[Music] we are in the third module already so well done making it this far this video will be about how creators and journalists can fight misinformation disinformation and Mal information do we know what all of these terms mean misinformation disinformation and Mal information are terms that came with the rise of digital media especially in the context of social media platforms where we know information can spread rapidly and unchecked uh people are using these terms in big events like elections Public Health crisis and political movements where spreading Falls or misleading information online can have some actual
real life consequences misinformation means that something has been shared or posted by mistake not knowing that the shared content isn't correct a good example of this is when the internet went crazy over the pulp wearing a puffy white jacket this picture is totally fake if you already didn't know by sharing this picture unknowingly people were spreading misinformation but the maker of that picture has spread disinformation uh because if you create false content or information and share it in intentionally that is disinformation um so what's small information then something that is based on reality but it's
used to harm someone or something it would be Mal information if for example a nude picture of the Pope was spread online to discredit him artificial intelligence or AI makes it even easier to create dis and Mal information than ever before and it's super hard to recognize a generated images if you're not used to it journalistic media has been very careful about how they use AI in their visual content clearly label labeling it it as such to make sure there's no room for misunderstandings as we see in the Pope's puffy jacket case this information can
spread very fast and the end result can be that many people still think that PO just has a lot of Swag unfortunately studies show that this information often spreads faster on social media than the real or deunk information while the example of the Pope might seem really funny or harmless disinformation when spread systematically can affect important Democratic processes in a country like what happened in Slovakia just two days before Slovakia's elections in 2023 a fake audio recording was posted on social media that portrayed Liberal Party leader mikal Simka talking to a journalist about how to
rig elections by buying votes this fake audio recording could not be deunk widely because meta's man manipulated media policy applied only to videos not audios and it was posted during the pre-election quiet period such cases where information Integrity is compromised could influence overall election outcomes experts say that this case is just the beginning and we can certainly expect more similar instances to arise in the future even even though meta the company that owns Facebook and Instagram says they had hired more fact Checkers for the Slovak elections it clearly wasn't enough we know that creators have
enormous power over their audiences during these kinds of situations creators can definitely take part in helping spread reliable information many creators have a special Kno how they often are Professionals in certain subject areas that allow them to Deep Miss and disinformation I've seen creators who are also doctors they talk about misconceptions of mental health issues or neurodiversity for example in Finland we have a Creator who is a psycho therapist in the parliament right now after he made mental health awareness content on socials first some creators have specialized in debunking sex myths others deunk conspiracy theories
like appy Richards she's a miss and disinformation researcher and does content debunking and explaining common misinformation like conspiracy theories as you can see from the previous examples all kinds of content creators can take part in spreading reliable information and find their own unique way to do it if you are a Creator the first thing to remember is that if a story sounds too good to be true it probably is we need to be critical make sure you know where your information comes from is it clear who made the content and why is it even made
in the first place can you distinguish what is opinion or advertised content how is the information sourced is it somehow visible could I give feedback or interact with who has made the content of course it's not always easy to figure this out usually it's much easier to create misinformation then debunk it the most important thing is to evaluate and think before shiring there are easy ways to take a couple of online tools into use such as Wayback machine where you will find arpe web pages and you'll be able to find out what someone might be
