is using chat GPT to help your writing the same thing as using a calculator to help you do math I'm Dan Willingham I'm a professor who studies human learning I think the analogy doesn't really hold because the mental process that you are offloading and getting help with on a digital device is different for math than it is for writing in math if you've gotten to the point where you're really good at say long division the procedure you're doing is the same one every time the numbers don't matter and you're always going to execute it the
same way and you're executing it the same way the calculator would there's no reason not to have the calculator do it that is not true for writing for writing the content always matters you're going to do it differently depending on the content and the process actually matters to the outcome in other words writing helps sharpen your thinking as you're thinking about how am I going to make this clear to my reader how am I going to organize my thoughts your thoughts are actually changing and that's part of the learning process so there's a lot more
to say about chat GPT but I think the analogy doesn't work
