hey guys welcome to lingua Marina I know a lot of you guys who are watching this channel I have this problem I forget words when I speak English and today I'm going to share why it happens and how I manage that because I live in the United States I work in English I pitch my companies to investors I meet amazing people and we communicate in English this happens all the time and I kind of understand why it's happening so let's dive into it number one uh what happens to me all the time I think this is the most common problem that I have now I watch a lot of TV shows in English I talk to a lot of native speakers and from time to time they would use a phrase that I really like and I understand its meaning and the next time I'm like let me use it in a conversation it sounds so proficient it's so well spoken now um okay how do I use it let's take one of my favorite ad8 amm for example I don't know why um I consider it my favorite to feel under the weather to feel under the weather means to feel sick and imagine a situation I'm talking to a native speaker they use this phrase I'm like oh yeah I know what it means the next time I'm in a conversation and I want to use it but I can't really use it you know why because it became a part of my passive vocabulary and by passive I mean I've heard it I understand it but I've never used it in my whole life so when I'm in a conversation and we're going to talk about other reasons that affect this when I'm in a conversation I might be nervous I might think about something else I might be focused on something else so it's really hard for my brain to remember something that's in my passive vocabulary and then what I normally do after a conversation I try to remember this feeling like oh my God I wanted to use this phrase I couldn't really use it I say I'm feeling I'm feeling I eventually I would just say I feel sick today uh because I forget under the weather but then I come back home and I sit down and I just Google how people use this phrase and I try to use it in my stories on Instagram write a post with it just say something let's look at the example the day after the big party Marina had to call in sick saying she was feeling under the weather okay and then I will say it two more times and then the next time I will just use this phrase because now it is kind of moving to my active vocabulary I will use it once I will use it twice the next time I use it I don't even realize that it just becomes part of my natural language so this is reason number one right passive versus active vocabulary by the way if you realize that you need more practice and that you don't have a speaking partner to practice English we have a speaking Club at lingua trip that you can join and start chatting with people people from all over the world the way it works is that every week you'll get an email with upcoming events you choose the events that you like maybe you want business related communication maybe you just want lifestyle topics and what you do you join the ones that you like it's a zoom call for 40 to 60 Minutes you'll be joined by other students and you will practice English if you click a link below you will see the upcoming events please join practice English and start using those words that are in your passive vocabul move them to your active vocabulary check out the link down below second even if a phrase or a word is in your active vocabulary right now you might be too stressed out and this is where I remind myself and that happens to me I meet such amazing people and sometimes when I talk to them I start thinking oh my God what do they think about me now am I dressed properly like all of the thoughts they just start flooding my brain and what I tell myself all the time Marina nobody cares nobody thinks about you only you think about yourself and people think about themselves so just smile be nice be friendly be polite stop stressing out in conversations with strangers especially with native speakers I know I'm not a native speaker sometimes people be like they start talking to me and I tell them I'm not a native speaker and if they start complimenting me on my English saying like oh you sound like a native speaker and once they say it I feel the pressure of sounding just perfect and this is when the stress starts coming in because my brain is like okay they just thought I was a native speaker I I have to speak like a ative speaker so this is uh this is really stressful and if you think that you have to sound like a native speaker if you were talking to a native speaker that's not true uh you just sound like yourself and be nice number three I mentioned this already but very often in a conversation we think about something else don't do it okay I'm going to tell you this theory that I've just learned I just did a management training and they explain something to us that I really liked there are people who are 1. 2 there are people who are 1. 0 and there are people who are 0.
8 when I say a person is 0. 8 that means that let's talk about a conversation in a conversation they're kind of paying attention but they're somewhere else they're thinking about their to-do list their relationships whatever people 1. 0 people 1.
0 in a conversation they'll be actively listening and replying people who are 1. 2 and in a conversation will be actively listening replying smiling and making sure their partner in this conversation feels really good when you're in a conversation and you're thinking about something else you are 0. 8 so every time you do something ask yourself am I 0.
8 right now or am I 1. 2 or am I 1. 0 after this Management training I decided that I will only do things that I'm super passionate about if it's 1.
2 if it's 1. 0 then I do it if I feel like I'm doing something but I don't really like it that means I will be 0. 8 in that task and that means a no for me and now let's get back to forgetting words so basically if you're in a conversation and you forget words because you're thinking about something else ask yourself a question do I have to be in this conversation do I want to be here or do I just end this party and walk away since I had my kids I started doing this very often I'm at a party or I'm attending an event and I realize it's I'm not having fun I could be at home with my kids so I just leave try that really helps you cuz we only live one life and we kind of have to be 1.
