Let us begin with the omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA. A clinical trial published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that older adults who supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids over a period of several months showed measurable increases in muscle mass and significant improvements in muscle strength compared to a placebo group. The reason timing matters so significantly here is that your body experiences an elevated period of muscle protein breakdown following the overnight fast, and getting casein protein into your system early helps begin interrupting that breakdown process as promptly as possible.
