When looking at a reference results set, users have the possibility to create a knowledge graph of up to 150 references. This is done by clicking on the knowledge graph button here on top. The knowledge graph consists of nodes and edges.
Nodes represent the references, the organizations, authors contained in the results set. As well, the substances and concepts that are indexed in those references. Edges represent the connections between those nodes.
On the left side of the knowledge graph is a drawer that can be opened and closed. When open, the drawer displays the knowledge graph filters. Knowledge graph filters operate the same as filters for reference results set, but they are limited to those references that are contained in the graph.
At the top of the knowledge graph, there is the key with color coded information types. This way you can recognize references in the blue nodes, authors as the yellow nodes. You can see them highlighted, and you can toggle this button to decide to display or hide it in the graph.
Concepts are found in orange, substances are green, and organizations are recognized as the pink nodes. You can move the graph by dragging it in and dropping it. Zoom in with the scrolling button and out.
Or use these buttons here: plus and minus as well as the reset button to go back to the main view. You can also move each node individually to gain more clarity. Mousing over a substance will display its connections to the other information types and clicking the substance s will display a pop up with a structure image and the CAS registry number that you can click to access the detail page for the substance.
Mousing over reference will in the same way display the connections with the other information types, and when clicking on that reference, a pop up with the title and author publication information will appear and clicking on the title opens the detail page for the reference. You can click on Expand data for options to expand the concepts or the substances specific to that reference. Zoom in to see the additional information that now are linked to that reference.
In this case, additional substances. You can also search the graph using the search box here where you can enter a term and then click on the magnifying lens to find matching information types. In this case, for example, we've isolated number of substances linked to eugenol.
And we can see the related connections as well. The knowledge graph enables researchers to quickly and interactively view the connectivity and shared indexing of references. For example, researchers can quickly visualize and answer basic questions like what organizations are working together in an area of research?
Who are the most prolific authors, and do they have coauthors with which they regularly publish? What substances and concepts are the most highly indexed in this area of research? You can use the knowledge graph to gain an understanding of the competitive landscape before starting a research project.
In this example, we have generated a knowledge graph from a reference answer set pertaining to patents in the following domain. The use of the natural product carvacrol in cosmetic or personal care products. The organization filter already informs me on the various actors in the field When applying a filter, a new knowledge graph is loaded that will keep on either selected element.
I can already decide to hide the organization to gain more clarity, and in green I can see the substances that are most used in this research. Can be also interesting to look at concepts. Concepts are a part of our manual indexation process and that will help you understand what's the mean focus of the publication.
It's interesting in that case to see the concepts of essential oil, cosmetic fragrance products are there, but also smaller ones such as hair dyes dentifrices, and mouthwashes is an interesting one, too. I can mouse over there and see to how many publications it's linked. Now, we could also look into an organization and the various authors involved with that research.
Let's first reset, apply another filter, and we're going to keep just authors. It's nice to see that various naming of Unilever group have been grouped together. Now we could expand with the substances and with the concepts.
In that case, surfactants comes up as well as personal deodorant. With the knowledge graph, you can analyze your reference answers set in an interactive way that allows you to visualize the various components of it, and it will reveal unseen connections between them.
