on the left we have the RTX 570 glitching out because of its lack of vram it would usually just crash but this was the best I could get it to do when running Indiana Jones in the great circle at 4K Supreme with dlss quality which on the right we see the RTX 4090 handling at 139 FPS average during this difficult jungle scene absolutely cruising through with no issue and that's because we see the vram usage uh slightly over 12 GB here uh because the 4090 seems to be more powerful than a 5070 well why would
I even put these up against each other well let's go ahead and watch nvidia's CEO Jensen Wang tell us exactly to do this so here we go RTX 570 490 performance at 549 okay so 490 performance at 549 and he does say it's with the power of AI impossible without artificial intelligence impossible without the Four Tops four ter Ops of AI tensor cores okay now throughout the rest of this entire presentation to be clear he never really explains although later on on uh separate websites and announcements to media and things like that certain performance charts
were given where it made it more clear that they were relying on comparing multiframe generation performance against non- multiframe gen uh performance to make this claim but in this official presentation which was looks like an hour and a half Long YouTube video not the whole thing was him talking this was it this was the information we got about the RTX 507s performance now uh this isn't really a normal review of the 5070 on launch day because tomorrow we are going to get amd's competitors 970 and 970 XD and it makes it feel kind of silly
to give a normal review to the 5070 today so I was thinking about what should I cover in the meantime since review embargo lefted well nvidia's CEO has given me the idea of how about we really do investigate this claim and I will give it the benefit of the doubt does the increased AI features or workload uh make it actually give 4090 level performance well let's examine what we're looking at here again the game would usually crash at these settings but when I did get it to run we saw the massive weird visual glitching that
we're seeing on the left hand side uh and so would you consider this uh 4090 performance no and is the AI going to help it make up for the fact that it has half the vram of the 4090 in the situation no meaning can it match the 490s performance in this scenario using the power of AI and the answer is no so this is not the case that the 5070 is as performant as a 4090 now interestingly I was able to get one run if I turned off dlss to Not Crash until right after this
little like 30 second snippet it did end up crashing after this but here we are now getting um 4K Supreme without dlss where the 490 can deliver 105 FPS and 570 hits 43 with even worse situation going on in the 1% lows again due to its lack of vram so we have identified at least one thing that the 5070 just can't make up for it doesn't have as much vram so in some sense it's not as powerful also my fat head probably doesn't need to be blocking most of the screen I'll pop off over here
now if we do go down to 1440p Supreme settings I do want to be clear that we are now within the vram buffer and the 5070 does f here it's at 97 FPS 490 hits 155 which is 60% faster and you know if we weren't right on the vram uh borderline we might be able to kick on some multiframe gen but honestly we're pretty close here and there's other scenes in the game where these settings can go beyond 12 GB of vram but this is the kind of situation that I believe uh Nvidia was talking
about where we could enable x 4 frame generation instead oftimes 2 two frame generation so what if we take this head on kind of pause here for a second and decide is this uh fair to call this the 5070 matching the 4090 performance with the power of AI okay so the frame rate numbers when we're comparing the uh times 4 mode versus the most frame generation the 4090 is I'm not even sure if it's not capable of doing times 4 mode if Nvidia wanted to allow it I but if we just take their word for
it and say the 490 can't do it it's not just an artificial software lock which I'm not sure is the case but anyway uh then we're hitting about the same frame rates uh although the uh 4090 is actually 5% faster here it is roughly the same frame rate but notice that he was unclear what performance means here it does not say it matches it has the same frames per second as the 4090 cuz that might technically be true but saying it performs the same is completely untrue because even if we are delivering the same frames
per second because we have the same frames per second because we're generating more frames it doesn't mean the experience is the same now this is something that doesn't show up in bar graphs like the ones that uh Nvidia then did publish to their website after this presentation uh where uh they showed performance with multiframe gen versus not multiframe gen and didn't Factor give any sort of avat on why that might not be an equivalent experience but I'm running uh nvidia's own software overlay here which monitors latency so while the they are delivering about the same
performance here as measured in frames per second they're not delivering the same performance as measured in responsiveness at this Freeze Frame the averages change a little bit as you go throughout the uh The Benchmark run but we're currently seeing roughly 70 milliseconds of latency uh for this on the 57 7 and about 38 milliseconds of latency for the 4090 that is a massively different feel to aiming a mouse now different people will have different uh perceptions of that for some people 70 milliseconds of input latency will be acceptable but that doesn't change a fact that
38 milliseconds of latency is massively better and will feel more responsive not only that the lower your base frame rate is when you're generating frames from the worse the generated frames end up looking because there's a larger gap between them now the cyberpunk uh Benchmark run here the built-in Benchmark that we're using here doesn't move very quickly it has these really slow camera pans so it's actually giving frame generation a pretty easy job to work with so in this footage it looks reasonably okay I have a separate video talking about dlss 4 multiframe generation and
showing time for mode operating from a base frame rate of around 30 frames per second to hit around 120 and show some quicker movement and there is very very very apparent breakup in the image it is absolutely not providing the same image quality here so even if it has the same number of frames they do not look as good in fast motion and they do not feel as good so this is not 4090 performance it's just not so uh anyway so if we want to look at what's going on behind the scenes here what if
we turn frame generation off so this is 4K RT overdrive mode using dlss performance with the new Transformer model this was the Baseline performance we had before kicking on frame gen in the previous screen uh here you can see that the 5070 is only a able uh to average 38 FPS on this Benchmark pass whereas the 4090 can hit 72 FPS giving it an 89% Advantage so what we're seeing here is that the 4090 is very playable at 4K RT overdrive dlss performance mode which with the new Transformer model looks pretty great I do like
dlss 4 especially the new upscaling uh component of it a lot more than I'm excited about the multiframe Gen component that's not nice to have uh but again 72 FPS we have a good reasonable playable responsiveness and then you can kick on frame gen the 5070 is not reaching an acceptable level of performance from which to then generate frames and have anything like the experience that you're having on the 4090 but what if we drop down to 1440p well if we go down to 1440p RT overdrive mode uh dlss quality with the new Transformer model
the 5070 hits 48 fps it's not a great experience you could play the game this way I would certainly want to be having at least 60 FPS if I'm playing a first-person shooter Style game uh on I know it's not the most fast-paced one but but using a mouse and the 4090 here is hitting 88 FPS which I would uh I like that if I can get 80 to 90 FPS in a single player game I'm very happy with the experience so here we're saying if you don't want to use frame generation because it does
have some image quality disadvantages and you just would rather turn it off the 4090 is very good for 1440p path tracing with only dlss quality needed whereas the 5070 is not giving you anything like the same type of experience here and now if we jump for jump forward and then kick on frame generation again hey look actually here we have the case where in the time 4 mode versus time 2 mode both gpus average 152 FPS so if you just want to leave it at that sure that is 4090 performance if you're literally only measuring
the frame the number of frames regardless of their quality or their responsiveness output to the screen and that's the only thing you consider performance to be which again in the announcement they didn't clarify what they meant by that um but notice once again that if you actually look at the latency figures that we have here um the latency numbers are in fact quite different we're seeing often around 55 to 60 milliseconds of latency for the 5070 and in the low 30 milliseconds of latency range on the 4090 this is a completely different experience and once
again the 4090 is offering an OB objectively measurably better and different experience than the 5070 is uh what if we go ahead and try out 1080p RT overdrive mode and at 1080p resolution I'd probably prefer not to use upscaling so what kind of experience do we get on the 5070 about 41 FPS on the 4090 79 FPS so again the 4090 is offering a good native resolution 1080p I don't know why you're buying 4090 for 1080p but let's say you did um uh offering you a good experience no upscaling or frame generation required whereas the
5070 is not so there's that now honestly this is the main point of the video but since I was already comparing these side by side let's go ahead and run a I'll run it through my entire Benchmark Suite anyway so we can get an idea of how these gpus stack up across a wide variety of games because actually I have another Point what if you are playing a competitive multiplayer game these are games where increasing the latency is the exact opposite of what you're trying to do and when you're trying to get more frames on
your screen you're generally not just chasing a higher frame rate number for increased motion fluidity you're doing it for a competitive advantage in latency so this is a case where you would not want to use frame generation and with that being the case the 490 is offering 75% better performance here 178 FPS versus 102 and this is not a case where you using frame generation makes competitive sense in a competitive game so once again claiming that these are offering the same performance is objectively misleading and I would argue uh at least very close to a
lie what I would consider a lie although legally probably doesn't qualify as one uh if one were to try to sue over it um anyway uh what if we jump into some other titles here we've got 4K epic RT dlss performance mode uh in Silent Hill 2 the 490 is offering 94 FPS the 570 is offering 63 if we don't use frame generation and by the way in this game I actually played this game on a 4090 I tried using frame generation and I decided to turn it off because it looks bad in the menu
system and in some actual uh scenes during gameplay so I found it distracting and it had good enough performance that I didn't need any frame generation so I kept it turned off in this game and so the 490 is offering me 49% better experience not the same performance uh the 14 uh Silent Hill 2 at 1440p Epic settings with Ray tracing is 83 versus 50 the 4090 is 66% faster and if we kick on dlss quality the 490 is now hitting 108 FPS and the 570 is hitting 75 again not a game where I really
like using frame generation uh if we turn off Ray tracing 4K epic settings Silent Hill 2 uh we're seeing 4090 hitting 61 FPS so you could easily get around 60 FPS native no frame generation or upscaling needed at all and yet the 570 is hitting 37 FPS here so you will have to decrease your image quality uh to try to match the performance of the 4090 uh if we go to 1440p Epic settings it's 101 FPS versus 61 um in this case the 4090 is 66% faster and it's offering a high refresh rate experience without
the need for any upscaling or frame generation Technologies uh in Final Fantasy 16 at 4K Ultra we see the 4090 once again able to deliver over 60 FPS without any need for upscaling or frame generation whereas the 5070 is hitting 35 FPS this is an 89% Advantage for the 490 and if we look at the vram usage it's possible that the 57 is being uh held back by spilling over 12 gab vram buffer if we use dlss quality frame rates jump to 54 and 93 respectively so the 5070 is still not breaking 60 FPS here
and the 4090 offering a nice high refresh rate experience uh if we go to 1440p at ultra settings the 5070 is able to average 61 FPS and the 490 is able to do 103 so if you don't want to use uh dlss or frame generation in this game which by the way I don't really love dlss in this game you might need to use it but it's not it doesn't look better than native here uh it's a much better experience on the 4090 ghost of sushima 4K very high settings uh the 4090 again does not
need any dlss or frame generation to get a high refresh rate native 4K experience at 92 FPS average average here giving it an 88% advantage over the 5070 which is only hitting 59 frames per second uh if we go ahead and jump to dlss Quality uh now the 570 is giving a decent experience at 81 but the 490 is certainly a much higher refresh rate experience at uh 136 giving it a 68% Advantage uh if we go to 1440p resolution the 5070 does do a nice job at 87 FPS and the 4090 does a much
better job at 149 FPS and again I at 1440p I'd rather not turn on upscaling or frame generation if I'm already able to hit 1 15 FPS without it it's likely somebody on like 144 uh refresh Hertz monitor is already capped out at their monitor's Max refresh rate there's no reason to degrade the image quality or increase latency or anything if you're on the 4090 whereas on the 5070 you might need to sorry if you hear beeping in the background my wife is cooking I think some uh timer went off anyway I'm looking forward to
lunch let's wrap up the video though God of War Ragnarok at 4K Ultra 98 FPS versus 56 so again the 4090 able to deliver a native 4K High refresh rate experience without any need to degrade the image quality uh via upscaling or frame generation whereas the 5070 is under 60 FPS here using dlss quality the 5070 does give a good experience at 80 FPS whereas the 4090 is likely like I said capping out a lot of people's monitors 4K 120 or 4K 144 uh for a high-end 4K monitor is pretty common so here again the
5070 would uh to catch up needing to use multiframe gen or something like that to try to get there whereas the 4090 doesn't need to do that and it's offering a better experience 1440p Ultra the 4090 is able to natively max out a lot of people's monitor refresh rate with no need for upscaling or frame generation at 149 FPS giving a 69 ni% advantage over the 5070 which is hitting 88 FPS not that 88 FPS is bad but is by no means the same performance as a 4090 uh in hellblade 2 Sena Saga we see
the 4090 able to average over 60 FPS at 62 at Native 4K resolution whereas the 570 is only hitting 33 FPS and by the way if you have a native 4k monitor and you feel like the 5070 looks kind of blurry here and weird uh a little more aliasing than there should be especially if you look in the distance I agree I've seen this on all of my 50 Series cards in this game I did email Nvidia a few days ago to ask about this to inform them of it but I did not get any
kind of a reply they're probably busy during reviews and uh had that tagged kind of low on their priority list I'm sure but look at the tree branches here the 4090 literally looks better at the same settings and yes they're using the same driver they're using the same uh 50 Series review driver anyway uh the uh if we go to dlss Quality that does clean clean up the image uh which is nice so at least uh if you use dlss you don't have to deal with the uh incorrect aliasing kind of uh situation we were
seeing um at the native TSR uh Unreal Engine 5 uh you know a AA solution that we saw in the 50 Series but anyway the 4090 here is now hitting 96 FPS nice high refresh rate experience whereas the 570 is still not quite as powerful as the 4090 was at Native resolution uh at 1440p high settings again look at the tree branches on the left hand side and and little details they're they're Alias and unstable the 50 Series is not running this game correctly and again this happening on all of my 50 Series cards on
their review drivers and even using the same review drivers on my 40 series and 30 series cards I've not seen the same issue anyway uh again the 4090 70% faster here High refresh rate experience and the 5070 is a little short of 60 FPS if we go to Horizon forbidden West uh 4K very high settings the 4090 once again offers a high refresh rate experience at Native 4K resolution with absolutely no need to use uh upscaling or frame generation to to feel good on a high refresh rate display the 570 is offering under 6 FPS
here at 52 490 is 83% faster uh at 4K very high dlss quality the 490 is now taking advantage of like 120 or 144 Herz 4K display at 12 28 FPS average whereas the 55070 is only hitting 75 sure that's fine but it's by no means the same performance as the 4090 which does not need to use frame generation in this game and again frame generation does generally introduce artifacts especially in quick motion and combat and things like that often times it's fine but you don't need it on the 4090 and on the 5070 to
match its performance you would at 1440p very high settings we're seeing the 49069 nice per faster at 150 FPS versus 89 on the 5070 89 is fine but the 4090 is ma probably maxing out a lot of people's 1440p displays 144 Herz is common 165 HZ is common you're right in that ballpark with absolutely zero need for upscaling or frame generation and the 50 7 is doing fine but nowhere near equal performance uh and that's all the tests that I ran here so this is my video I don't know if you guys are going to
interpret this as Petty but again um the real 5070 review needs to be in the context of its comp competing gpus in exactly the same price class launching tomorrow as of the time of me uh you know posting this video on the 5070 launch date cuz again so anyway uh that's uh where we're at with that so uh did Nvidia lie I mean honestly it's kind of hard to say they didn't 570 490 performance at 549 490 performance at 549 is that what we just saw in our independent testing impossible without artificial intelligence impossible without
the Four Tops four ter Ops of of AI tensor cores impossible without the G7 memories okay so 5070 490 performance $549 and here's the whole family starting from 570 so again he repeats it multiple times uh in the video uh 4090 performance 549 490 performance 549 490 performance 549 mentions AI tops and it it requ Ires AI but once again what did we see in this video there are situations where the 4090 having more vram uh lets it do things that the 5070 cannot even if you were going to say that multiframe generation counts as
performance so in this case feels like it's just a Flatout lie although again they didn't specify what performance meant and that's how they would probably get away with this legally in any kind of a false advertisement sense but from from a consumer uh perspective again uh even if you allow multiframe generation versus non multiframe generation this is not the same performance we have 70 MCS of latency versus 37 milliseconds of latency so the 490 is more responsive despite the same number of frames being showed on the display and also those frames are not created equal
uh this as a math teacher reminds me of people trying to just like combine unlike terms it's like I've got 3 x's and five y's so obviously that's eight uh no it's not it's like I've seen signs of like a small town with their population their feet above sea level and then they combine them and listed as the total it's like some kind of random meme I saw online that's what it's feeling like here if you're trying to say these are performance yes you can find a number that does show up the same on both
uh frames presented to the display but those frames are not equal they're not as responsive and there are competitive game type situations where you would not use generation uh to get a competitive Advantage so it is not going to be as good at at that I was trying to jump to Call of Duty smoothly as we went there man I ran a lot of cyberpunk tests didn't I so there's situations where you wouldn't want to use the frame generation uh where where that performance doesn't really count there are situations where you're out of vram these
are not the same thing um anyway wait for a more direct 5070 versus its actual competition uh coming soon uh the thing I want to mention though is I hate that this is what we had to deal with um as uh you know uh Tech media covering this because I really like dss4 especially the upscaler the multiframe Gen is kind of cool too but I I'm getting frustrated because I see a lot of comments um on my channel saying like how annoying it is that Tech YouTubers like me but they're kind of complaining about all
of us in General reacted so negatively to nvidia's announcement and dlss multiframe generation and the reason is we're having to correct for what is at best an extremely misleading marketing claim and um honestly very very close to a lie but probably not meeting the legal definition for false advertisement so we're having to correct for that if Nvidia had just been honest about what they had and then talked about how good the new Transformer upscaler looks and how that can effectively let you use more aggressive upscaling than you would use before because I'll be honest I
didn't like using performance mode upscaling before we got the new Transformer model and honestly RT overdrive was a bit Hit or Miss due to the uh lackluster Ray reconstruction but with the new Transformer model for both of those Now using dlss performance uh inrt overdrive with the new Ray reconstruction on the 4090 now makes the 4090 better than it used used to be this is exciting for anyone with an RTX GPU and yet they had to go with these misleading marketing claims so then the reaction to the 50 Series and the um dlss 4 in
general has to be more negative because we're trying to correct misleading statements instead of spending time actually celebrating the parts that are cool anyway uh stay tuned for more videos there'll be a 5070 comparison against all of the relevant competition on the channel Channel as well as all these other gpus and everything I hope all of you have an excellent day
