And on that day, Chorão went through a situation that profoundly transformed him. Inspired by this event, he wrote a song that dominated radio stations in Brazil. The most incredible thing is that the verses he wrote himself could have saved his life, as they saved many people's.
I'm Ingrid, and today I'm going to reveal the story behind “Só Os Loucos Sabem” by Charlie Brown Jr, here on the DecifraHITS channel. To better understand the feeling that Chorão wanted to convey in the lyrics of this song, we need to know what the band's scenario was at that moment. “Só os Loucos Sabem” is part of a very symbolic record for Charlie Brown.
"Camisa 10 Joga Bola Até Na Chuva", from 2009, was the band's last studio album before the singer's death. At the time, Chorão said that this was a more objective album and that it demonstrated the maturity reached by the band from Santos after so much time on the road. And it was precisely from this thought that the name of the CD came.
According to the book written by the singer's wife, Chorão saw a report of Pelé in a magazine, which had a photo of the star playing soccer under a heavy rain. He ripped that page out and put it on the bulletin board at home, in front of his desk. This image, which for him represented strength and determination, was what inspired the name of the album.
The title fit like a glove, as it was the band's 10th studio album, and symbolized the more than 10-year career that taught them to deal with the ups and downs they encountered along the way. And much of the album's success was thanks to two iconic songs: "Me Encontra" and “Só os Loucos Sabem”, which was inspired by two situations that profoundly affected Chorão's life. The most recent one happened in 2009, when Charlie Brown went to perform in Aracajú.
Arriving there, a girl appeared with a leaflet in her hand and handed it to him. On paper there was a tribute to her brother who had just passed away. She said that the boy was a Charlie Brown fanatic and that he had been to some of their shows.
On the back of that flyer were the lyrics to "Lugar ao Sol," the Charlie Brown song he loved the most. Chorão, still shaken by the girl's story, went to the hotel with that paper in his hand and then an excerpt from “Só Os Loucos Sabem” began to be born in his mind. We always grew up with this whole "you can't do it" type of mentality And this creates a fear within us that and that's what I say in the song "the fear blinds our dreams" it blinds our dreams, and with so much fear of not making it we don't even try to do it "Fear blinds our dreams, fear blinds our dreams" and this boy, did he resolve all his life?
did he have dreams to accomplish? did he go after them? and I asked this to the girl at the time and she said "he was happy when he died" "because his dream was to buy his motorcycle" "and he bought the motorcycle that was his dream" "he accomplished his dream, but then he passed away with it" "You are missed" But most of the lyrics came in 2007, when Chorão went through a profound experience in a church called Bola de Neve, in São Paulo.
One of the followers of that church was Glauco Veloso, a longtime friend of the singer. They had met in their youth, when they were participating in a skateboarding championship in the interior of São Paulo. Chorão and Glauco became very close at that time, so much so that on Charlie Brown's debut album, his name is mentioned "My friend Tron, my friend Glaucon, Ibiraboys, São Bernardon" Turns out Glaucon wasn't a very quiet person.
He himself claims that he was always getting into trouble and was even arrested, an occasion that Chorão helped by paying the lawyers who managed to free him. But after a while, Glauco ended up completely changing his life when he joined the church. Since then, the two haven't seen each other as often.
But when they spoke, Chorão was impressed by the radical change in a guy who was always picking fights, and who was now preaching peace. In fact, that's where the verse came from: "A man who is at peace doesn't want war with nobody" Chorão identified with his friend because he didn't have an easy temper either. With a reputation for being a tough guy and a brawler, the singer was the pivot of most of the controversies with the band and disagreements between the group members themselves, resulting in some comings and goings of memorable members, such as the late bassist Champignon.
What few knew is that Chorão's temperament was just the reflection of a guy who lived in deep suffering. According to the testimony of friends and his wife, he felt more and more the weight of responsibilities that accumulated as the band became successful. And despite all that I had already conquered, over time he developed an intense sadness.
Some unexpected events also contributed to intensify this melancholy. One of them was the loss of his father, who was fighting cancer, but ended up leaving in his arms. At the time, Chorão stopped the band's activities, was isolated for days without motivation for anything, and even thought about breaking up with Charlie Brown.
After a few months he even managed to get back into action, but it seems he never got over the loss of the father he so admired and tried to make proud. Therefore, that tough shell just hid an extremely generous and sensitive guy, which is more than visible in Charlie Brown's compositions. And it was with this sensitivity that he found comfort in Glauco's words, showing himself to be very interested in understanding how his friend had changed so much, and in listening to what he had to say about his experience with God.
Then one day I went to meet Chorão. Then I started exchanging ideas about the more. .
. Not about earth stuff, you know? It was heaven stuff I started talking and he.
. . He didn't blink, you know?
He was just paying attention, thirsty: "What's this? I want more, let's talk. .
. " In one of these conversations, Glauco and another friend named Tarobinha ended up inviting Chorão to go to an event at the Bola de Neve church, where it was also going to take place the CD recording by another great partner from their old days, Rodolfo Abrantes, former member of Raimundos Rodolfo also decided to give up a life of self-destruction to convert to the church, right at the height of his success in 2001. So Chorão was happy with the possibility of meeting the friend he hadn't seen for a long time, and he ended up accepting the invitation.
I share several friends from this church, Rodolfo, Glauco, the pastor here, Tarobinha, in short, several surfers. . .
And I came here today to feel a little of that energy, of that harmony anyway, it was really cool. I felt really good here. Congratulations everyone the Bola de Neve people, Rodolfo, everyone who recorded their DVD here today It was nice to participate.
In fact, I didn't even participate, I came to honor and I really felt embraced. Very good energy, thanks, I recommend it The problem is that the place was very crowded and people started to recognize Chorão even in that crowd. But this time the singer was not present as the leader of Charlie Brown, he wanted to be just one more among the people.
Glauco, who knew his friend very well, took him to a more private place, where he could watch everything in peace. Both Chorão's wife and friends reported that he was very attentive to everything that was happening, reflecting on the messages he heard and allowing himself to be taken over by the energy that emanated from that place. And it was from this experience that these lines were born: "I held back my tears, because I didn't want to show emotion" "Since I was there just to observe and learn a little more about perception" When the event ended, Chorão went to dinner with Glauco and his wife, and right there at the restaurant table he took the napkin and began to write down what he had just witnessed.
A while later, Chorão showed up with a demo CD and handed it to Glauco saying that he had made a song thinking about him and all that. And so, after Chorão and guitarist Thiago Castanho made some adjustments to the lyrics and melody, the song "Só Os Loucos Sabem" was born "For those with a strong thought, 'impossible' is nothing but a matter of opinion" "and that's what crazy people know" “Só Os Loucos Sabem” entered Rolling Stone magazine's list as one of the most remarkable Brazilian songs of the century and the album earned another Latin Grammy for Charlie Brown for best Rock album in 2010. But it seems that none of these achievements were enough.
to pull Chorão out of the hole his anguish had put him in. In the early hours of March 6, 2013, the singer was found dead in his apartment in São Paulo, leaving Brazilian music with a huge void that lasts until today. According to Chorão's wife, he was not a religious guy, but he believed in God and it was in his faith that he sought answers.
In addition to Glauco, the testimonies of Rodolfo and the apostle Rina who were also present that day are in the sense that Chorão was really witnessing that event intensely and affirm that he always had a very great thirst for the teachings of God and for understanding how friends radically changed their lives. They even believe that he would probably convert to the church at some point in his life. So he had a very big impact on this preaching.
I made the call. I asked who wanted to accept Jesus, he stood up, he raised his hand, he prayed, he was moved, he was touched. What unfortunately did not happen was the time and opportunity necessary for him to be discipled, to take root.
But I am convinced that he had a real and living experience with Jesus there. The problem is that the Charlie Brown Jr band had become the basis not only of Chorão's life, but of many people who depended on his work, from band members and employees, to friends and especially family. For him, converting would mean abandoning his band and his career, and therefore, he decided to carry the weight of all his responsibilities, anguish and sadness within himself Chorão was like a loaded truck with a lot of problems that he was carrying, from several people.
And in this truck full of problems, I don't know if there was room for his own . . .
Whether you believe in religion or not, the fact is that like Rodolfo, Glauco, and many others, Chorão could have found a way out of his afflictions in a healthy way. And in the lyrics he wrote, there are words that he himself needed to hear. After all, Alexandre Magno Abrão was such an incredible human being, that his verses comfort, calm and cheer the hearts of thousands of his dear fans to this day.
