Oh wow. Wow. I believe that they gave me a raw deal because this industry is a monster.
It's the same monster that these me too was trying to tell you about. But they hate the monster for how it and I hate that monster for how it eats. But my god, man.
It's the same monster. I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless on mass and uh it just it really felt like oh this is a really clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore.
Two of the most courageous voices in comedy have just banded together to reveal something that Hollywood has been fervently attempting to conceal. This partnership between Jim Carrey and Dave Chappelle was unanticipated. Their statements echoed in a manner that rocked the entertainment business once the two men began disclosing the truth about Will Smith separately.
Now it's about more than just the smack. Two comedians who have left the Hollywood system decide they've had enough of the falsehoods. And this is what happens next.
What they're showing about Will Smith is far more unsettling than anyone had anticipated. Allow me to provide some background before we get into the details that Jim and Dave are revealing. This isn't a case of some random celebrity hurling shade.
A guy named Jim Carrey turned down a $20 million salary for the simple reason that he would not compromise his principles. Abe Chappelle truly went to Africa and abandoned a $50 million comedy central agreement because he observed how the business corrupts individuals. I'm a conspiracy theorist to a degree.
Like when I I connect dots that maybe shouldn't be connected, I don't know. But certain dots like when I see that they put every black man in the movies in a dress at some point in their career, I'll be connecting them dot like why all these brothers got to wear a dress. That's happened to me.
I'm doing a movie with Martin. Yeah, the movie's going good. So I walk in the trailer.
I'm like, man, this must be the wrong trailer cuz there's a dress in here. They come in. It's the writer comes in.
I think he's the writer. He's like, "Dave, listen. We got this hilarious scene where Martin's sneaking out of jail.
So, he disguises you as a and you put this dress on and Huh? M. No, I'm not doing that.
I don't feel comfortable with that. That should have been in the discussion. What?
You don't feel comfortable with it? I mean, it's a hilarious bit. All the greats have done it.
So, well, if all the greats have done it, it's kind of hacky, right? You're right. So, why don't we just not do it?
Cuz I don't feel comfortable wearing a dress. Oh, come on, Dave. Listen, we we got it all set up.
We're supposed to shoot. Every every minute you waste cost this much money. You know, the pressure comes in.
Huh? He said, "I'm No, I'm not wearing no dress, man. I'm funnier than a dress.
Just give me something funny to say. I don't need to wear no dress to be funny. What am I burrow?
" You know, we're going like this. And then finally, he's like, "Ah. " And he he leaves.
And then like the director comes Dave. It really would be great if you wear the dress. What is wrong?
What is this broke back mountain in here? So that where the wear the dress I want to wear the dress I want to wear this dress you know I mean this is oh gosh this guy's so difficult they leave man now the producers comes come on David would be so great I mean and then I started thinking about all the comics that I've seen man you know strong brothers why we why they putting us in these dresses But the minute it was clear, I was adamant. I'm not wearing the dress.
I'm not wearing the dress. All right, fine. Think of something else.
Guy comes back 10 minutes later. The whole new scene. God damn.
How did you write the scene so fast? You know, it's like, so you got to take a stink. Men speak out about Hollywood dysfunction.
You better believe they know precisely what they're talking about. And believe me, what they're saying about Will Smith is extremely explosive. Let's start with what transpired that forced both of them break their silence.
The Oscars moment that altered everything. March 27th, 2022, the 94th Academy Awards. Will Smith was meant to have his crowning moment after decades of being Hollywood's golden boy.
The $9 billion box office juggernaut was ready to win best actor for King Richard. Everything was perfectly choreographed for his great night. Then Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinket Smith's shorn head, comparing her to GI Jane.
You all know what occurred next. Will calmly strolled onto the stage, slapped Chris Rock across the face in front of 15 million people worldwide, returned to his seat, and yelled profanities at the comic. You know who's got the hardest job tonight?
Javier Belm and his wife are both nominated. Now, if she loses, he can't win. He is praying that Will Smith wins.
Like please Lord. Jana I love you. GI Jane too.
Can't wait to see it. All right. It's that was a that was a nice one.
Okay. I'm out here. Uhoh.
Richard. Oh wow. Wow.
Will Smith just smacked the [ __ ] out of me. Keep my wife's name out your [ __ ] mouth. Wow, dude.
Yes, it was a GI Jane joke. Keep my wife's name out your [ __ ] mouth. I'm going to Okay, so I could Oh, okay.
That was a greatest night in the history of television. The crowd sat in horrified stillness. Some suspected it was faked.
Others couldn't fathom what they just seen. But here's what truly matters, guys. Less than an hour later, Will won best actor and earned a standing ovation from much of the crowd.
That standing ovation became the trigger for all that followed. Hollywood has just seen one of its greatest actors commit assault on live television, and their answer was cheering. That's when Jim Carrey and Dave Chappelle felt they had to speak out since they'd seen this trend before.
They'd lived through Hollywood's duplicity and they weren't going to sit quiet while the business defended one of its own. Jim Car's harsh assessment. 3 days after the Oscars, Jim Carrey came on CBS Mornings and gave one of the most stinging comments to come from the whole debacle.
And guys, Jim didn't hold back even a tiny bit. He went right for the jugular, not just at Will, but at the whole Hollywood system that permitted him. Jim stated he was disgusted by the standing ovation, not surprised, but horrified.
He labeled Hollywood weak and claimed the business no longer deserved to call itself the Cool Club. Those are fighting words from someone who's been inside the system for almost 40 years. Jim understands precisely how Hollywood runs, and he was calling them out publicly for defending Will just because he's lucrative.
But Jim went much farther. He added that if he had been in Chris Rock's situation, he would have declared the very next morning that he was suing Will Smith for $200 million. I was sickened.
I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless on mass. And uh it just it really felt like, oh, this is a really clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore.
There was some question today about if anyone else had walked from the audience and done that, they would have been escorted out by security or maybe even arrested. The police asked asked Chris if he wanted to file charges. They asked Chris, "Do you want to file charges?
" And Chris apparently said, "No, he did not. " He doesn't want the hassle. I I had announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million cuz that video is going to be there forever.
It's going to be ubiquitous. You know, that insult is going to last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and disapprove or show a disapproval or say something on Twitter or whatever, you you know, you do not have the right to to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face cuz they said words.
No, no, I agree. I I think we all agree on that. I just thought, Jim, that it escalated to that, you know what I mean?
That it escalated to that level. It didn't escalate. It came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that's frustrating.
And I I I wish him the best. I really do. I don't I don't, you know, I don't have anything against Will Smith.
He's done great things, but that was not a good moment. It cast a Paul over everybody's shining moment last night. You know, a lot of people worked really hard to get to that place and to have their moment in the sun and to to get their award for the really hard work they did and and and it it is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you're nominated for an Oscar.
It's a gauntlet of devotion that you have to do. And uh and you know, just it was just a selfish moment to cast a Paul over the whole thing. And here's when Jim's analysis becomes extremely deep.
truly philosophical. Jim has spent years freely explaining his spiritual conversion and his knowledge that famous identities are illusions. In a viral 2017 interview, Jim recounted how he came to recognize that his own persona, the quirky comic everyone liked, didn't actually exist.
It was a show he'd been performing for so long that he'd nearly forgotten there was a genuine person beneath. When Jim looked at Will's actions during the Oscars, he noticed something unique. He saw a man who had established an avatar, a fabricated character that he'd maintained for years.
The Family Man, the Guardian, the adored star, the guy who only made uplifting movies and never stirred controversy. This wasn't the genuine Will Smith. This was a carefully chosen product aimed for public consumption.
According to Jim's interpretation, when Chris Rock made the joke about Jada, it wasn't only hurtful to Will the person. It was an assault on Will, the Avatar, the image that needed ongoing defense and confirmation. The character that Will had spent three decades developing brick by brick, movie after movie, interview by interview.
So Will didn't strike out to protect his wife. He struck out to preserve the illusion, the role he'd been playing for so long that he couldn't separate himself from it anymore. And when that persona was endangered, he replied with violence because the stakes were existential.
Without that avatar, who was Will Smith? That analysis struck different coming from Jim Carrey. This is a guy who's freely acknowledged how fame almost wrecked him.
How playing roles for so long made him doubt his own existence. How he had to step away from Hollywood to rediscover himself again. Jim noticed Will's conduct and recognized it instantly.
A guy locked behind an image unable to be real. Striking out furiously when the mask fell. I'm doing just fine.
Uh I just uh you know there's no meaning to any of this. So, I I wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could f come to and join and uh and uh and here I am. They're celebrating I mean, you got to admit it's completely meaningless.
Well, they say they're celebrating icons inside. Celebrating icons. Boy, that is just the absolute lowest aiming, you know, possibility that we could come up with.
It's like icons. What do you do? You believe in icons?
I don't believe in personalities. I don't believe that you exist. But there is a a wonderful fragrance in the air.
You don't believe certain icons have the power to make change, to think differently, to be bold, to inspire others. Artistry, you're one of them. On the good foot.
Yeah. Shut it down now. Yeah.
No, I uh I I don't believe in icons. Uh I don't believe in personalities. I believe that peace lies beyond personality, beyond invention and disguise, beyond the red that you wear on your chest that makes bullets bounce off.
I believe that it's deeper than that. I believe we're a field of energy dancing for itself. And uh I don't care.
But Jim, you got really dressed up for the occasion. You look good. No, I was that an accident.
I didn't get dressed up. There is no me. There's no you.
We're not here. This is a dream. things happening and there are clusters of tetrahedrons moving around together.
Okay. So, what's happening in our world right now? Because there is a lot of news that actually is relevant.
That's not that. Here's the thing. It's not our world.
None of this is real. Nope. So, you're just passing.
We don't matter. We don't matter. Oh, wow.
There's the good news. Okay. Dave Chappelle joins the discussion now.
If Jim Carrey represented the intellectual criticism, Dave Chappelle stepped in with the street level reality check and gang. Dave's viewpoint is significant since he's someone who really departed the country to escape Hollywood's corrupting influence. So, when the Will Smith Oscar situation occurred, everyone waited to see what Dave would say.
Dave's first public statements came during a stand-up concert mere weeks after the smack. He was playing in Liverpool, England, and someone in the crowd asked him about it. Dave's answer was typically harsh.
He claimed Will had obviously been going through something significant, something that had nothing to do with Chris Rock's humor. He stated the smack was a sign of a much greater issue. But Dave also remarked something that didn't attract as much notice at the time.
He claimed Hollywood had produced Will Smith and now Hollywood was getting what it sowed. He likened it to Frankenstein's monster. You can't develop something, nurture it, benefit from it for decades, and then pretend astonished when it turns against you.
That statement displayed Dave's awareness of how the industry operates. You're not supposed to do this in my business. I'm up here doing something that nobody else in this business has the balls to do.
I'm telling you something that you need to know. I'm trying to explain to you what you're seeing. You don't understand what you're seeing.
I am publicly flogging a network. And I know that this network they watching me and they saying why why are you doing this so so publicly? Doesn't feel good to be flogged publicly.
Oh, believe me, I know. I know exactly how that feels. When I quit my show, they said I was crazy.
What was crazy about it? I just didn't want to do it anymore. Then came January 10th, 2023.
The Golden Globes. Eddie Murphy was accepting the Cecil B. Deill Award, his first big awards appearance in years.
Eddie dislikes award presentations, has claimed they seem artificial and theatrical. So when he stepped up to collect this lifetime achievement accolade, people listened carefully to every word. Eddie's acceptance speech was quick and hilarious, thanking different individuals and making jokes.
Then at the conclusion, he delivered a phrase that made headlines across the globe. Pay your taxes, mind your business, and keep Will Smith's wife's name out your mouth. The crowd erupted in uneasy laughter.
Eddie grinned and continued, but the message was plain apparent. Will Smith botched up and even someone as revered as Eddie Murphy was calling him out publicly on one of Hollywood's greatest platforms. Now, here's where things gets interesting.
Just days after Eddie's Golden Globes address, Dave Chappelle was playing in San Francisco and he brought up what Eddie had said. Dave reminded the crowd that Eddie's joke wasn't simply a punchline. It was knowledge disguised as humor and Dave broke it down piece by piece.
Pay your taxes indicates manage your duties like an adult. Mind your business implies stop becoming engaged in turmoil that doesn't concern you and keep Will Smith's wife's name out your mouth is the clear lesson from the Oscar fiasco. But Dave added his own interpretation.
He claimed the underlying lesson Eddie was delivering was quit acting and start living truthfully. The reason Will felt obligated to defend Jada was because his whole public character was predicated on being her defender. If he'd been living an actual life instead than acting a character, he could have taken the joke very differently, maybe laughed it off, maybe handled it discreetly later, but certainly not with violence on live air, then tied it back to his personal experience.
He spoke about how Comedy Central wanted him to be a particular sort of comic, to play a certain character, to portray a certain version of himself that would sell more DVDs and earn greater ratings. And when he resisted, when he attempted to be real, they sought to destroy him. They labeled him insane, claimed he was on drugs and circulated reports that he'd suffered a mental breakdown.
The similarity to Will was evident. Both guys had been acting for Hollywood, but Dave had the fortitude to walk away before it ruined him. Will didn't, and now everyone was witnessing the repercussions.
Everybody calls me crazy, you know. I mean, you're hearing on the news things like he's gone crazy, which uh it never sounded that doesn't sound right, you know? Well, you know, maybe I know stuff people don't want me to talk about, so they oh, we're going to people believe, so they'll call me crazy.
But it was a weird thing to get called crazy. At first, it was scary and then now I feel like it's liberating. Like I feel free, like I can just say what I want to, do what I want.
They already call me crazy. I can't hold myself accountable for these things. I'm crazy.
I came I came couldn't control myself. Yeah. Yeah.
What was was there was there a I mean uh what was the reason that you went to Africa? Was there a reason that you decided to go to Africa? Well, there are a few reasons, but I mean, you know, if you a black dude trying to hide Africa is a good thing.
Jim and Dave's common understanding. Now, here's when the team up truly solidifies. Jim Carrey and Dave Chappelle have never done a project together.
They've seldom even been shot in the same room. But in the months after the Oscar event, both men began saying surprisingly similar things about Will Smith and Hollywood's dysfunction. In a podcast interview in late 2022, Jim spoke about how Hollywood produces monsters by prioritizing performance above sincerity.
He stated, "The industry tells people, be this character we've created for you, and will make you rich and famous beyond your wildest dreams, but the cost is your genuine self, your original identity, your connection to reality. " Around the same time, Dave was giving interviews advertising his Netflix special, and he said virtually the exact same thing. He spoke about how the entertainment business wants you to be a product, not a person.
And the more successful you get, the harder it is to recall who you truly are. Underneath all the performance, both men separately were identifying the same sickness. Hollywood had transformed Will Smith into a product.
And that product had been performing for so long that it couldn't withstand a moment of true human weakness or humiliation. Don't get me wrong, you know, Jim Carrey is a great character and I was lucky to get the part. But I don't think of that as me anymore.
You don't ever not at all? No, not really. No.
Uh, I used to be a guy who was experiencing the world and now I feel like the world and the universe experiencing a guy. The Avatar hypothesis goes further. Jim's avatar idea about Will Smith became even more pertinent when Jada Pinket Smith began publicizing her biography worthy in October 2023 because that's when she disclosed something that stunned everyone.
She and Will have been separated since 2016. Let it settle in for a second, guys. When Will slapped Chris Rock in March 2022, he and Jada hadn't been together as a married couple in any formal sense for 6 years.
6 years. The iconic Red Table Talk episode when Jada described her connection with August Alcena. That occurred throughout their separation, even though they acted like they were going through it together.
This discovery confirmed Jim's avatar idea fully, right? Willn't defending his wife at the Oscars. He was protecting the image of being Jada's husband, the persona he'd been playing for the public.
The Avatar had become more real to him than reality itself. Dave Chappelle addressed this during a stand-up act in late 2023. He added, "The Jada discovery was the worst aspect of the entire affair since it meant Will had been lying to everyone, including himself, for years.
You just feel like it ain't really nobody nobody's business. " But yeah, but now Black Twitter has claimed it as they business. But you know, I I think um you need to say clearly what happened as far as what you and I decided we were going to take our space and what happened.
An entanglement. Yes. Yes.
A relationship. Yes. It was a relationship.
Now in the process Mhm. And you and I were also going through a process of healing in a much different manner. I would definitely say we did.
And it all started with, you know, me wanting to help his health, his mental state, cuz for me that was the thing when I when um when OG first came around, he was he was really sick. Sick. He was really really sick.
Yeah. And the outpouring for him from our family was uh initially about his health. Yeah.
And I mean we found you know to and from there you know Yeah. And we decided I was done with your ex. Yeah.
You kicked me to the curb. I was done with you. Yeah.
We Marriages have that though. Marriages have that. We decided that we were going to go figure out how to make yourself happy and I'll figure out how to make myself happy.
I really felt like we could be over. And then what did you do, Jada? Well, you know, I think from there, you know, as time went on with August, launched into an interaction.
What do you feel like um you were looking for? Mhm. it had been and it was I think that has a lot which is another thing that I had to learn to break in this cycle of just that idea of needing to fix and being drawn whe it's your health or whether it's your addictions there's something about fixing people Mhm.
versus and taught me that cuz I wasn't sure I was ever going to speak to you again. I know. I know.
Yeah. like the fact that I'm speaking to you again is a is a miracle. Um I would agree.
There's just certain things that you have to go through and it's like and I wish I do. I wish that wasn't the case. I sure wish it could be all magic and miracles.
Yeah. you gotta go, you know, and I'm just happy there a real power in the just knowing somebody's riding with you no matter what. You can't know that until you go through until through some stuff.
You know, I don't want to go through this no more. I'm going to get you back first. I think you I think we're good on that.
Okay. Okay. That might that's probably true, you know.
Um and I don't think it's about No, for me it is. Um, I'll give you that petty if that's what you want. Um, but you know, I will definitely say, you know, 25 years in counting, we die together.
Bad marriage for life. Will was so driven to performing the part of Jada's loyal husband that he attacked someone to preserve the image, even though the marriage had been ended for years. Hollywood's selective accountability.
Both Jim and Dave have also pointed out the selective nature of Hollywood's responsibility. So, what do you think, gang? Did Jim Carrey and Dave Chappelle go too far, or did they uncover something that needed to be said?
Is Will Smith capable of true redemption, or is his career irrevocably damaged? And most importantly, what does this say us about Hollywood and our own involvement in building the system that shattered him? Drp your ideas in the comments below.
