft we'll be okay Somehow Kela nodded though she didn't believe it she helped her mother lie back down pulling the thin blanket over her just rest mom I'll take care
of everything she said her voice trembling her mother closed her eyes a small smile on her lips I know you will she whispered Kela sat beside her staring at the darkening Sky through the small window the fear of Tomorrow settled in her chest like a stone she had to find a way to make it work somehow she had to Find a way but right now all she could do was sit there and listen to her mother's shallow breaths hoping that tomorrow wouldn't be as impossible as today had been the next day Kela woke up to
the sound of her mother's harsh rattling cough it cut through the early morning quiet and Kela felt her heart drop she turned her head seeing her mother curled up under the thin blanket her face pale eyes half open as she struggled for air mom Kela whispered Kneeling beside her she reached out her hand hovering over her mother's back unsure of what to do her mother tried to smile but it looked looked more like a Grimace I'm fine sweetie just just need a moment she said but her voice was shaky the words broken by more coughing
kela's chest felt tight like it was hard for her to breathe too she clenched her jaw trying not to let the Panic show she grabbed a bottle of water her hands trembling as she Twisted off the cap and Handed it to her mother here just take it easy okay Kela said her voice softer than usual her mother took a few sips her hands almost as shaky as kela's she let out a sigh closing her eyes and leaned back onto the mattress Keela sat there for a moment longer watching her mother's breathing waiting for it to
even out she knew she had to leave soon but it felt wrong leaving her mother like this go on Kela her mother whispered her eyes still Closed we need we need the money Kela nodded swallowing the lump in her throat she stood up her legs feeling heavy and picked up her bucket and Rod she looked at her mother one last time before slipping out the door her heart pounding she knew her mother was right there was no other choice as Kela made her way through the narrow streets she tried to shake off the feeling of
dread that weighed her down The sounds of the flla were the same as always dogs barking people calling out but today it all felt more distant like she was moving through a fog she walked faster her bare feet padding quietly on the dirt path the bucket banging against her leg when she reached the intersection she paused staring at the cars that rushed by she set her bucket down dipping her squeegee in and stepped forward the first car a blue sedan rolled to a stop at the light Kela Tapped on the window and the driver waved
her off not even glancing at her she moved on to the next car then the next most of them waved her away some ignoring her completely her stomach churned and she clenched her jaw trying to keep her Focus she needed to make money today more than yesterday she couldn't go back empty-handed again finally a driver a middle-aged man in a white pickup nodded and Kela got to work she dipped the squeegee the cold water Running down her fingers as she scrubbed the windshield she moved quickly trying to ignore the ache in her hands The Sting
in her cracked skin when she finished the man handed her a few coins and Kela gave a small nod thanks she muttered stepping away she looked around spotting another car pulling up she stepped forward her heart pounding her eyes scanning for any sign of valar's police car she didn't see it but the fear still clung to her It made her hands unsteady her movements hesitant a red sedan pulled up and Kela moved toward it her squeegee ready she knocked on the window and the driver a woman in her 40s looked at her with a frown
what do you want the woman asked her voice sharp Kela swallowed her throat dry just trying to clean your windows mom I can get lost the woman snapped rolling her window up without another word Kela stepped back her face hot the rejection stinging more than Usual today she clenched her fists Turning Away trying to breathe it felt like everyone was against her today like the whole world was pushing her down and she couldn't fight back back as the day went on Kela managed to clean a few more cars but each one felt like a struggle
by the time the sun was high overhead her body was aching her feet sore from standing on the hot pavement she sat down on the curb her bucket beside her and counted the coins she had made it Wasn't enough nowhere near enough the knot in her chest tightened and Kela closed her eyes pressing her hands to her face she needed to make more she needed to find a way she couldn't let her mother down not now not when things were getting worse but no matter how hard she tried it felt like she was always falling
short she heard a voice behind her a deep Stern voice that made her stomach drop Kela turned her eyes widening when She saw valer standing there his arms crossed his eyes fixed on her you're still here he asked his voice low Kela swallowed hard her heart pounding in her ears she stood up quickly grabbing her bucket I'm just trying to make some money she said her voice barely above a whisper valer sighed shaking his head he looked at her for a long moment his eyes narrowing you know this isn't allowed I could take you in
right now he said Keela's hands tightened around the Handle of her bucket her breath catching in her throat please officer she said her voice trembling I don't have anywhere else to go I just need enough for my mom she's she's really sick valer stared at her his face hard unreadable Kela felt her eyes sting tears threatening to fall she blinked quickly trying to hold them back she couldn't cry not in front of him finally valer sighed again he looked away rubbing the back of his neck go home he said his Voice softer this time just
go home and don't let me catch you here again Kela nodded quickly her throat tight thank you she whispered her voice cracking she turned and walked away her bucket banging against her leg her vision blurred and she wiped her eyes quickly trying to keep herself together the walk home felt like it took forever each step was Heavy her legs weak her hands trembling when she reached the door of her home she paused taking a Deep breath before pushing it open inside her mother was lying on the mattress her breathing still labored she opened her eyes
when Kela walked in her lips curving into a tired smile did you do okay today sweetie her mother asked her voice barely a whisper Kela forced a smile setting her bucket down she knelt beside her mother taking her hand it was okay she lied again her voice cracking I got some money I'll get more tomorrow her mother nodded her eyes Closing you're such a good girl Kela always always trying so hard she whispered kela's chest felt tight her throat aching she held her mother's hand her eyes stinging she didn't know how how much longer she
could keep doing this how much longer she could keep pretending everything was okay but for now she had to for her mother's sake she had to the sun barely peaked over the rooftops when Kela was already up the night had been Restless her mother's Cough had worsened echoing painfully through the small room the frail woman lay there eyes closed exhausted from the constant struggle just to breathe Kela knew she couldn't keep lying to her mother they were running out of time and if she didn't find a way to get medicine soon things could take a
turn for the worse Kela picked up her bucket and Rod her heart heavy with worry she glanced at her mother One Last Time hesitating before leaving there was no smile today No encouraging nod her mother was too weak her chest rising and falling slowly her face drawn and pale Kela clenched her teeth trying to keep her Focus she had to go there was no other option the streets were almost empty as she made her way to the intersection the morning was quiet but not peaceful it felt tense like something heavy was hanging over her Kela
reached the busy street corner and cars already lined up at the light she moved forward trying to ignore the Gwing fear that today would be just like yesterday the the first few drivers waved her off without a glance and Kela kept moving her fingers tightening around the handle of the squeegee a black SUV pulled up and she knocked on the window giving the driver a small hopeful smile the window rolled down halfway and the driver a woman with sunglasses frowned at her do you even have a license to do this the woman asked her tone
cold Kela shook her head No Mom but I the woman rolled the window up before Kela could finish Kela stepped back her face burning she could feel tears pricking at her eyes but she blinked them away she moved on her hands shaking slightly more cars came more drivers waved her off the hours passed and with each car that refused Kela felt herself growing more desperate her mother needed her she couldn't let her down not now she had to keep trying It was almost midday when Kela saw the familiar blue and white police car pull up
at the corner her stomach dropped valer he was back Kela froze her squeegee halfway dipped into the bucket she watched as he stepped out of the car adjusting his belt his eyes scanning the intersection Kela felt a wave of panic she knew she should leave but something inside her wouldn't let her move instead she took a deep breath setting the squeegee down and walking toward valer Her heart was pounding her throat dry but she knew she had to do this she had to try one more time officer valer she called her voice shaky but loud
enough to be heard over the noise of the street valer turned his eyes narrowing when he saw her he frowned Crossing his arms you again he said his voice flat didn't I tell you to leave this place Kela swallowed hard nodding I know sir I know you did she said her voice trembling but I I need your help please just Listen Val's frown deepened but he didn't interrupt he watched her his eyes unreadable Kela took another deep breath her hands trembling at her sides my mom she's really sick Kea said her voice breaking slightly I
need to make money to buy her medicine she can't she can't even get out of bed anymore and if I don't do this I don't know what will happen to her valer sighed rubbing the back of his neck he looked away for a moment as if trying to decide what to do Kela could feel her heart racing her stomach twisting with fear she wasn't sure if he was going to help or if he was going to arrest her right there please Kela whispered her voice cracking I'm not asking for much I just want to work
I'll do anything just help me valer looked back at her his eyes softening slightly he was silent for a long moment and the tension between them seemed to stretch forever finally he let out a long breath shaking his head you Shouldn't be out here Kela he said his voice softer now it's it's dangerous people could take advantage of you it's not safe Kela nodded quickly her eyes wide tears threatening to spill I know but I have no choice I need to help my mom please officer valer I'll do anything valer sighed again looking down at
his feet he rubbed his chin thoughtfully then looked back at her all right he said finally I can't promise anything but I'll see if I can help you find something something better than this kela's eyes widened her heart leaping really she asked her voice filled with a mixture of Hope and disbelief Valia nodded slowly though his expression remained serious but listen kid he said pointing a finger at her if I do this you need to promise me you won't come back here this isn't the place for you understand and Kela nodded quickly her heart pounding
With hope she hadn't allowed herself to feel in a long time I promise she said her voice trembling I promise officer valer looked at her for another long moment then nodded all right go home for now stay with your mom I'll come by and let you know if I find anything Kela nodded her eyes stinging thank you thank you so much she whispered valir didn't respond he just nodded then turned and walked back to his car Kela watched him leave her heart still Pounding a strange mixture of fear and hope swirling inside her she had
no idea if valer would be able to help but it was something it was more than she'd had this morning Kela picked up her bucket and Rod her hands still shaking slightly she turned and began walking back home her leg feeling lighter now like the weight she had been carrying had lifted just a little she still didn't have the money they needed but maybe just maybe there was a chance Now the walk home felt different today the narrow Alleyways didn't seem as dark the distant voices of people in their houses seemed almost comforting when she
reached the door to her home she paused taking a deep breath before stpp stepping inside her mother was still lying on the mattress her face pale her breathing ragged she looked up when Kela entered her lips curving into a faint smile hey sweetie her mother whispered her voice barely audible did You did you do all right today Kela knelt beside her taking her mother's hand in her own she nodded her eyes stinging with tears she didn't let fall yet mom she said her voice cracking slightly I think I think things might get better her mother
looked at her her eyes tired but hopeful she smiled squeezing Keela's hand weakly you're you're such a good girl she whispered Kela bit her lip her chest aching she leaned down pressing her forehead Against her mother's hand I'm trying mom she whispered I'm trying she stayed like that for a long time holding her mother's hand the weight of everything still heavy but now there was something else too a small spark of hope it wasn't much but it was enough for now Kela woke up to the sound of her mother coughing a deep ragged sound that
made her chest ache just to hear it she quickly got up from where she had been sleeping on the floor and rushed over to her mother's Side her mother lay there curled up under the blanket her face pale and covered in a thin Sheen of sweat the air inside the small room was Heavy almost suffocating mom Kela said kneeling beside her her voice was soft but filled with worry her mother opened her eyes giving Kela a weak smile I'm okay sweetie she whispered though her voice sounded anything but okay it's just a little worse today
Kela could see the truth written On her mother's face she wasn't okay she was far from it and Kela knew that time was running out faster than she had ever imagined she couldn't wait for officer valer forever they needed help now just rest mom Kela said trying to keep her voice steady I'm going to find a way I promise her mother nodded her eyes closing again her breathing still uneven Kela sat there for a moment longer watching her mother she knew she had to do something today had to be different She couldn't come home empty-handed
again Kela grabbed the bucket her hands shaking as she picked up the rod and squeegee she stepped out of the small room and walked through the narrow Alleyways of the favella the Morning Light was just starting to break casting Long Shadows across the cracked pavement she moved moved quickly her heart pounding her thoughts focused entirely on how she could make today different when she reached the Intersection the cars were already lining up at the red light Kela set her bucket down dipping the squeegee into the soapy water she approached the first car a Green Sedan
and tapped gently on the window the driver a young man with a tired expression looked at her and shook his head waving her away Kela forced herself to smile nodding politely as she stepped back she moved to the next car her shoulders heavy her hands cold a woman in a gray car ignored her Completely staring Straight Ahead like Kela wasn't even there Kela took a deep breath trying to keep her Focus she knew she had to make money today no matter what she couldn't afford to fail again she moved to the next car and the
next each rejection making the weight in her chest grow heavier the sun rose higher the heat bearing down on her shoulders kela's hands achd her fingers Roar from the cold water and harsh soap her knees hurt from kneeling to pick up coins that Rolled away and her head throbbed from the noise of the busy street it felt like every part of her was falling apart and she didn't know how much longer she could hold on by midday Kela had only managed to make a a handful of coins she sat on the curb her head hanging
low her eyes stinging with tears she couldn't hold back any longer she needed help but no one seemed willing to give it no one even saw her as anything more than an inconvenience she wiped her eyes quickly Trying to pull herself together but it felt like a losing battle suddenly she heard footsteps approaching and her heart sank she looked up and saw Mr Souza the L Lord he was a tall man his face always Stern his eyes always narrowed like he was looking for trouble Kela quickly stood up grabbing her bucket her heart racing Keela
Mr Souza said his voice rough he looked her up and down his eyes narrowing even more where is the rent Kela swallowed hard Her hands tightening around the handle of the bucket I I'm trying Mis Susan she said her voice barely a whisper I just need a little more time Mr soua shook his head a harsh laugh escaping his lips more time you've had plenty of time he said his voice dripping with impatience I need that money Kela you have one week after that I want you and your mother out no more excuses Kela felt
her stomach drop her heart pounding so hard it hurt please Please Mr soua she begged her voice cracking my mom she's sick I just need a little longer I'll get the money I promise Mr soua looked at her his eyes cold and unmoved one week he said firmly and if you're not out I'll make sure you're gone understand Kela nodded tears burning her eyes yes sir she whispered Mr Souza turned and walked away without another the word leaving Kela standing there her chest feeling like it was about to burst she wiped her Eyes trying to
pull herself together but the fear was overwhelming she had one week and she had no idea how she would make enough money in that time she turned back to the street picking up her squeegee again she had to keep going she had to find a way she moved to another car her hands shaking as she knocked on the window the driver a man in his 50s glanced at her then waved her off without a word Keela nodded stepping back her heart sinking lower with each Rejection the hours dragged on and Kela felt like she was
suffocating under the weight of everything that was happening her mother was getting worse Mr soua was threatening to kick them out and officer valer was nowhere to be seen the hope she had felt yesterday was fading replaced by a deep gnawing fear Fe as the sun began to set Kela finally picked up her bucket and started the Long Walk Home her body was aching her hands red and swollen her legs weak she Barely had anything to show for the whole day a few coins that wouldn't even cover a loaf of bread she could feel the
tears welling up again and this time she didn't bother trying to stop them when she reached the door she took a deep breath wiping her eyes before stepping inside her mother was still lying on the mattress her breathing shallow and weak she looked up when Kela walked in her lips curving into a small tired smile hey sweetie her mother whispered Did you did you make enough today Kela knelt beside her her throat tight she forced a smile shaking her head not not yet mom she said her voice cracking but I'll keep trying I promise her
mother nodded her eyes closing again her breathing labored you're you're such a good girl she whispered Kela bit her lip her chest aching she leaned down pressing her forehead against her mother's hand I'm sorry Mom she whispered tears spilling down her cheeks I'm so sorry she stayed like that for a long time the weight of everything crushing her she didn't know what else to do where else to turn she felt alone like the whole world was against her like no matter how hard she tried it would never be enough but as she sat there holding
her mother's hand she knew she couldn't give up not yet she had to keep going for her mother's sake she had to find a way Kela woke up before the sun rose her eyes puffy from The tears she'd shed the night before the fear and Desperation was still there heavy as ever but she had made a decision during those sleepless hours she couldn't just keep waiting officer Valia had promised help but what if it never came Kela couldn't afford to sit around hoping for a miracle she needed to take action she needed to find him
face him again and ask for more she looked over at her mother her face barely visible in the dim light her Breathing was shallow her chest rising and falling in slowly Keela leaned over and kissed her mother's forehead brushing a few strands of hair away from her face she grabbed the bucket and Rod and slipped out of the room the early morning chill biting at her skin Kela walked quickly through the mazike alleys of the flla the Shadows long and dark in the early Dawn her heart pounded in her chest but this time it wasn't
because of fear of rejection or even exhaustion it Was because she knew what she had to do and the thought terrified her she was going to find valer and make him help her the intersection was just coming to life when she arrived a few cars rolled past and she scanned the street searching for the police car she knew valer sometimes patrolled this area around the same time if he was here she'd find him minutes stretched into an hour and Kela began to l lose hope she paced the street corner her bucket Sitting untouched finally just
when she was about to give up she saw the blue and white police car turn onto the road its headlights cutting through the dim Morning Light Kela felt her breath catch in her throat the car pulled up to the curb and valer stepped out adjusting his belt his eyes met kelas and his brows furrowed he looked surprised but he kept his face blank you again valer said walking over to her his voice was tired like he had already Had enough of everything before the day even began didn't I tell you not to come back here
Kela took a deep breath trying to steady herself her hands were trembling and she tightened her grip on the bucket handle I know sir she said her voice trembling but loud enough to be heard but I need your help you said you'd help me please I need something anything my mom's not getting better I need to do something valer sighed shaking his head He looked down at her his face softening just a bit I told you kid I was going to try he said but these things take time you can't just there is no more
time kela's voice came out louder than she intended her heart racing she could feel her face flush tears threatening to spill again my mom she's really sick and Mr Souza wants us out he said we have one week to pay the rent or he's going to throw us out I can't wait anymore Val's face tightened his jaw Clenching he looked away rubbing the back of his neck his eyes focused on the cars passing by he stayed silent for a moment and Kela felt her chest tighten her hands trembling more she had put all her hope
In This Moment In This Man and if he said no she didn't know what she'd do finally valer sighed looking back at her all right he said his voice softer now come with me I know a guy who might be able to help but you have to promise me Kela that you'll stop coming here This place isn't safe understand Keela's eyes widened and she nodded quickly her heart lifting with a sudden Fierce hope I promise she said her voice cracking slightly valer nodded gesturing toward his car get in I'll take you there Kela hesitated for
a moment glancing back at her bucket she let out a breath leaving it behind as she followed valer to the car the interior smelled of old leather and the radio Crackled softly with static Kela climbed in her hands still trembling as she fastened the seat belt valer got in beside her starting the engine they drove in Silence the city passing by in a blur of gray and rusted colors kela's heart pounded her eyes darting to Val's face he looked tired his jaw clenched his eyes focused on the road she wondered why he was doing this
he didn't have to help her he could have just kept driving left her there with her bucket And her hopelessness why are you helping me Kela finally asked her voice barely a whisper valer glanced at her his brows furrowed he didn't answer right away just let out a long breath because no one else is going to kid he said finally you remind me of someone I knew someone who didn't get the help they needed I guess I don't want to see that happen again Kela didn't know what to say so She stayed quiet she looked
out the window watching the buildings Blur by for the first time in a long time she felt something other than fear or hopelessness she felt a small spark of hope and she held on to it with everything she had they pulled up in front of a small garage a sign hanging above it that read Carlos's auto shop the building looked old the paint peeling but the place was bustling men were working on cars the sounds of Clanking metal and muffled conversation filling the air valer turned off the engine and looked at Kela stay here for
a second he said let me talk to Carlos Keela nodded her hands gripping her knees as she watched valer step out of the car and walk over to a man in a blue coverall they talked for a while their faces serious valer gesturing back at the car Kela could feel her heart pounding her stomach twisting with Anxiety she tried not to let her hopes get too high she couldn't afford to be disappointed again finally valer waved her over and Kela climbed out of the car her legs feeling shaky she approached them slowly her eyes darting
between valer and Carlos Carlos was a big man his hands covered in grease his face rough but kind you're Keela huh Carlos said his voice deep he looked her up and down then nodded valer here says you need some work we're short a hand around Here and if you're willing to work hard I can use you it won't be easy but it's better than the street corner understand Kela nodded quickly her heart leaping yes sir I'll work hard I promise she said her voice shaking with emotion Carlos gave her a small smile nodding all right
then you can start tomorrow be here early got it yes sir Kela said her eyes shining with unshed tears she looked at valer her heart swelling with gratitude thank you she Whispered valir nodded his face still serious don't thank me yet kid just do your best that's all I ask he said Kela nodded her throat tight she turned back to Carlos her heart pounding for the first time in what felt like forever she felt like she had a chance a real chance to make things better she knew it wouldn't be easy but she was ready
to fight for it she would do whatever it took the sun had barely risen when Kela arrived at Carlos's auto shop the next Morning she stood outside the metal gate her hands clutching the strap of her small backpack tightly the place was already busy and she could hear the clang of tools and the hum of engines Carlos had told her to be there early and she wanted to show him she meant business Kela took a deep breath then pushed the gate open and stepped inside the garage smelled of oil and gasoline a sharp contrast to
The Damp earthiness of the flla men were moving between cars Their hands stained with grease their voices loud she spotted Carlos standing by a beat up sedan talking to one of his workers Carlos looked up when he saw her giving her a small nod you're here he said his voice loud enough to carry over the noise of the shop he waved her over and Kela hurried toward him her heart pounding mour sir she said trying to keep her voice steady even though she was Nervous Carlos gave her a once over then nodded again you came
on time that's good he said he gestured to a stack of old rags and a bucket sitting beside one of the cars today I'm going to have you help with cleaning up around here it's not glamorous but it's where everyone starts Kela nodded quickly I'll do whatever you need sir she said her voice trembling just a bit Carlos gave her a small smile that's the right attitude he said he turned to the man standing Beside IDE him a short broad-shouldered guy with a kind face this here is Julio he'll show you what to do today
Julio nodded at her a friendly smile Crossing his face Hey kid stick with me and you'll be just fine he said his voice warm Kela smiled back feeling a little of her anxiety ease thanks Julio she said Julio led her over to a row of cars waiting to be worked on he handed her a rag pointing at the wheels of a car start here clean off the dirt and make Sure it's all spotless customers don't like seeing their cars come out looking half done he explained Keela nodded kneeling beside the car she dipped the rag
into the bucket the cold water numbing her hands and began to scrub the grime was thick and it took effort to clean but Kela didn't let it bother her she worked methodically making sure she got into every crease wiping off the caked da dirt until the wheel shined not bad Julio said glancing over At her work he gave her an approving nod keep at it Kela kept her head down scrubbing at the wheels then moved on to the windows the sun had climbed higher and the garage was getting warmer the air thick with the smell
of gasoline and sweat kela's hands achd her fingers stiff from the cold water but she didn't stop she had promised herself and her mother that she would make this work by midday Kayla was covered in Grime her Knees sore from kneeling on the concrete floor Julio handed her a bottle of water nodding toward a small bench in the corner take a break he said you've earned it Kayla took the water her fingers aching as she Twisted off the cap she sat on the bench taking small sips her eyes scanning the garage she watched the men
move between the cars their voices blending together in the noisy shop it felt different from the streets where she was constantly looking Over her shoulder waiting for someone to yell at her or chase her away here she felt a strange sense of belonging a sense that she was doing something worthwhile Carlos walked over to her his eyes flicking to the car she had been cleaning he nodded a small smile tugging at his lips you're doing well kid he said keep it up and you might find yourself moving up around here Keela looked up at him
her heart swelling thank you sir I'll work as hard as I can She said Carlos nodded turning back to the other workers we're short on hands and if you keep showing that you're reliable there's plenty more to do around here just keep your head down and don't don't slack off got it yes sir Kela said her voice firm she wiped her forehead the sweat and grime mixing but she didn't mind for the first time she felt like she had a shot at something better after her break Kela got back to work scrubbing the cars cleaning
tools And helping Julio organize the cluttered shelves she watched The Mechanics Work her eyes following their hands as they fixed engines and replaced Parts she wanted to learn she wanted to do more than just clean Julio seemed to notice her interest and as they worked he began explaining things how an engine worked what parts went where Kayla listened intently absorbing every word she didn't understand everything but she wanted to Julio was patient his explanation simple But thorough and Kayla found herself eager to learn more you catch on quick Julio said giving her a smile you
keep working like this and I'll teach you more maybe even let you help out with the real work one day Kaya's eyes widened and she felt a rush of excitement really you do that she asked her voice full of Hope Julio nodded sure but you got to prove you're up for it hard work pays off around here kid just keep at it Kela nodded her heart Pounding with determination I will I promise she said by the time the sun was setting Kela was exhausted her body achd her hands were red and raw but it was
a good kind of tired she felt like she had accomplished something like she had taken a real step forward she waved goodbye to Julio and Carlos thanking them again before heading home the walk back to the flla was long but Kayla didn't mind she was tired but There was a lightness in her step that hadn't been there before she reached her home and opened the door her heart swelling when she saw her mother awake her eyes tired but alert hey sweetie her mother whispered her voice still weak but filled with warmth how was today Kela
knelt beside her taking her mother's hand it was good mom she said her voice trembling Ling with emotion I think I think things might finally be getting better her Mother smiled her eyes shining with tears I knew you'd find a way she whispered her fingers squeezing Keela's hand you're stronger than you know Kela Kela bit her lip her eyes stinging she nodded her heart swelling with determination I'll keep working mom I'll make sure we're okay she said her mother nodded closing her eyes her breathing still labored but a little easier now Kela stayed beside her
watching her mother fall asleep her Heart filled with hope she hadn't allowed herself to feel in so long for the first time Kela felt like she was in control like she could fight for something better she knew it wouldn't be easy but she was ready she had a chance now and she wasn't going to waste it the sun was just peeking Over the Horizon when Kela left her home the next morning bucket long forgotten in the corner of the room today she wasn't heading to the street corner instead she Walked with purpose to Carlos's auto
shop her mother was resting better and Kayla wanted to keep it that way she had something to prove not just to caros or Julio but to herself the streets of the fava were waking up voices called out from doorways the clatter of dishes echoed from open windows and children laughed as they chased each other across the narrow Lanes Kela kept her head down her legs moving with Urgency she reached the auto shop just as the first cars started pulling into the garage Carlos noticed her immediately giving her a nod of approval right on time again
I like it he said his voice booming across the busy garage Kela gave him a small smile her heart swelling with pride morning sir ready to get started she said her voice full of determination Carlos jerked his head toward Julio who was already under the hood of an old car his hands covered in Oil Julio will put you to work again today listen to him and do as you're told you'll be fine caros said before walking away his heavy boots echoing against the concrete floor Kela walked over to Julio who gave her a nod ready
for another long day kid he asked a grin tugging at his lips KLA nodded grabbing a rag from a nearby pile ready as ever Julio she said her voice steady what do you need me to do Julio handed her a wrench gesturing toward a car beside him See this he said pointing under the hood the alternator needs a trusting I'll walk you through it but you're going to do the work time to learn a little something new kela's eyes widened her heart pounding she took the wrench her fingers trembling slightly you mean I'm actually going
to work on the car she asked her voice a mix of disbelief and excitement Julio nodded smiling at her yep but don't get too excited yet you need to do it right or we'll have Problems understand Kaa nodded swallowing hard I'll do my best she said Julio gave her a quick encouraging pat on the back then began explaining what she needed to do Kela listened carefully her eyes following his every movement her mind racing as she tried to absorb all the information she had never worked on a car before never even imagined she would but
here she was with a wrench in her hand standing over an engine she couldn't Mess this up she set to work her hands moving carefully her fingers tight around the wrench as she adjusted the bolts her heart pounding with concentration Julio Stood Beside her guiding her step by step his voice calm and patient she could hear the other men in the garage laughing and shouting but she blocked out everything except Julio's instructions and the task at hand when she finally finished she straightened up her back aching sweat Dripping down her forehead she looked at Julio
her eyes wide did I did I do it right she asked her voice barely above a whisper Julio leaned over the engine inspecting her work he nodded a smile spreading across his face you did good kid real good he said giving her an approving nod Kela felt her heart swell her eyes stinging with emotion she had done it it she had actually done it she felt a rush of pride a feeling she hadn't experienced in so long that it Almost took her breath away thank you Julio Kayla said her voice trembling thank you for teaching
me Julia waved her off grinning you earned it kid you worked hard and you listened you keep this up and you'll be doing a lot more than just cleaning around here he said the rest of the day passed in a blur of hard work and careful instruction Kela cleaned organized tools and helped Julio with small tasks under the hood the hours slipped by and by the time the sun Began to set she was exhausted her hands were sore her arms heavy but it was a good kind of tired the kind that made her feel like
she was accomplishing something Carlos walked over to her at the end of the day giving her a nod you did well today Kela he said you're proving you belong here Kela felt her heart swell her throat tight with emotion thank you sir she said her voice cracking slightly I'll keep working hard Carlos nodded giving her a small smile I Know you will he said before walking away his voice calling out orders to the other men in the garage Kea gathered her things saying goodbye to Julio before starting the Long Walk Home the sun was low
in the sky casting Long Shadows across the narrow streets of the fava Kayla walked quickly her legs aching but she didn't mind there was a new lightness in her step a new sense of purpose when she reached her home she opened the door quietly not wanting to Wake her mother if she was resting her mother looked up her eyes tired but bright she smiled when she saw Kela her lips curving into a gentle smile hey sweetie her mother whispered her voice still weak how was work today Kela knelt beside her taking her mother's hand in
her own she smiled her eyes shining with tears it was good mom she said her voice filled with emotion I'm learning so much I think I think things might actually be Getting better her mother nodded her eyes closing a small smile on her lips I knew you'd find a way Kela she whispered you're stronger than you know Kela squeezed her mother's hand her heart swelling with determination I'm doing this for you Mom she said her voice cracking I'll make things better for us I promise her mother's breathing was still shallow still weak but there was
a Peacefulness to her now that hadn't been there before Kela watched her mother fall asleep her heart filled with with hope it wasn't perfect but it was something she had a job a chance to make things better and she wasn't going to waste it the next day Kela woke up before the sun ready to do it all over again she left her home quietly her heart filled with determination she knew there was still a long road ahead of them but for the First time she felt like she was on the right path she had a
job she had people who believed in her and she had her mother waiting for her at home it wasn't much but it was everything she needed to keep going Kela reached the auto shop just as the sun began to rise the air filled with the familiar sounds of the garage coming to life she smiled as she walked inside ready to face whatever the day had in store for her she knew it Wouldn't be easy but she was ready she had fought too hard to get here and she wasn't going to give up now Kela Woke
Up Before Dawn the air cool in the small room she glanced at her mother whose breathing seemed a bit more even now there was still exhaustion etched on her face but the worst of the wheezing seemed to have passed and that brought some comfort to kela's heart she pulled on her worn shoes grabbed her small backpack and quietly left the house the Streets of the flla were still dark the few lights casting Long Shadows that seemed to dance along the narrow Alleyways Keela moved through them with a sense of purpose today was going to be
another hard day but that didn't bother her she had a job now one that mattered one that helped her mother she reached Carlos's auto shop just as the first rays of the sun were cutting across the Horizon painting the sky in pinks and oranges the shop was Already beginning to stir a few of the men arriving early to start the day Kela gave them a nod grabbing a rag as she walked toward the tool shed Hey kid Julio called out from across the garage waving her over he stood by an old rusty truck the hood
propped open his grin was wide and Kela found herself smiling back morning Julio she said her voice a little horse from the cool morning air got something special for you today Julio said wiping his hands on his Grease stained overalls Carlos said you've been doing well so we're putting you on the real work today how about it Keela's eyes widened and her heart skipped a beat she nodded quickly really I'd love to she said trying to keep the excitement out of her voice but it was impossible she could feel her face flush with anticipation Julio
chuckled handing her a wrench all right right then let's get to it the exhaust system on this old Thing is shot going to show you how to replace it Kea took the wrench her fingers brushing against the cold metal she walked up to the truck peering under the hood the engine was covered in dust and grime and the thought of working on it made her nervous but it also filled her with a strange sense of Pride she had earned this Julio believed in her enough to give her this task and she wasn't about to let
him down the morning passed in a blur of hard work and Concentration Julio talked her through each step showing her how to remove the old parts and put in the new ones kela's hands moved slowly carefully each movement deliberate as she made sure she didn't mess anything up her arms achd from the effort her hands were raw from the constant friction but she didn't stop she could feel herself getting better bit by bit and that gave her the strength to push through the pain by midday she was covered in sweat and Grease her muscles aching
from the effort but the exhaust was in place Julio inspected her work nodding in approval you did good Kayla he said giving her a smile you're getting the hang of this Kayla beamed her heart swelling with pride thank you Julio I wouldn't have been able to do it without without you she said her voice cracking slightly Julio waved her off laughing nah kid You've Got The Knack for it you work hard you pay attention that's what Matters around here he said Kela wiped her forehead with the back of her hand the sweat and grime mixing
together it had been a long time since she felt this kind of satisfaction since she felt like she was capable of doing something meaningful it wasn't just cleaning windows or begging for coins anymore she was part of something bigger now something real hey Kela Carlos called out from across the shop his voice carrying above The clamor of tools and engines Keela looked up her eyes meeting Carlos's he gestured for her to come over and she quickly set down her wrench wiping her hands on a rag as she made her way over to him I need

glanced at the small display of snacks near the register she picked up a chocolate bar Her fingers brushing against the wrapper it had been so long since she had anything like that her mother always loved chocolate Keela placed it on the counter her heart swelling at the thought of seeing her mother smile the man returned with the spark plugs ringing them up along with the chocolate Keela handed over the money taking the change and slipping it into her pocket she grabbed the bag thanking The man before making her way back to the garage when she
