We were doing a pilot for a network a lot of people didn't know about based on a movie that didn't have much success. So, people really thought real highly of where we were going to go with this show. Oh, why can't you people just leave me alone?
Because you are the Slayer. People kept telling me, "Don't worry, you'll get a real show next year. " Worked out okay for me.
Ah, Buffy, the early years. This was like our first big gallery shoot. Actually, I think technically it was our second gallery shoot because I think the first one was so bad they actually got rid of it and then we redid it um the second one.
This is the prom. I remember that. Which is one of my favorite episodes.
And we didn't get to get dressed up very often on Buffy. We were always like in the dirt and in the mud. So, I think we all were very excited to actually get cleaned up for once.
Buffy, you look awesome. So, do you. Everything cool?
Coolest. Double Dogs are history. We finished all 12 episodes before they ever aired.
So, we had no idea like if anybody was ever going to see this show. And I remember I was in North Carolina doing I Know What You Did Last Summer when it started airing and they didn't have the WB in Wilmington. Like because WB was not everywhere at the time.
And I would call Alice and I'd be like, "Is anybody watching this show? Like do we know? " Cuz I couldn't even see it uh where I was.
So she would have to like fill me in and tell me what was happening. Is there a problem, ma'am? Yeah, there's a problem.
David and I had such like a goofy like foolish, you know, we were not, there was nothing method about either of us. We were just, we still are when we get together. It's just a very goofy, silly relationship, which plays out entirely different on camera.
But maybe that's why. Maybe because we were able then to lose ourselves in those characters and nothing it never spilled over in that sense. Oh, graduation now.
That was crazy. Like, and I always tell this story, too, because people think of Torrance High, which is where Buffy was filmed, as the as the school where Sunnydale, right? But for me, it was West Beverly from 90210 because I was a huge 90210 fan.
So when I was like in the hallways I was like so where this picture was taken where we had our graduation uh I always think of this is where in the episode of 90210 where they were uh giving the yearbook awards and they had the big fight because Brenda said everyone just picks people who have been there the whole time. So yeah. So it's funny I I still to this day associate torrent high as West Beverly.
I know that seems very backwards. Christine Sutherland. Uh, couldn't ask for anyone better to play your mom.
Just the kindest. And Michelle, Michelle was on all my children at the same time as I was. So, I had known her and she was so talented.
Hadn't seen her in a few years. And my husband was preparing to do a movie where he was playing a baseball player. And they were practicing at a local high school that has a very good baseball team.
This little girl came up to me. She was like, "Oh my god, I don't know if you're going to remember me. " And it was, of course, I did.
It was Michelle. And she had heard that I was there watching Freddy. And so she had cut class to come visit me.
And I had known that the next season, it might have even been two seasons. I think it was the next season that they were bringing on this younger sister. And I was like, I have an idea.
She was a huge Buffy fan. So I brought her to the set, introduced her to everyone so that she would be in their heads. And by the time they started casting, they just kept going back to Michelle because I had sort of like planted that seed.
So that's how uh Little Dawn was born. Buffy, if you're going out, why don't you take your sister? Mom.
And Tony headed at the time was super famous for the coffee commercials. Come in. Thank you.
Will go blend be too good for your guest. Everyone knew him as the coffee guy. And the interesting thing about this scene in the set, there's a very big scene in the first episode where Giles finds Buffy and he basically tells her, "This is your destiny.
" And she says, "I don't want to do this. I I want to be normal. " Into each generation, a slayer is born.
One girl in all the world, a chosen one, one born with a strength, strength and skill to hunt the vampires, to stop the spread of their evil, blah blah blah. I've heard it. Okay.
I felt like I had such a better handle on the character and who she was and that I just was never happy with that scene. And I went to the producers and I said, "I know this is crazy, but is there any chance that we could reshoot that scene? " Like, "What are you talking about?
That was episode one. " And I said, "I know, but I just feel so much more confident in the character and the choices. " And so they figured out a way because the library was a set that we had all the time that they gave me basically an hour and it was like, "You can do what you want, but you got to get it in that hour.
" And we did it in two takes because by then I sort of I think had like a deeper understanding who and what should happen in that scene. And so the scene that's in that first episode is actually shot at the end. So this is uh the Ed Ed Sheeran's last big tour and Ed is a huge Buffy fan.
we've been friends for quite a few years and he was like when am I going to get to meet the other cast members and it was my daughter's birthday and my daughter's very very close with Seth and knows Emma pretty well too and so we all went to celebrate Charlotte's birthday at uh the Ed Sheeran concert and it was so cute because Seth and Emma were so excited to meet Ed but not as excited as Ed was to meet Seth and Emma. So it's always funny you never know who's going to be a big fan. Sometimes they surprise you.
I know you did last summer this was so exciting. Buffy came out and I tested for I Know What You did last summer. The same week the first episode of Buffy aired and got the job and within like two days was on the set in North Carolina and then was super happy to find out that Ryan was going to be in it because I'd known Ryan from soaps and Freddy actually was dating a girl at the time that I knew.
So I I didn't know him but I knew of him through her. We didn't really know each other very well and I was still working on Buffy at the time and needed to, you know, stay in shape and I was only 19 and then 20 and we were filming about an hour outside of Wilmington, North Carolina and there was one local gym and they wouldn't let me go because I wasn't 21 which was very confusing because they serve no alcohol. So, I had to drive an hour each way every day into Wilmington to go to the gym.
And one day I get this knock at my door and it was Freddy and he I was like, "Yes. " And he was said, "You know, I heard you going to Wilmington every day. I need to go in and get some stuff like from I don't even remember, but maybe Best Buy.
" And he's like, "Do you want me to drive you? " I was like, "Oh my god, that would be amazing. " Because I literally had just gotten my driver's license.
I grew up in New York City. Like I took a subway. I didn't drive.
And uh so he drove me and that was like the first time that we really hung out and it was so random because we didn't know each other that well but that's when we got to know each other and Love was like such a legend at that time. It was like party of five and she was also on um one of my favorite shows as a kid, kids incorporated. So I was very very excited to meet Love and this actually parade picture I love because this was my 20th birthday and uh they threw a parade in my honor for my birthday which is really nice of them.
I got a crown and everything. No, they didn't. It just happened to follow my birthday.
But I like to think it was a parade for my birthday. And then this was up in Santa Rosa. This was like the infamous car scene.
And I just remember it was so cold and I was so freaked out that Ryan and Freddy were going to have to go in the water because I was like, "It's too cold. They're going to get hypothermia. They're going to get sick.
" I was like very, very nervous about that. No, we'll call the police. We'll tell them the truth.
They'll believe us. It's manslaughter. And then this is um the reboot, which I was not supposed to be in.
Uh, spoiler alert, I'm dead. And uh I kept saying I'm I'm not going to be in it. I'm dead.
I'm dead. And my best friend Jennifer Kaitton Robinson wrote and directed it. And she was like, Sarah, you have to be in this movie.
And I'm like, but I'm dead. And she's like, I'm going to find a way. And I was out there visiting Freddy and she had this idea.
Um she ran it by me and Maddie and she was like, what if it's like this crazy dream sequence? You're the girl from the picture. I mean, I do have a name, Helen Shivers.
And we literally did it in the cover of night. Like, I came in under umbrellas. I couldn't leave the set that day because if anyone saw me dressed up like Helen.
Um, so it was really fun. So, we shot it while I was out there visiting the fam. Thanks, Paige.
This was like the coolest. So, while I was filming, I know what you did. I was home for maybe like a week in between when we filmed to North Carolina, we moved to Santa Rosa.
And I get this call that there's this role in Scream, too. And Scream, I mean, that was like the biggest movie of the moment. Like, it had just come out and Kevin Williamson, who wrote I Know What You Did also wrote Scream.
And I went in and I auditioned for West Craven and they called me like that night and was like, "You have the role. " And I I couldn't believe my luck. So, I went straight from I Know What You Did to This Movie and got to work with one of my friends from high school.
Rebecca and I also went to high school together. I think she was a senior when I was a freshman. She was way cool.
She had a boyfriend that went to college. That scene did not make the film. And they felt so badly about that that they wrote another scene for me.
And Josh Jackson, which is this scene, and they wanted to shoot it in LA while I was on Buffy. And it was the day that I was moving into my first house. I No one in my family had ever wrote a house.
I was so excited. And I wound up missing my moving day, but it was worth it. You can't blame real life violence on entertainment.
What? He said, "Yes, you can. Don't you don't you even watch the movie?
Hello. The murderer was wearing a ghost mask. Okay.
Just like in the movie, it's directly responsible. No, it's not. And then this was just so cool to be with Nev and to be with Courtney and to be with Jada.
Like, it was just so exciting. And Nev and I lived um across the street from each other at the time. And then Courtney I still see because Courtney is really close with Ed Sharon.
So, it all sort of like comes full circle. But Courtney was such a a mentor for me and an inspiration. I mean, obviously like all the work that she had done and she was on a hit television show and I had a lot of questions at the time.
I mean, I still ask her questions and she's just one of those women who was always there to support other women and happy to answer questions and help out. And she was the only one old enough in Atlanta to um have a rental car because we were all too young. So, she would also drive us places because none of us could rent a car.
I was not old enough to do anything for a very long time. I was the last and Buffy. I was the only one that wasn't 21.
And on Friday nights, if we ever finished early, everyone would go to a bar and I I couldn't go cuz I didn't didn't have a fake ID. Ah, cruel intentions. God, what a time.
So, I was desperate to be in this movie. I wanted to be in this movie in the worst way. And it's funny because I I came from soaps where I played a bad character.
And then, it's not a little known fact, it's a pretty well-known fact now. Uh, I was originally cast as Cordelia. And it took them a very long time to see me and consider me as Buffy.
And then they finally did. And now I was playing this heroine. And I wanted to be Catherine in this movie.
And everyone was like, "No, you should be Annette. Like that's what you play. Like you don't play the bad character.
Like what if people and people try to talk me out of it? " And I was so determined. I would find out where Roger Cumble was.
And I would like show up dressed like Catherine. Like I mean it like in this day and age it would probably be considered a stalker and probably would not that behavior would not be uh rewarded now. But back then, no one knew that was not right behavior.
And it was where I first, well, I knew Reys because Ryan and Reese were dating. I know what you did. So, I I got But this is where I really got to know her.
And we were just having um conversation last week. She is someone that I have known and gone through so much of life with and just she's such an inspiration for women. And she has really broken a lot of walls and barriers and ceilings, you know, for all of us.
And our lives wound up coming back around because our both of our youngest children were in preschool together and became best friends in preschool. And so it was like this crazy of like you go through all this like teen stuff and then all of a sudden as moms um and she's raised three incredible children and so it was great for me to have someone who had been through a lot of like I remember the first time she ever introduced me to Ava as a teenager and she said you know I think Ava was like maybe 15 and she said you know this is Sarah and um we made a movie together you know with your dad and she's like yeah I know Cruel Intentions I've seen it. I was like you've seen it?
I was like, "Wait, we have to show our kids that movie. " It was very funny. Um, yeah, this was the MTV Movie Awards.
And I remember when I was on Buffy, people were always really mad that Buffy didn't win awards. Like, we were never nominated for Emmys. I was nominated for a Golden Globe one year and that was it.
Fan awards always meant so much to me cuz like that's why we do what we do. And so to win like an MTV movie award was like such a highlight for me. Like that was, you know, thank you MTV.
This is great. Thanks for voting and thank you. And we won for best kiss and I won best actress that year and so it just was like a really fun night and I I um we had a few cocktails that night.
Never even gone to first base with a guy. Haven't you ever practiced on one of your girlfriends? The kissing scene was the audition scene and she was like like this very similar way that she just went for it in the audition.
I was like that's the seal. Um she's so unique in her way and you know life has not been easy for her and she's managed it with grace and dignity and you know this Cruel Intentions was like a really that was a special time and we're all so still to this day so proud of this movie and still all close to Roger and this was when we went to go see the Cruel Intentions musical for the first time. It was opening night of the Cruel Intentions musical which was really fun.
Oh my goodness, so many memories. Okay, this is all my children. Those of you who don't know what soap operas are, so anyone under the age of like maybe 27, they used to be on all day long.
And when I was a child, I would try to skip school so that I could stay home and watch my soaps or also my stories as they are known. I believe this is my first day uh ever on the soap and All My Children was the soap that I watched. So, it was very crazy to be my first day trying to get a job with the legendary Erica Kaine.
I think I already knew the big twist that I was her daughter. I think I knew from the beginning. I'm the little gift from God she never told you about.
And this was my very first ever daytime Emmys with Kelly Ripa. That was crazy. I'd never been to an award show like that before, so that was very overwhelming.
This was um the wedding Erica Kane marrying I want to say Dimmitri Martin I think. Oh fra he uh this is Rudolph Martin who played my love interest. Um this was in my vampire phase.
He had started early because I was white as a someone who had not seen the sun in a hundred years. And then years later Rudolph guest starred on Buffy as Drcula. I am Drcula.
Get out. Uh, this is Eva Laroo, who to this day is still one of my closest friends and neighbors. We just went to a concert actually last Saturday night together right before I got on an airplane to go visit this friend.
Interestingly enough, I think for me with Eva and Kelly, it's like you have these people that you look up to and the fact that they kind of like let me join them on weekends and spend time. But like Eva threw my graduation from high school party. Kelly and Mark threw my sweet 16.
So it's just it's crazy memories. It's been a very long time. Like what, like 10 years, the talking dog movie.
Scooby-Doo. Um I mean iconic, right? Like what else can you say?
It was Seth. I Sometimes I forget that Seth was in that movie. And not to be mean to Seth.
I just like forget because I don't think of Seth. I forget Seth was on Buffy sometimes because Seth's like the guy that's at my house once a week. I forget sometimes getting into those costumes was so crazy.
We had this costume designer, Lisa Evans. She made every piece from scratch. They were all modeled after um like designer runway pieces.
It was so cool. And I uh I got to work with the Hong Kong wire team from the Matrix on that movie and that was like super cool. And I brought my Buffy stunt doubles to Australia to film.
So we all got to like learn all this cool stuff that we could take back to Buffy that we learned at the Hong Kong Wire team. Also interesting fact, you know, it's very hard to get animals into Australia. Their quarantine rules are very strong and there are no Great Danes in Australia and so we tried to get the Australian government to let us bring a Great Dane over so that we could have like reference and all of that.
Um, and they said no. So, we had to put a poor person in a dog suit for all the reference. We could not get a Great Dane.
There are no Great Danes in Australia. I'm so over this damsel in distress nonsense. Oh, air I breathe.
This is one of those experiences where the movie may not have turned out to be the movie we hoped for, but the people that I got to work with and the experiences I got to have were so legendary. It's hard starting over. It was fun.
First of all, I am 0 degrees from Kevin Bacon and that makes me legendary right there. This picture is at the YouTube concert that Yeah, just name drop. I went to the YouTube concert with Kevin Bacon, which is pretty cool.
Uh he's the coolest guy. He would like just bring his guitar out like in the hotel we were staying in just play music and um people think that this is where I met my like very very dear friend and brother Brendan Frasier. It's not.
It was a project we were looking for a while to work together and this was the project that we got to work together and um I'm lucky enough to have shared any screen time with Brendan Frasier so I'll take any bit of it that I can get. but he is one of my favorite humans on earth and one of our closest friends and I'm so lucky. And then uh Andy Garcia, I mean Andy Garcia, like he's just the coolest and I got to have so many scenes with him and still friends with Andy, still see Kevin um and Forest, my love.
I mean, this guy is just one of the biggest loves of a human being. This is actually at um Star Wars convention I think actually where um this picture was taken. But Forest and I, we had crazy experiences in Mexico.
We were in Mexico for three months, Mexico City doing the movie and we saw so much art and culture and we really took advantage of being there and I love this movie for that. I mean bucket list. The fact that I can call Robin Williams like a dear friend is just I'm so lucky.
Like I'm so lucky to have shared airspace and life. I had just had my second kid. They called him Uncle Robin.
He's the greatest. The absolute greatest. Can you be serious?
Well, maybe for a second. No. See, sorry.
This whole cast was the best. Um Amanda Sutton I talk to all the time. She's a mom of three now.
I love her. Jimmy Wol. Um I met him unmarried, now dad of two kids.
And Hamish had just met Lily when we were filming. they were getting together. I loved sharing any time with Hamish.
She just challenged me as an actor. This was such a dream job. And now I I look at it only with joy and I know that Robin is peace and um I just feel so lucky.
But my favorite story, I probably shouldn't tell this, but it's charming. Um the crew members would be like, "Dude, Robin called me boss. " And I'd be like, "Yeah, Robin can't remember anyone's name, so everybody was boss.
I was boss half the time. There were so many names. Um, so yeah, so Robin calls a lot of people boss, but in such a charming way.
And so now my friends and I from that show, we all call each other boss as a memory for Robin when we see each other. But Dexter, oh my god, the best. Huge fan of Dexter.
Never thought I'd get a chance to play in that sandbox. I'm tiny but mighty and don't you forget it. Then they tell me that it's Christian Slater.
Like I mean my full childhood crush Heathers. I recite to him all the time. Um, just a dream.
I got to present him his star on the Walk of Fame. Like I'm part of his legacy now, which to me is so crazy. Uh, Patrick Dempsey.
I mean, also my other childhood crush, like I remember one of the first days I was sitting in a car between the two of them and I was like, my high school self is literally combusting right now. Um, Dempsey, who is known for taking himself seriously, let me play an epic uh, prank on him and was such a great sport about it. And um, I love you for that.
Dempsey. Do you remember the movie Lover Boy? Hey, it says Dexter anchovies.
Who called it in? You mean who? Some weap.
There was a term in Lover Boy. Uh, that was the code that you wanted to sleep with and whatever. And I I forget why I'm blanking right now.
And I had t-shirts made for the whole crew. And one person even got a tattoo, a real one. And he got on set and he was like working and he wasn't looking.
And then right away he realized we were all wearing this. Oh, Anchovies Please. And we were all wearing the shirt that said anchovies please.
And he about died. I still have that shirt. Again, ready or not.
Another one where I can't believe I got to play in the sandbox. Like this movie came out six years ago. We'll try to kill you.
Welcome to our home. I never thought there would be a sequel and you get this phone call that they're doing one and they want you to be in it and to get to work with this cast like I admire every one of them coming into it, but then getting to know them and like they're my friends. Like it's crazy.
Um Sean Hy is my twin. We had the best time creating these characters. Katherine and Sam like know I'm obsessed with them.
Nester is I've worked with him before and like to get to work with him again. And then there's this um small guy you may have heard of, David Croninberg plays my father. That was intimidating and he was the coolest.
And we took the first one and just like got to go to town on it. And I'm so excited for everyone to see it because I think fans of the original will be like, "Yep, they honored it. They did it.
" And then if you haven't, go back and watch the first one because like what are you waiting for? You're missing out. It is a great film.
So very excited about that. And then My Life is over apparently. Apparently this is the end of the road for Sarah.
So, it's been nice and uh hopefully there's more pages to fill and I look forward to getting the chance to fill them.
