piling up losses and occupying the bottom ranks of the standings however 1946 would bring a dramatic change both for the team and for Blanda football coach Paul Bear Bryant was hired as the new head coach of the wild cats and his arrival would be a turning point years later Bland would comment that upon meeting Bryant he felt almost Divine about the coach as if he knew he would be the key to changing the team's fate and he was right under Bryant's leadership the team underwent a remarkable transformation in 1945 they were at the bottom of
the standings but over the next 3 years they lost only three games establishing themselves as a respectable team Blanda in turn grew alongside the team Rising quickly through the depth chart by 1947 in 1948 he was already leading the Wildcats in passing and excelling in total offense especially in 1948 during his final two seasons at the University of Kentucky George Blanda demonstrated exceptional performance in college football he threw for an impressive 1,400 yards and scored 12 touchdowns these numbers were remarkable for the time and highlighted his emerging Talent as a quarterback his passing accuracy and
Leadership on the field caught the attention of many but surprisingly blanded did not believe he would pursue a professional playing career back then professional football was not as lucrative or glamorous as it is today and many college players did not see a viable future in the NFL however Blanda Talent did not go unnoticed by George halis the legendary owner and coach of the Chicago Bears to Blanda surprise halice saw potential in the Young quarterback in the 1949 NFL draft Bland was selected as the 119th overall pick in the 12th round this unexpected opportunity marked the
beginning of his professional football Journey something he hadn't anticipated but which was about to Define his career and Legacy in football upon joining the Chicago Bears Blanda found himself on a team already filled with Talent at the quarterback position the Bears boasted the iconic Sid Luckman one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history and Johnny lud jaac the 1947 High Trophy winner and an emerging star in the league blando was seen as a young Prospect in development someone who could learn and grow under the tutelage of these veterans despite his inexperience as a professional quarterback
his versatility as a kicker and punter added significant value to the Bears roster in his rookie season Blanda primarily contributed on special teams he converted seven of 15 field goal attempts and served as the kickoff specialist also sharing punting Duty his accuracy and Power in kicking were impressive for a player at the start of his career however as the third string quarterback his opportunities to play the primary position were limited he was behind Johnny Lu jaac the starter and Sid Luckman who also served as his mentor offering guidance and experience in The Following Season 1950
blanda's career took an unexpected turn George halis decided to trade the Young quarterback to the Baltimore Colts who were preparing for their first NFL season after the dissolution of the All-America Football Conference the Colts had endured three difficult seasons in the All-America Football Conference winning only 10 of 40 games despite their modest record they joined the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers as the three teams from the All-America Football Conference that would merge with the NFL the trade involved five Bears players including Blanda who were exchanged for several Colts players to protect his team's
interests halice added a crucial stipulation to the trade agreement the Colts were not permitted to trade any of these players within the National Conference this conference included in addition to the Bears and Colts teams like the Los Angeles Rams San Francisco 49ers New York Yanks Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers halis wanted to ensure that his former players would not bolster rival teams thereby preserving the Bears competitiveness in the conference with the former Bears players integrated into the Colts roster the next preseason game was held in Wisconsin as a charity event against the Green Bay
Packers with so many former Chicago players on the Colts facing the Packers the game took on the feel of an extension of the historic Bears Packers rivalry fans were eager to see how these players would perform against a familiar opponent however Blanda did not play in this game the Colts opted to start rookie Adrien Burke the second overall pick in the 1950 draft Burke was seen as a promising talent and the team wanted to assess his potential in real game situations unfortunately for the Colts the strategy didn't pay off and they suffered a loss with
the preseason over the team had to prepare for the challenges of the regular season for the Colts week one of the regular season presented a formable challenge they were set to face the Washington Redskins who had remained undefeated in the preseason and were favored by a 14-point margin once again Adrien Burke was chosen as the starting quarterback while Blanda remained the third string backup although Blanda had more experience than the rookie Burke he was still adapting to his new team and the Colt system during the game against the Redskins Blanda did not get a chance
to play and the Colts suffered another defeat increasing pressure on the team and raising questions about the effectiveness of their offensive strategy after the loss rumors began circulating that one of the Colts three quarterbacks might be cut the speculation was quickly confirmed when the Colts coach released Blanda 2 days after the game against the Redskins it was an Abrupt decision that left Blanda without a team just months after arriving in Baltimore despite this setback blanda's Talent did not go unnoticed by other teams two franchises expressed immediate interest the Pittsburgh Steelers who were looking for a
reliable kicker and the Green Bay Packers the Packers who had finished the previous season with the second worst record in the league saw Blanda as a potential solution to their problems their two main quarterbacks had been injured in the week one game against the Detroit Lions meaning they urgently needed a capable replacement Additionally the Packers head coach Jean ronzani had a history with Blanda ronzani had been the Bears backfield coach before taking the helm in Green Bay this personal connection made Blanda in even more logical everything pointed to Blanda joining the Packers as soon as
the 24-hour waiver processing period was over however George halis was not willing to let his former player strengthen one of the Bear's biggest Rivals he reminded the Colts of the stipulation in the original trade that prohibited the players from being traded to other National Conference teams keeping this in mind the Colts withdrew Bland's waivers before the 24-hour period expired effectively reclaimed climing his rights the Colts then traded Blanda back to the Bears in exchange for $500 back in Chicago during the 1950 season and in the subsequent 1951 and 1952 Seasons George Blanda continued to struggle
to establish himself as the bear starting quarterback even after his return He was not given significant opportunities to play in his preferred position during this period head coach George halis sporadically used him as a linebacker a role completely different from the one Blanda had originally been hired for his statistics as a linebacker include one appearance in 1951 while as a kicker he managed to convert six of 17 field goal attempts during the same season however by the end of the 1952 season Blanda frustration began to overflow after four years of limited playing time and no
prospects for growth he became increasingly dissatisfied with his situation on the team and the lack of recognition from the Bears coach additionally he had not received a salary increase which further soured his mood tired of the situation Blanda considered an offer from the Canadian Football League where he almost signed with the Hamilton Tiger Cats however at the last moment halice offered Blanda a small raise convincing him to stay with the Chicago Bears for another season finally in 1953 Blanda received his long-awaited opportunity to become the Bears starting quarterback with renewed determination he seized the chance
and led the NFL in passing attempts throwing the ball 362 times and completing 169 of those passes he also threw for 14 touchdowns though he was intercepted 23 times resulting in a quarterback rating of 52.3 despite the interceptions it was a significant breakthrough for Blanda who was finally getting the recognition he had always sought however the 1954 seasons started disappointingly for both the Bears and Blanda he managed to throw 15 touchdown passes but also suffered 17 interceptions hampering the team's performance to make matters worse blando was injured in a week eight game against the Cleveland
Browns sidelining him for the rest of the season Bland's backup stepped in and won the final four games putting the Bears in a near playoff position from that point on Blanda lost his starting quarterback position and was relegated to kick and backup quarterback in the following years between 1955 and 1958 Blanda spent most of his time on the bench while Ed Brown took over as the starting quarterback during this period Bland was mainly used as a kicker where he successfully made 48 of 93 field goal attempts when he had the chance to play as a
backup quarterback he threw for a total of 982 yards recording 11 touchdowns but also 14 interceptions by this point his his NFL career seemed to be on the decline and with no prospects for a promising future in the league Blanda made the difficult decision to retire at the end of the 1958 season however his retirement would last only one year in 1960 a new opportunity arose with the creation of the American Football League a league that offered players a new platform to continue their careers one of the afl's founding teams the Houston Oilers was looking
for NFL Talent to strengthen its roster Bland's name came up among the potential recruits and the Oilers made him an offer to join the team as both a quarterback and kicker seeing the chance to resume his career Blanda accepted the invitation and moved to Texas where he began a new phase in his football Journey Blanda soon realized that the AFL with its emphasis on the passing game was a much better fit for his style of play during the 1960 season he completed 46.6% of his passes and threw for an impressive 2,413 yards for the first
time in his career he managed to throw more touchdown passes than interceptions demonstrating a level of maturity and control that he hadn't yet reached in the NFL additionally he converted 15 of 32 field goal attempts making him a standout on special teams under Bland's leadership the Houston Oilers performed excellently in the afl's inaugural season leading them to the League's championship game against the Los Angeles Chargers in this decisive game Blanda Shone brightly throwing for 301 yards and three touchdowns his dominant performance was crucial in the Oilers victory over the Chargers securing Houston's First AFL title
in 1961 George Bland was experiencing one of the best moments of his career that year he threw for an astounding 3,330 yard leading the AFL and setting an extra ordinary Benchmark he also accumulated 36 touchdowns cementing his position as one of the League's top quarterbacks however he also threw 22 interceptions but this did not overshadow his Brilliance gland's 36 touchdown passes stood as a league record for 23 years until Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino surpassed it in 1984 another highlight of the 1961 season was his quarterback rating reaching an impressive 91 3% one of the
best performances of his career in week 11 of that season Blanda had a historic performance throwing seven touchdown passes in a single game against the New York Titans this achievement placed him alongside for other quarterbacks who matched that record marking one of the most memorable moments of his career under his leadership the Houston Oilers had another outstanding year returning to the AFL championship game where they again faced the Los Angeles Charter ERS once more Blanda Shone on the field and was pivotal in the Oilers Victory securing their second consecutive title during the game he was

goals throughout the year during the season Blanda had two games where he threw for over 400 yard showing he still had a powerful arm and an undeniable ability to lead the Oilers offense under his leadership the Houston Oilers had their best campaign yet finishing the regular season with 11 wins and only three losses for the third consecutive time the team reached the AFL championship game this time however the opponent was the Dallas Texans in one of the most epic games in league history the game was so close that it was only decided after two overtimes
with the Texans emerging Victorious despite the loss Blanda had a solid performance throwing a touchdown pass converting two extra points and hitting a 31 yd field goal although the title eluded them in 1962 Blanda maintained a high level of play in the following Seasons however starting in 1963 the Oilers began to face challenges and failed to return to the playoffs for the next four years even so Blanda continued to be one of the most productive quarterbacks in the AFL in 19 1963 he led the league in passing yards for the second time throwing for 3,03
yards 24 touchdowns and 25 interceptions between 1963 and 1965 Blanda led the AFL in pass attempts and completions proving he was still a force to be reckoned with even though the team was no longer at its peak however by 1966 blanda's career began to show signs of decline he had more interceptions than touchdowns for the fifth consecutive season and his yardage dropped to 1,764 the lowest since his arrival with the Oilers with the team's performance also in Decline the Houston Oilers decided to release him in March 1967 believing that nearing 40 years old Blanda was
pasted his prime during his time with the Oilers George Blanda stood out as one of the great names in the AFL consistently ranking among the top players in categories like pass attempts completions yards and touchdowns however after being released it seemed his long and illustrious career had come to an end and he was on the verge of permanent retirement but Bland's life took an unexpected turn when a few months after his release from the Oilers he received a call from Al Davis the owner of the Raiders Against All Odds Davis offered Blanda a new opportunity
despite him being about to turn 40 many doubted Blanda could still play at a high level but this offer meant that his football Journey wasn't over despite his Advanced age George Blanda who was almost 40 years old received an unexpected offer from Al Davis owner of the Oakland Raiders Davis a Visionary in football wanted Blanda on his team not just as a player but as a key figure in the development of future talents Blanda would be the backup quarterback to Daryl L Monica and also serve as the team's kicker additionally Davis saw Blanda as a
leadership figure and the perfect Mentor for young Prospect one of whom would be the young Kenny Stabler who joined the Raiders in 1968 in his first season with the Raiders in 1967 Blanda primarily played as a kicker he converted 20 of 30 field goal attempts showing he still had a strong and accurate leg after so many years in the sport as a backup quarterback he had limited opportunities but managed to throw for 285 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions despite his reduced role he was an integral part of the team that reached the 1967
AFL final where they faced and defeated his former team the Houston Oilers in a victory that was particularly sweet for Blanda with the victory over the Houston Oilers in the AFL final the Raiders secured their place in the historic Super Bowl 2 where the best team between the two leagues the AFL and NFL would be decided expectations were high as the Raiders AFL champions would face the Legendary Green Bay Packers NFL champions and one of football's most iconic franchises this matchup was more than just a football game it was a battle between the two leagues
and many believed a Raiders win would demonstrate the afl's superiority over the NFL Al Davis had high hopes that his team could make history and win the national title over the mighty Packers which would also Mark a turning point in the afl's legitimacy as an elite League however despite all the Raiders talent and effort the Oakland team couldn't sustain the magic that had brought them to the Super Bowl the Packers dominated the game from start to finish showcasing their strength and experience in big games the defeat was decisive with the Packers emerging Victorious and making
it clear that the NFL was still the dominant league for Al Davis and his Raiders the dream of winning the first national title slipped away that day frustrating their efforts to prove the AFL was just as competitive as the NFL the the loss was especially tough for Davis who had always believed in the AFL superiority and wanted to prove it on the field against one of the NFL's best teams though the loss was bitter for the Raiders it didn't diminish the impact of veteran players like George Blanda who continued to be key figures in Oakland's
lineup in 1968 blanda's story with the Raiders followed a similar course he remained a reliable presence as a kicker converting 21 field goals throughout the season as a quarterback he threw for 522 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions the Raiders had another strong season and once again made it to the playoffs in the divisional round they easily defeated the Kansas City Chiefs but in the AFL final they were outdone by the New York Jets ending their season in disappointment the 1969 season brought more challenges for Blanda with L Monica playing at an extremely high
level and being named AFL MVP for the second time in three years Bland was rarely called upon to play as quarterback he threw for just 73 yards with two touchdowns and one interception however he remained a reliable kicker converting 20 of 37 field goals throughout the season the Raiders once again Advanced to the playoffs defeating the Houston Oilers in the divisional round but fell in the AFC Championship to the Kansas City Chiefs as the 1970 season began George Bland was about to turned 43 years old with L Monica playing at a high level and young
Kenny Stabler emerging as a promising backup quarterback the Raiders decided it might be time for Blanda to retire he was released from the team during the preseason signaling the end of a long an illustrious career however Al Davis reversed his decision and resigned Blanda for the regular season though Blanda didn't have a constant presence as a quarterback he gladly accepted the role of mentoring Stabler taking on the responsibility with enthusiasm this decision to keep Blanda on the team would become one of the most legendary moments of his career with the Raiders in week six during
a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Daryl L Monica suffered an injury that took him out of the game instead of turning to Young Stabler Raiders coach John Madden opted to put his reliable veteran George Blanda on the field Madden's decision was immediately rewarded Blanda Calley entered the game and through two touchdown passes in addition to kicking a crucial field goal leading the Raiders to a 31-4 victory over the Steelers the following week the Raiders faced the Kansas City Chiefs and once again Bland was called upon to play a decisive role with Oakland trailing late in
