Stranger Things season 1 episode 7 & 8 | Answer's first time watching

Somebody call a doctor because bad medicine is back. That's the answer. This is the Apple. Oh god, Mason Quinn. Folks, today we're getting back to season one of Stranger Things. This is episode 7. Man, so much stuff happened in the last episode for me. The fact that we got the reveal that Eleven was the one that found the demigorgon, opened everything up. And again, if you're just joining in here, I have seen Stranger Things before. Did a one-time watch binge all the way through. So, getting caught up here for the answer. This is a lot

of fun. Ton of stuff uh with Easter eggs and foreshadowing things I don't remember. So, it's a lot of fun. Yeah, for me, first time watch. Can't wait to get back into it, especially now with them. I guess they're coming to get them. They're coming in the house. Who knows what's going to happen? Definitely ready, Willing, able to find out. Yeah, I binged this shortly after it came out back in 2016, just like Mason Gwyn ran through all the episodes. Cultural phenomenon, so I get the the big picture of this, but there's so many details

that are coming across as very, very new to me, things I didn't remember. So, it's been an exciting rewatch for me as of yet, and can't wait to see what happens. No. Um really my m it was awesome once uh seeing uh Lucas come to His senses and really and then apologizing and it was great and he he even said you know uh >> what was a oh yeah and they they you know buried the hatchet so to speak but uh him just apologizing and telling him that you know we're they're friends everything I said about being a traitor and stuff like he was wrong like that was huge cuz you know the whole

time we're like come on Lucas you know come around to our side come around I You had Dustin like in the middle. You had Mike, you know, really caring for Eleven and thinking, you know, we have to protect her and help her out. >> And then Dustin was being the mediator it seemed like between the two and trying to get them to bond. And he finally and finally in this episode they did. I mean, it took Lucas seeing that bad men were coming and had to yell at like everyone in the Hawkins man. What I

still love is this Hawkins like energy. They're going to come and like fix stuff at your house and they're all getting out in suits and ties like all right, all right, that makes sense. But at least they showed a badge though at the beginning to uh get into Mike's parents' house. But uh that was that was really good to see that and telling her that she's awesome because she is. And flipping the van was amazing. And it seemed like yeah, she had the blood, but it seemed like it wasn't that much Blood. Not like when

she did some other stuff where we saw coming out of her ear and even more out of her nose. So, like I'm wondering if maybe somehow she can hone in on that power and then it does less and less damage to her. I don't know. She was early prediction. Maybe she's able to figure something out so that way she has more uses out of it. >> The the first time I watched it, I thought the ET scene was coming with the bikes. I thought 11 was going to and They were going to do the ET

thing, but like a little too much on the hill. >> That van runs into the other vans, but no, they had to have the shot with Modí coming out and like looking like, "Oh, they're getting away." Will he puts his Rick Flair hair back. Uh but then uh then also uh a really touching moment between Joyce and Eleven because you know all the experiments it seemed like Modin would say like a come on you got this but like it was all cold and zero Heart whereas Joyce is saying it with love and affection and telling

her you know you get in there save my boy I'll be right here for you. And you saw it right after she woke up in the in the pool like she's clutching onto Joyce's arm and Joyce is hugging her just back. Now when she was kicking and screaming in the tank at the lab, nobody was there hugging her. Nobody was there. They're just like, "All right, we'll get it next time." All right, back to my notes about What all happened there. You know, that's it's it was so cold. >> It's the difference between treating somebody

like a child and treating them like a lab rat. >> Yeah. Or a weapon >> is basically what it is. So that that was very comforting to seeing, you know, that Eleven obviously greatly appreciated that. And then uh so then going back to uh when they got to the to uh the almost kissing moment between Eleven and Mike. Oh, it almost almost got a little uh romantic. Maybe they're both in Lurve. So that's why I then loved when Nancy and Mike had the had the chat where uh uh no more secrets. All right. So Okay.

So like Jonathan now e no she no she was like no no like that whereas then when uh she asked Mike he's like ew gross. So it was just funny to me that they said no more secrets and then right away went into secrets >> immediately >> immediately and you know who knows what it is really with uh with with Nancy and Jonathan but you know cuz now Steve it looks like he might be coming around. So, I don't know if he's gonna become an ally or how he's going to fit into this moving forward

because it looks like, you know, he could have stopped it. He never told him to put the thing down, uh, the spray paint down, and he still let him write that about Nancy and then he had his ass Whooped. And maybe, maybe that was a whooping he needed to come to his sense. Little wake up call. >> Maybe that's what it was, too. So, I'm hoping to see his character grow and see where he comes from there. and then getting uh caught by the security at the end of the episode with uh Joyce and uh

our good pal Hopper David Harper Harper Harbor. Uh I'm I'm interested to see how they get themselves out of that because uh every other situation he seemed to Just punch his way out of it. Yeah, I don't think he's going to be able to punch her punch his way out of it, too. That's why I love they did it outside the bus as well in the junkyard was sm basically doing the cartoon don't bump him on the head >> on the top of the head and just guy number two saying what the and getting his

ass whooped. So >> another really really good episode. I cannot wait to see what the season one Finale holds cuz we we have a we have a few things that we need to you know wrap up. We saw Will for the first time and we saw the the monster the thing or whatever you want to call it coming in. So, where are we what is Will going to do to get out of that situation and hopefully survive to hopefully get have 11 and then maybe pull him out this next episode? Yeah, for me the great

thing is like I said, you know, as a rewatch, you know, some of the key things that happen And you know the arc of some characters already, but you don't know when it happens. And so many things happened just in this episode, let alone this whole first season, that I didn't recall them happening uh this early on. Like I said, the the romantic moment between Mike and Eleven, for some reason, I didn't think that that came until much later in the series. I I didn't know it came in one by seven. So, that was pretty

wild. Um, it was good to see Steve start to kind of turn the corner a little bit and maybe realize the people that he's hanging out with aren't that great because, you know, deep down I think he knows the kind of person Nancy is. And like something's just not jing with what they're saying versus what he knows about Nancy. So, it was good to see him kind of make the turn there, tell those guys off and and head out. Uh, not sure where he's going and what he's up to. Genuinely don't remember That. But, uh,

of course, the epic van flip. Uh, I that's one of probably the most iconic scenes that this series has had. So, like I said, I knew that was coming, but the first time I watched it, I'm like, "Oh, damn. Are they going to do the ET thing? You know, kids on bikes, the the government forces are coming for him, but might have been a little bit on the nose." And the thing about this episode is you finally get everybody together and they're finally Able to share the information because through so much of the season, everybody

knew a little bit. And it's like if they could just put it together, then our team would have that much more info and be that much closer to reaching Will. And again with Will, I love how they do the upside down. It's It's so cool how everything is just black. You get the reflection off Eleven when she's in there. But we know that in the upside down it does mirror the real world like We saw with the forest when Nancy was in there. But it's curious to me that where Will is there's nothing except Castle

Buyers, you know, his fort. So I don't recall if that's something that Will had a hand with in creating like a place where he can be somewhat safe from the monster. I mean obviously he doesn't look like he's going to last long. >> I think it's still somewhat similar to the force. It's just when she goes in, she only she sees nothing. But what She's trying to look for now that could be >> because remember when she does when she does do the tank in the lab, she's always looking for just one person. >> Yeah.

Like the agent or whatever >> and then found and also then found the monster the the last time. So Yep. >> So I I think that's part of it as well. >> Yeah, that could be a part. And again, that's the fun of doing >> because we saw Barbara in the pool in The upside down. >> Yep. And that's part of the the fun of doing a rewatch, right? is like you kind of remember what happens by the time you're on, you know, season 3, four, you remember some of the bigger stuff, but these earlier

seasons are such a fun rewatch. And uh yeah, just man, the the boys running around it just trying to get away from the government uh entities. Just such a nostalgic vibe of of so many shows from the 80s and they Did just such a great job representing that. >> I thought you were going to bring up Mike's dad believing in the government, being like, "They're the government. They're on our side. >> They're on our side. hilarious from the government. >> He's such a >> We're from the government. >> I'm here to help. >> We're here

to help. We're >> That was that was great. >> Um you know, obviously Barb, you know, not being alive anymore. >> Um that was uh that was one thing, you know, a big part of that. I remember >> again there was a lot of there was a lot of like >> See, I didn't remember that we got confirmation that Barb was gone. Gone. I I like I I knew they alluded to it, but I couldn't remember what the confirmation was. >> I Yeah, I I thought the confirmation was earlier. Like I thought we found out

right away that Barb was gone. >> Well, when you watch that scene and what hap and it goes like that on her even upset, >> you kind of figure, but I was just I mean, you're holding hope. You know, this is such it's such a re a weird rewatch because again, we binged it and it was nine years ago and you you might Think like, oh, you got to remember what happened like 9 years ago. Not just is it 9 years ago, but it's like binged it all in one weekend, you know? And of course,

when you're at home binging on Netflix, you know how it is. Half the time you're like, "Oh, not me. I pay attention." >> Not this guy, >> right? Yeah. >> He's got no friends. >> I There's the old the old I need a good Netflix show to watch while I scroll through my phone, you know. But in any regard, so again, I knew I knew that Barb passed obviously with the being Answers first time watch. We're not going to we're not going to throw any spoilers out there, but so many of the other details I

forget. I forgot like once they were like in the in the school and start like, "Okay, yep. I remember that they went in the pool in the school to to help look for uh look for Will." Um I couldn't have told you where he was hiding at. >> Um so that was cool that they showed the castle buyers. the ending even the ending like where it shows like the monster like okay now it kind of found him I'm like no clue I remember so there's there's so much that I don't remember um I it's the

old you know the Mandela effect I remembered Steve beating the [ __ ] out of Jonathan you know like that's what I remembered I forgot it was the other way around and then I you know I didn't know what Steve's arc was in season one you know obviously I know some things from the the season's coming up, won't say anything. But like as far as his arc in the first season, I'm like, "Oh, well, look, he's helping out." So, they're trying to make Steve like be the nice guy, but at the same time, you know,

something going on Between Nancy and Jon Nancy and Jonathan. I honestly, guys, I don't remember a lot that happened, which is what makes this rewatch so fun because when we talked about doing it, you know, everybody on on Patreon and stuff said, "Yeah, let have the answer go through a full time a first- time watch." I'll be like, "Okay, well, I've seen it already, but we'll come through and watch it." And so much of it feels new. It's It's really exciting, but it's Like you know what's happening. So, but at the same time as a

handful of their originals that had done okay I think Orange is the New Black was one of their first like really really big ones but this one as you've alluded to is what really okay Netflix was doing a handful of originals. People were like, "Oh, Netflix is doing some some cool stuff." And then this came out and it was like, >> "Wow, like Netflix just dropped a banger." >> And now going back and watching it, you're like, "Okay, this makes sense. Why um why it's so popular and not that I didn't remember why it was

popular, but going through and and doing a rewatch, it's like, okay, this is uh this is pretty awesome." So answer is just scrolling through. So Stranger Things season 4 is actually their third most Watched show. Um Stranger Things season 3 was their 10th most watched show. So it looks like the first season got bumped out of the top 10 by subsequent subsequent seasons. Um, but in any regard, um, it's this has been so much fun, you know, and I, you know, to go back and review, you know, all the details and stuff is, you know,

you guys covered it pretty well, but I'm just so this has been such a fun watch and now, you know, I was looking forward to Watching this when, you know, when we had decided that we were going to do this in a rewatch for Answer, but now I'm just that much more excited for seasons two and three. Even season 4, Diamond Dave and I did that when it came out, I want to say in 2022. So, it's been 3 years ago. And there's a lot from season 4 that I remember >> pretty clearly. Um, >>

It's Like, oh, the nostalgia. And when you think nostalgia, you're like, think like grade school or high school. Well, it was 9 years ago.

2016 isn't nostalgia, but it's this weird thing because it is set in the 80s. So, it does give you some nostalgia there as well. I don't know. This has been such a fun watch. So coming into this expect expectations were high not just for the season but for this episode because I was like how are they all going to you Know complete everything at hand and you know are

they saving Will or are they setting it up for more seasons which I think in the end they did obviously set up for more seasons with uh L possibly still being there and then obviously Will throwing up the slug and the bathroom which is gross. See, that's one of those things because I was thinking about this as they were wrapping up the finale just real quick here is that I wonder if Netflix knew, look, they had To know pretty early. They had a hit on their hands. >> Well, the thing is they do a test

group real quick or you leave it like an open ender contract and they probably saw how much it crushed in the first week we had >> because they could have done that cuz up until that end scene where Will spits out the slug that could have been the end of the series. I wonder if they had um I wonder if they had been um season 2 had been green lit. much do we have the actors And actresses signed on for? Because, uh, we got to we got to extend those contracts a little bit. >> Yeah, I'd be curious to see how much the pay increases were from the first. I would assume they went up because like each each one of those actors have that probably, you know, had things then uh like fall into their lap as far as other roles. But yeah, back to this like I didn't even write any notes down just because this episode like it had me, you Know, right from the

beginning. You know, you had uh interrogation, you have uh Harbor Hopper just making a a deal, so to speak. You have Steve coming in clutch. I mean, I did not like I was hoping for somewhat of a redemption after last episode where he, you know, he was like he got in a fight with his so-called best friend and his girlfriend and he actually made this. So, I'm just the way that he took on the monster. I'm like, how did you let Jonathan beat you? Well, I suppose he didn't have a bat, but the way he

was handling that bat with that all that spin and then powder that was so that was nice seeing a nice redemption arc for him. And uh so I was like when they did the the wrap-up I was wondering how much they would show as far as like were other kids saying whatever did like did we see an onscreen of like Stephen and him saying hey you know I'm sorry I was a dick back there type stuff. But we saw in the end that Both he and Nancy had to have worked together to pay for a

new camera because he was the one that broke it. So, you know, obviously he knows how much that meant to him and how much of a dick move that was and like even though he came in and when he first saw the monster, crazy crazy, this is this is [ __ ] crazy. I'm out of here. And he came back in a major way. So, that was nice to see that. And then, uh the boys how resilient they were, >> you know, in the school like trying to find ways to get around everywhere. They're getting

all the pudding. The explaining the pudding versus putting to to Ele was, you know, it was great that whole scene. between Millie and Finn was great because who hasn't been there as a kid at some point where they're like, "Well, I like you. >> Would I be your sister?" >> No, no, no, no. You'd be sister with my I mean, sis, he could have been like, "You could be your sister-in-law." I mean, that's where it could end up going. But it it was just it was adorable cuz also even with adults, sometimes it's hard for

them to get out like I like you. That's why cuz sometimes you will still be the doofus, you know? Sometimes you're you're a child at heart and you still do the weird stupid like you know you know hitting >> just going around pulling pigtails >> just like girls that he likes. >> So so no it just it it brings you back to when you're a kid and sweet and innocent and like you finally he finally told her and then instead of just telling her he also kissed her which then their both reactions from that were

amazing just because obviously to to to Ele does does she quite understand what that is? does she because she's had Papa who has been like whatever and she finally realized ah that we knew all Along that he was bad and uh her flexing her powers in the hallway to take care of those guys and too bad she wasn't at full strength so that way she could have just easily I think she would have easily taken out the monster but I don't think she's gone obviously you know uh why would you want to get rid of

you know 11 she's the the the best car other than her and Hopper are the two best characters in the show. And that's and that and I and I don't want to take that Away from anybody else. All the characters, like I said, I don't know if it'll make the cut. The casting director and whoever approved of these hires for these actors, they knocked it out of the park because everyone was amazing in this season. They played their parts perfectly. >> I mean, you know, Jonathan going from like I like being, you know, away shy

from things. I only like talking to people I like to being like almost a Hero here and willing to do anything and everything for his brother. We we saw all the heart-to-he heart moments between them two and why it was hitting him so hard. You saw him when a rider crush it as like a mom that had lost everything but thought she he was still there. Even even the kids like these are I'm pretty sure these are most of their first roles. They crush it. Knocked it out of the park. What a great first season.

I can't wait for season two. Definitely ready, willing, able for that because this this season knocked it apart. I mean, the people spoke and they said how great this was. I I they're right. They're right. This show was phenomenal, and I I love the first season so far. Cannot wait to dive into the next. >> Yeah, this first season was awesome. Uh, this episode in particular, I folks, I I don't know how else to explain it other than you kind of talked about it's like Remembering the alphabet being A to Z. I guess for me

the best way I could describe because I did binge the the whole series, not just, you know, episode by episode when it came out. I think I binged it right around the time you and Diamond and Dave were doing season 4. I think maybe just before that. >> Well, you didn't you didn't you didn't binge all this right when it came out? >> No, not when it came out. So, I did Everything all at once. And that's why I'm always saying how the seasons kind of run together. So, the best way I can describe it,

it's like remembering the show as like a photo album is almost the best way I can describe it. Like I remember pictures and certain scenes, but you know, this whole episode felt brand new. Uh I I didn't remember 11 taking out the demigorgan like that. I didn't remember the slingshot. Obviously, it it got me again. But yeah, It was because it's been so long and because, you know, we do so much content here on the channel. Uh, it this again remembering as a photo album is the best way I can describe it. And and this

was just great. I loved the flashbacks with Hopper and with him trying to save his his daughter. >> Oh, that was rough. >> I don't know if you remember that, but I didn't remember that at all. And that was done so well the way they tied that In. And it really made you feel for what Hopper was going through because David Harour did a really good job this season of kind of showing himself as, you know, a man who's kind of lost everything, doesn't quite know where he is, uh, as far as, you know, where

he's going in life. And this really gave him purpose. And he he he was able to fight for Will the way that he you called it answer. He was able to fight for Will the way that he couldn't really fight for his Daughter where, you know, he was in the back of the room and he was helpless. He couldn't do anything. And in this case, he could. And and those flashbacks with Hopper was was really powerful. I I really liked those. And again, like I said, this this could have been the the end of the

series. Now, obviously, it wasn't because they renewed it right away. But I liked how they were tying things up and then just until the very end, obviously, you saw Will have that connection to the upside down, which was cool. Now, again, I don't remember what Will's connection is. I wouldn't spoil it for answer if I did, but uh going into season two is going to be wild. And man, they just they just did everything so so right this series this uh season rather. And like in this episode, of course, the fight ended at the school.

I mean, why wouldn't it why wouldn't it end on the boys home turf? And and I love them Running around and and trying to hide from everybody. of course 11 coming up clutch taking out boy I mean for a villain that didn't have a whole lot to say and I don't I can't even think of what her name is but the the blonde woman who took Benny >> uh among probably others uh what a satisfying way for her to go out and I wouldn't put her up there with Dolores Umbbridge by any means but definitely

that actress did a fantastic job of Being a really good villain and of course Matthew Modí was interesting, too, in that we knew he was a villain, but boy, he was trying his best to be awfully convincing as being somebody who was caring. And, you know, Eleven Ele 11 Ele 11 Ele 11 Ele 11 Ele 11 Ele 11 Ele 11 Ele 11 Ele 11 Ele 11 Eleven called him out. So, I I loved the connection that she grew to have with the boys and of course with Mike and and just that bond of friendship. It

was so cool to See Lucas come back and and kind of get the big uh what I thought was the big save with the slingshot with a minor assist from I thought it was the classic got it and lodged in the throat, especially the way they set it up. >> I was trying to think if they grabbed something in the backpack, something ridiculous that might help somehow. I don't know what that would be, but I was just waiting for them to Have something in the slingshot that maybe slowed it down. But yeah, at the end

of the day it was it was 11 coming through clutch and a fantastic season. I love the brilliance and just the idea of of the upside down itself, you know, this dimension that's, you know, flipped and it's it's our world but just in a different uh condition. >> So it was Agent Connie Connie Frasier and it was and it was Katherine Dyer that played it. You know, she had it Coming so we were happy to see that. >> Yeah, absolutely. I just I just wanted to make sure we got her out there with that. >>

Yeah. But no, I I thought everything tied up great. I thought they handled all the friendships and all the relationships. The one with Nancy could have been real tricky. They could have gone the usual love triangle route there. I'm glad they didn't. I'm glad that, you know, her and Jonathan just Kind of had it where they worked together. Yeah, they might have had a somewhat romantic moment, a time or two there, but I think in the end, uh, things kind of worked out maybe the way they were supposed to. Uh, we'll see. But yeah, just

a banger of a show. So glad I got to go back and watch this again because we were actually uh just mentioned it in pass. I'm like yeah before Stranger Things season 5 comes out I'm going to have to rebinge the Whole season and get caught up and Dave's like whoa whoa hold on the folks have spoken. They want to see the answer. Uh they want to see the answer watch it. So this was just the best. >> Yeah I mean this for me this was so much fun. I mean there the the beginning of

the um the this episode I I didn't quite remember how things played out. I forgot that Hopper gave up 11, which is weird. But that was I mean there was a lot that I did remember from this episode. I remember them being in the school and the demigorgan coming through and chasing people through. I I knew he had a some sort of hero arc. I just wasn't sure how it it played out and him coming In with a bat and stuff like that was great. >> Was pretty awesome. So, if you I did have a Steve shirt from Stranger Things with him with a bat over a shoulder. >> I used to have that shirt. But in any regard, so this this episode, I would say I I did remember quite a bit Of it. I didn't remember exactly how it ended. Of course, I I knew that you knew that Will gets out, right? Um, so that I knew I knew that he's in the hospital. Yeah, I forgot about the scene where they, you know, the uh the long thing gets pulled out of his uh his his mouth. >> Um, I did remember like the bathroom where he's, you know, kind of coughing up the slug and stuff like that. So, I

didn't remember at all that El just disappeared like that, taking out the The demigorgan. >> Yeah, same. So there again, there's a lot where um I'm watching it and being like, "Oh, yep, yep." And then some I'm like, "Ah, I don't I don't remember this at all." So it's um look, it was a really fun watch. It just again reminds you um just why this series was so popular. It was a compelling story. As an answer said, the casting like all the characters were great. Um and for a lot of these younger actors, uh I

think it Was their first like big role. And then for Bobby Millie Brown, I thought she had some commercial work before this, but I think this was her first big role. But talk about a life-changing event for all these kids. I mean, they go from relatively unknowns to all of a sudden like >> global superstars on the highest level. >> And it's almost along this the lines of like the Harry Potter thing with, you know, that whole crew. >> Oh yeah. are you looking at Millie Bobby Brown? >> Yeah. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and Intruders, NCIS, Modern Family, like but they're but they're all like one episodes. role, >> um, this was it for her and and everybody else. And, um, I think it's cool that she's married to Bon Joy's kid, John Bon Joy's kid, married to Jake Bonio. Uh, so that's pretty cool. Um, but yeah, this um this was a really fun Rewatch. I'm uh I'm super excited. Everybody wanted us to do it. Um, again, you know, reaction channels for, you know, it's kind of that's the hook. Hey, it's our first time watching and there's a lot of shows that, you know, whatever combination of the four of us have seen and

you know when it's just one person who hasn't seen it, you know, are people going to want us to go back and watch it? But everybody said, "Yep, yep, go back and have the answer. Watch it." And I think you're more likely to remember uh you know the like a 2-hour movie that's two episodes of this, you know, or a 90minute movie. It's like, okay, I remember, you know, pretty much how things play out.
