you're watching the Jake Kaminski YouTube channel I'm Jake Kaminski and today we're going to talk about rest set up in our tuning series basically there's a bunch of different types of rests available out there and each rest is different for different types of applications there's some some with very heavy wires some that you can set up that actually our drop aways and they move out of the way after you shoot there's plastic ones there's solid ones there's ones that are adjustable there's lots of different ones so I'm gonna break down today the main differences of
the types of rests that there is and also how to mount them on your bow how to adjust them properly and how I would modify some of them to work better for you so the different types of arrow rests are as follows basically you have some that bolt on to your bow from the other side of where your plunger goes through that's what the slot is for its for your plunger to go through the this and clamp against the bow or with another bolt to lock it in place and then your plunger can be put
in and out here so this one bolts on your bow and this has a heavy wire this one is a stick on with some double-sided tape that was there and it still has a heavy wire then there's a plastic stick on rest that uses different size thickness double sided tape and then you have metal ones that are stick on but you have some that are solid that do not adjust and some that have adjustments on them and the ability to adjust them both in and out and up and down so the first type of rest
that I want to talk about is this Bolton style this one works really good for heavy arrows well okay so I guess it's kind of a little complicated these heavy-duty Bolton ones are gonna be your ideal rest for shooting bear bow or traditional especially when you start ringg walking because if this is the arrow and we normally with feet a shoot split finger like this but if you start shooting three below and then start string crawling a whole lot when you go to release the the string the string is conforming to your fingers at full
draw so the arrow is slightly forward of your fingers but then when you let go the string wants to do this and snap from down here to up here and wants to then push the arrow like this and when that happens the arrow itself on the rest as it's going by the rest pushes down very hard on the wire and really will Bend these arrow these rests down so with this style rest and definitely this type of rest it will break the wire off or fatigue it so much that it eventually it will break Plus
with bear bow I believe they get a bit better performance from the arrow pushing down hard and then launching off of the rest that is part of the bear bows setup that I'm not quite familiar with but I want to learn one day because I do want to shoot barebone ventually big heavy-duty ones are adjustable there's not only adjustments how far in and out the block sits but also how far in and out the wire is and you can see here I can adjust the wire in or adjust the wire out depending on my preference
I'll show you how to set the rest wire depth here shortly with all of them but anyway you've got your heavy wire that you have a whole lot of adjustment in this block moves in different amounts and again I'll show you how it mounts on the bow in a little bit but this one right here has opposing magnets there's a magnet here and there's a magnet in this actual pivot block so you can set it up where the rest will want to push away and keep the rest outward like the majority of wrists are but
you can also set it up as a drop away where it stays out when you're at full draw and then when you release it drops in and out of the way the only way that this setup works is when there is a hook on the end of this to kind of keep the rest out up on the arrow so if there's an arrow sitting here like this it needs a hook to keep it from dropping in I modified this one in particular by cutting the tip off so that way it is not set up they're
not supposed to be set up as a drop away all you got to do is basically just loosen this set screw and then try to get this thing out I'll have to get a pair of pliers but essentially you take this magnet out you turn it around so now the poles are opposing instead of opposite each other and then it will push the rest outward instead of sucking it inward festa also has the ability to be slid in and out in different distances you can see there's some marring here and here this is marring from
a 5/16 24 bolt that I use to mount this rest solidly and they in the front plunger hole so that way I could still take my plunger on and off when I was traveling and not risk my plunger being damaged by the TSA so there this is an advantage you can also take this completely off and they have another block that bolts onto here and if you're brave you could drill and tap your riser and mount this thing by itself without this on there as well there is an option next is another AE product this
is the champion too those were a free flight elites if I remember correctly this is a stick on but again it uses a heavy rest a heavy wire it's still a little heavy for my preference for shooting you know FITA or olympic-style or whatever it is called these days but again this one is adjustable you can adjust how far in or out the wire sits with a set screw you can adjust this set screw and adjust the height of it as well I don't believe this one you can reverse the magnet on I could be
wrong but I don't believe so also because it's being stuck on I would still caution use of this with bare Bo because there is so much force going down it might be okay but I'm really not sure and I'm not qualified to are an expert in bareboat to be to recommend this one those I can because I've seen everybody use next is your basic point super rest it's a stick on piece of plastic that you take these foam backed double sided tape you get this free and every both at you order from height so it's
the cheapest one out there because it's free and these double-sided tapes come in different thicknesses so that way you can put them on on different type of bows and I'll show you how to use those in the future and I'm going to show you how to modify this is if I were to go and shoot this actually for real now we're to the non adjustable stick on rests this one sticks completely on the surface of the riser on the face where the plunger hole is and where the plunger comes through whereas this one stuck on
to the riser but it wrapped around the backside of the riser like that so that one's different but anyway this is a stoma brand it's just a very small wire itself and this dot there that's a magnet that keeps the the wire itself out the only way you can adjust these is to stick them on in different heights or to bend the wire okay and last is the stick on adjustable arrow wrist so it's the same exact thing as a regular stick on with a thin wire this one's probably even thinner than that one and
instead of one V one magnet holding this open there's actually two so you'll see one there and one there two small ones and it uses a V block to actually consistently align it which I'm a big fan of and that's why I actually use this rest this one is made by Shibuya and is completely adjustable so all you got to do is loosen this one set screw and you have the in-and-out adjustment as well as height adjustment that you can make use for different thickness arrows and stuff I particularly like this arrow rest because it
had such an easy vertical adjustment so when I was doing my fine-tuning which we will get into later video I could move the rest up and down and not worry about affecting a whole lot because it is such a simple rest the wire is very very thin which is nice and the beautiful thing about this particular arrest is Shibuya makes replacement parts so this one you can get a replaced wire for the wire arm they make pre-cut out VHB very high bond double-sided tape that you just stick on it's all pre-cut which makes things way
easier and it's super nice to have that as an option but this is definitely my rest of it I'm not going to show you how to mount the shibuya one on because it's very very simple all you do is it has to be level to the bow this way so you'll see how the edges of this and this line up with the edge of my shelf and the plunger comes out of the hole in the center of the hole of the actual plate itself all the adjustment that you need to do can be done with
moving the wire up and down so it's not super critical as to where you put this rest on your bone all right so I'm going to show you how to mount the rest of these on this bow you can take so this one's very simple if the plunger was screwed into the bow it simply just sticks on like this you again make this parallel to the to the shelf you don't want it angled way up because then the rest is definitely not in line with the arrow it's pointing in an upward fashion which you don't
want a ton of upward point so again you just basically stick it on right there and then adjust the in and out as I'll show you how I like to see it this type is a little different you have to unscrew your plunger first and then you will take the rest itself and put it on the bow and then like I used to do and enjoy in preferred whether I use a button cap screw here and threaded it in the front to lock the rest in place permanently so that way I did not have to
you take it off or I didn't lose my position when I took it off so I would lock it down and then your plunger can go through and now you can adjust it to be in the correct position so the first adjustment that you want to do on this style of rest is to make it so this wire folds flat against the riser completely out of the way when the arrow is trying to move by if in case the fletching pushes it or put or wants to move it out of the way so you got
to loosen up this set screw first and then this block slides in and out and you have markings here to figure that out but if I move it in all the way it won't move in or remove it that way that way all the way it won't move in if I move it out now it will fold in there's different screws on the inside here to get into a different amounts of adjustment so I'm just going to move it all the way out and lock it down there you can adjust the height by loosening up
this set screw here and then pushing the wire further up inside this recess and that will raise the whole wire up or down this one is set up for fatter arrows for like a 23 15 somewhere in there so that the arrow will sit in the center of the plunger while at full draw and then you can adjust your in and out to adjust and support the arrow in the correct way which again I'm going to show you how to do that later on this non adjustable type you have to stick it on in the
height that you want it because you can't adjust it up or down you know you have a lot of movement front to back as well so I prefer to have the contact where the arrow is vertically sitting on the rest and supported vertically to be the same distance front and rear that the plunger is so I don't want it too far forward because then the arrow is being supportive way up here instead of at the plunger and what that's doing is it's making two different contact points for the arrow that's being supported by the bow
so that means that when you make a left to right a mistake versus an up-and-down mistake it's going to affect the dit arrow differently because you're pushing on the arrow in different locations relative to the whole arrow as a whole so to me what that's going to do is if you're making mistakes it may not be very consistent or very forgiving because you're supporting it from two different areas try to support it from one central last and by far the cheapest is the white super rest now most people that use this at a high level
will modify the rest I'll show you how to modify it here in a second but let's first mount it on our bow so there's two different options of thickness of the foam pads the thin one is really for youth based bows that have a very fat and thick window here because if I had the thin one on which is basically nothing you can see let's see if I can hold it for you you can see that the rest hook itself is inside of the plunger and you cannot see it won't hook on to the arrow
but by the way this plunger is set up for roughly the correct center shot it's not sticking out too far but if I take this double-sided tape with the thicker foam pad and stick it on so now I have the super rest with the foam thick foam pad stuck on and I'm going to stick it on where the plunger hole is roughly in the center of the hole and then try to make the rest level and you'll notice I set it on there but I didn't push down because now I can adjust it move it
and move it around and actually I'm going to grab an x10 and make sure the height is correct so it's a little low because you can't see the plunger so I'm going to unstick it move it up yep so now that's pretty close to in the center so I'm gonna stick it down right there all right so now look at what it did with the thick foam pad see how the hook is sticking out past the plunger so that way the arrow can hook on to the rest and be supported by the plunger without having
to pull the rest out a whole lot to modify this rest this little flapper here that little flapper there helps support the arrow but we don't left and right but we don't need that because we have a plunger so the first thing to do is cut this off everybody that shoots this rest at a high level cuts this off so it's no longer in the way and then most people this one is damaged it's been sitting in a box for forever so you can see you get it to focus you can see that it's bent
inwards if it was not bent inwards and not messed up I would take this and cut this completely the hook completely off so and most most level most people at the highest level because like i said these rests actually i hadn't said this yet but these rests have set world records multiple multiple times even recently and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them if you prepare them correctly so there's absolutely nothing wrong with these rests these rests have sent set multiple world records and everybody that uses them basically everybody that uses them definitely cuts this off
and then most people will cut most of the hook off you can see how i left just a little bit of the hook on there that's to help just support the arrow just a little bit cuz this one again is bent but basically if you're going to use the Hoyt super rest you have to use the thick foam pad you got to cut that off and I would highly suggest cutting the hook off okay so now how do I adjust the Shibuya x' to correct or all arrow rests excuse me to support my arrow correctly
so there's going to be pretty difficult because it's with a camera but the tip of this rest does not come out past the side of the arrow it's really only supporting the arrow just out the tip of the tip of the rest is just out past where the arrow is sitting on the rest itself so I'm going to try to get you a good shot oh you can see how the tip itself is not doing the support the actual wire there right there see how there's a little bit of daylight where the tip extends past
the center of the arrow rest but it's just a tiny tiny amount if you view it from directly behind you'll see that the the tip of the rest is not exposed past the left side of that about covers all that there is to really know about different types of air arrests for recurve bows you now know the difference between what a bear bow one is and what an olympic-style one is you know the reason that I believe that the thinner wired ones are better for shooting performance in general is if you do have any sort
of arrow contact on the rest which optimally you shouldn't and if you have the correct tune you probably won't but if for whatever problem for whatever reason you do have contact that thinner lighter arrow rest if a vein hits it on its way by or if some part of the arrow touches it because it is so light it's just gonna move out of the way and not affect the arrow as much as if that wire was very very heavy and the heavier something is the more resistance it has to movement so you really want to
try to use the thing that is the lightest and thinnest possible one problem that I do have with the Shibuya one because this V block is in the center where the plunger will be as you start going thicker and thicker with the arrows especially like 23 12 and up like 27 12 is you absolutely cannot shoot with this rest but I have had 23 12 push the plunger in so much because the arrow I set it up on the weaker side pushed it in so much that the center of the arrow was contacting this block
right there and that was throwing everything off it was really throwing me for a loop luckily I had somebody check it on high-speed and I could see it touching so then I went to that bolt on AE free flight elite cut the end of the wire off and shot it and it was just fine so you also have to do you I'll do you do also have to take into consideration the type of arrow that you're going to shoot not just the style of shooting you do use as well if you have any other questions
