Brazil was once hailed as the next economic superpower set to overtake Nations like Britain and France in 2012 it stood as a leader for economic growth its GDP soared on the back of abundant energy minerals and farmland but today its GDP has shrunk by almost half from its peak and the country's current economic landscape is unrecognizable unemployment is high and public debt is growing yet Brazilians are also grappling with inflation domestic politics are unstable and the government is a bureaucratic nightmare the contrast between Brazil's past economic growth and its current decline calls into question the
success of all emerging markets in this economic roller coaster mirrors Brazil's performance on the soccer pitch once synonymous with vibrant worldclass football Brazil's recent World Cup shortcomings reflect a nation broadly struggling to live up to its potential both on and off the field Brazil faces a pivotal question what caused this reversal of Fortune and can Brazil reclaim its position on the global stage Brazil's economic trajectory wasn't always so uncertain in the early 2000s the nation embarked on a meteor rise that gripped the attention of economists and global leaders both wondered how did a former economic
Backwater transform into a Powerhouse in just over a decade well from 2003 to 2013 Brazil experienced an economic boom driven by skyrocketing global commodity prices China was industrializing rapidly this created an insatiable appetite for raw materials and Brazil found itself perfectly positioned to answer the call its agricultural sector Rose to the challenge the country emerged as a top five producer of 35 different Commodities Brazil's farms and ranches turned out soybeans grains and sugar making it the world's largest net exporter of agricultural products Brazil's Rich iron ore deposits were shipped to feed China's growing steel industry
petrobras offshore oil production helped feed China's need for crude oil thick Amazon forests were turned into Pulp and Paper for Chinese processed Goods when the 2008 financial crisis royed International markets Brazil escaped largely unscathed that was because China's demand for commodity exports barely slowed down so the Brazilian growth story marched on Brazil was a huge country with control of all the resources it would need to develop GDP per capita was rising and if Brazil got wealthy enough economists began to imagine a consumer Market with 200 million people beginning to lift other South American economies too
the country's leaders spoke confidently of Brazil taking its rightful place among the world's great Powers the government used its Newfound wealth to implement ambitious social programs like Busa Familia which provided financial aid to lowincome families these initiatives lifted Millions out of poverty and dramatically expanded the middle class and access to healthcare and education improved dramatically however beneath the surface of this economic Miracle cracks were beginning to form as Brazil basked in its Newfound Global status it landed a potentially crowning prize the opportunity to host the 2016 Olympics the announcement was met with optimism domestically it
was seen as a chance for Brazil to Showcase its economic prowess and cultural vibrancy to the world the country's leaders envisioned the games as a coming out party for a nation that had finally taken its place among the global Elite just like the 2008 Beijing Olympics had been for China however the gap between Brazil's aspir ations and its reality began to widen almost immediately as preparations for the Olympics ramped up the country's economic foundations started to crumble the commodity boom that had fueled Brazil's meteoric rise was coming to an end exposing the underlying weakness in
the nation's economic structure as demand from China slowed and prices for iron ore and oil plummeted Brazil's economy ground to a halt simultaneously political instability began to rise corruption scandals emerged eroding public trust and investor confidence and the government's ability to manage the economy effectively came into question with the realization that the increased government budget had not been spent well infrastructure projects promised as part of the Olympic bid fell behind schedule and way over budget images of Unfinished facilities surrounded by waste and debris began to circulate internationally harnessing Brazil's reputation public servants facing unpaid wages
went on strike and the accompanying economic downturn hit everyday Brazilians hard unemployment Rose sharply and the gains made during the boom years began to erode the expanding middle class once heralded as the sign of Brazil's economic Miracle found itself struggling to hold on to its Newfound status as the world's attention turned to Rio De Janeiro for the games it was Brazil's economic and political turmoil taking Center Stage the country that had been poised to join the ranks of global superpowers was now grappling with a recession political scandals and widespread public discontent the Olympics even became
a contentious issue within Brazil critics argued that the billions spent on hosting the games would have been better used to address the country's pressing social and economic needs the disparity between the gleaming Olympic venues and the surrounding favellas served as a stark reminder of Brazil's pers consistent inequality the aftermath of the Olympics saw Brazil grappling with the consequences of its economic policies and overambitious Promises the dream of becoming a global superpower was gone and the problems weren't over yet as Brazil's economy faltered an unexpected Revelation was brewing what started as a smallscale investigation would soon
spiral into the largest corruption scandal in the country's history implicating some of the most powerful figures in Brazilian politics and business in 2014 a routine moneya laundering probe at a local car wash unexpectedly unveiled a vast network of corruption involving highlevel politicians and state Enterprises like Petra Ross the investigation dubbed operation Car Wash would Shake Brazil to its core operation Carwash revealed a massive scheme to defraud petross particularly concerning contracts to the Luke ative pre-salt oil reserves discovered in 2007 the scale of the corruption was staggering with billions of dollars siphoned off through inflated contracts
and kickbacks as the investigation progressed it became clear that this was not just a case of isolated corruption but a systemic problem that had permeated Brazil's political and Economic Institutions for years this was revealed at the exact same time that China's economy was slowing down as Brazil's primary export partner missed growth targets it had a ripple effect in Rio the country's GDP dropped by 75% in 2015 foreign investment which had been a key driver of Brazil's economic growth sharply declined as International companies became wary of the risks associated with doing business in a country mired
in corruption the political Fallout of operation Car Wash was equally dramatic the investigation led to the impeachment of President Dilma Rusev in 2016 as well as the imprisonment of former president Lula and yes he then went on to become president again and is leading the country now I promise we'll get to that later these events marked a pivotal moment in Brazilian politics highlighting the depth of corruption within the country's leadership and the fragility of its Democratic institutions widespread protests erupted across the country as the population demanded accountability operation Car Wash also exposed the vulnerabilities associated
with Brazil's heavy Reliance on state-owned Enterprises like petross the Scandal highlighted how those companies which were meant to be engines of economic growth and national pride which instead had been woefully mismanaged now Brazil is actually a lot like Australia both countries are former European colonies which helped to establish their Democratic institutions they are rich in natural resources and farmland which underpin substantial commodity export economies dependent on China and despite enormous land masses most of it is uninhabitable so both countries's populations are packed into large cities on the coastline yet Australia's GDP per capita is more
than six times larger than Brazil's it's a simple math problem Australia's population is more than 8 times smaller than Brazil's so Australia implemented mechanized farming and Mining then split the revenues between far fewer people if Brazil wants to make such an enormous population wealthy it must industrialize it's the only way that a country so large has ever escaped the middle inome trap unfortunately the window to do it may have closed Peak investment into Brazil was over a decade ago and with the Baby Boomers retiring it's hard to imagine where the capital would come from China
doesn't want Brazil to industrialize they want those Industries to stay in China and why would you invest in Brazil as a European the crime rates are similar to that of South Africa recent data shows that Brazil recorded over 40,000 homicides in 2022 an average of 111 violent deaths per day that's the equivalent of one out of every five homicides in the world occurring in Brazil while Brazil's overall homicide rate has been on the decline since 2017 it is still more than three times higher than that of the United States some people hoped that jir bolaro
could clean up the problems and could be Brazil's leuan Yu or naib buk but since Brazil is a Federalist system like the United States the central government is not powerful enough to actually resolve the problem forcefully and even if they did Brazil has another problem standing in the way the total fertility rate in Brazil has dropped to just 1.6 children per woman so there is no longer a demographic opportunity to be seized Brazil will like get old before it gets Rich this was not supposed to be the case Brazil was supposed to be one of
the optimistic stories it has established old universities it has been independent since the 19th century it seemed like Brazil was a prime candidate for industrialization but they missed their window the boom times of the 2000s were actually the tell that they were going to miss the boat they pushed all their chips in on Commodities and an economy based on sugar coffee tobacco beef soybeans and beautiful beaches can only go so far this stands in stark contrast to the development path of South Korea Taiwan and Japan their leaders have been investing into industrial sectors for decades
they are now lynchpins in multiple industrial sectors and have some of the highest GDP per capita numbers in the EAS hemisphere instead Brazil completely hitched its cart to China the US is an agricultural exporter and we'd rather buy our beef from Argentina than Brazil the EU is extremely stringent on its standard for agricultural practices and farming in the tropical jungle requires a lot of pesticides that's not going to fly either it seems that Nations like Indonesia have learned from Brazil's mistakes and have Built Metal refining Industries to pair with their mineral mining operations but we
are in the very last window of this being a real opportunity for Brazil globalization is on the decline the world is splintering into more Regional economies there is no other large consumer market for Brazil to sell its Commodities into besides China and I've already made a video about why that won't turn out particularly well even worse Brazilian agriculture is highly reliant on fertilizers they're the second largest importer of fertilizer after China so any disruption to fertilizer production in bellarus and China means that Brazilian agricultural outputs drop substantially now here's the only thing that would make
me change my opinion on the future of Brazil if a Brazilian D Xiao Pang emerged that would get interesting Deng set up special economic zones around China and Unleashed enormous economic growth mle is going to be pushing for something similar in Argentina soon and anarcho capitalist fever dream create the low tax low regulation environment required for capital Investments to return to the region Target some compelling industrial developments that would be interesting to the nearshoring efforts happening in the Western Hemisphere and simultaneously break the back of organized crime make these cities way safer you'll get some
more tourists to come in who can enjoy some chasa now even as I say that it sounds improbable and it likely is but that's why great leaders are revered they actually changed the Arc of History rather than just allowing Society to muddle through there's a chance that the current leader of Indonesia has done that I made a video about it if you enjoyed this one go check that out thanks
