ladies and gentlemen whether or not you follow chess closely at all you probably at this point know the names Magnus Carlson and Hans Neiman due to the ongoing chess cheating scandal drama whatever you want to call it here at the end of 2022 and this is not another video milking that subject well kind of it is but not in the way you would think a couple of my subscribers sent me a video by Mike Boyd he's a very cool and successful YouTuber who I believe is from the UK and Mike built a chess cheating device very relevant to our Scandal and in this video I'm going to do something I've never done before I'm actually just gonna watch this video react to it point out a few things have a laugh and we're gonna have a great time normally I analyze chess games or something like that but listen a little variety of content ever hurt anybody and by the way one more thing this dude's YouTube channel is sick like in another world or in another lifetime I would love a YouTube channel like this where I do a couple of different variety things have a very high quality type of video for all of you let me know in the comments by the way like if I made a separate YouTube channel just to make you crack up and laugh and do something cool would you watch or am I just your chest guy or am I funny enough to be beyond the chess guy anyway let me know uh here's Mike's video all right there we go chess the most popular game for more than a thousand years has gone relatively speaking without drama okay until now oh here's a recap September 2022 during the prestigious sinkfield cup the current reigning world champion and arguably the greatest chess player of all time Magnus Carlson lost a game of chess nothing unusual here chess tournaments consist of many games losses are common except Magnus was playing as white white moves first remember and in the upper echelons of Chess this matters Magnus doesn't wait why is the King on a dark Square all right Mike I don't know if this is your stock footage but whoever stock footage this is is about to get a very unpleasant note from me the king I'm just I'm just kidding listen I'm J it's a joke well no I mean it's the king is not supposed to be in a dark square but me being mad about it is a joke but I'm always curious you know a lot of you watching are chess fans so whenever there's like a little like chess movie moment or something I'm always paying attention to that Blues is white in fact to put into perspective how unusual this defeat was here's a list of all this is crazy who have beaten Magnus using the black pieces yeah this is great ever that that list is not quite accurate I'm not going to keep pausing by the way we're gonna I'm just gonna there's a lot of things to comment on and I don't want to talk over it uh that list is classical chess games like more people have beaten Magnus with black just not in fast game uh not in not in slow games rather a lot of people beat them in faster time controls but so far so good and I like the fact that Mike doesn't like say that the cheating scandal came out of this one game the Victor was at the time relatively unknown Grandmaster Hans Neiman a 19 year old American chess Prodigy whose rating although had been rising quickly was much lower than magnus's but upsets do happen and the tournament continued that was until Magnus abruptly withdrew from the tournament leaving this cryptic tweet as his only explanation of why not another speaker if I speak I am in in big trouble in big trouble and I don't want to be in big trouble to make matters worse Hans has actually admitted to online cheating and his youth so I created in random games on trust. com now chess. com say he has cheered it's a different Mark oh yeah they castled the queen the oh my God the king is on the light square that King is on a dark square and the queen yo Mike I again I don't think this is MrBoyd's stock footage uh but uh if it is you know regardless of whose stock footage it is they invented a rule of Chess so kudos to them I never knew the queen could Castle how is that even possible King's got a pointy head speculation should continue right and so this is the whole point of the video right like this is the whole point of the video um also is bizarre misspelled bizarre has two Z's in it right b-i-z-z-a-r-e it doesn't have two r's anyway um yeah so right like the only way you can cheat in chess is to get information from somewhere there is information of the best move it has to be relayed to you so one of the things that people were hypothesizing was there were certain devices that you can use that would vibrate in Morse code or in other sort of coded language and you could bypass security at chess tournaments by inserting that stuff into your ear or in this case into the morse code and Joe Rogan talked about it briefly yeah's reputation is in tatters and his career may be irreparably damaged he's filed a one million dollar lawsuit in the meantime and it may be irreparably damaged he's filed a one million dollar loss 100 million and it should be 400 million time of writing you might get a million has been brought forward I'll let you Ponder the ethics of the situation but the idea of using a sex toy to beat the world's greatest at chess has captivated the Chess World and the general public could it be done how would it work and where can I get one well let's find out uh great intro great intro I was busting his chops but seriously very solid intro um an existing device to suit my needs yeah he's gonna buy a thing here might have to wow it seemed like it would be simple enough to just hack the remote of this Wireless plug to quickly turn on and off to transmit chess moves easy except this one's fancy it has all kinds of different modes pulsing at 10 different speeds different intensities need to make my own controller I'll harvest the battery and vibration motor for now all right Electronics montage [Music] I would love it if he told me what was going on here because I I'm just watching this like the way you watch animals at a zoo okay here's the deal we have two arduinos a receiver and a transmitter and a little bit of code on the computer that sends a signal to this Arduino so when I plug it in it vibrates and it I've just set it to vibrate a little pulse oh my God so you can imagine that that would translate to some sort of chess move however this monstrosity of wires and solder doesn't fit into the original device so it's a problem how is it supposed to go up your butt so we need a bigger container this one should do the trick I hold out space for the components foreign oh my God this tiny phone vibration motor is quieter and much smaller all right here it is oh dear the super glue uh I thought the super glue would be seamless but that is not the case but look it's a switch uh can you hear that so it works oh my God it's not very uh inviting oh my God it's functionally working no way now that I have a tiny computer that can control a vibration more some code I need to write a program that based on the position of all the pieces calculates the power yeah this is really hard I mean for the untrained person like I don't know anything about coding um so maybe those of you watching can let me know in the comments just how hard it is to actually program a chess computer uh but uh the the this stuff seems scientific like science fiction move only the user interface with a chessboard on screen so you can click and move pieces around it needs to consider all the nuanced rules of Chess like castling and on pass on and it needs to interface with stockfish 15 for the strongest chest and Else by the way um can anyone tell me if this like overlay of random formulas actually has anything to do with chess or like to me this is like wow this is super cool but if this is just super generic mathematical like I see isn't this some like function stuff like I don't I don't remember anything this is some like formula to calculator and it needs to interface with stockfish 15 for the strongest chest analysis right modifying this Python program to talk to the Arduino was simple and amazingly only required four lines of code wow call of Open Source doesn't mean the program uses stockfish as the engine and relays the move over a serial connection to the transmitter on receiving the move the bot Arduino converts the string into a series of pulses that convey the move to make I'm glossing over this and it took me like 14 hours to debug this Arduino code but it works okay here's how this is supposed to work I've got the PC running the python code with stockfished calculating the ideal move and I've got a transmitter this sends the signal to the plug wirelessly which then pulses to indicate which move to make so if I play I'm playing against the computer here if I play the move E4 then the computer will probably play E5 yes it has it'll give me two pieces of information it'll Buzz the square that the piece is currently on and the square that it wants to go on it just converts the numbers to letters so a is one B is two c is three for example and then the the numbers will just stay as they are so it'll pulse twice for B and three times four three so if you got to go to h8 it's going to pulse 16 times if you gotta go you might go over here [Music] [Laughter] so it does filed and rank then file then Rank and I'll repeat that every 30 seconds by the way just so you are all aware uh and we many this has been discussed in many places already when it comes to cheating if a titled player really wanted to cheat with a covert vibrating device they would not need it to vibrate that many times so just so you're all aware like and this is a starting position but if there was like 20 pieces on the board and it was very complicated just telling the person like the file literally like if if I if I knew the best move was on the C file I would be able to find it that's it that's really all you need so you don't even need it to vibrate eight times you know you you you could even set it to like one is Pawn to you know anytime it vibrates two times it's night or bishop and you say oh that's not enough information there's so many variances Knights and Bishops a title player can figure it out they need a lot less hints because they already have that default prerequisite of being very very strong so it's really quiet but still Audible I felt the vibration motor was still too loud interestingly I was able to fix this in software by reducing the pulse time to just 15 milliseconds this means that the motor doesn't even have enough time to spin up fully super quiet so with the reduced pulse duration of 15 milliseconds it is buzzing right now it is essentially completely silent and you can just feel it if this was somewhere a little more sensitive you would definitely feel it and you definitely wouldn't hear it so I think we're pretty much good to go God it looks hideous right time to put in the test the question is can this device that's made by a programming and electronics noob in just a couple of days actually be used to cheat at chess over the board to find out we've brought in an unaware chess for shioso this Michael Groves and he's good at chess here's a radio wow Mikey Groves have I ever played this dude that'd be crazy wait let me look this up dude is really high rated wow 20 he's 2300 at Blitz no I've never played him that's incredible get out of here wow off 2300 my ring even on chess.

com on the laptop for analysis layer Michael didn't seem to think that was strange so no suspicion so far that's a good move oh that is a good move yeah because the bishop can't take back when the bishop takes the Knight as the Knight would go here wow I was receiving the moves perfectly and as expected stockfest played the ideal opening with no suspicion aroused so far it's good everything you've done so far is absolutely solid you've got a good position here I need to undermine somehow yeah I think white is already much better yeah because white has a nice control here white has very nice control of the light squares Knight C3 yep G3 but you played this game better than the last game yeah I think so yeah right you've cleaned it as well good move things went on but yet you see in this game he's got the cheating device on so he's playing very solidly he's not rushing to like do anything crazy in the position whereas in the last game uh like from the opening like I mean all his pieces were sort of scattered he immediately lost the pawn and he lost the second Pawn by pushing just on the random side of the board but like as this goes on I mean he's just playing Super solid like notice everything is a position super solid correct development uh and in you know in some ways this is like the argument people make when they want to cheat because they're like well I can learn from the engine not really you kind of need a middleman like myself to explain things to you but yeah I'm not happy at all no no I'm really not happy about it it's the best move here no wow wow why it's just not doing anything this is intense as heck [Music] yeah no I am getting a little bit skeptical now that this is a big cheating scandal exercise yeah like see like look look you see what what the computer just made Mike do he he did like a stupid looking one move attack on The Rook but he repositioned his Bishop immediately when it was attacked to this Square it used to be here but now it's here which is a slight micro Improvement of the position and The Rook has been pushed this way not defending the king anymore and basically there's nothing really here there's not really much of a threat here so these like tiny repositioning moves are very computer-ish not to mention that he's 600 hasn't made a mistakes in there and you might be wondering why the computer deemed that an inaccuracy game review on a certain depth might be you know wrong wow [Music] amazingly it wasn't until move 27 where he actually dropped any material just a single Pawn Yeah [Music] it just goes back yeah yeah so control look at how controlled white is playing this is too much I'm feeling like I'm the one getting the lesson here okay but King G2 oh wow [Music] eventually however Michael began to suspect something was up right this is boo you're definitely cheating or something because you're Holding On by afraid which mean I'm holding on my thread there's little tactics that each time they just don't work oh my God see that doesn't feel right it just doesn't feel right yeah so that's a really good move what this is a good move yeah I don't yeah he's like yeah oh we hit the queen [Music] wait hold on hold on wait I'm sorry playback guys look at this wait the bishop can take the Rook the queen can't take anything because I mean this is defended the computer thinks that instead of taking the Rook you'd play Rook takes Pawn any human here plays the move Bishop takes rook in a heartbeat and they just move your king out of check but the computer is like nope Free Pawn I don't need the Rook this Rook is bad these pieces are bad I'm just gonna win by pushing these pawns that's insane yeah now you trade queens and that's it why does your stuff trades Rooks and white is just up three pawns look at this bishop takes white is about 600 rapid rate and you're doing pretty well this game who's gonna walk your Spike being in a much worse position Michael played on waiting for a mistake that never came yep so I could understand so what can you do I'm just a kid you're cheating after on Twitter [Music] wow E5 King C5 look how active White's King is and then the pawns go and the bishop just would you resign in a tournament yeah you should we should just resign now yeah well played oh my god did you have a bit of outside assistant there you go this is a choice [Music] yeah that's been a range of emotions right there but this is why I didn't get the first game you blundered your H3 Pawn wow cool and what is she just said in the moves yeah yeah so she was just recording the game and python just so there we have it Michael knew I was cheating but not because he could hear the device or he figured out how we were doing it my play was simply too strong for my reading but what I feel I've shown in this video is that it's easy to make a silent concealable cheat device with minimal electronics and coding knowledge and it can be used to beat really high level players that Hans cheat and did Magnus and chess. com handle the situation properly that's not for me to say all I can tell you is the meme is real and it can be done yeah that's crazy um perhaps more should saying it's not my job to watch these videos of people dissecting hans's games with data analysis and being like Oh that's not my job and in fact data scientists experts can argue back and forth about whether that stuff is even like legitimate or not in the methods but this was cool this was cool and it's a problem and what I've been saying in every single one of my update videos or recap videos about some new development in the Hans and Magnus case is that I don't think like I think anti-cheating protocols and chess are like a decade behind maybe the major chess websites are up to date with Statistics and how to like identify statistical anomalies in chess games but in terms of implementing this at chess tournaments I think we are doing like a very bad job um you know I'm not gonna name specifics but like when I was a chess teacher uh you know even at a very young age I've uh not me at a young age but some people at a young age like competitors at a young age like I've heard stories of young kids go you know walking uh while their games are going on in the hallway of a chess tournament just cheating like talking to each other helping each other like that's cheating too and you know parents have to like follow these kids and uh and and intervene and and you know yell at them and uh try to get them in trouble try to report them so cheating on like a tiny level is is is prevalent everywhere but like once you add the whole concept of external devices and electronic devices and people trying to like hide them in a bathroom stall it it's quite it's quite wild and you see this like this is insane I really would have liked to see if this would pass a metal detector check that's the only thing missing Maybe which you know can't really fault Mike uh but like if this could pass a wand you know those wands that they use the chess clubs I mean that's just ridiculous like literally it doesn't have to even go anywhere you just put it in your armpit and that's it right so yeah very very dangerous very crazy situation uh and um well we'll see we'll see what happens in the world of Chess well people have to take their shoes off will they have to go through some sort of extra scanning let's put it this way 99 of Chess venues don't have a budget to implement high-level Security checks they just don't all right they got to pay the players they got to pay for the venue they got to pay prizes they got to pay staff I mean to invest 25k into some super fancy anti-cheat might not be possible and they have to so I don't know maybe this will just be reserved for
