Across the sands of time, God's people have walked His ancient paths. Join us as we explore divine identity and purpose on Earth, God's word on wealth, discover the blessing passed between family generations, and find life filled with empowering relationships. You will soar like never before.
Welcome to Ancient Paths with Craig Hills. Thanks for joining me again on this broadcast. We're doing the second broadcast in a series on ancient paths and financial principles.
I hope you saw the first broadcast either on television or here on the Internet. We're going to continue in this series, talking about ancient paths, which comes from Jeremiah chapter 6, verse 16, which says, "Stand by the ways and see, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it, and you shall find rest for your souls. " So we are talking about ancient paths.
These are universal principles of life; these are ways of God that God programmed into man when He created man on planet Earth. We have departed farther and farther away from these ancient paths, which has caused life to become more and more complicated and has led to a lot of pain and destruction in families, in people's personal lives, and in many areas of life. So we’re looking at some principles of personal financial management from the Bible, from the Word of God, God's manufacturer's handbook or owner's manual, where we can look and discover what these principles are.
You know, I want to share a basic concept with you. Jesus said in John chapter 4, verses 23 and 24, "The Father is spirit, and those who worship the Father must worship Him in spirit and truth. " Do you know, through this entire series, we're going to endeavor to keep a balance of spirit and truth?
What does that mean? Well, I meditated on that scripture many years ago: "Lord, what do You mean, spirit and truth? " What I discovered is this: We want to walk in faith in every area of our life.
How do we walk in faith? There are two components to it. One is the spirit side, where by faith we reach into the spiritual realm and bring into manifestation that which has been proclaimed and declared from heaven by God, but is not yet manifest on Earth.
That’s the faith principle. On the other hand, the truth side has to do with basic principles. What I’ve discovered is that there are many Christians who feel like they can violate basic principles and then by faith, it’s all going to be okay.
Somehow or another, by that, we’ll just bring in a manifestation of what is necessary by faith, even though the reason they’re in a big mess is that they violated basic life principles. What I’m saying is we need to do both. Let me just give you an airplane example.
Many of us ride on airplanes; I know I do all the time. How would you like to fly with a pilot who is just a spiritual pilot who really doesn’t understand basic principles of aerodynamics but is a man of faith? Suppose you ask him how much the weight-carrying capacity of this airliner is, and he tells you, “Well, you know, I don’t have a specific weight.
What we do is we just sort of put as much weight on it until we feel led by the Spirit to quit, and that’s when we stop. ” Then you ask him, “Well, how fast do you take off? What speed do you lift off at?
” He says, “You know, the co-pilot and I just pray in tongues as we’re going down the runway, and when we feel led by the Spirit to lift off, that’s when we do. ” Then you ask him, “What altitude do you fly this airplane at? ” He says, “Well, you know what we actually do?
There is Exodus; it has about forty-three chapters in it. We usually just let the Bible fall open to one of the chapters in Exodus. So, you know, if it's like chapter 38, we fly at 38,000 feet, and if it's chapter 25, we fly at 25,000.
” Now, how many would like to fly with a pilot like that? I know I wouldn’t. That’s a pilot who understands the spirit side but does not understand the principle or the truth side.
On the other hand, you might have a pilot who understands all the principles about aerodynamics. He’s read the manufacturer’s handbook, and he can tell you exactly how much weight the airplane can hold, what the gross weight is, what the take-off speed is, and what altitude you should fly at. He understands all those things, but he doesn’t hear anything by the Spirit of God.
Do you know what pilot I’d like to fly with? One that understands all the principles and abides by them, and as he’s flying, he can hear the Holy Spirit say to him, “The particular route you’re planning to take is dangerous today; go this other route instead of the one you were planning. ” That’s the pilot I want to fly with—the one that can hear by the Spirit, that walks in the Spirit, that has a relationship with God the Father by the Spirit, and has intimate fellowship and relationship with the Father.
But also, I want the one that understands basic life principles and doesn’t operate by the theory, “Well, I can just violate all those principles, and somehow or another by faith, it’s all going to be okay. ” I want to fly with the pilot who understands and walks in both spirit and truth. So what I'm telling you in this series is… This series, we want to function in both the truth side and the spirit side.
Of course, we're expecting God to do supernatural things. God wants to do supernatural things in your life, and He will. But we also need to understand what our basic principles are.
If I’ve violated them, then I want to repent. I want to ask God to forgive me, and I want to change that. Now, at just the end of the last broadcast, we were looking at the scripture Proverbs 13:22 and talking about the wealth transfer that's coming, and many, many people have heard about that.
I have talked about that. Proverbs 13:22 says, "The wealth of the wicked is stored up for the righteous. " So, I wanted to know: who are the wicked, and who are the righteous regarding money?
What does the Bible say, not regarding my righteousness in Christ before God, but regarding the righteous handling of money? So, I plugged those two into my computer, and the very first scripture that came up was Psalm 37:21. So, let’s look over at that.
Psalm 37:21 says, "The wicked borrows and does not pay back; the righteous shows mercy and gives. " Verse 22 continues, "For those blessed by Him will inherit the land, but those cursed by Him will be cut off. " What is it saying?
It gives a definition of the wicked and the righteous. Who are the wicked? Those who borrow and do not pay back.
Who are the righteous? Those who show mercy and give. So, if we plug that back into Proverbs 13:22, wealth will transfer from those who have borrowed and cannot pay back to those who show mercy and give.
What does that mean? It means that in the coming wealth transfer, there’s going to be a huge flow of wealth. It goes from the wicked, defined by the Bible as those who borrow and do not pay back, to the righteous, those who show mercy and give.
What does that mean? What I discovered is this: it means that when this wealth transfer comes, you don’t want to be on the side of the equation where you’ve borrowed a lot. Why?
Because wealth transfers from those who have borrowed and cannot pay back. Do you know that it’s happening already? Right here in the United States, there are people who have lost their homes.
Why? Because they borrowed and can’t pay for it. Where did it go?
A bank repossessed it, and then it’s sold at auction, many times for a very small amount or a much lesser amount than the actual value of the house. The house is wealth; it transferred from those who borrowed it and couldn’t pay back to those who show mercy and give. Now, there's another interesting concept I want to look at here in Matthew 5:5.
I'm going to discuss meekness, and God showed me something about meekness that’s very, very interesting and ties into this wealth transfer. What I want to show you is that wealth also transfers from those who are the opposite of the meek to the meek. So, wealth goes from the non-meek to the meek, and we'll define the non-meek in just a moment.
If we look at Matthew 5:5, it says this, a very well-known scripture most of us have read many, many times: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the land. " Now, some translations say they shall inherit the earth; it's actually the land in Greek. They are going to inherit the land.
When I read that, I thought, "Well, God, I want to be meek. " What two things are going to happen to the meek? Number one, they're going to be blessed, and number two, they're going to inherit the land.
The problem was I didn’t know what meek meant, so I looked it up in my Bible dictionary. Do you know I had always sort of equated meek with humility? That a meek person was a humble person.
But I found out these are two totally separate things. Humility is a state of being; humility has to do with who you are. Humility is an attitude on the inside.
Meekness has to do with the state of action; meekness is what you do. Humility is who you are. So, a humble person may be humble but not necessarily meek.
When I looked it up in my Vine's Bible Dictionary, it's interesting. Here’s what it said: "Meekness is a fruit of power. " It said the Lord Jesus Christ was meek not because He was impotent, not because He had no power.
No, Jesus was meek for this reason: He had great power, great authority; He voluntarily, as led by the Holy Spirit, chose to limit His authority and power to a very small percent of available resources. So, here’s how I would define meekness: a meek person is someone who has great authority, great power, and great resources, but as directed by the Holy Spirit, they voluntarily choose to limit themselves to use only a percent of available power, available resources. So, a meek person is a person that has some margins.
Margins—that’s very interesting. I’ve got a piece of paper here. This paper has margins right here on the edge.
These are margins. What does that mean? It means we didn’t type all the way to the edge of the page; we left a little space at the edge of the page.
So, the question is this: does your life have margins? Do your finances have margins? Why?
Because margins define meek people. A meek person is somebody that voluntarily chooses not to use a hundred percent of available capacity. Now here was a huge revelation to me: what’s the opposite then of meekness?
If meekness means I have great resource, great capacity. . .
But I voluntarily choose to use a limited amount of it. In other words, I have this much; I've volunteered to use this much. So, this is a margin here.
If that's what meekness means, then what's the opposite of meekness? The opposite is: I have this much, and I voluntarily choose to use this much. In other words, I use more than the available capacity.
I use 120%, 140% out of 50% of available capacity. By the way, what is the word for that when I choose to use more than a hundred percent of available capacity? The word for that is debt.
Debt! So I go into debt. In other words, I have this much, and I choose to borrow this much to use this much.
In other words, I'm going to use 120%. Where do I get the extra 20%? I borrow it.
Here was a revelation to me: the revelation is that debt is the opposite of meekness. Now, if we plug that back into the scripture: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the land. " So what about the opposite?
What happens to the indebted? Well, not blessed. Or if you want to go stronger, cursed are the indebted, for they shall lose the land.
That's the wealth transfer equation we're talking about. Wealth transfers; land is wealth. It transfers from the home; it transfers from the indebted to the meek, from those who have borrowed and can't pay to those who show mercy and give, or to the meek.
Now, we're going to talk a lot more about that and what you can do about that in the next segment. But we're talking about the transfer of wealth that we saw in Proverbs 13:22. It goes from the wicked to the righteous or from the indebted to the meek. We saw in Matthew 5:5, you know, it's very interesting.
This happened before, back in the Great Depression in the 1930s. Do you know that there was a huge transfer of wealth? A lot of people know that many people went out of business; many people lost everything.
But do you know most people realize there were also some people that became very, very wealthy through the Depression? Who were those people that became wealthy in the Depression? Do you know I asked my dad that?
Because I was born significantly after the Depression; I didn't live during that time, but my father did. I asked him, "Dad, who was it that received a lot of wealth? What happened?
What was your experience in the 30s in the Depression? What happened to the people who lived around you? " My dad grew up on a farm in Wisconsin, and he said, "You know, my best friend down the road, his family lost their farm.
Another friend of mine, their family lost their business, and another family lost their house. " I said, "What do you mean lost? " He said, "Well, they lost possession of it.
They couldn't live there anymore; it wasn't theirs anymore. " I said, "Well, where did it go? " He said, "Well, the bank repossessed it.
" I said, "Why did that happen? " My dad said, "Because they had debt on it. They had borrowed money on the farm or the house or the business and couldn't pay for it, and the bank repossessed it because they couldn't pay for it because of the Depression.
The economy had gone down so much, and they weren't able to make the payments, so they lost it—the bank repossessed it. " I then asked my dad, "Well, who bought it? What happened then?
" My dad said, "Well, the bank many times held an auction, and somebody came and bought it. " I said, "How much did they pay for it? " My dad said, "You know, in many cases it was amazing; people bought farms, businesses, cars, houses—all kinds of things for sometimes.
. . " Five cents on a dollar—I mean five percent, ten percent of its former value—a very, very small amount of money.
I said, "Well, who did that? Who bought it? " My dad thought for a moment.
He said, "People that were cash-rich. People that had some extra cash. " And you know what?
Suddenly it dawned on me: he was describing people who had extra cash. You know who those are? Do you know who the Bible calls those people?
The meek. The meek are people who have extra resources; they have voluntarily limited their spending and use of resources to less than a hundred percent. That qualifies them as meek.
When the wealth transfer happened, what takes place? They inherit the land. And I thought about my dad's friend, his family on the farm down the road.
They lost that farm because they were indebted, so literally the indebted lost the land. It went back to the bank, the bank sold it for a fraction of its former value, and who received it? The meek.
Somebody who had a little bit of extra cash. And suddenly I realized Matthew 5:5 isn't talking about the sweet by-and-by; it is not talking about the Millennium in the future; it's not talking about in heaven. It is talking about something that is a very practical reality in our world right now: wealth transfers from those who have borrowed and cannot repay to those who have a little bit of extra cash.
Why am I saying this? Because in the coming wealth transfer, you want to make sure that you're on the correct side of the wealth transfer equation. You want to be one of the meek, not one of the indebted.
You know, a very interesting thing: as I traveled around in the early 2000s and ministered in various churches here in North America, but also in many other places, I would go into churches in 2002, 2003, 2004. I would ask pastors and people in the church, "Have there been any words in this church about finances? Has there been a prophetic word, or has your pastor preached anything about finances in this church?
" Inevitably, people would say yes. I would say, "What is that word? What have you heard?
" And people would consistently, consistently say, "Well, the word we've heard is get out of debt. " I thought, "Isn't that interesting? That word was coming by the Spirit of God to the church in the early 2000s, all through the 2000s: get out of debt.
" Why would God say that? I believe it's because God knew and understood there was a coming wealth transfer, and He wanted His people to be the meek—those who would inherit the land—not the indebted, who would lose the land. Unfortunately, I think many, many people never heard that word.
Many, many people didn't pay any attention to it. As a matter of fact, some people went and bought a bigger house, got more in debt, bought a bigger car, bought more things on credit cards, and actually increased their debt rather than reducing it. Many, many people right now find themselves in a very, very difficult situation where they have a lot of debt, and they're saying, "This is not good news to hear about that.
" Do you know what? God has a miracle for you. I just feel an anointing right now to pray for you.
I believe there are several listening right now, and inside you're in turmoil, thinking, "I have a lot of debts. What am I going to do? What's going to happen?
I don't want to be the one that loses everything. " Do you know what? God has a plan for you, and the whole purpose of this is not to make you hopeless but to give you hope—to understand, do you know that God will do supernatural things in your life beyond what could possibly naturally happen?
I've experienced that myself. I had a supernatural elimination of my house mortgage that I'll share about in a later broadcast. But I want to pray for you right now.
If you're in debt and you're saying, "I don't know how I would get out. I need something supernatural," I want to pray for you. Would you just close your eyes and receive these words?
Father, I pray right now for that one listening, watching this broadcast. Father, deep, deep in debt—Father, would you first of all just remove the fear? Remove the fear in Jesus' name.
And, Lord, that deep, deep feeling—it’s my fault, I made many mistakes—Father, would you remove that feeling of guilt, that feeling of shame? Jesus died for that. Would you remove it?
And, Father, I pray for that one listening right now for a supernatural breakthrough starting today—things that will change; a supernatural release of finances; cancellation of debts; Father, things that only You can do. I pray that over each person listening, and I declare over you: God is your source, and God is for you, not against you. He will move on your behalf in the mighty name of Jesus.
Amen. I want you to expect some supernatural change to take place, and when it does, would you please write us and let us know what happened? There will be an email that you can find on your screen that'll let you know where to write and let us know what has happened in your life.
Well, we're going to continue talking about what exactly does "meek" mean. Here's a very interesting thing I understood as I studied this concept of meekness: do you know it not only pertains to money; it pertains to every other area of life. And unfortunately, in our North American culture, people are not only not meek in their finances; most people are indebted and not meek in their relationships.
They're not meek in their time; they're not making. . .
In their physical health, they burn the candle at both ends. Do you know a lot of people suffer from health problems because, in essence, they're borrowing from their physical body? Now, it costs them as time goes on.
It's very interesting. I read in one book—don't even remember the book right now—but this is a very interesting psychological study that two psychologists did at a seminary. They went to a seminary and asked the students the question, "Why are you at this seminary?
" Do you know that people are almost universally—the students answered with two reasons: "I love God" and "I want to help people. " Now, here's a very interesting thing. These guys set up an experiment with a professor, and what they did was the professor gave each one of the students a preaching assignment for the following week and a time that they were to come and give their message.
Most of the students were assigned the teaching of the Good Samaritan—remember, that's from Luke chapter 10. We'll look at that in just a minute, where the man asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbor? " and Jesus told the parable about a Samaritan that helped a man who had been robbed, beaten, and was in the ditch.
So, for most of these students, that was their assignment: to preach about that. What he did was give some of the students time meekness and some of them time debt. What do I mean by that?
He said to one, "Your preaching assignment is at nine in the morning," the next one at ten, and the next one at eleven. So, the first one came, and the professor said, "Oh my goodness! We must have had some miscommunication because actually it's a 20-minute walk to get over to the classroom where you're supposed to speak, and your message starts in 10 minutes.
You should have come 10 minutes earlier at least, but you better get going now or you’re going to be late. " So that student left and went over there. The next one, they endowed with time meekness.
The one that came at ten o'clock was told, "You know, you don't need to speak until 10:30. It's about a 20-minute walk; you've got about 10 minutes extra, why don’t you get started? " Some people had 10 minutes of extra time, while some people were short 10 minutes.
Then what they did was put a sick man on the way to the classroom and had a hidden camera type of setup. What was most amazing? Do you know that every one of the people that were in time debt—they were late for class—did not stop to help the sick man?
This was the amazing thing. Some people actually stepped over the sick guy on their way to preach their sermon about the Good Samaritan. Other people didn't even notice him; others walked around him.
But here's the amazing thing: people that had meekness in time, do you know what they did? Most of them stopped, made a phone call, and tried to get some help for the man. Now, what was the difference?
The amazing thing was they all had the same motive. They all loved God and wanted to help people; that was their declared reason for being there. But when it came down to it, the people that were not meek in time didn't actually stop to help the guy.
You know, when I read that parable about the Good Samaritan in Luke chapter 10, everybody wants to believe, "I'm the Good Samaritan," and that's what I wanted to think—I’m the Good Samaritan. But you know what I discovered? In reality, I wasn't the Good Samaritan.
I wanted to be the Good Samaritan, but I wasn't able to be the Good Samaritan because, do you know how I had structured my life? With absolutely no time to be able to do anything. When we read the parable in Luke chapter 10, what we find is that there’s a priest who crossed over to the other side of the road, a Levite who also crossed over to the other side of the road, and a Samaritan who actually stopped and helped the man.
Let's just take a look over at that in Luke chapter 10 and see what happened. It said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.
And by chance, a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan who was on a journey came upon him, and when he saw him, he felt compassion.
He came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He put him on his own donkey and brought him to an inn and took care of him. On the next day, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, when I return, I will repay you.
' Which of these three do you think proved to be the neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands? " Do you know when I read that? I thought, "Lord, you're right.
I probably would not be the Samaritan. " The reason is I’m always late for the next meeting I'm going to. I'm already feeling guilty about not being there on time.
I wouldn't have time to stop to help somebody. But you look at. .
. The Samaritan. This man was meek in many areas.
He was, you know, the priest that passed him by. I believe it may not be because he had a religious objection to talking to that man or touching him; it probably was he was busy. He was the modern-day minister of our time, just passing by because he didn't have time.
The Samaritan, first of all, had time—meekness. He had some time to stop and help the man. He had some extra room in his car, or on his donkey, so to speak, so he had some capacity to help the man.
The third thing was he apparently had some extra money because he said to the innkeeper, "Let me give you some money; take care of him. If it's not enough, spend whatever you need to spend to take care of him, and I'll pay you back. " So, apparently, the Samaritan also had relational credit with the innkeeper when he said, "Just spend our money, and I'll pay you back when I come again.
" The innkeeper didn't say, "You didn't pay me for the last three times you said that. " No, he had relational credit. So, apparently, he had meekness in his relationship with the innkeeper—meekness on his donkey, meekness in his time, meekness in his finances.
He was able to help the man. Do you know I find in many, many families, people don't have meekness in any area because they're stretched to the gills financially? Do you know what they do?
They spend every hour working, trying to pay for all their stuff. Then they make promises to their family members— to a wife, to a son— but can't keep the promises because there's no time. Next thing you know, you end up actually being a liar.
You end up telling your wife, telling your children you're going to do certain things, but you can't fulfill your own word because there's no time, no margins. That destroys relationships. Now people are under incredible pressure, incredible stress.
What happens next? They're burning the candle at both ends; they eat poorly, they sleep poorly. Next thing—they don't realize they're actually borrowing from their physical body, from their own physical health.
Now they have a health problem, and what happens now? They have no margins in their health, and that's just a cycle that goes round and round and round that I believe God wants to break so that we can establish meekness in finances, meekness in relationships, meekness in time, meekness in all these areas as directed by the Spirit of God—not using a hundred percent capacity in every area, but having a margin. This is God's plan.
Now, one last thing I want to show you from Matthew chapter 11, verses 28 through 30. Jesus told us something very, very interesting here about meekness, and I will close with this Scripture. Jesus said in verse 28, "Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me. " Now Jesus is going to describe his yoke. His yoke consists of primarily two things.
What are these two things that Jesus says are his yoke that we should take upon us? He said, "For I am meek and lowly of heart. " Meek and lowly of heart, or meek and humble, another translation says.
If you will take that yoke upon you, what's the consequence? What's the result? The next line says, "And you will find rest for your souls.
" Why? Jesus said, "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. " Now here's a very simple thing: do you know that if you're indebted in your money, if you have a lot of debt, you have a lot of time debt, you'll have a lot of relational debt?
Usually, easy and light does not describe your life. I mean, just think of this: which two words more describe your life, easy and light or difficult and heavy? If those words difficult and heavy more describe your life, you know what that tells you?
You're not walking meekly under Jesus's yoke; you’ve got a different yoke on you. Now Jesus's yoke—what defines that yoke? Humility and meekness.
What does that mean? Great capacity voluntarily choosing to use less than a hundred percent—that's meekness. What does that result in?
That results in your yoke being easy and your burden being light. What's the opposite of that? Indebtedness.
Being in debt—what does that result in? That results in your yoke being heavy, pardon me, your yoke being difficult and your burden being heavy. Now when you walk with Jesus’s yoke on you, humility and meekness, what's the result?
He said, "You will find rest for your soul. " In other words, on the inside, you get up each morning, "I'm at peace, Jesus's yoke is upon me. I have excess capacity of energy, I have excess capacity of money, I have excess capacity of time, of relational credit.
I'm not stressed to the max on every one of these areas. " Push the envelope in every one of these areas. Do you know our lifestyle, especially here in North America, is not a lifestyle of meekness?
It's a lifestyle of indebtedness in almost every area—relationally, in our physical health, in our money, in our time. And what does that result in? People's souls not being at rest and their yoke being difficult and their burden being heavy.
That is not what Jesus ever intended for anybody. Jesus intended for you to take his yoke upon you. So the good news is you can change yokes; you can eliminate that debt in all those different areas, and that's exactly what we're going to be talking about.
That's exactly what we're going to look at—how do we begin to do that? But before. .
. We look at how do we get rid of that eye in our next broadcast. You don't—do you know what I want to talk about?
How on earth did we get in this mess? Here's an interesting fact: do you know about four generations ago nobody had any debt—just regarding money? If you think about your great-great-grandparents, they probably had no debt.
Did they have a mortgage on their house? Probably not. Did they have a house?
Probably so. Well, how on earth did they have a house with no debt? My question is, what changed in the last four generations?
Do you know? Four generations ago, it would not have even entered into the mind of a young person who needed to buy a house to go to a bank and borrow money for 30 years to take a mortgage on a house. That thought would not have entered into somebody's mind.
Do you know that today that thought enters into almost everybody's mind? It doesn't matter whether they're Christians or non-Christians; everybody thinks the same way: "I need to go get a mortgage. If I didn't have a mortgage, I couldn't have a house.
" Do you know what? I don't—I don't have a mortgage, and I have a house. My children don't have a mortgage; they have a house.
You say, "Well, how is that possible? " I want to share with you exactly how that's possible. Here's what we're going to look at in the next broadcast: we're going to look at what changed from four generations ago till now, and how do we change it back?
How do we get out of this culture of debt in every area, but particularly in finances, and reverse it to go back to God's ancient path? Remember Jeremiah 6:16: "Stand by the ways and see, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it. " And what's the result?
You may be forgotten: "And you shall find rest for your soul. " What happens when you walk in God's ancient path? You find rest for your soul.
Why? Because you're taking Jesus's yoke upon you, and your yoke becomes easy and your burden becomes light. We're going to talk about how, specifically, we got in this mess and how do we change it on the next broadcast.
