I wasn't born this mother. I made them. At the bottom of insecurities, fear, self-doubt, lies was me buried in the fetal position.
How I got out of that was recognizing it, being honest with it, being truthful with it, and then fixing it. >> I was alone on this earth. I have God alone on this earth, and I have to fix everything.
99. 9% of the [ __ ] I did to get to where I'm at today was alone. Alone out there running in cold, in heat, suffering in pools, trying to swim at home in a room by myself trying to teach myself how to read and write, how to study.
You know, no one saw that [ __ ] There was no video camera. There was no podcast. There was no who's David Gogggin.
It was me. I taught myself everything in my whole life. I'm not a theorist, people.
There's a bunch of people who are theorists who go to the library, study the mind. They study it in a book. I studied it by being a practitioner.
I put my mind in hell and I realized how it was thinking. And I figured out tools and tactics on how to get through it, by being in it. Not by studying it, by being in it.
And literally, that's how I started callousing over, you know. So, I did what I did 67,000 pull-ups in 9 months. And it calloused my hands.
It calloused my hands for a good to protect my hands against the bar. I started learning how to callous my mind to callous over my victim's mentality. And that's what I did.
I no longer wanted to be a victim. A victim in my mind. I wanted to dominate when most people would refuse to dominate.
I wanted to dominate under the most harsh environment. I'm proud of what I created, but I'm more proud of I created it without an audience, without a cheering squad, without someone like, you know, like you run the Boston Marathon and people love that race. They run so fast because for 26.
2 miles, there's a mother scientist. Come on, man. You got it.
You can do it. You know who you are. When there's no mother out there and you're running and you're at mile 75 or 150 milei race ain't nobody cheering for you, you're broken.
You're defeated. It's you and you alone in your head. And I stayed that way for the better part of 30 years.
For the first 20ome years of my life, it was just darkness. But if you are able to get up every morning, have no passion, no drive, no motivation, no [ __ ] and still get up with that kind of fire, you will be successful in life. I guarantee you that >> the most important conversation you'll ever have is the one you have with yourself.
>> You wake up with it, you walk around with it, eventually you'll act on it. You can't judge yourself off of the so-called competition that we have made up in our mind. the things that how people look, how people act, how smart someone is.
This is a race that you run completely alone and you're all by yourself. It's that person when all hell breaks loose and and everything falls apart that says, "I still got to get it in. " And how you get to that point in life where I figured out it's so noisy right now.
This world is so noisy. We we all walk around these phones, computers, the world is so fast, we're not able to think. the the most powerful weapon in the world.
We walk around with it. It's our mind. It's our brain.
You have to be able to go into a very dark place in your mind and figure who you are. Go back to what you want to do. What's your purpose?
We can't figure our purpose out or why we're here or why we even born or whatever because our it's so loud in our mind. We don't have any quiet time with ourselves to sit back and say, "What do I really want? " There's so many different dialogues in our head that we can't think.
So, my biggest thing is you have to be alone in a very dark place in your mind to think about what is important to you. It's funny, man. People want to know how I'm always motivated.
It's the unseen work. I'm out running at 2:00 in the morning, 1:00 in the morning, in the gym, long sessions by myself. You That's real.
how I'm able to just extract dopamine, the good dopamine, whenever I want. Man, I've trained 99% of my life alone. No one pat me on the back.
I did all of the work alone. My journey has pushed me so far, so lonely in my head and a lot of lowly, it's called the unseen work. No one knows what the David Gagus really does.
You see a one minute snippet. You read a little book. The [ __ ] I do on a daily basis gives me that very confidence.
Like I said up here, I know I've built belief that I may have failed, but building that belief knows I know I just didn't figure it out yet. Not that I can't do it. I just didn't figure it out yet.
And that's what all that is. And I've also built up an insanely high pain tolerance by having that dog. >> That dog.
>> I'm not some, Trust me, man. I was born some sickly little abused kid, afraid of everything. But I built up that dog.
And once you build that dog in you, man, the pain and the suffering and the lonely nights and the unbalanced. If you put the right people in that foxhole with you, you are dangerous mother. You're alone.
You're alone. You may have a shrink. you're going to you may have a best friend you're going to, but there's 24 hours in the day where you're alone in this brain and your brain is talking to you in all kind of ways and it wants to control you and pull you in these different pockets.
If you can't control your own brain and your brain controls you, you got to tell your brain where you want to go and how you want to go and how you want to get there. You got to control it. If not, it's over.
In my life, there's a lot of times in my life it wasn't so inspirational. There's a lot of lonely moments where there was no going the distance song in the background to keep me going. There's a lot of times a lot of quiet times, a lot of failure, a lot of disappointments, a lot of starting from scratch.
But that's when I started to develop a different mentality. >> And I started to develop a mentality of this is where it's at. Where you find out where you're at is when you're at the lowest part of your life.
So I started to develop a whole new mindset. Like the lowest part of my life used to make me feel bad. The lowest part of my life now it actually gives me strength.
But I know so many people stop. That's where they quit. When when they get to the sewer of life versus looking at it saying, "Oh yeah, mother.
Let's see what is up. Let's see the millions of men out here in this world. They're not going where I'm willing to go.
" Now, this is where people stop. And this is where I started to develop the different mentality is. You want to test my resolve.
You want to test my ability to go to the distance. You want to see where your life ends and mine begins. That's where that mentality started for me.
>> Cuz I started saying, man, you always end up in the dungeon. You got to find strength in that mother. No one else does.
You gain knowledge through suffering. And on the other end of suffering is a world that very few very few have ever seen. It's a beautiful world cuz that's where you find yourself.
On the other end of suffering is a life that many people don't know even exist. It's a beautiful world cuz we like like the 40% rule. We all live in this world where our brains are keeping us in this box.
Outside that box on the other edge of suffering, which is on the other of that 40% is a world that's endless of opportunity. But we are afraid to go outside that box because in that box is comfortable. That's where all of our nice stuff, you know, that's where the nice four-lane highways at.
I know where the restrooms are at. I know where the gas stations are at. outside that box, man, God gives you a shovel and it says, "Man, start digging.
" That's not fun. But when you dig, you dig your own path to all kind of stuff that's unknown. And that's why I started realizing, man, like on the other end of this is some beautiful stuff.
So I got outside my box and realized, man, 300 lb. Now look at me, I'm 185 lb. And on the other side of the box was all this stuff.
And I didn't know it was over there till I climbed the wall. Whenever you find things that you're comfortable doing, you're going away from the journey of life. A lot of us run away from our fears.
>> Sure. >> And we box oursel in to uh a lifestyle of this is all we can do >> cuz I'm afraid of everything outside this box. >> Yeah.
>> So I'm comfortable inside this box. I jumped the box. >> Oh, you did?
>> For the first time in my life mentally, I jumped the box and said, "Hey, I got I got I got to come out here and play. " >> I was like, "Man, this rest of your life is going to suck. It is going to suck.
Not because you're going to be a loser, but because you're going to finally start to win. And winning is not easy, my friend. >> I said, I'm going to die trying.
>> I don't give a what it does to me. I don't give a if I break myself off. I don't care if I lose legs.
I don't care if I have stretch. I I don't care what it is. I don't care how much pain I go through.
I don't care. But this reflection in the mirror will change or I will die trying. I will die.
I will not look at this guy in the mirror anymore cuz I can lie to you right now. I go back to that mirror every night and I usually shave my hand almost every damn night and I got to sit there for 15 minutes and look at myself in the mirror and that reflection is telling me every thing I'm not. And it starts to some of us are allowed to go away from that.
I was haunted every day 24 hours of day would be in my head. Hey mother, you ain't [ __ ] this is what you're going to be the rest of your life, man. To the point I say, you know what?
I'm gonna break myself off, man, trying to fix this person. So, that's that's why it's worth it because now sitting in front of you today, I earned I earned the right to be broken. And people go, man, what what does that mean?
Every scar, every wound, every broken bone, every issue I had, even all these little marks come in my body, it comes from sacrifice trying to become someone. And I'm not saying do what I did. My life took me down a journey that almost forced me to propel myself to where I went and it was worth it.
This isn't for the masses. This is for those who want to leave normal behind. Those who are a source of a new realm.
It's a lonely journey. You're isolated. Those who used to keep pace with you will fall off.
They'll see where their world ends and yours begins. Your abilities suffer, endure. Our work must be greater.
You must be willing to extend yourself to the limit with no guarantee of success. Every day you must ask yourself, did I do enough? >> You can achieve a lot of [ __ ] if you get off your ass and you start moving and you start motivating yourself.
Start becoming self motivator. >> Well, hey, go out there, run a couple minutes a day, you know, bike, you know, do some uh exercises, just just get in shape. >> We got to get going.
Work out every day. Better yourself every day. Suffer.
Go back to a spot that's not so comfortable for you. What did you do today to get uncomfortable? What did you do today to earn that manhood?
It might be April where you are and you're expecting nice weather and [ __ ] but it's 20°. So, you might be somewhere where it's too hot. So, you might have sore legs, sore back, sore shoulder.
So, the struggle is real. It never gets any easier. You got to get harder.
I was out yesterday getting after it. Had one of the best runs I've had in a long time. PR that [ __ ] So no one cares what you did yesterday.
It only matters to you doing today. Those who take me literally. So I'm a cheerleader for those who want to be better, not for those who want to stay the same.
And this is when your mind has to change. You got to start thinking I'm the grittiest mother in the world. Your dehydration it lick your mother lips.
Your legs are all sore. You got shin splits and stress fractures. No you don't.
You got sore legs. Get out of your head and stay hard. It's the second run of the day 90°.
But y'all don't care about that [ __ ] My legs are dying right now. Heavy as [ __ ] But y'all don't care about that [ __ ] My toenails, the bottom of my feet. I'm hot as Y'all don't care about that [ __ ] Well, check this out.
Neither do I. That's why I'm out here every day doing this [ __ ] Cuz my feelings, I don't give a about them. Sometimes people try to motivate themselves.
When times get bad, get hard and [ __ ] Talk about life gives you limits. Make lemonade. Oh, that [ __ ] When life gives me mother limits, I eat the mother.
So, I got an email the other day. This guy's talking about he's struggling to get up. Wants to go to the gym and start grinding early in the morning.
I said when I was 24, I had the same condition and had the same problem. So I started just studying it. The more I studied it, I came with this crazy conclusion.
I was just being a [ __ ] When I say [ __ ] it's not gender specific. It's a mindset. In goggles, it means weak, soft, feeling sorry for yourself.
Get your ass up and lace them up. We all like to take this four-lane highway. The easy highway has has signs.
It has restaurants. We all love that four-lane highway. We always step over the shovel.
And all I did was I picked up that shovel. And that shovel I made my own path. And you may have big boulders and [ __ ] They may be getting 200 miles up the road faster than you.
But going through this path of life, this journey over here that you make yourself, that's incredibly difficult. What comes out the other end of that mother is some glorious [ __ ] that you can't even explain to people. A lot of us dream big.
You you should dream big. Draming big is important. You know, some of us want to be doctors, lawyers, dentists.
Some of us want, you know, want to be in special operations. So you have this big dream. You can see it so clearly like it's right in front of you.
You can go out and touch it. But the thing about it is somewhere if you dream big enough somewhere down that journey that dream becomes a mother nightmare. And what happens in that nightmare you start to have all these questions like if you want to be a special offs you may not be a great swimmer.
You may just realize I'm not a great swimmer. I'm not a great runner. You may start to fail tests and all these questions start to flood your mind.
Why am I here? I'm not good enough. Trust me, I know all about the questions.
They will flood your mind. If you do not have the answers for them, you will quit. The answers lie in the repetitions.
You must not forget the repetitions you put into trying to dominate the craft that you're in today. Always, always embrace the suck. Adapt to the suck.
Stay home. A lot of us don't believe that we're free. We live as prisoners in our minds.
You don't need to be in the military to be a warrior. You got to realize something. A lot of us are familiar with the economic recession.
We can't do [ __ ] about it. But we don't realize is this. We're in a recession.
It's time for us to realize that we need to attack. We need to attack those in front of us. A lot of people are getting weaker right now.
It's time for us to get stronger. that middle recession. Stay home.
>> So, when I was going through training, we had to carry these real big heavy ass logs and boats around. And I realized on the toughest of days, my mind would uh allow the demons to come in and roost in my head and start to give me all these different thoughts. So, I realized if I could find a little bit more during training, I could get over these hard times.
So what I would do is after a hard day of getting my ass kicked, I would go to the gym. And I realized if I can go to the gym after these hard days, it would teach my mind that there was no finish line. So one day this one guy in my boat crew saw me going to the gym.
He's like, "Why the going to the gym after a hard day at Buds? " I said, "Those boats and logs are heavy. " A couple days later, we were carrying boats and logs down the beach down and back.
He quit. I looked at him. I said, "Hey, who's going to carry the boats?
The idea is this. Life is the boat. " >> So, I just got back from a long run.
And what I realized for myself and for a lot of people is that life is one big tug of war between mediocrity and trying to find your best self. So, there's tricks to all this crap in life. Life is one big head game.
One trick in this situation is, so I didn't want to run. So what did I do? I figured out a couple of things.
You have to sometimes let mediocrity think that you're giving into it. So I said, you know what? Instead of going for a 20 mileer, let's go out for an easy six or seven.
What that did to my brain was it said, "Okay, mediocrity of one. " So it let loose a little bit. It let go of that.
Oh, this is going to suck. This could be okay. It's not too bad.
The second you get to mile two, guess what happens? Greatness pulls mediocrity in the mud. Get out there and get after it.
The mind is a medieval mother. It's constantly fighting against you. It's the only thing in the history of the world that shows up on time every time.
It has the tactical advantage over you. It knows your fears. It knows your insecurities.
It knows everything about you. It might be the only thing in that world that knows all about you. You got to know about it.
It's going to show up when you don't want to show up. It's going to show up at the worst time possible when you want to be successful. It's going to say, "Take the easy road.
Take the easy way out. " You got to learn your brain like your brain has learned you. I went through training, hundred mile race, tours of mile races, pull-up records, all on the mind.
It wasn't a physical thing I had. I was broken. Literally broken at the start line of everything I did, including Navy Seal training, Ranger school, everything I did in the military.
I was But I didn't sit back and say, "Hey, man. " So, no one knew. Through discipline, through self-discipline, through repetition, through tons of repetition, the same thing that you don't want to do.
That's that's the key thing. Through repetition of things you don't want to do, you develop mental like like an armor for your mind. Start to armor your mind because your mind's like, "Okay, we suffer.
We suffer every day. " It's what we do. We do stuff that sucks every day.
So then when the suck stuff comes, you're ready for it. A lot of people say that nothing's impossible. [ __ ] I even said that nothing's impossible several times in my life.
I lied. There's a lot of things that are impossible for you to do. But what happens is when we come across something that's very hard and we try it once or maybe twice, we then say, "We're done.
We can't do it anymore. " Before you say something's impossible, do it and do it and do it to a level that people think that you might be crazy until you say it's impossible. I'm tied up hands and feet.
I hate the water. I sink like a rock, but this is the one thing that almost stopped me from feeling my dreams. Never forget to train your mind in life.
A lot of us work our ass off trying to get to a better place, a place that makes us feel better about ourselves. Some people want to do ultra racist. They're starting to PR during training.
Some people want to be a lawyer or a medical student, so they're taking these practice tests and they're questioning the practice test. But guess what happens once you get to the actual event? Your mind isn't ready.
Your mind's not prepared. You've been studying. You've been training.
You've been working out, but your mind's not prepared. Story for you. When I was 19 years old, I was going through the Air Force trying to be a pair rescueman.
I was doing push-ups, sit-ups, swimming. I was doing all this [ __ ] knocking out the park. One of the best in the class.
But the second a [ __ ] obstacle got in my way, I wasn't prepared for it mentally. I was a beast. All I was doing was I was training a bigger, stronger, faster quitter.
You got to train your mind for all obstacles that might get in your way. Stay hard. Life isn't fair.
We have to understand that it shouldn't be fair. It's a trial ground. It's a testing ground.
It's built to make us harder. It's built to make us as strong as we can, to test us, to drive us. So mentality is the only thing that gets us through life.
I was an underdog. We are all underdogs in life. Even the baddest person in the world should think that way.
So you should always have I've never arrived mentality. And the can't hurt me mentality is no matter where you come from, the sewer or wherever you think you're from. When I got out of the sewer, I got to the road and looked around and said, "Can't hurt me.
" Nothing should be able to hurt you. If you believe that, it starts to become true. There has to be something so deep in you that drives you.
So what what really does it for me is I know what we're capable of. And I know that most human beings aren't willing to go where I am. >> And that's a very very dangerous thing.
I'm not saying I'm bearing anybody else. Everybody has this talent. >> Sure.
>> It's not a talent. It's just realizing that we stop way short of our true potential. So through my life I realize these things and I know what gives me fuel as I know that most people who are blessed with so much talent, great parents, great upbringing didn't come where I come from.
They're going to quit before me having all the tools that they have. They didn't have the ability to examine themselves. When you have everything so nice in life, it's it's great to have a great life.
Yeah. But what happens is you don't self-examine. You don't do a live autopsy.
When you have a up life, it almost forces you to do a live autopsy. It forces you to find strength from places that no one looks from because food is not at the ready. You know, you're me.
I have a learning disability. It's not at the ready. I can't just pick up a book and start reading.
There's preparation. We have everything I do. There's there's everything I do has to come with so much preparation.
It's despicable. It makes me sick. My own personal life makes me sick.
That's why I'm so disciplined now. Without my self-discipline, there is no David Got it. >> Like I can't like stop reading.
I won't be able to read tomorrow. It will I will lose it that fast. You know, I you know, I cannot stop going to the gym.
My mind is set up in a spot where, hey, the second I stop, it wants to stop because I had a quitting mind growing up. When you get beat the [ __ ] out of you all the time, your mind wants to go to that nice spot where you're comforting, where you're not trying, where [ __ ] is easy. That's where your mind, it doesn't want to think.
You have all these things in the mind and in the mind can only absorb so much [ __ ] So all the pain that has to go through, it doesn't, it wants to push it away. Say, let's not do that. So every day I'm fighting where the mind wants to go.
So it's a it's a it's a constant it's a constant evolution, man. I'm I've never arrived. It's never enough.
There's zero finish line. When I was in elementary, our science teacher had us get a glass and put in the sink. He said, "Before you go to bed, turn the faucet on so this one drip gets into that cup and by the time you wake up, it'll be full of water.
You were teaching us about volume. I didn't learn [ __ ] about volume that day. I learned about patience.
All I wanted to do was turn that faucet on and fill that glass up. That's not how our goals go. Our goals don't go fast like that.
They go like that drip of water. But what I took from it is this. That drip of water was building that endurance in your mind.
That drip of water was building that calluses in your mind. And that's what we need to have. This is a slow process.
And that drip of water taught me that. Most days in life when I wake up, I'm not motivated, hungry, or driven. I have commitment to myself to the best version of myself.
What most of us are looking for is a special feeling of, "Oh, I feel great this morning. I'm going to get out of bed and get a quick five miles in or going to the gym. " If you're looking for that feeling, let me tell you one thing ain't going to come.
You have to learn to do when you don't want to do. Learn to bring that savage mentality out of yourself. The anim animalistic mother.
You think a savage gives a how he feels or how she feels? Then just do it. Learn to be your best self when you're least motivated.
Stop looking for a feeling to control what goes on in your life. You have an obstacle to overcome. So overcome the mother cosmos going on.
At the beginning of the year, a lot of you had goals, ambition, a lot of drive, a lot of motivation. Well, it's Easter. It's the middle of April.
When I navigate, I put back stops out there to make sure I don't get too far off course. I put those back stops in my personal life to make sure I don't get too far away from my goals and my dreams. A lot of you aren't proud of who you are.
You don't like the person you created. [Music] Do what I did. Start from scratch.
Create somebody that you're proud of. >> Where everybody's getting weaker, I'm getting stronger. It's not about the running, the swimming, the push-ups, the sit-ups.
It's about what those things do for your mentality. You don't get better on the dag on couch. You get better by coming out here and getting the after it every dagone day.
Stay hard. It's so easy to be great nowadays, my friend, cuz most people are weak. Most people don't want to go to that extra mile.
Most people don't want to find that extra cuz it sucks. It's miserable. It's lonely.
Stay in the fight. Stay in the war. Stay in the battle.
Armor your mind. So, ever since I've known David, he and this guy get together like once a month and run this 30 mile course. And without fail, every single time I come to pick them up, David's always lagging behind.
Well, this is the first time they're running today since David's leg surgery 2 years ago. And I was fully expecting to see David way off this guy's pace. And I don't know what happened, but I've already passed that guy about two minutes ago.
And here. So what happened? >> Finally broke his ass.
Every time he comes to the town, I crush him up business. Now he's back there somewhere. He crushed his own business.
>> Yeah, >> I swear to God. >> I saw him. >> He's owned a time share in my head for years.
And when he comes into town, he checks into it. I'm the landlord of the abyss now. You know, mile 14.
>> Yeah, it's about two mile climb. >> Yeah, of course. >> I marked it the other day.
I marked it drop off somewhere in there. I said, "Not today, bitch. " I felt his breath.
I heard his breath and I did my but heard it. >> What's that? >> I said, "What's that?
" I said, "I got something for you, ass bitch. " I felt his weakness. I know his weakness.
>> What is it? >> It's pain. Pain gives a doubt.
>> Got it. Look, can I get you any water or anything before I I leave? >> I've been dehydrated for a long time.
>> Okay. >> But I can't cuz you'll see me. I give a hope.
So guess what? I'm looking at my lips for a long time now. So you know I do it dehydrated.
>> Oh yeah. I see you up there.
