A phone call broke the silence on a quiet night in Buenosiris. On the other end, Tobias Suchelli had a shaky voice as he told his grandmother something that made her shiver. A terrible thing had happened and Emil Aayyala was a part of it.
The old woman ran to the back of the house in a panic, her heart racing. What she saw in that small, dimly lit room was even stranger than she had thought. Something so shocking happened that it would alter everything.
What really happened that night? And why did this scary thing happen? When the answers came out, they would show a dangerous addiction that no one had been able to stop in time.
Amilchia Ayala was born in Azidro Casanova, a town in Buenoseres, Argentina in 2004. The Ayala family, Julia and Sergio, gave her a warm and loving home to grow up in a few years after she was born. Her family got a younger sister and then a younger brother whose name is still unknown.
Even when she was young, Emil stood out because of how sweet and charming she was. Her friends loved her. She was very close to her extended family who thought she was a sweet girl with big dreams.
Emilts went to a high school in her city when she was a teenager. By her fourth year, she had great friends who like the same things she did. She met Luis Tobia Suchelli around this time.
He was four years older than her and in his last year at the same school. Luis was drawn to Emil because she was lively and had pretty features and a small body which made her even more attractive. It didn't take much to get her to partner up with him.
She felt nice that an older student was interested in her, which is exciting for a lot of girls her age. When Emils told her parents about her new boyfriend, they weren't against it. They thought it was normal for teenagers to act that way and thought Luis was nice and well behaved, but not a lot was known about him.
He shared a small room with his grandma in the back of a house that wasn't quite finished. While Luis seemed polite, he really had a dominating and sometimes unstable personality that he was able to hide from adults. Emily began to worry about Louis's behavior after dating him for a little over a year.
Their relationship began to go badly when he became more and more controlling. Luis became demanding and obsessive, making it hard for Amils to enjoy the freedom she used to have. Her friends noticed the change.
Even though she never officially reported any abuse, she was emotionally abused and had mental problems while they were together. Emilchi had had enough by the middle of 2019 when she was only 15 years old. Louise had even gotten into her social media accounts and was talking to other people as her.
This constant invasion of privacy and control got too much to handle. She was ready to be free. So, she told her parents she was stopping the relationship.
They agreed with her choice and only wanted what was best for their daughter. But Luis didn't like being dumped. Instead of accepting it, he came up with a new way to trick Emilchi into living with him.
He wouldn't let go. Even though all she wanted to do was get away, he followed her around, looked at her social media, and hung out outside her house, which made her more and more worried. At school, she was wary of every break because she knew Louise would be watching her.
He would see who she talked to, who she came in with, and where she went. Imils told her mother Julia in the morning of August 29th, 2019 that she had a PE class at 5:30 p. m.
and would be back home to clean up before going out to meet some new people. As the night fell, Emil's younger sister, who was 14 at the time, thought it was strange that she hadn't come back. Julia, on the other hand, thought she had gone straight to her meeting and would be back later.
As the hours went by and Emil still hadn't come home, worry began to grow. The phone then went off. The other person on the line was Louis's grandma, who told Julia to come to her house right away.
Even though she didn't say much, her tone stressed how important it was. Julia and her family rushed to Louis's house, and the 10b block trip seemed to go on forever. They would soon find out something terrible.
The police put together what happened in Emilch's last hours. Luis had talked her into meeting one last time by saying he needed to end things. She agreed because she wanted him to understand that they were no longer together.
friends say she told them about this meeting without realizing the risk that lay ahead. Luis was waiting for her at school and the two of them walked to his grandmother's house where he lived. His room was in the back of the house away from everything else so no one could bother them.
The next thing that happened changed everything for good. Around 8:00 p. m.
, Louise ran out of his house and made a scary phone call to his grandma. She felt chills go down her spine when he told her that he had messed up with MLC. She ran to the back of the house where his room was because she was scared.
What she found was very scary. Emilchi was lying on the floor on a thin cushion and wasn't moving. She was only partly dressed and her face and body were covered in blood.
The old woman was so shocked that she quickly picked up the phone and called 911. An ambulance and police officers quickly arrived at the scene. Her next call was to Emils's parents, telling them they needed to come right away.
Even though she didn't say much, her haste made it clear that something very bad was happening. When Julia and Sergio Ayala got there, they saw bright police lights and a scene they had never seen before. They were right to be scared.
Their daughter had been through a terrible thing. As they tried to understand the terrible news, they learned that the person who did it was on the run. It was around 1000 p.
m. when detectives from the homicide section arrived at the house and saw a horrible crime scene. Emils was badly hurt and detectives carefully gathered evidence while forensic experts got ready to take her body to a morg for an autopsy.
At the same time, police started looking for Luish right away. It wasn't until 1:30 a. m.
On August 30th, they finally found him, lost and confused, walking along a highway. Luis told the truth during his questioning which took place in front of a murder lawyer. He not only admitted to the crime, but he also tried to explain it away by saying that his feelings had made him lose it.
According to what he said, he met Emils at school that day and pretended to want one last talk. She said yes because she thought that would finally help him understand that they were no longer together. They walked to his house together and sat in his quiet room for hours.
Luis begged her to take him back, but she wouldn't give in. After that, she told him she was seeing someone else, which made him very angry. Louise still thought she belonged to him, even though they had broken up a month before she did.
He thought she had lied to him. That, he said, was the last straw. He was furious and told her that she would not be with anyone else if she wasn't with him.
Emils wouldn't be scared, though. She didn't keep quiet like she did before. She didn't back down.
She told him he had no say in her life and that she wanted him to leave for good. That's when Louise lost it. To begin, he hit her several times.
Then he hit her very hard with a wooden stick that was later found at the crime scene and kept as evidence. As soon as she stopped moving, he choked her with his bare hands. Louise changed his clothes, took a shower, and put a blue sheet over Emilch's body when it was over.
After that, he left the house, and began walking without looking back. While Luis was being questioned about his crime, Emilia's family was stuck in a bad dream. Julia afterwards said that the shock was too much to bear.
They couldn't believe what had really happened. It was already terrible for them to lose their daughter. But knowing that her last hours were filled with fear, pain, and helplessness made it even worse.
Julia said in an interview that Louise had been hanging out near their house around 300 p. m. the day before the attack.
She was sure it wasn't a coincidence when she thought about it now. He knew their habits well and probably picked that time because he knew all three of her kids were home by themselves. She was sure that he had meant to hurt a Milch that day.
But since she never left the house, his plan didn't work. Julia also felt bad that she didn't realize how bad her daughter's relationship problems were. She thought Emils and Luis were just two kids going through the ups and downs of young love and that their fights were normal.
She didn't know it at the time, but there had been signs all along. Later, Louisa's grandmother gave the police her statement, but she wasn't called to court to witness. After the crime, no one from Louisa's family ever got in touch with Emils's parents again.
As the investigation went on, the preliminary autopsy reports showed how violent the attack was. The formal cause of death was suffocation, but deep bruises on her neck showed that she had been strangled by hand, which was clearly an act of anger. Since there were no defensive cuts, it looks like she was beaten up before she could fight back.
But her face and head were badly hurt, with most of the damage being to the left side of her neck and face. This made it clear that she had been beaten over and over again. There was proof of a planned violent attack.
Argentina was filled with anger when the results were made public. The case started important conversations about abuse against women which led to protests and calls for action. In Amilch's honor, marches and candlelight vigils were held by women's rights groups which were already at the head of the fight against femicide.
Not just for her, but for all victims of abuse by a partner. They wanted justice. At a Millsa's funeral on August 31st, 2019, everyone in the town said their last goodbyes.
People from her family, neighborhood, and friends got together to remember her and demand change. They asked people to know how to spot violent relationships and keep young women from going through the same thing. Sergio Ayala had been emotionally distraught for days and had not said a word.
Eventually, he spoke to the press and demanded that justice be done. It was impossible for him to understand how someone could hear about Emilch's pain and not feel sick. He talked about how painful it was to lose a daughter who was kind, smart, and full of dreams.
There was a huge hole in their lives without her. But the fight for justice had just started. Sergio Ayala thought Luis was a polite and respectful young man when they first met.
But as time went on, both he and Julia started to notice behaviors and attitudes that were troubling. They told Emilchi that Luish wasn't the right guy for her. Later, Serio told her through tears that he felt foolish at first because he thought their problems were normal teenage ones.
He had to painfully admit that he would have reported Luis to the police right away if he had known the truth. Sergio told Luis that he had physically removed him from their home more than once, pushing him out in anger. This was a very emotional admission.
Still, it wasn't enough. Luis kept looking for Amilchi over and over again. As the months went by, Luis stayed in jail while the probe went on.
The legal process moved forward, making sure that all the proof needed for the trial was gathered. The prosecutor in charge gathered evidence and statements that pointed to a pattern of psychological abuse while the case was being looked into. One of the most important things that came out was that Louise had hacked Emilch's social media accounts and was controlling how she talked on them.
Even though no official complaints had ever been made against him, he had sent threatening texts to people she knew. By the beginning of August 2020, Julia was getting more and more angry about the court delays and said that the weight was unbearable. She told Luis he had to take responsibility for the damage he had done to Emils's life and the lives of everyone who loved her.
In answer, the prosecutor said that he had officially asked for the case to go to trial. He told Lua's family that there was a lot of proof against him like his full confession, forensic records, and psychological tests. These tests showed that Luis had a good knowledge of what he did and how it would affect others.
Also, comments from witnesses showed that Luis still wouldn't accept that their relationship was over. Lisha's own explanation of why he did what he did was included in the prosecution's report. He said that his crime was caused by problems in his relationships.
He said that he killed Emilchi with both his hands and a wooden stick. The level of violence in the attack and the fact that he planned his actions made it clear that he knew exactly what he was doing. When Julia found out what the lawyer had done, she told everyone who had helped them through the whole thing that she was very grateful.
11 months after her daughter died, she kept calling for justice and insisted that Louise get the harshest sentence possible, life in jail. After a few months, it was reported that the trial would start in a criminal court on Monday, May 3rd, 2021. Because of the world health crisis, the proceedings would be held in a mix of different styles.
There would be judges and witnesses in the courtroom, but the lawyers and Luis would be watching from afar. Because Luish knew the victim and killed her because of their connection, he was charged with aggravated homicide and femicide, which is violence against women. During the first day of the trial, Luis admitted that he had killed Emilts.
But he tried to downplay the crime by saying that it happened during a heated fight. At the start of the hearing, the judges looked over lab reports and important pieces of evidence. By midday, witness statements had begun and Julia made an emotional statement.
Julia talked about Emil's relationship with Louise in great depth during her testimony. She talked about the unhealthy patterns that had formed over the course of their year together. She also talked about the last few days before the tragedy when Emils had already cut ties with him.
Julia thought about the times. Luis had been to their house twice. He had seemed shy, quiet, and normal, and nothing about him had made me think he was mean.
One memory stood out to Julia. Luis had been to a family meeting for a relative's communion. His insistence that Emil stay by his side and not talk to anyone else during the event was very clear.
When Julia told Louise that she wanted her daughter to make friends and join the party, Louise quickly left, looking upset. When Julia thought about it now, she saw that the control and possessiveness had always been there, but she had missed many other warning signs, but she had no idea that it would get so bad that she couldn't even imagine it. Julia told the judges about the troubling patterns of abuse that had been going on in her daughter Emilsa's life.
She found out about these things by talking to Emil's friends in the days after her death. She talked about how Louise would look through Emil's classroom windows while she was at school, always wanting to know who she was talking to or sitting with. The same thing happened at recess.
He made sure she only spent time with him, leaving her alone with her friends. One of the most disturbing things about Julia's statement was how she said the school didn't do enough to protect her daughter. Emilch and her friends had made a report about Louis's aggressive behavior to the school's administration for help.
But the school didn't do anything about their worries. They said the teens had relationship problems that they had to work out on their own. About 2 months before the attack, there was another scary event.
Emily was at a friend's house for a sleepover when Julia got a strange call from the host's mother. A young man showed up at their door out of the blue and said that Julia had sent him to get her milky. He made it clear that she had to leave right away.
It made Julia feel confused and scared, so she asked to talk to her daughter. Emily told her mother she wanted to stay, but she didn't know what was going on and didn't know why Louise was there. Julia told the host right away that Emilch would be staying at the party and that no one should go outside, not even into the front yard.
Julia saw Louise sitting on the sidewalk across the street when she went to pick up her daughter the next morning. She didn't have any way of knowing if he had stayed there all night waiting. The court then turned its attention to Louise and gave him a chance to speak after Julia finished her evidence.
He did not say anything though because there was so much proof against him, including his own confession. The trial went faster than usual. The defense lawyer tried to get his client released by saying that Luis had been in a state of violent emotion, which meant that his anger had made him unable to think clearly.
While he didn't argue that Luis was completely crazy, he did say that Luis couldn't fully understand how wrong his actions were because he was so angry. The prosecution strongly disagreed with this claim, saying that Luise had shown that he knew exactly what he was doing. The prosecutor made it clear that Lu spoke clearly and logically when he was caught and later confessed, showing no signs of mental illness.
Psychological tests showed that he knew the difference between right and wrong at the time of the crime. Because the attack was so bad and planned, the prosecution asked the court to give the harshest punishment possible, life in jail. The hearing to decide the sentence took place on May 7th, 2021.
When the judges looked at all the proof and testimony, they agreed with the prosecution's request. They all agreed that Luis was guilty of severe murder on two counts because he had a history with the victim and there was violence against women. He got a lifetime in prison.
Julia said that she could only hope that her daughter's punishment would bring her some peace of mind after hearing the decision. Emilchi Ayala's sad case had a huge effect on the community. It led to more in-depth conversations about how important it is to recognize and stop gender-based violence, no matter what age the victim is.
It hurt, but it was important to remember that warning signs should never be ignored, and that helping someone could mean the difference between life and death. That's it for this case, but there are always more mysteries to uncover. If you found this story interesting, don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell icon so you never miss a new case.
