Hello my loved yoga family. Namaste and welcome to basic learning course followed by leadership training program. My name is Madanqatara and I'm going to lead you through each and every lesson and we'll teach you some theoretical scientific aspect of laughter yoga and min is going to do some practical laughter yoga exercises in every lesson.
So why we are here? What is the purpose of this course? I think the most important purpose is how can we bring more laughter in our life.
I know that you must be laughing a lot. But we need to laugh more than ever before. Mostly we look for a reason to laugh, something funny, something amusing, comedy, jokes, but sadly we don't have many reasons which really makes us laugh.
And to get the scientifically proven benefits, laughter has to be little extended longer laughter, sustained laughter practice. And that's why we created laughter yoga as a form of exercise. So by practicing laughter yoga exercises, you will actually train your muscles.
You will program your mind and you will start laughing more and more even at small small things. So second is that after learning these laughter exercises, you'll be able to laugh all by yourself at home. It's called solo laughter practice.
So like we do yoga, like we do other exercises, we can also just laugh. [Laughter] So we going to train our body, we're going to train our mind just to laugh on purpose. Laugh voluntarily as a form of exercise.
And then after you learn this art of laughing for no reason, then we share it with our friends and family. And it's lot of fun. And laughter yoga is becoming more and more popular all over the world and it is actually giving so many benefits which I I'm going to explain to you little bit later.
Laughing is also a kind of breathing exercise. When you're laughing you are exercising your lungs. That combined with deep diaphragmatic breathing and laughter.
This is what laughter yoga is. is going to increase your breathing capacity and what it does it will increase the amount of oxygen to your body and brain and that's where it gives you health benefits. So oxygen is the basis of each and every cell metabolism.
All the enzymes, all the you know metabolic processes they depend on oxygen and your well-being, your how healthy you are also depends upon the oxygen level in the cells and what are the primary organs for breathing giving you oxygen our lungs. So we exercise we have so many types of exercises we do but I think breathing exercise is very very important to supply oxygen and we also found that laughter will help you to make your immune system stronger. So it's very good to keep your health st your immune system strong means you're healthy.
you don't fall sick easily and it will help you to you know recover from any kind of chronic illness you have already doesn't matter you laugh and you heal from within and I'm going to explain all those benefits one by one uh before I talk about laughter yoga I would like to share one [Music] video. One day inspiration became for me like a divine language. [Applause] [Music] At first we were five of us.
Now there are hundreds of laughing clubs all over India and the world. [Laughter] I'm struck by how laughter connects you with people. Very good.
Very good. Y What's so funny that has grown adults rolling on the floor? Every morning on Lagona Beach, California, you'll find a group gathered on the sand laughing.
I'm not perfect. [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Laughter] Now they say laughter is the best medicine. [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] Hallelujah.
[Applause] These people didn't think they had a lot to joke about. They're fighting cancer along with traditional therapies. This is offered as part of their treatment.
It's called laughter yoga. [Laughter] foreign [Music] la. Yeah.
[Music] Heat. [Applause] Heat. [Applause] Heat.
Heat. [Laughter] Laughter really is the best medicine. Very good.
Yay. [Music] The largest laughter yoga lesson. Ready?
[Music] [Applause] [Music] You saw how widespread is love to yoga. How many applications? So I think you have a job to do now.
So before we make everybody laugh around us, we can teach laughter yoga to other people. You know it it should start from you. So first let us bring more laughter in our own life and then extend it to other people around us.
So in the basic learning course six lessons it's to understand the concept of laughter yoga. What is it and how does it work and how can I get involved in laughter yoga and how you will learn some laughter exercises some breathing techniques for your health and well-being and then second six lessons the combo course you have signed up is for those who want to teach laughter yoga to other people take some laughter yoga classes uh and teach laughter yoga uh in different applications. So friends, let me share my powerpoints about our objectives why we need to laugh more today.

So just to repeat uh main objective of this coaching is to bring more laughter into your own life through the daily practice of laughter yoga and get many physical, mental, emotional benefits of laughter. They're all scientifically proven benefits. And by learning these techniques, you'll be able to laugh alone at home and share your laughter with your family and your friends.
And final objective is to take laughter along with you wherever you go. So you should not be doing sitting at home and doing haha. No, it has to you have to live laughter in daily life whether it's a good times or hard time.
How can you keep your spirits high when there is nothing to laugh about? So all these techniques you will learn step by step. Five reasons why we need to laugh more today friends.
Stress number one killer and more than 70 to 80% of the illnesses are due to stress and there are so many methods available for stress reduction but laughter yoga is the quickest fastest way and it's less time consuming and you get the benefits immediately cost effective You don't have to spend any money to laugh. Quickest way uh that's why we call it instant yoga. Instant yoga is you laugh and you will get feel the benefits from the very first session.
Moment you start laughing immediate. So when we talk about stress, there are three types of stress. physical stress, mental stress and emotional stress.
And laughter yoga is one exercise that can take care of all the three types physical, mental and emotional stresses at the same time. You release you get benefits from all the types of stress. Friends, after stress, depression is number one sickness in the world.
It's a powerful tool for positive mental health. Laughter can change your mood within minutes and keep you mind keep your mind positive all throughout the day by releasing different happy chemicals. Not only endorphins, you get dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, all the four happy chemicals released as a result of even doing laughter as an exercise.
And you will agree with me if your mood is good you do everything well. Now according to WH 300 million perhaps more than 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Suicides are on the rise and the reason for depression is loneliness.
No one to talk to, nobody want to express your feelings and emotions. Everybody's so busy. Nobody has time.
So that's why we need more laughter to yoga. Laughter to yoga is a powerful antidote for depression. You may have noticed that depressed people never laugh.
But if you keep doing laughter yoga exercises, you are less likely to be depressed. The main hormone for preventing from depression is serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good hormone, anti-depressant neurochemical release from your brain cells and along with serotonin, laughter also releases endorphins, dopamine.
So all these happy chemicals will keep you keep you away from depression. Reason number three why we need to laugh more today. When we were children we laughed 300 to 400 times in a day.
But when we grow up as an adult of 35 we are left with only 10 to 15 times. So where did 385 laugh go? We lose our laughter in the process of growing up.
The primary reason is that when we were children, we did not look for a reason to laugh. We just laughed unconditionally without depending upon any joke, humor and comedies or but when we grow up there are so many external factors start coming into play that if you are happy or not you start laughing more than you are happy and not many people are happy today. So our happiness has become conditional.
That's why we need to do something which makes our laughter and happiness unconditional. And that's what laughter yoga is all about. Reason number four why we should do laughter laugh more especially to do laughter yoga.
Scientific studies have shown that laughter is both preventive and therapeutic. If you laugh every day for 10 to 15 minutes, you will not fall sick easily because it will strengthen your immune system. But uh there is no way to laugh 10 to 15 minutes.
Natural laughter is very short, barely last for a few seconds. So that's not going to give you benefits. So this is where to get all those health benefits we can do it by doing laughter as an exercise.
It reduces stress hormone called cortisols. It lowers your blood pressure, strengthens your immune system and increases the amount of oxygen to your body cells. So friends, if I told you that there is a magic pill available in the pharmacy with all those benefits, you will run and get the supply for the whole year.
But friends, you don't have to go to any pharmacy to get this medicine. This medicine is available under your nose and absolutely free. You can just laugh whenever you want.
Reason number five, modern medicine is expensive and it has so many side effects. But laughter has only one side effect that is peace of mind. Laughter is the cheapest medicine available under your nose.
And this is my favorite quote as a physician. There is not much laughter in medicine but there is lot of medicine in laughter. So friends, now let me explain to you what is laughter yoga.
So let's understand that laughter yoga is not a comedy. This is an exercise program where anyone can learn to laugh for no reason without relying on jokes, sense of humor and comedies. We initiate laughter as an exercise in a group setting and with eye contact and childlike playfulness, it soon turn into real and contagious laughter when it is practiced in a group.
But when you actually practice this laughter exercises on regular basis, you can laugh even all by yourself without even without uh a group. You can laugh alone all by yourself. But you need to program your mind.
You need to learn how to laugh all by yourself without any reason. Why we call it laughter yoga? The yoga element of laughter yoga is a combination of laughter exercises with deep breathing techniques from yoga that brings more oxygen to our body and brain.
Makes us feel more healthy, more energetic. Now this is one of the most important point you must understand that scientific studies show that the body cannot differentiate between real and voluntary laughter. Even your brain cannot differentiate between real and voluntary laughter if it is done with willingness.
One gets the same benefits whether laughter is real or simulated love. Even if you act like a happy person, even if you pretend laughing, you are going to get the same health benefits. In fact, more benefits by doing laughter as an exercise than natural laughter, which I'm going to explain to you little later.
Now, Lafria was started in 1995 in a public park in Mumbai and now it is spread across to more than 120 countries. And there are so many applications of laughter yoga. Look at this picture.
Social laughter clubs, laughter yoga with seniors, laughter yoga with school children, especially physically and mentally challenged people in hospitals, diialysis centers, mental health clinics, cancer centers, companies, corporations, planned schools, prison, police, everywhere. Now you must have seen in the film which I showed you that how far how wide is laughter yoga. So friends enough of introduction now let get let's get back to the business of laughing.
So are you ready? Now first I request all of you to open your cameras. It will help you.
I want to see your lovely faces smiling and laughing. Doesn't matter. Uh so if you are not comfortable with camera, it's okay.
But I request all people who are learning by watching the videos because this time might not be suitable for all people who are attending the live session. So please uh when you watch this video don't just watch laugh along with us so that you get the practice of laughing it's the practical aspect of laughter yoga is more important theory you can read from the internet you can watch videos but there is no substitute for physical act of laughter so you have to laugh along with us so we're going to laugh for no reason at all so laughter yoga is learning the art of laughing without any reason. All right.
So I just I know that you some of you are familiar with laughter yoga but if you are not let's start practicing laughter without any reason. Okay. So please uh unmute and just laugh with me for for for some time without any reason.

[Laughter] [Laughter] [Laughter] Oh, careful. Oh my [Laughter] gosh. So when we finish any exercise, we'll say very good, very good.

Very good. Yay. So friends, it was not bad.
I don't think I need to teach you how to laugh. You are already good laughers. But I think we have something to teach you the technique wise, the knowledge, the understanding, the science behind it.
This is what we're going to explore. So the main stay of laughter yoga is learning the art of laughing for no reason. Laughing as a form of exercise, pretending to laugh.
So as you have uh noticed that our body, our brain cannot distinguish between real laughter and even if you act like a happy person, you are still getting the same health benefits. In fact, you get more benefits by doing laughter as an exercise than natural laughter which I'm going to explain to you further in my second or third lesson. So friends, it was wonderful.
Now uh one of the objective of this course is uh after learning the art of laughing without a reason, make a habit of laughing. So we have to you know reprogram your mind with laughter. And how can we do that?
So we have a a challenge 40-day laughter challenge. So we're going to laugh every day for 40 days. So anything that you repeat over 40 days is going to become a habit.
So Vinak is going to explain to you what is 40-day laughter challenge and how we going to do that. So that's I leave it to Vinak. In each lesson, we are going to teach you five different laughter exercises which are you are going to practice in after every lesson.
Practice those exercises and if possible please uh video record on your selfie camera these exercises and share it with us on the WhatsApp group just to inspire each other. It looks so wonderful and it gives you some confidence that you can laugh without a reason. You can do all these exercises and as I understand that most of you have signed up for a combo course to become a certified laughter yoga leader.
Now to become a leader of laughter to make other people laugh without any reason is not easy. you need to learn the techniques and this is what we are going to give you during this course. So please uh be very efficient with your home practice uh doing this laughter exercises and sharing with us if possible.
But if you're not techsavvy with if you're not using WhatsApp group, it's fine. You can just record the selfie and upload it on your own YouTube channel or if you have any social media platform, you can share your exercises with with other people. When I show [Laughter] up. Why am I laughing? I don't know.
I'm laughing for no reason. [Laughter] Friends, it's been 13 years. I laugh every day without missing a single day.
And life has changed completely. And Probably I am the second most happiest, joyful person on this planet. Ask me who is the first one.
Just now you met him. It's none other than Dr Qataria. Of course, second must be his wife.
Yes, of course. I'm I'm the third happiest joyful person. Yay.
because I laugh every day. This is what I'm going to explain to all of you. Now, he mentioned something about 40-day challenge.
Now, how do we form a habit? I give you classic example of some people develop a habit of drinking coffee in the morning first thing as soon as they wake up they want to have a cup of coffee or tea or even some people want to have a smoke and some people they want to read newspapers without that their day the day does not start. How did they form this habit?
In the initial days, they thought it's fun fun to have a cup of coffee in the morning sitting in the balcony looking at the beautiful view. And they repeated it for about a week or so. And your subconscious mind understood that this is a new conditioning happening in the body and I need to tune into this new habit.
Your your subconscious mind understands everything. Even if you're sleeping, your subconscious mind is awake and it's observing everything. So drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol can be you know easily a habit.
Then why not laughter? I'm uh forgive me if I'm giving only the negative example but there are many positive examples too. People go for running, jogging and people go for cycling, hiking and many other good habits are there out.
So how do they form this? They repeat certain number of days and that becomes part of their subconscious mind. So now for the next 40 days if you wish to make laughter as part of your life you need to laugh for next 40 days.
How are we going to follow this practice or challenge take it as a challenge so that your mind also responds in a positive way. Ah yes I need to achieve this challenge. Right?
So you you can fix up a time or a place where you can sit at your house or wherever you can. It could be a garden or a balcony. Don't worry, you need to spend five minutes a day.
Just I'm asking five minutes. What you need to do? You just close your eyes and start smiling and laughing.
[Laughter] Start enjoying your own laughing sound. In the beginning you may feel it bit awkward but trust me once you start enjoying your own laughing sound you will enjoy it. And in the upcoming lessons we will give you some technique how you can laugh without any support or without any exercise or how you can laugh for no reason involving different activities at home.
Okay. Now to to make it more interesting you need to do one more exercise. So what what is that exercise?
So take your mobile phone and open the camera app and turn the front camera like like this. Right? Like this.
Haha. And now go to video mode and then start record a video of you laughing. I will send an example in the WhatsApp group.

In this group, I just shared a video and in this format if you can share video it will be really interesting and I really appreciate that. So what happens when you share a video? Number one, it motivates others in the group.
We get to see variety of laughing sound, laughing energy. Just imagine the moment you get up and your you're about to do your daily routine and you s incidentally open your mobile phone and you see somebody laughing because we are all on a different time zones, right? when somebody's awake, someone is sleeping, when somebody's getting up, somebody's going to bed.
So we get mix of experiences. So uh another thing sharing the video in the WhatsApp group it makes you uh committed towards the exercise that we are doing. also uh we we actually compare our laughter how my how I was laughing at the beginning of the course and after 12 days how am I laughing so you can actually self evaluation oh I have improved so much yay I'm proud of myself you can actually uh feel happy proud about yourself so friends from today.
Of course, this applies to India and Asian countries participants. Uh people who are US and Canada, you can start from tomorrow. So, please first identify a place where you are not disturbing anybody or nobody is disturbing you.
Any place could be garden, your work workstation or your balcony, your bedroom, living room, anywhere. Just spend five minutes if you are a regular uh morning or evening uh uh walker or jogger while doing that exercise or even after that or before that you can spend five minutes of your time. And am I asking too much five minutes?
This is for yourself I'm asking. So trust me if you can reach all these 40 day like today's day 40/40 tomorrow it will be 39 of 40 and then it is 38/40. So we were counting down.
It's pretty easy. Human psychology understands you know it feels really comfortable when you are counting down. So try to count down from 40 39 38 37 and mark my words if you are able to reach day one and you will be laughing for the rest of your life and I'm the living example.
I did it 13 years ago and nothing or nobody can stop me from laughing. Haha. Even if the hardest situation I kept laughing and and Dr Qataria he's more than 30 years.
So friends uh this is all about 40-day laughing challenge. So, and again, sorry, I forgot to tell you, if you're not comfortable sending the video in the WhatsApp group, no need to worry at all. You just record it, save it in your mobile phone or whatever device you are using for recording purpose.

Friends, before I go to the exercise part, let me answer some of the questions I got in the chat box here. Some people were asking, uh, will you share the slides? Of course, yes, the slides that we use during this course, the PowerPoint presentation, you will receive a link to download all the slides.
It's a Google Drve link. you will receive it and you can download save it. That is number one.
And Dr Qataria did mention about some research and we will include the slides of that research as well. And we have a compilation of all research studies. There are more than 270 research uh uh laughter laughter yoga research across the globe and we will share that link as well.
So it is in different languages different part of the world. You may find it little hard to understand those um uh medical language. You know they use a typical uh scientific language which a common person may not be able to understand.
You try and the the the caption I was mentioning in the beginning of this course. Uh you can select the language my caption language. If you are using a mobile phone you can uh on the toolbar slide towards your left you see CC.
CC means closed captions and click on that you see many options live translation. Turn it on and then you will get an option my caption language. If you click on that, you get list of all world languages.
You can select whichever language you want. If you already know this method, fantastic. You are awesome.
And yes, I about told about the research. Yes, I will share the uh there is a small little manual for this basic learning course. Uh it's a very small pocket book.
We have a PDF. I did send it by email by any reason if you have not received that. I'm going to share the manual in the WhatsApp group.
So please download that. And it it has about 100 pages. Small book.
You can read it in an hour or so. Please do read that. And now somebody says some it my cheek muscles hurt.
Friends there there are minor discomforts. Let me address that before we go to the exercise part. You may feel little bit uneasiness at the back of the head, heaviness.
Okay. And sometimes you may hurt you know slight pain in the cheek muscles, pelvic muscles and you may have experienced some dryness in the throat. These are all common symptom because you have never laughed so much your body is trying to adjust to the new technique that you are introducing to your body.
So it should get settled in in a lesson or two. Maybe from tomorrow a day after tomorrow you'll be all right. You feel better.
So slight headache, cheek pain, slight pain in the abdominal pelvic muscles, sometimes upper back pain, all these are normal symptoms. So you will get over it. Don't worry.
Haha ha yes Juliana I will answer your question in the tomorrow lesson now we are heading to the exercise part I remember your question and I will make sure that I answer friends the first exercise for today's lesson we have already done it is uh laugh for for no reason or fake it until you make it. This is the first theory that Dr Qataria introduced to the laughter club in 1995. So what we do now, we all unmute and let's start faking it like [Laughter] a ha [Laughter] Ready?
Good. [Music] Very good. Friends, I asked you to fake but nobody was faking.
This is the beauty of this group laughter. When we hear somebody laughing or when we see someone laughing, we start laughing and feeling the same emotions. We will explain the the science of mirror neuron theory in the upcoming lessons.
How what is this mirror neuron and how it works and how it helps in laughter yoga. We will explain. So after the first exercise we are going to practice the second one.
It is namaste laughter. Uh in other words you will say greeting laughter. In India we greet by joining hands and this is namaste.
So namaste means you and I we both are one or in other words I bow down to the divinity in you and you reciprocate. So let's do this greeting Indian style namaste laughter. Everybody please join your hands.
Look around. Imagine there are many people around you and you are doing you're greeting all of them. Ready?
One, two, three, [Laughter] go. I could see some people from above. And in the west, people greet each other by shaking hands.
[Laughter] Ready? So this is greeting laughter. And if you know any other type of greeting, for example, in Japan, people put their hands on the knees and they just bend down and greet uh and in uh in in China they they they greet like this something something like this, right?
So if you if you know any other way of greeting oh yes in this country people greet each other like this. So this is a another way of greeting laughter. You can create make a video and send it in the group.
Now the next exercise we are going to practice it's called breathe and laugh. So if you ask me hey win can you please explain in one sentence what is laughter yoga? Yes, I can.
It goes like this. Laughter yoga is nothing but you breathe in and laugh out. This is the shortest definition of laughter yoga.
We breathe in instead of exhalation in the form of exhalation we laugh. So please follow me the following exercise. Please stretch your hands.
Fill your lungs with lot of oxygen. Hold it. Hold it.
Hold it. And bust out [Laughter] laughing. One more time.
Inhale. Hold it. Hold it.
Hold it. See after you inhale why am I asking you to hold holding the inhalation it creates a negative pressure and it can suck all the carbon dioxide from the blood cells and you can expel more carbon dioxide from your lungs. by prolonging your laughter.
All right. So this is breathe and laugh. And the next two exercises are very funny.
The fourth exercise is milkshake laughter. When Dr Qataria started the laughter clubs in Mumbai, India, many people uh suggested him that oh stop laughing. uh it's not a good idea because they were laughing out of jokes and good jokes got over then started coming uh sexy and vulgar jokes and he gave an idea that why don't we laugh as an exercise everybody liked it and this particular exercise it come from uh lassi laughter you know he belongs to north Indian state Punjab And the popular uh drink in Punjab is lassi.
Lassi is yogurt mixed with some sugar and salt or some other spices and drink it. Popularly it's a sweet lassi. They add sugar and make it.
But when laughter yoga went to different countries, people did not understand what was lassi and they created a new variety that is called milkshake. So now all of us are going to have milkshake or it could be any of your favorite drink, latte, whatever, coffee, anything. All right.
So hold two imaginary glasses of your favorite drink. Ready? We are going to mix three times and drink and laugh.
Ready? And [Laughter] [Laughter] Did you like the drink? You want one more?
Yes, of course. Ready? [Music] [Laughter] If you're lactose intolerant, you're allergic to diary product.
But somebody offered you Indian masala chai, then what do you do? You can't drink. So you get allergic reactions.
So what we do? We mix the chai or tea and we throw it and laugh. Ready?
E and but before throwing it make sure the the person is not watching person who has offered you tea. And the last exercise it's called mobile phone laughter. When laughter yoga was started in 1995, the mobile phones were just introduced in India.
Only rich people had mobile phones and the laughter club where it started. This club is the it is a very popular area in Mumbai and all rich people came for morning walk and they used to show off that they got a mobile phone and laughter club members noticed this. Ah this man is showing off.
Oh faking me. And they all decided to do mobile phone laughter. So hold your imaginary mobile phone ready and pretend that you got a call from your dear friend.

Try to record some videos and send it in the WhatsApp group. Let's see you know where different variety of faking laughter faking sound you know there are many laughter sounds right somebody laughs like somebody laughs o different types of sounds are there we get to know variety of laughing sounds and of course greeting laughter if you know any other greeting style send it like that any other exercises so Friends, now let me remind you from today or from tomorrow you are on 40-day laughter challenge. Please try to laugh for 5 minutes every day and if possible just to send a video you can record your selfie video of about 20 30 seconds and do send it in WhatsApp group.
