The Clark Update
This is crazy. Well, man, fire Brienne January already. Get her the hell out of here.
Get this chick the hell out of here, man. Who do you think you are? You are nobody arguing with Caitlyn Clark, crashing out on Caitlyn Clark game after game.
Brienne January brutally tries to attack and go off on Caitlyn Clark in the middle of this game versus the Minnesota Links as Caitlyn Clark is carrying this team when Kelsey Mitchell wasn't playing well. a a 29point lead dwindles down to seven and Caitlyn Clark is the one carrying them. And what is Brienne January doing?
Every time we look up is Brian January pointing fingers at Caitlin Clark, disrespecting Caitlyn Clark in front of everybody. In front of everybody. Brienne January and Caitlyn Clark.
We're doing this again. We're doing this again out in public where everybody can see it. back to the Stephen A.
Smith show. Before I get on out of here, um, I had to talk about a story that's very, very important. And albeit indirectly, it involves Caitlyn Clark.
Welcome back to the Clark updates. Today we're talking about Caitlyn Clark, Brienne January, and Steven A. Smith.
After another heated moment involving Clark and January, Steven A. Smith has now reacted, sparking a huge conversation among fans. So, what really happened and what did Steven A.
Smith have to say? Let's get into it. All right.
Brienne January once again found herself in a heated moment with Caitlyn Clark as cameras captured her having an animated exchange with Clark and pointing her finger toward her. The moment quickly sparked another debate among fans about what exactly happened between Caitlyn and January. But that wasn't all.
Steven A. Smith's reaction has also become a major talking point. [music] His strong support for Caitlyn Clark has fans paying close attention to what he had to say about the situation.
So, what really happened during the game? What did January say to Clark? Why did this moment get so much attention?
And what else went down between the Fever and Lynx? Today, we're breaking down the entire story. From the key moments of the game to Caitlyn Clark's incredible performance and the heated exchange everyone is talking about.
We're covering it all. Let's dive in. Caitlyn Clark near triple double.
Kelsey Mitchell keeps the streak alive and hopefully Sophie Cunningham found her shot again. The Indiana Fever defeat the Minnesota Links, the final home game of the year. What happens when a team coming off a frustrating loss suddenly walks into a matchup against the number one team in the league and completely flips the script?
You get a night that Fever fans are going to be talking about for a while because on Tuesday night the Indiana Fever didn't just beat the Minnesota Links, they beat them 96 to 77. And at the center of it all was Caitlyn Clark 27 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, four steals. Clark shot 9418 from the field, 347 from three, and a perfect 646 from the free throw line.
She finished with a team best plus 16 plus minus as Indiana turned what could have been another difficult night into one of its most convincing wins of the season. But there was another story line that immediately started taking over social media. During a fever timeout, cameras caught assistant coach Brienne January having an animated exchange with Clark.
And because this isn't the first time viewers have noticed an intense sideline conversation between the two, the clip quickly started circulating. But here's the important part. What actually happened on that sideline and why did it get people talking so much?
Let's break down the entire night because the final score tells one story. The way Indiana got there tells another. Let's start with the context.
Just two nights earlier, Indiana had suffered a disappointing 93 to 77 loss to the Washington Mystics. That game left plenty of questions. The offense wasn't flowing the way fever fans expected.
Indiana struggled to maintain consistency and suddenly the next opponent was Minnesota, not just another opponent. The Lynx entered the game as the league's top team in the standings and Indiana had to find a response. The answer came immediately.
The Fever opened the game with an incredible offensive burst, scoring 31 points in the first quarter while holding Minnesota to just 16. That's a 15-point advantage after only 10 minutes. [music] And suddenly the entire atmosphere was different.
Indiana wasn't playing cautiously. They were pushing. They were attacking.
They were moving the ball. And Caitlyn Clark was right in the middle of it. The Fever continued that momentum in the second quarter, adding another 26 points while Minnesota scored only 18.
At halftime, Indiana had built a 23-point lead. That's when the game started looking completely different from what many people expected. The easiest way to describe Clark's performance, she didn't have to dominate the game in only one way.
She did it everywhere. 27 points is already impressive. But then you add seven rebounds, nine assists, four steals, and suddenly you're looking at a player who affected almost every part of the game.
Clark wasn't simply hunting shots. She was creating opportunities. She was finding teammates.
She was competing for rebounds and she was active defensively. Her three three-pointers mattered too because when Clark starts hitting from deep, defenses have to make difficult choices. Give her space.
She can shoot. Press up too aggressively. She can attack.
Send help. She can find the open teammate. And that's where the nine assists become especially important.
The Lynx couldn't simply focus on stopping Clark's scoring. They also had to account for what happened when Clark drew attention and Indiana took advantage. Now, here's something that shouldn't get lost in Clark's performance.
Kelsey Mitchell had another major night. She scored 20 points. And that wasn't just another 20point performance.
It extended Mitchell's WNBA record streak to 27 consecutive games with at least 20 points. She reached the milestone with a three-pointer with a little more than 2 minutes remaining. Think about that for a second.
20 points, 20 points, and then 20 points again over and over for 27 consecutive games. That kind of consistency is extraordinary. [music] And it creates a completely different problem for opposing defenses.
If a defense loads up on Caitlyn Clark, Mitchell can punish them. If they stay attached to Mitchell, Clark can create. And when Aaliyah Boston is also producing.
Now Indiana has multiple offensive answers. Boston finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. That trio gave Minnesota a lot to deal with.
Now let's get to the sideline. Because while the scoreboard was telling everyone that Indiana was having an excellent night, another moment was happening away from the action. During a timeout, cameras caught Fever assistant coach Brienne January talking animatedly with Clark.
January pointed in Clark's direction while speaking with her and almost immediately the internet started reacting. Why? Because this wasn't completely unfamiliar.
Back in August, another sideline exchange between January and Clark during Indiana's win over Connecticut also attracted significant attention online. In that earlier incident, Clark and January were seen having a brief but intense conversation during a timeout. So, when another clip appeared Tuesday night, people immediately connected the two moments.
But here's where we have to separate what we know from what people are assuming. We can see the animated conversation. We can see January speaking and gesturing toward Clark.
[music] We can see Clark responding, but we cannot know from a short video exactly what was said or what either person was thinking. And that's important because social media can turn a 10-second sideline clip into an entire story line. Some fans interpreted the exchange as January being overly critical of Clark.
Others saw it as a normal coaching conversation during a competitive game. And there is another important piece of context. January is not just some random figure on the bench.
She was a longtime WNBA player and is now an assistant coach for Indiana. The Fever's official roster lists her as part of Stephanie White's coaching staff. And during her playing career, January was known for her defense, earning multiple alldefensive team selections.
So, defensive communication is a major part of her basketball background. That doesn't tell us exactly what she was saying in this particular moment, but it does give us context for why an assistant coach focused heavily on defense might be vocal during a game. Here's where the story becomes interesting.
If this were the first time anyone had seen January talking intensely to Clark, maybe the reaction wouldn't have been nearly as large. [music] But because there was already a previous viral moment, viewers were watching for another one. And once that happened, the conversation exploded again.
Some social media users criticized January. Others defended the coaching staff and plenty of people simply wanted to know what was actually being said. That's the fascinating thing about sports.
A timeout lasts only a few seconds, but one camera angle can create hours of discussion. And this is especially true with Caitlyn Clark. Every reaction, every exchange, every facial expression, every interaction on the bench, it gets analyzed.
But while people were debating the sideline moment, Clark was doing something much more important. She was playing basketball and she was putting together a huge game. Now, let's give the Lyns credit.
They didn't simply disappear after the first half. Minnesota came out of halftime and responded. [music] The links scored 30 points in the third quarter compared with Indiana's 14.
Suddenly, that massive halftime advantage started shrinking. This was the moment when Indiana could have panicked. A team that had been dominating suddenly watched its lead get reduced.
But Indiana didn't completely unravel, and that mattered. The Fever closed the fourth quarter with a 25-13 advantage, finishing the game strongly. That fourth quarter response may actually be one of the most encouraging parts of the entire night.
Because great teams aren't defined only by how they play when everything is going perfectly. They're also defined by what happens when the opponent makes a run. [music] Minnesota made its run.
Indiana answered. Now, let's address the phrase in the title. Links give up.
That's catchy. It gets attention, but the actual game tells us something more nuanced. Minnesota was outplayed badly in the first half.
Then they came back and won the third quarter by 16 points. That doesn't look like a team simply refusing to compete. The Lynx actually fought their way back into the game temporarily.
The bigger issue was that they couldn't sustain it. Indiana responded in the fourth. So rather than saying Minnesota simply gave up, the more accurate description is that Indiana built a huge early lead, Minnesota mounted a third quarter comeback and Indiana regained control in the fourth.
And there's another factor. Minnesota was without rookie Olivia Miles, who was a late scratch because of a left calf injury. That absence mattered.
Miles had been an important part of Minnesota's season, and removing a key player from the lineup can change rotations, ball movement, and depth. So, there were multiple factors involved in the final result. Let's look at Clark's night one more time.
27 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, four steals, 50% shooting from the field, 42. 9% from three, 100% from the free throw line, [music] and a plus 16 plus minus. That's an incredibly complete stat line.
But perhaps the most interesting number, nine assists. Because we've seen Clark have huge scoring games before. We've seen her score 30 plus.
We've seen her knock down deep threes. We've seen her create highlight reel passes. But when the scoring and playmaking are both working at the same time, that's when she becomes particularly difficult to defend.
[music] And that's exactly what happened against Minnesota. Watch the possessions. Clark doesn't always have to be the person taking the final shot.
Sometimes her impact happens one or two passes before the basket. She draws attention. [music] The defense shifts.
She finds the next player. That player attacks the gap and suddenly the defense is scrambling. That's why assists don't always tell the entire story.
A point guard can influence an offense without recording an assist on every possession. And against Minnesota, Clark was constantly involved. Indiana finished with 96 points, one of its best defensive performances of the season.
The Fever also generated 21 points off turnovers, while Minnesota had only nine. That's another major difference. Indiana wasn't just scoring in the half court.
They were turning defensive opportunities into offense, and that helped create separation. Another name that deserves attention, Sophie Cunningham. She finished with 11 points, including three made three-pointers in 29 minutes.
That kind of contribution is exactly what Indiana needs heading toward the postseason. [music] Because when Clark is surrounded by reliable shooters and scorers, the entire offensive structure becomes harder to defend. Cunningham doesn't need 20 shots.
She needs opportunities. And against Minnesota, she made them count. That's probably the biggest takeaway from this game.
Yes, Clark was spectacular. Yes, the 27-7-9 stat line jumps off the screen, but Indiana didn't win by relying on one player. Mitchell scored 20, Boston scored 17, Cunningham scored 11, and the team defended well enough early to build an enormous advantage.
That's much closer to what Fever fans want to see from this group. Because the postseason isn't about one spectacular player doing everything. It's about whether the supporting cast can consistently contribute because this wasn't a random regular season game with nothing at stake.
Indiana is fighting for postseason positioning. The Fever entered the game needing wins to keep their hopes of securing the number four seed and homecourt advantage alive. After the victory, Indiana remained in contention for that position with one regular season game left.
Meanwhile, Minnesota had already secured the number one seed because Golden State lost in overtime to Portland. So, despite losing the game, the Links still had their top playoff position secured. That changes the context.
For Indiana, this was a game with major motivation. For Minnesota, the result didn't change their number one seed situation. And that difference in circumstances is worth remembering when people analyze the result.
And here's where things get really interesting. The Fever and Lynx are scheduled to meet again on Thursday in Minnesota. Yes, again, just days apart.
And now Minnesota has seen exactly what Indiana can do when Clark gets into rhythm. Indiana has seen Minnesota's third quarter response. Both teams have information from this matchup.
So, the next game could have a completely different feel. Will Minnesota adjust? Will Indiana attack the same weaknesses?
Will Clark see even more defensive attention? Will Mitchell continue her incredible scoring streak? And will the fever supporting cast continue to produce?
Those are the questions fans will be watching. And of course, there's still the sideline conversation that's not going away. [music] The internet has already turned it into a major discussion.
But rather than assuming motives, there's a more interesting question. What does a player coach relationship look like when both sides are intensely competitive? January spent 14 years playing professional basketball.
She was a defensive specialist. Now she's an assistant coach. Clark is one of the team's primary stars and one of the league's most scrutinized players.
Those are two strong personalities within a competitive environment. So, disagreement or intense coaching communication isn't automatically evidence of a deeper problem. At the same time, fans are completely entitled to discuss what they see.
The key is remembering that a camera shows the interaction, not necessarily the entire context behind it. And that's why this clip is generating so much debate. Perhaps the biggest statement from Clark wasn't something she said.
It was what she did afterward. She kept playing. She kept creating.
She kept scoring. She kept defending. And by the final buzzer, the stat sheet showed exactly what kind of night she'd had.
27 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, four steals, a 19point fever victory. That's the response. And whatever was said during that timeout, Clark's performance remained the dominant basketball story.
Think about where Indiana was coming into this game. A disappointing loss to Washington. Questions about consistency, questions about rotations, questions about defense, questions about whether the team could respond against a top opponent.
Then Minnesota walks into Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Indiana says, "Watch this. 31 points in the first quarter, 26 in the second. A 23point halftime lead.
Minnesota fights back. Indiana responds. Final score.
Fever 96. Lynx 77. That's not a small response.
That's a statement on the scoreboard, not a prediction, not a guarantee about what happens next. Just one very clear result. On this night, Indiana was the better team.
Clark's performance also continues an impressive stretch of basketball. Just a few days earlier against Toronto, she had recorded 28 points and 14 assists. Then against Washington, she scored 25.
And against Minnesota, 27 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds. That's three very different games. But the common thread is playmaking.
She's finding ways to impact games even when the exact numbers change. That's what makes this stretch especially interesting heading toward the playoffs. Not that the fever have suddenly solved everything.
Not that Minnesota is suddenly in trouble. And definitely not that one sideline conversation proves some larger theory. Instead, look at the basketball.
Indiana showed it can score efficiently. Clark showed she can control a game without needing an enormous scoring total. Mitchell continued her record- setting scoring streak.
Boston contributed on both ends. Cunningham provided shooting and after Minnesota's third quarter comeback, Indiana closed the game strongly. Those are tangible things.
Those are the facts from the floor. And now Indiana gets another opportunity against the same opponent. The most fascinating part of this game might be that there were actually two different stories happening at the same time.
On the court, Caitlyn Clark was putting together one of her most complete performances of the season. Off to the side, a short conversation with Brienne January became a social media storyline all by itself. One story is supported by a box score.
The other is largely being interpreted from a short video, [music] and that's an important distinction because when Caitlyn Clark is involved, every little moment can become a headline. But on this particular night, the biggest headline was simple. Indiana fever 96, Minnesota links 77.
Caitlyn Clark 27 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, four steals. Kelsey Mitchell 20 points and another record extended. Aaliyah Boston [music] 17 points and seven rebounds.
And Indiana, they responded after a difficult loss by taking down the team sitting at the top of the league standings. The Lynx may have secured the number one seed, but the Fever secured something else on Tuesday night. Momentum.
And now with another matchup against Minnesota coming Thursday, the question isn't whether this game mattered. It clearly did. The question is, can Indiana do it again?
Because after a performance like this, everybody is going to be watching. And if Caitlyn Clark gets another game like this one, the conversation could get even louder. Let me know what you think.
Was Caitlyn Clark's 27-7-9 performance the biggest story of the night? Or did the Brienne January sideline exchange steal the spotlight? And that's the latest on Caitlyn Clark, Brienne January, and Steven A.
Smith. [music] What do you think about the heated moment and Stephen A. Smith's reaction?
