hello friends and welcome back to the channel this video what I'm going to be talking about is conclusions if you haven't already please check out my previous videos that I just recorded on introductions and body paragraphs so this last part of an essay is going to be probably the shortest but also one of the most important and that is how do i structure a conclusion like the like the other parts of the essay I separate this into three parts I do this largely just sort of to keep things easy to explain and like I said
this is probably the easiest way to think about you're the easiest of the three to do largely because of in the conclusion what you are going to be doing is wrapping things up that you've already done so a few rules of thumb that you want to include one is not to add anything new in the conclusion so sometimes for instance I will see students who will who will have a couple good reasons and they'll say alright well we need to reduce greenhouse emissions because of this that the other thing and the other thing alright and
they make their point and in their very last point they bring in some completely different topic or some new piece of evidence that that that they're not really a they hadn't really explored before you want to see if you can avoid that the conclusion is not a time for you to be adding new stuff it's a time for you to be reflecting on the importance of the stuff you already have my dogs are going to be barking because my neighbors are doing yard work right now so I'm gonna see if we can get around that
as best we can alright so with conclusions you want to be thinking about reflecting on the importance of what you have already said so the first two parts of the conclusion are pretty simple and that is reiterate your whoa reiterate our thesis statement reiterate is a statement reiterate your thesis statement I'm gonna have to reiterate at point between parks we'll see how long this lasts so you're going to reiterate your thesis statement what that means is tell your reader your thesis again this is particularly important to make sure that you are still making the same
point that you did in the front of the essay as you are in the back of the essay all right so let's say that you that your paper is about how if your thesis was let's say Congress should ban use of coal power because it is inefficient add for the environment and dangerous let's just say that that was my thesis and as we're reminding as I'm reminding you so I've got a subject I've got an opinion about it never got a handle on the why in this case hold power I think Congress in it all
right so what you're gonna have to do is reiterate your thesis statements so if this is where you started then you're gonna need us to end on it to make sure that you're making the same point if you didn't make all these points make sure that you that you meet the front in the front in the back of the paper that they match they're like a mirror they rhyme mirrors don't rhyme songs right you get the idea the next thing you need to do about us the next thing you need to do is remind your
reader of your main points now it is important that this is a reminder not a rehash sometimes what I will do is I will see a student's paper and at the very end of their paper it's almost like they just wrote their paper a second time in this case your reader doesn't need you to re-explain everything they just need to give you a little bit of a reminder all right and so I'm assuming if if you wrote this paper on coal power you're probably I have a whole paragraph on inefficiency a whole paragraph on environmental
damage and a whole paragraph on the dangers of coal mining if this is the case then they don't need you to go through all that again what they do need is just sort of a hey remember these are the reasons so you make sure that that you said what you said originally and then you go back and you explain the reasoning for it now what is the last part sometimes well people will get through this and they're like dude that was two sentences what else do I do in my conclusion and this is the most
important thing that you need to do so what happened why does this matter so what who cares why are you writing at this you know that you're writing about this because I sign an essay that you're gonna have to write so I know the real reason is because I told you to but more importantly you're gonna have to pretend that there's a reason I'm just just full of bad jokes today you're gonna have to pretend that there's a real reason that your reader needs to read this what is it that they're gonna take away from
this now sometimes this is easier said than done all right in this case Congress should ban use of coal power it's inefficient bad for the environment and dangerous okay those seem like good reasons to do something but what you're going to face is that not every topic is that reason going to be readily available you can example from our first timed writing so in our first timed writing the topic is education and in this case I'll do one of these prompts you answer the following question what mindset do you think you have and why and
how did one of kitty horns or Rebecca Cox of students demonstrate either a growth or fixed mindset so at the end of the day what you're going to be doing is what you're going to be doing is you're gonna reiterate your thesis statement which is gonna be something like I have a growth mindset maybe heard a student had a fixed mindset remind your reader of your main points so I had a growth mindset because I learned how to do math and I think that Joshua had a fixed mindset because he was goofing off all the
time the end well why does that matter why does it matter that these students learn these certain ways what could potentially be important about that right if you don't know think of something make something up decide something what would be important about learning about people learning or analyzing how people learn so maybe in this case you would do something for us so what factor would be something like you know my story the story of Katie Hurons students show that it's possible for everyone to be able to learn alright this is a little bit trite but
you're trying to make this statement to say okay think about my topic and now beyond the fact that I had a right to write a paper about it why should anybody else care or for instance I might say such a thing if I was doing the second prompt which is about Claude Steele's work I could say ultimately my story and Miguel's story we're just two small examples of the way that racism and stereotypes affect the way people learn regardless of how just we feel our society is millions of people are told or just believe they
are inanimate which is caused us to continue to strive or a better society again it's a little trite and I'm just coming up with this off the top of my head but in this case what you have is an example of something were of me trying to attempt all right beyond the fact that I just had to write a paper about something why does this matter to my reader why should anybody else care all right in this case I'm saying hey sure I wrote this essay about just two people but I wanted to talk about
why this is an important topic in general so in some a conclusion you reiterate your thesis statement you remind your audience of your main points and then you explain so what who cares that is how you write a conclusion I'll see you in the next video
