[Music] Australia has become the first country to officially switch on b2g or vehicle to grid Nationwide this now leaves manufacturers of charging infrastructure scurrying to register their products for official certification today I'll be exploring the options that are open to EV drivers we'll dispel some myths and confusion and hear from industry experts what the future of v2g will look like that is V2 GD Australia I'm Simone and this is the fully charged show we've teamed up with Duracell energy to celebrate their brilliant ecosystem of Home Energy Products and their Platinum homeowner offer by giving away
a Duracell bunny to win simply watch to the end and answer a question about the fully charged [Music] show okay a quick recap v2g or vehicle to grid is a technology that allows EVS to not only draw energy from the Grid in order to charge but to also send Surplus energy stored in the battery back to the grid this is called bidirectional charging and requires a device with an inverter to allow for the switch in Direction and it could be put to very good use such as helping to stabilize the electrical grid as the proportion
of intermittent renewable energy increases and providing emergency power the incentive to the EV owner is being paid per unit of energy sent to the grid yeah well I uh like to use the analogy around the stock market and uh being out to basically trade trade your energy when the the prices are high vers when they're low uh a good way to actually make some money is start sort of sending it back to the grid once uh once the the demand's there for something that sounds so ingenious and so simple v2g has been fraught with Technical
and Regulatory challenges since it was initially explored in the late '90s but now because standards Australia has updated the National Technical standards to include Provisions for v2g technology we have framework in which EVS can safely connect with and communicate with the grid this means EV owners will soon have access to a database of v2g charges that have been certified by the clean energy Council super exciting progress so today I'm visiting with V2 grid Australia to hear from industry veteran Matthew Downey about the company's exciting new products on the market and what's next for v2g in
Australia yeah so at the moment our our bidirectional charger we've got is um a 7 Kow uh chedo version and we've also got a CCS type 2 version both completely uh ready to go as we we finalized our C listing but with the chatmo I guess we're able to use that now with the number of vehicles uh that that have been able to do bidirectional for a few years uh however with the CCS type 2 we're still we're still trying to get some of those Brands uh ready to go you can come and learn more
about v2g as well as test out loads of VVS and see lots of other Clean Energy Technologies at everything Electric live at the Sydney showr on the 7th 8th and 9th of March check out the description box below for details on how to get tickets okay now tell me about this version of your numat yeah so this is just the exact same as the Chad that we've just shown you but it's our CCS type 2 uh version and um once again ready to go we're just needing uh some of the M to come to the
party so we can start doing some testing with them well this is pretty gamechanging it is it is if we can have 98% of our electric vehicles being able to be mobile batteries on Wheels and supporting our grid and supporting our homes it's it's going to change it's going to change everything so what about the majority of EVS in Australia using the ccs2 charging system well moving forward the majority of the next generation of v2g chargers soon to be appr proved for use will only be ccs2 compatible in saying that it's important to note that
not all EVS with a ccs2 port have the internal hardware needed for v2g meanwhile some models that are equipped with this internal Hardware still require a software update to enable it it can be hard to keep track of according to the most current info the v2g capable CCS 2 models available in Australia include the Kia ev9 the CER born the Volks wagon id4 and id5 and the poar 3 around Q3 of this year so that's charging so now if I want to discharge from the EV Y what would I do yeah cool well it's uh
pretty simple swipe our card click discharge confirm and away we go at the moment we've got it uh listed for 11,000 including G um payback period you know can vary based on I guess how aggressive you want to be with it um how risk adverse you may be we've done some Roi reports where you could have that payback in 2 years um but it could be up to 8 years as well there's been a few reports done where you could potentially make about $122,000 a year based on your vehicle to grid usage um but then
also the VA H scenario is where you could actually save around $2,000 a year on your energy usage so you know I guess there's some pretty good um results there to sort of be able to show people that if you use it correctly you could pay it off in that 4 Years or or you know almost in 2 years so and how can I choose whether or not I discharge energy from the battery of my EV to the home or to the grid yeah so it's all controlled through our app function where you can basically
choose that I'm just going to come home I'm going to run my home for now um but then also have the capability of seeing some some grid spikes and wanting to quickly change that as well so you from the app you can basically click sell and that will allow you to discharge back to the grid and start selling your your energy um but and then you know when you're ready to transfer back it's the same deal you can sort of then just change that back to um v h scenario so very important question will this
v2g charger stay up and running during a blackout yeah yeah 100% so we've got the blackout mode um in this so um you know in case of a you know it is in blackout it's it's going to be it can be fully operational um and likewise with um off- grid scenarios we can connect this off- grid um so yeah we've we've basically got all the capabilities we need to to cover all different scenarios I think people will wonder and certainly I'm curious as well as to which scenario will leave people better off financially whether it's
that you know you've got solar and you're using your EV for v2 and you've created like a closed energy ecosystem that saves you money versus exporting your stored energy to the grid and then earning money um what are your thoughts on this VA G is going to be quite Savvy like we we sort of touched on it's you know you've really got to be um on the on the money with it and and you don't want to be you don't want to be sending it back when it's not needed and you're paying for it but
you know when it really is needed you want to try and capitalize and I think that that will come from you know home Energy Management Systems being out a sort of like really sort of control usage um and also people being ready like ready to go it's like oh there's some good spot pricings to jump on now like let's take advantage of it but yeah I mean I I personally like both sides of it um I at home I'm definitely going to want to use it to run my house um but if there's the opportunity
to you know maybe earn $6,200 in an eye um you know I'll be trying to jump at that as well and what do you you see as the real potential of v2g and when do you think it'll become a normal part of our Lives yeah look I think you know the reality is it could become normal as soon as as soon as we're able to really use it um so I look I think 12 to 24 months is reality around that but the the potential of it is huge cuz you know I think a lot
of people look at it as like oh I could put this on my house which is a huge part of it so don't get me wrong there but also being able to utilize it for fleets and I guess the biggest thing again is we're just trying to educate that and trying to get people to think outside of the the just the home charge or discharge and and think about how we can actually use this in other applications so this is a photon electric truck it's got a ccs2 plug how do you see trucks like these
fitting into the wider b2g picture what Photon are delivering here the potential to go bir directional is is going to be massive you you know there's click and collect trucks there's Hardware trucks there's cancel Vehicles you know and again it's an 82 KW battery on wheels that doesn't generally get used at night so you know while they're out during the day they're parked up at the Depot at night and acting as a a source of power that can support our grid or even support local businesses again so we start looking at let's say wineries um
and they've got their trucks that are parked up running their cool rooms overnight helping them reduce some of their energy cost from you know a 24-hour um I guess power cycle where they're using power during the day for their dayto days but also their cool rooms are running at night so it's a huge game Cher for the commercial vehicle space most of us can get on board with sending stored energy from our vehicle to an appliance we want to use or powering our homes to reduce energy bills and stay up and running when there's a
blackout but suspicous are sometimes aroused at the idea of giving away our precious energy by sending it back to the GD plus it involves allowing a third party access to and control over your battery so having discussed the plethora of benefits of v2g are there any pitfalls okay now for the burning question will v2g degrade your car's battery over time the more you use it probably the shorter it may last um like anything um but at the same time the batteries that are coming out these days is uh you know 10 times better than the
myth that was started 10 plus years ago the myths that did come out 10 years ago are still with us today they're not a new myth about the new batteries it's you know it's just carried on over time so that's very true but the batteries that are being made in a lot of these vehicles now are just like they're exceptional and now to get the everyday EV driver on board how do we get them to see the value because it can feel counterintuitive to give a way or charge there's a lot of people out there
now that are really trying to work out how they can support their community so you know being able to use your battery to your battery on Wheels to essentially support your neighborhood your your your network your state when it's needed but then actually earn some money is you know I guess pretty enticing to me and and the absolute added bonus of running your home you know and the cost of living crisis at the moment with how expensive things are let alone how expensive electricity costs um you know being able to offset that by having your
daily commuting car come home and run and and basically run your home is has got to be like a selling point in it in itself and to um to you know get that quarterly or monthly electricity bill where it's instead of $800 you know it's it's maybe it's $80 um has got to be you know a pretty good incentive to sort of transition to this as you can see exciting developments are well underway but as with the widescale roll out of any new technology we can expect teething problems thanks to previous and ongoing research trials
