You know, I I say we were talking about the trans issue before and the New York Times really has come over on that to the sort of the sensible liberal, not crazy woke position. I think this is great first step toward getting the Democrats back to sanity. And a second good step would be we got to do something about the view.
And just like that, Bill Maher said the quiet part out loud. This wasn't a conservative shooting across the aisle. It was a liberal telling his own side, "Guys, this has gone off the rails.
" His complaint isn't that Whoopi Goldberg has opinions. It's that five people can deliver one approved conclusion and still call it a debate. Hit like, subscribe, and stay with me because Mah doesn't just roast the view.
He exposes the worldview underneath it. It's huge in Iran, though. Bill, you know, I when I watching the view in a random head cover, you can't even tell which one is which.
The punch line is brutal, but the target is conformity. Different personalities, different chairs, different outfits, and somehow the same conclusion arrives on schedule. A panel only works when somebody is willing to ruin the group chat.
Otherwise, it isn't a discussion. It's a press release with coffee mugs. Mar's point is that the show's celebrated diversity often disappears the moment a genuinely different argument reaches the table.
My district, my district in the great state of Texas is actually a white majority district that President Trump would have won by 25 points. As I said, I'm a direct descendant of a slave. My great great-grandfather was born on Roseown Plantation.
I am literally being judged not by the color of my skin, but by the content of my character. That's the progress because like a lot of white people had to vote for me. a lot.
Congressman Wesley Hunt is making an argument no slogan can easily dismiss. His family history contains the horror of slavery. While his political career contains evidence of dramatic change, both realities can exist together.
Progress doesn't require pretending the past was fine and acknowledging injustice doesn't require pretending nothing improved. Hunt's story says America has scars. America has failures and America can still move forward.
That's stronger than permanent national despair. The Iranian regime is the same day in 2025 is nothing compared to the United States. Keep hanging black people.
It is not even the same. I couldn't step foot. Wait, that's not what you mean to say.
It is the same. No, it's not. The year 2025 the United States is nothing like if I step foot wearing this outfit until I've been killed for I can't have my hair showing.
I can't wear a skirt. I can't have my own. I'm telling you that's why I am saying that it is the same.
Murdering someone for their difference is not good. Whoever does very different to live in the United States in 2025 than it is to live in Iraq. Not for everybody.
Not if you're black. Nobody wants to diminish the very real problems we have in this country. That is no one's intent.
But I think it's important we remember there are places much darker than this country and people who deserve right. Everybody feels that way. They don't have free and fair elections in Iran.
It's not even the same universe. They can't go out of their house. And there it is.
The comparison that collapses under inspection. Saying two countries both contain injustice does not make life inside them equivalent. A pothole and a sinkhole are both holes in the road.
You still know which one swallows the car. You can confront racism in America without erasing the difference between an imperfect democracy and a theocratic state. Precision would make Whoopi's argument stronger.
Instead, she reaches for the biggest comparison because it produces the biggest emotional reaction. Emotional volume, however, is not accuracy. We're having to re-educate people.
We're having to re-educate people about how women want to be talked about, how black people want to be talked about, how Hispanic people want to be talked about. And yeah, it's a little bit tough. Native Americans, the Asian folks.
I mean, these are all things that we I thought we all worked together and got everybody to the point where here's what you can't say. And just so you know, Bill, the Lift Every Voice has always been considered the black national anthem. It's always been that because the separation of the anthems has been so clear to us.
Now, maybe other people don't feel like that, but I feel like, you know, we have to re-educate and retell people. Listen to the word doing all the work. Re-educate, not convince, not debate, not explain, re-educate.
That turns disagreement into a defect inside the audience. The conclusion is treated as settled, and anyone resisting it simply needs correction. That may feel satisfying in a studio where everyone nods together, but it is political poison outside the bubble.
People don't enjoy being treated like students who failed a morality test they never agreed to take. The program The View last week devoted a lot of time to this while somehow avoiding what I actually said. It seemed to be a lot about a need to school me on the black national anthem itself.
Whoopi Goldberg said we need two anthems because quote we're having to re-educate people because ne nothing ever goes wrong when you start talking about re-education. Just ask Chairman Mao. Maybe we can set up some sort of camp.
Mar's joke is deliberately extreme, but the point is simple. Language matters when one group appoints itself the enlightened teacher and casts everybody else as a problem to be fixed. Notice the delivery.
No screaming, no desk pounding. He lets the word hang for one extra beat, then drops the punchline. That calm makes the criticism sharper.
He isn't begging the audience to feel outraged. He's asking them to notice what was already said. But I have to say that given the bigger picture of what Donald Trump represents, it is not so comfortable for me because not only does he now threaten how things are going to be done with kids of color, with women's rights, with my right to decide what is right for my body, not what somebody else says what is right.
That was somebody I and and Not not just my rights about my body, but you know, my friend's children are afraid because this fool has said, and I know he's the president, but for me, when you scare children by saying you're not going to let them stay in the country, you're going to separate them out. Children don't know what you're talking about. They hear these things and it's crazy.
And this is a bigger picture. This is bigger than him. This re this ripples out in so many different affects gay folks, gay marriage, transgender people.
This has huge effects. This is Whoopi's signature move. Stack several complicated policy fights together, place frightened children at the center, and make disagreement sound like cruelty.
It's powerful television because nobody wants to argue against scared kids. But the framing buries every practical question. What policy is being discussed?
Who does it apply to? What legal standard is at issue? What trade-off is being made?
The details vanish, leaving only two roles: protector or monster. That wins applause, but it guarantees nobody outside the room feels heard. But I am what you might call an old school liberal who was brought up with the crazy idea that segregating by race is bad.
That's what I was talking about. And and again, when it comes to an anthem, it doesn't have to be the one we currently use, but it has to be just one, you know, cuz it's a national anthem. And symbols of unity matter.
And purposefully fragmenting things by race reinforces a terrible message that we are two nations. hopelessly drifting apart from each other. That's not where we were even 10 years ago.
And it's not where we should be now. Where we should be now is here. There is not a black America and a white America and Latino America and Asian America.
There's the United States of America. That is the center of Mars argument. A national symbol should be shared.
Not because everyone lived the same experience, but because a country needs a few things that belong to everyone. The irony is sharp. Mah gets cast as reactionary for repeating the civil rights ideal of one citizenship across racial lines.
While the supposedly modern position keeps dividing people into smaller identity camps. Recognizing cultural differences is healthy. Turning every difference into a separate political nation is not.
Diversity needs common ground or it becomes permanent separation. So wait, are you So I don't even ever want to hear Whoopy Goldberg's conversation about how it's worse to be black in America right now. That's that's a bit far.
And my father, who's 75 years old, he was a man that was in the French Quarters that had to go um get a sandwich to the back door of the building. And his son is now a United States congressman in a white majority district in Texas as a Republican. That is America.
That's America. That doesn't erase what Hunt's father endured. It proves why the timeline matters.
One generation goes to the back door, the next goes to Capitol Hill. That isn't evidence of perfection. It is evidence of correction.
Any political story that survives only by denying visible improvement will eventually lose people who can see that improvement in their own families. Hope isn't historical amnesia. Sometimes it is simply measuring the distance already traveled and refusing to stop.
Because the basic problem we have in America is conservatives think the liberals are insane. And they're not completely wrong. Now, I don't think most liberals are insane, but neither do they make it clear they disapprove of the ones who are.
And their cowardice in not marginalizing their own crazies has been their downfall. I couldn't get Neil Degrasse Tyson, a genius scientist and preeminent scientific voice in the media to agree that it was ridiculous for Scientific American and The Atlantic to be claiming that separating sports by sex doesn't make sense. Yes, it does.
Actually, it makes perfect sense and it's obvious that it does. And there's a lot of stuff like that on the left. And conser when conservatives see it, they say, "I'm sorry, we're just not going to go along with reinventing society.
" This is the thesis. Mah isn't claiming every liberal believes the most extreme idea online. He's saying mainstream liberals often refuse to challenge those ideas because they fear punishment from their own coalition.
Voters notice that silence. When a bizarre claim appears and every prominent figure studies the ceiling, the public assumes it was accepted. Politics isn't only what you privately believe.
It is what you will publicly reject. Conservatives have their own versions of this cowardice. Absolutely.
But Mah is addressing his own side and self-criticism matters because it costs something. As it's kind of late in the fourth quarter for America, we're behind by three touchdowns. Uh let's make one last stab at a grand bargain between the two sides that hate each other so much.
America used to do this all the time, make bargains, and I've suggested many myself, like, "You stop saying fetuses are the same as babies, and we'll stop saying trans women are the same as biological women. You stop saying alternative facts, and we'll stop saying my truth. You stop saying thoughts and prayers and we'll stop with the land acknowledgements.
You admit there's no such thing as voter fraud and we'll admit that getting a picture ID isn't really that hard to do. Stuff like that. But as it is so late in the game, let's just go right to the granddaddy of bargains now.
The left will seriously quash all their looney woke and the right will stop the slide into autocracy. That's really the only card left to play. That is a compromise proposal.
Not because every example is balanced, but because Maher demands concessions. Most compromise today means you abandon your position while I keep mine. Mah proposes a mutual cleanup.
The left stops pretending language can rewrite every material distinction. The right stops pretending institutions matter only when they produce the desired winner. Both sides surrender a fantasy.
Will it happen? Probably not. Activists gain status and content from keeping the emergency alive.
But the principle holds. A country cannot deescalate when every concession becomes betrayal and every opponent becomes an existential enemy. The left half of the country fears he'll make the anniversary about him.
Of course he will. I even bet that on Khi. The question is whether we all will help him do it.
We shouldn't. This is about America. He isn't America.
He's the temporary caretaker of America. America's employee and the message should be that America isn't actually his and that no one side gets to own being psyched about the country. So I'm not down with this attitude of well we're having a party but if Trump's going I'm not.
That's so high school it should be in the Epstein files. Oh, go to the party. It's a big celebration.
You probably won't run into him. This country's 3. 8 million square miles, and that's without Greenland.
Look, that line matters. The president is not the country. No office holder is.
Patriotism that switches on only when your team wins is fandom with a flag. Maher is telling liberals not to surrender the national story to Donald Trump simply because Trump claims it loudly. The rule works in reverse, too.
America doesn't become perfect when your candidate wins or worthless when that candidate loses. Politicians are temporary. The country is the inheritance.
Abandoning its symbols because you dislike one employee is like abandoning your house because you hate the plumber. Stop saying that Whoopi Goldberg getting yanked from the view right after she attacked me on The View is karma. There's no such thing as karma.
Sorry. Sorry, but life is random. The only word to describe it when a big game hunter gets trampled by an elephant and then eaten by lions is hilarious.
Here, Mar separates criticism from a vendetta. He could celebrate Whoopi's suspension as cosmic revenge. That would be easy, satisfying, and perfect for an outrage thumbnail.
Instead, he says the boring, honest thing. One event following another doesn't prove the first caused the second. He isn't asking for Whoopi to disappear.
He's asking for her arguments to survive scrutiny. There is a huge difference between you should be fired for speaking and you spoke and what you said was wrong. Modern media keeps pretending those are identical.
As Americans understand it is nothing more than an extension of the common logical fallacy called post hawk ergo hawks. which means after that because of that. It's the fallacy that happens when someone assumes that if one thing follows another then the first thing must have caused the second thing.
Like I wore green socks every day last year and I never got into a car accident. Green socks must prevent car accidents. Only Mar could turn a feud with the view into a late night Latin lesson.
But the green socks example exposes the shortcut behind superstition, conspiracies, and half the arguments exploding online before breakfast. We love stories where villains are punished, heroes are rewarded, and the universe keeps receipts. Reality is messier.
Sometimes people we dislike face consequences for unrelated reasons. Sometimes people we admire get lucky. Separating sequence from cause isn't flashy, but it is one of the fastest ways to become harder to manipulate.
Attacks me on a regular basis. She says stupid on a regular basis and just happen to go inside. But that's okay.
She's allowed to be wrong. It's 11:00 a. m.
this when Barbara Walers invented it a long time ago, but it's the view. Well, that's the problem in America. There is one view and clearly true opinion and everybody else can go sit in the corner.
And there's the cleanest line in the takedown. She's allowed to be wrong. Free expression doesn't mean freedom from rebuttal.
Whoopi makes the argument. Mah dismantles it. The audience decides who made more sense.
No boycott, no purity tribunal, no demand that either disappear. Barbara Walters built a show around disagreement. Mars accusation is that the disagreement became theatrical.
Five routes to the same destination. A show called The View can survive a contrarian voice or an uncomfortable fact. What it cannot survive is the audience realizing the debate ended before the cameras turned on.
And that is the larger point. America isn't flawless and criticism isn't betrayal, but criticism becomes empty when it denies progress, collapses every distinction, and treats disagreement as moral failure. Mars argument is not that Whoopi should be silenced.
Let her speak. Let everybody speak. Then answer weak claims with better arguments and enough humor to keep the room awake.
So where do you land? Is Mah defending old school liberalism or has he moved right while the culture moved left? Comment below, hit like if debate beats cancellation, and subscribe for more sharp breakdowns.
A country can survive disagreement. It cannot survive losing the courage to disagree out loud.
